Hand-crafted wine lights 16

Performing Artists Magazine January 2014

Instead of throwing away their empty wine bottle Patti White and Debbie Bocklage get creative. The two ladies design hand crafted stained glass wine bottle lights.

How did you two meet and how long have you been friends? We met when Debbie was Patti’s daughter’s 4th grade teacher 7-1/2 years ago. We both worked at the same school at the time and we often bribed children with chocolates (BTW....that REALLY works wonders, and if you have a little extra, it keeps the teachers happy too!). After a few months, we realized we had a LOT in common (besides chocolate and wine). We both grew up in the St. Louis, Missouri area, we found out we lived in the same neighborhood and we both have a “sick” sense of humor. We just really connected and became fast good friends! Over the 7 -1/2 years we still enjoy running a small business, shopping, having a glass of wine, and laughing together.

How did you two come up with the idea for GET LIT? Several years ago, while living in St. Louis, Debbie saw and bought a bottle light, (as she likes anything that sparkles, glitters, and lights up!). She showed the bottle light to Patti and said, “Hey isn’t this really cool? Don’t you think we could do this?” That’s all it took!! Patti (the mad scientist wanting to find a use for all the “empties” in her trash), began testing paints on bottles and trying to find methods to drill a bottle without breaking the bottle. After a series of accidents and effectively learning how to pick glass shards out of her “chief driller’s” hair, the process was perfected! And here we are, continuing to try to improve our product and having a great time doing what we love to do.

In the beginning, what was the hardest obstacle to overcome (in terms of being an artist with a company, versus a hobby)? Learning that you can’t please everyone and learning how to balance the demands of our little “hobby” with our other full time jobs! Questions such as: How do we price our products? Where should we market them? What venues give us the greatest return on investment? What competition is out there? All of these questions were spinning in our heads. Over the years, we have learned that we just can’t please everyone! The first year was our most difficult because we accepted custom orders after Thanksgiving and literally set our holiday season off on a stressed note! Each of our hand painted creations takes about 2 weeks to complete. When you want to be “everything to everyone” you have to make sacrifices...and we sacrificed ourselves the first year. Our advice would be to stay true to yourself and set bounds. The moment that your “hobby” gets more in control of you then you of it...it is time to back off and have a little serenity (or glass of wine).

How do you handle running a company and having a life outside of work? We both absolutely enjoy running our little business but it can certainly be a challenge to juggle our busy lives. Our advice: Set attainable goals and limits! Set inventory goals, personal goals, and business goals. THEN... set time limits, deadline limits, and set aside time for yourself. Fortunately, we are blessed with very supportive families and friends and of course we are good at talking each other “off the ledge” when necessary!(hubby) was thrilled.

Do you have any marketing advice for new artists?

when someone wants you to paint a unicorn eating a rainbow and pooping butterflies....you have to set LIMITS! True story! :-)

GET SOCIAL! Don’t be modest (that part is hard) and surround yourself with people who know you and are proud of you! You often learn so much about your “work” from those that love you. Get out of your comfort zone. Pursue any lead that your are given. Try out any venue (that you can afford) and put yourself out there. Think about your next step and how you want to get there! Then JUMP! Yes, Jump off that ledge and let it take root! Oftentimes, the hardest step is the first one.

The company is based in Duluth, Georgia…can someone from the UK or Canada place an order? Absolutely! Of course we do have shipping charges unless they want to fly us up to deliver them in person! They havegood wine up there too....right?

Does GET LIT have special promotions throughout the year?

Search engine advice or Networking tips? We started out with baby steps only marketing directly through word of mouth. After that we moved onto Facebook which we have found to be a fantastic inexpensive marketing tool! With experience and a growing portfolio of ideas and product offerings, we were able to build and develop our OWN website www.getlitbottlelights.com and a blog. We remain small and simple in our marketing. We have been encouraged to sell our “wares” on Etsy and other online craft venues. Herein lies the “set limits and goals”. The size of our company is manageable at this point and we recently decided to pursue our business license. We NEVER want to disappoint ourselves, our customers or our families.

No. Not really. Thankfully we have been fairly consistent on our business throughout the year and have not had to offer them. PLUS...our “suppliers”work all year round for US! Gotta love them!

Does GET LIT offer gift cards? Not yet....GREAT IDEA!

“Word of Mouth” marketing has taken us to retail vendors in Philly, and all across the country with specialty orders. You would be surprised how much talking goes on!

Does GET LIT accept custom orders? Yes, we do accept custom orders. Oftentimes our greatest product offerings come from special requests! SO...We always welcome them! EXCEPT

Performing Artists Magazine January 2014

How can people purchase a hand crafted bottle? We have a website for people to view some of our work and get some ideas of bottle light possibilities. The website does NOT accept orders directly, because we love to speak with our customers and customize their creation. Therefore, all of our order/ideas come to us via email or phone.

Does GET LIT make bottle lights for kids or teens? Fat kids, skinny kids, kids that climb on rocks. Tough kids, Sissy kids, even kids with chicken pox! YES! We make bottle lights for people of all ages, shapes, and sizes.

Five years from now, where do you see GET LIT (in terms of business growth)?

On a beach. Reading a magazine with our faces on the cover....hey wait....that is happening now! With a glass of wine. Watching the sunset over our villa thinking of our next endeavor (or glass of wine). Ok.... back to reality. We are sooooo excited about our future. Every year we have tried to keep our business fresh by offering new products. Where will our business be around the country? What new ideas will we be offering? That, is the exciting part! We can’t wait to be part of the journey!

but of course, we are ALL a little crazy sometimes, so that makes our jobs FUN!!!

How can people receive updates about what’s going on with GET LIT? We have a website at www. getlitbottlelights.com, we have a blog, AND please friend us on Facebook! We always love to have new friends!

What inspires you? SERIOUSLY....EVERYTHING! We are inspired by a glass of wine, family, friends, a glass of wine, zany customers, coloring books, a glass of wine, backpacks, animals, a glass of wine...you name it! Oh and did we mention a glass of wine! We have had some really crazy requests,
