blast from the past

We’re strolling down memory lane in honor of our 10th birthday this year. Here’s a look back at one of our early issues. issue #11: June 2013

Our bright blooms + peppy flowerpot game has long been strong—it’s a great way to refresh a patio table or your kitchen countertops.

forever-stylish kitchens

get out the measuring tape

The ones we’ve featured have served up a mix of timeless inspo and trendy ideas (the pendants with wine corks in this Portland, OR, space wowed us in 2013). Check out the lookalike apron-front sink in this month’s kitchen redo on page 105.

Over the years, we’ve shared endless fab finds, along with key tips for setting them up at home. Hang framed art about 5 feet above the floor. Keep a nightstand 2 inches away from the bed. It’s good when area rugs extend to a foot or so from the wall. Math…but make it fun!

just a little crafts obsessed

Whenever we’ve discovered a stellar product, we’ve filled you in—and stashed it in our walk-in crafts closet, a.k.a. our happy place. Some all-time faves: FolkArt crafts paint (ultra-creamy), E6000 glue (bonds almost any material), and conductive copper foil tape used by electricians (we wrapped it around marble coasters).

house

Amherst Gray by Benjamin Moore

Sealskin by Sherwin-Williams

BUFF STRICKLAND

front door Citronella by Sherwin-Williams

Why this mix: “A one-two punch of gray was just the update our brick and shingles needed,” says Kara Samples of West University Place, TX. “And we wanted our door color to be totally different.” What’s so whoa: Still a trendy house color, gray is especially fresh next to chartreuse—a truly fun surprise on a front door. Dockside Blue by Sherwin-Williams

porch ceiling

Iceberg by Benjamin Moore

front door Indigo Batik by Sherwin-Williams

Why this mix: “I had the house built near me for my dad,” says Betsy Snow of Shreveport, LA. “Its ocean blues reflect his love of sailing.” What’s so whoa: As much as the contrast between the door and shutters stands out, the real eye candy here is that sweet light blue ceiling.

Picture Gallery Red by Farrow & Ball

Why this mix: “It’s a nod to traditional Colonial yellow and red,” says Ann Viviano of Minneapolis, MN, “though we are tradition-with-a-twist people, so we chose light olive green and earthy red.” What’s so whoa: The house color may be muted, but the shutters and door add impact. The whole effect is offbeat enough to feel special. 24 HGTV Magazine

Why this mix: “My grandmother was an artist and pink was her trademark color,” says Julie Lynch, who lives in a Chicago suburb. “I’ve always been drawn to it.” What’s so whoa: Rich fuchsia and pristine white set a luxe scene—think boutique hotel. Plus the bold door highlights those elegant columns.

Why this mix: “Blue and white is a classic and approachable pair,” says Christine Bartley of St. Paul, MN. “That goes with the feel of our Cape Cod.” What’s so whoa: A monochrome exterior is eye-catching when there are varying shades— it creates dimension.

The Dreamer Palette

Palette Play Home editor Lora Yoon Huh gives her WFH space a colorful refresh.

WALL + BULLETIN BOARD

Lora took the “What’s Your Color ID?” quiz. (She’s a Dreamer.) To give her room a relaxed-chic mood, she chose Coral Clay for the walls and Secret Cove for the desk.

Inspired by each other, the wall color and the peachy-pink fabric-covered bulletin board pair well together.

ACCESSORIES White ones add simple pops, while a woven basket (waste bin upgrade!) adds warm texture.

DESK + CHAIR Painted a rich blue, the desk zens out a workday. “And I always love a Chippendale chair,” says Lora. “It’s a classic that also feels modern.”

make it cool

This DIY caught our eye on Instagram, so we had to get the details. Fiber rush cord wrapped around the wire frame looks way fresher than the old fabric shade. Another DIY project, the print was created in Photoshop.

Posh but budget-friendly: That’s removable molding stuck on with Command strips. From worn wood top to faux marble— paint magic!

Around 60 pieces of 1 1/8-inch half-round trim cover the table base.

THE DIYER: Dalia of @diydalia_ “A pricey table was my inspo for redoing a secondhand find. I prepped the wood top with a deglosser, then painted it white—Night Blooming Jasmine by Behr. For a marbled effect, I applied different shades of gray acrylic paint in veiny patterns with a small round brush and buffed them with an edging brush. Once it dried, I sealed it with epoxy resin and attached strips of wood trim around the base with Instantbond. It’s the boho table of my dreams!” HGTV Magazine 41

No mudroom, no problem! These Instagrammers’ clever ideas work for any setup.

Laney Johnson @pine.and.birch

OLD-SCHOOL AWESOME

Tired of the pileup of shoes in her entry, Laney found a storage hero in a secondhand 18-cubby locker. “My husband and I planned to split them, but my shoes have taken over,” says Laney, who lives in Ashland, KY. “Looking for a pair is like a game— they’re always in the last one I open!” Vintage folding chairs and a DIYed shelf with black metal hooks from Cascade Iron Co. round out the look.

Rehma Khan @thehadylife

MODERN MINIMALIST

Since this spot is visible from multiple rooms in Rehma’s townhouse in Columbia, MD, “I wanted a storage solution for our family that could stand on its own as a design element,” she says. Her idea: Nail three MDF boards painted white to the wall vertically, and top them with eight horizontal boards painted black. Spaced-out wood hooks from Amazon keep it neat even when there are a bunch of jackets and bags, and she rotates accessories seasonally—“pretty and practical,” says Rehma.

Teri Moore @tmoorehome

CLASSIC CHARM

“It was hard moving from a home with a coat closet by the door to just this, but we fit all the essentials,” says Teri. To match the style of her 1920s bungalow in Nashville, TN, she hung a hip poster from Hatch Show Print and mounted metal hooks from Amazon to a piece of scrap wood that she painted and distressed with her kindergartner. The buffalo check stool from Target isn’t just for looks, says Teri: “My daughter sits here and practices tying her shoes.”

Ashley Elliot @ashley_elliot_

TOTAL GARAGE FANTASY “With two young kids and a dog, we were in major need of everyday storage,” says Ashley, who’s from Wethersfield, CT. She added legs to a cube organizer that had stood vertically in a closet, attached trim to the wall to create a board-and-batten look, and placed shelves up high for out-of-season wear. Everyone has a cubby, including their chocolate lab. For other homey touches, she painted the steps and the door (Life Is A Peach, by Behr). “I couldn’t talk my husband into a pink front door,” she says, “so this is the next best thing!”

Cris Williams @the_lifeathome

COLORBLOCK CUTENESS

“My 3-year-old likes to toss things around—I’m hoping the low hooks will encourage her to hang up her belongings without my singing a song!” says Cris. She boosted this hang out in her home in Houston, TX, by painting half the wall with leftover blue paint (for a similar shade, try Gale Force by SherwinWilliams). A DIYed leather-look envelope made out of vinyl organizes mail: “I made it small, so we’re forced to keep only the important stuff.”

Marissa Vachon @interior.beauty_

BOHO CHILL

The littlest part of Marissa’s apartment in Melrose, MA, has big-time appeal—this nook by her front door, which came with the rack and bench. “When I get compliments on my ‘cozy corner,’ I feel like a bit of a poser, because I didn’t create the structure!” she says. She did, however, max out an eclectic vibe by blending textures: a thrifted woven basket and an Urban Outfitters mirror on the shelf, a furry throw and plants (a marble pothos above and a rubber plant below) on the bench.

to do with paint Brush, roll, and spray your way to cheerier digs.

1

glam up a cane-back chair

No matter how dowdy one is, it’ll look amazing in color. Remove the cushion, dust the frame with a microfiber cloth, spray on several coats of paint plus primer, and let it fully dry. While you’re at it, take the cushion and your choice of fabric (this one is from Zazzle) to Gloss an upholsterer. Deep Blue by Rust-Oleum

2

design your door

Way to make people feel welcome coming and going! This is the fourth time fiber artist Claire Roberts (@nashty_threads) painted the front door in her home in Nashville, TN. “My husband and I may not have money right now for big, expensive projects,” she says, “but this little one brings us so much joy.” DIY FYI Claire went section by section, waiting for each to fully dry before putting delicate-surface painter’s tape on the edge of the part she’d already painted, then starting the next section. stripe out a room

What’s easier than painting a series of stripes on a wall and has even more impact? One wide stripe that continues onto the ceiling (this one is a little over 6 1/2 feet wide). “My client is a car lover, and we saw it as an homage to a racing stripe,” says Atlanta, GA, designer Gina Sims. “We did the headboard in the same color so it looks intentional and continuous.” DIY FYI A laser level is your ceiling BFF: “Use it to know just where to place your tape,” says Gina. Then grab a long-handled roller. PAINT

Impressive enough that everyone will ask where you bought them— but really simple to make. Tape off sections on square planters in any geometric pattern using delicatesurface painter’s tape. Turning the vintage clawfoot tub that came with their Jersey City, NJ, home into a museum-worthy piece was a great way for Joey Meyers and Mark Baehser (@ball_and_claw_vintage) to style their bathroom without renovating the whole thing. Their pal Liz Kamarul, a New Orleans, LA, artist, got the honor, using leftover flat paint from other projects. DIY FYI “Since the tub is rarely used and wear wasn’t a concern, we didn’t put anything over the paint,” says Joey. “Someone else doing this project may want to add a coat of sealer to protect from watermarks and scuffing.”

get a pegboard in good shape

1. Find a silhouette online—your favorite dog breed, or, really, whatever shape appeals. Enlarge and print on 11-inch-by-17-inch paper. 2. Cut out and tape it to Con-Tact paper. Then cut that out and adhere the sticky paper silhouette to a white pegboard. 3. Spray-paint the entire area around the cutout. Use tweezers to remove the cutout while the paint is still wet and let dry.

7

go all in with trim

“When you have beautiful casework, painting it a strong color that contrasts with the wall draws your eye to the details,” says Chicago, IL, designer SuzAnn Kletzien. Fire engine red and sky blue are particularly pleasing. DIY FYI A gloss or semigloss finish is more durable and easier to clean, which is key on window and door frames because they tend to get touched a lot.

match furniture to the wall

“The look of a dresser blending into a room is unexpected and alluring,” says Chicago, IL, designer Guinevere Johnson. Her client painted a piece she already had. Two-thirds are the same color as the wall, and one-third is a distinctly lighter shade—it’s like a visual punchline. DIY FYI The homeowner removed the drawers to paint the fronts and waited 24 hours between doing the two sections of blue on the dresser.

1. Download “h” and “i” templates at hgtv.com/diy-doormat, print on cardstock, and cut out.

2. Place a strip of duct tape to the left of the doormat's center. Position the “i” cutout and secure with a strong adhesive spray, like Super 77 by 3M. To make plain ol’ storage absolutely gorgeous, blogger Courtney Hupp (@homemadehuppy) swirled shapes around the Pottery Barn shelves in her Shawnee, KS, entry. “The pinks and green complement the shelves’ honey tone,” she says. She freehanded the larger-than-life sun and created her own stencil to keep the bursts consistent. DIY FYI “Have your original wall color on hand to touch up any mistakes,” says Molly. It will take the pressure off. PAINT

1. After removing the shade, tape off the finial, harp, bulb socket, base, and cord with painter’s tape. Spray-paint the lamp glossy white. Apply Gloss White by liquid gilding (such as Rust-Oleum Liquid Leaf by Plaid) to the base. Remove the tape while the gilding is still wet and let dry.

style up your stairs

Steps can often use a pick-me-up, even more when they’re in a stairway that leads to a low-light basement. Artist Madeline Shaw (@shapesforthepeople) went colorful and quirky in this Maplewood, NJ, home. DIY FYI “Like any paint job, prep is about 75% of the work,” says Madeline. She painted the treads white, let them dry, then put down contractor’s paper to protect them. She taped off and painted the non-touching navy and peach sections at the same time, along with the white, then did the light blue and yellow.

Designer Jessica Rae Sommer (@jessicaraesommer) and her fiancé spread this project out over two weekends. During the first one, they cleaned the patio of their place in Los Angeles, smoothed on white paint made for concrete with an extendable roller, and let it dry. The next weekend: stencila-thon! They used the Diamant Tile stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils, filling it in with bristled stencil brushes and black paint also made for concrete. DIY FYI “We bought four of the same stencil so we could tackle bigger sections at a time,” says Jessica. PAINT

When people see this bathroom for the first time, they can’t believe it isn’t tile. “They actually touch the wall to be sure!” says blogger Holly Taylor (@calling_allcreators), who lives in Omaha, NE. She got the hex tile effect by painting the bottom of the wall dark gray and the top white, then patterning it with the Metro Hex Tile stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils.

how bad is it? Stuff that stumps us all, answered at last. Phew! NOT BAD AT ALL!

NOT SO BAD!

KINDA BAD!

PRETTY BAD!

REALLY BAD!

SUPER BAD!

PATIO: LISA ROMEREIN; MARSHMALLOWS: GETTY IMAGES

how bad is it to roast marshmallows over a gas flame? If you’re worried that gas might infuse your s’mores with unsavory chemicals, chill. “A propane or natural-gas fire actually burns much cleaner than wood does,” says Mike Pachasa, a food safety expert who shares advice at 4thegrill.com. Just watch out for molten marshmallows tumbling into the firepit, where they could clog the burner and muck up or stain decorative rock or glass. Keep a plate handy to catch drooping globs. “Should a marshmallow fall, turn off the firepit and use a metal spatula to remove as much as you can from the burner,” says Pachasa. Then roast on; most residue will burn into ash. As usual, your main concern will be finding a good marshmallow-roasting stick.

how bad is it if your doorknobs don’t match?

Gold and silver knobs don’t look so hot together (and your inner decorator knows it). “But mixing knob materials, shapes, and styles can add a fun design layer,” says Jami Supsic, HGTV Magazine’s home director. A combo of brass, crystal, and milk glass is charming in a house with vintage touches, and in a modern setting it’s cool to alternate knobs and levers. One-offs such as a colorful ceramic cutie on a kid’s closet also work. “I’ve seen a single knockout knob in a different tone, like a star-shaped gold design, and it makes a great statement,” says Supsic. When you have to replace a knob but can’t find the exact match, go for the same metal type and don’t stress about the finish. Matte, satin, and brushed nickel are very similar, and the same goes for brass labeled polished or bright.

NOT BAD AT ALL!

how bad is it to keep a fish tank by a window?

SUPER BAD! 60 HGTV Magazine

We’re thinking it’s time to relocate.

GETTY IMAGES

No sunbathing for Nemo. The sun’s rays spur the growth of algae, and too much is both unsightly and unhealthy. “Algae remove oxygen from water, and low levels of it can result in lethargy,” says Sharon R. Tiberio, D.V.M., an aquatic veterinarian based in Dallas, TX. A rise in heat—and subsequent dips—are the bigger problem. “Fish can’t regulate their body temperatures and are totally dependent on the environment they’re living in,” says Dr. Tiberio. “Water that gets too hot or cool, or varies throughout the day, can stress out a fish’s system and even result in death.” Keep the tank at 65 to 75˚F for goldfish, 75 to 80 for freshwater tropical fish, 78 to 82 for bettas, and 78 to 84 and saltwater tropicals.

how bad is it to never clean your deck?

If only rain alone did the job! A scrub-down once or twice a year will keep a deck at its best and, if it’s wood, prevent rot caused by dirt and mold that settle into the grains. Stick to a cleaner made for the material (pretreat stains with a bit of undiluted cleaner); use a long-handled, stiff-bristled deck brush; and rinse with the hose nozzle on its strongest setting. “For composite decks, work in 2- or 3-foot-square sections at a time—this way, the sun won’t dry the cleaner and leave streaks before you rinse it,” says Jenny Newhouse, a spokesperson for TimberTech. (Should you decide to use a pressure washer, check the deck manufacturer’s guidelines.) Last step: Naptest that spankin’-clean deck before family members realize you’re free for another chore.

KINDA BAD!

It wouldn’t be summer without grass beneath your toes, and the payoffs can go beyond feeling liberated. Podiatrists say you could stretch and strengthen muscles rarely used when shoes are on, which is one reason barefoot hiking and running is a thing. Studies indicate that connecting with nature in this way—known as earthing and grounding—might also boost your mood and energy. Of course, do your tick-repellent duty, and tread carefully in yards where puppies go potty and on wood decks that could lead to splinters. If you’re considering new composite decking and live in a hotter climate, “you may want to stick to a lighter color, which does not absorb heat from the sun as much,” says Newhouse.

Pro pointers for de-gunking and reviving backyard stuff. At last, you can relax without thinking, Ugh, gross.

your rubber hose

Bathe it in a wheelbarrow or kiddie pool filled with water and 8 cups of white vinegar, then rinse after a few hours, says landscape designer Chris Lambton, a judge on the new discovery+ show Clipped.

To get rid of wax drips inside glass lanterns, scrape with a used gift card or a putty knife.

your cast-aluminum table set When the table

and chairs look dull even after a cleaning, restore sheen with car wax. “I spritz on Wax & Dry spray by Turtle Wax,” says Darla Castleberry, owner of Sunset Patio Restoration Co. in Cave Creek, AZ. That helps with upkeep, too: “Dirt and bird droppings can be wiped right off.”

Good old soapy water can refresh a resin wicker pouf. Get into crevices with a scrub brush and clean stubborn dirt with Goo Gone. Resting flower containers on pot feet spares your deck from mildew and dark rings caused by water damage.

your stone pavers

Be the mason! Reset loose pavers by packing polymeric sand around the sides. Step on them to remove air pockets, says Lambton. Mist the sand, then keep people off for at least 24 hours.

your fabric umbrella To easily

reach the canopy, prop the open umbrella between fence slats or in a bucket of sand and rinse with a hose. “If it’s really dirty,” says Rapinchuk, “wipe it with a damp sponge and a few drops of castile soap, which is strong but biodegradable.”

your polypropylene rug “Clean it in the morning to

give the material time to dry,” says Becky Rapinchuk, author of Clean Mama’s Guide to a Healthy Home. Wash with the spray nozzle set to jet, then scrub in the direction of the fibers; she recommends a plastic bristle broom and Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds. Drape the rug over a railing and flip it occasionally throughout the day.

your outdoor cushions Hand-washing

gives you the best chance of keeping that smooth, taut fabric finish, says Castleberry. She hoses down the whole cushion and scrubs seam to seam with a nylon utility brush and 1 tablespoon of Dawn dish soap dissolved in 3 gallons of water. For machinewashable covers (check!), close the zippers, use the gentle cycle, and slip back over the filler while damp to spread out the material and head off wrinkles. Either way, prop up to dry.

home + help your cotton or polyester hammock Let cotton ones soak in a tub with mild detergent (set aside the wood spreader bars) and knead the rope. “Bleach is safe only for synthetic kinds,” says Jonathan Allen, owner of Outer Banks Hammocks in Wilmington, NC. To clean one: Fill a pump sprayer with 1 cup of bleach, 1 gallon of warm water, and a few squirts of dish soap; spray on. Let the hammock bake in the sun for approximately 20 minutes, then hose off.

your cedar adirondack chairs To deal with algae outbreaks, Lambton power-washes on the lowest setting with a cedar wash (he likes the eco-friendly kind by Wash Safe). “I stand at least 2 feet back to avoid dinging the wood,” he says.

your copper firepit “Make peace with the

fact that copper will develop a patina—to try to get it tarnish-free would be fighting a losing battle,” says Andy Stivers, co-owner of S&S Fire Pits in Hapeville, GA. But you do want a snug weatherproof cover to keep out debris and windblown leaves, and to prevent rain from turning ash into a soggy mess.

Shauna and Jeff

t may be hard to believe, but the color scheme of this home used to be vanilla. “The inside and the outside were blank spaces, with zero wow factor,” says homeowner and designer Shauna Glenn. What the 1951 split-level in Fort Worth, TX, did have was good mid-century bones, including a cozy non-open layout and angled ceilings. “It reminded me so much of my grandparents’ place—I felt an instant connection when we toured it last spring,” she says. One year later, Shauna and husband Jeff Jones have updated the bathrooms; turned a carport into a living room (making the house 3,300 square feet); and brought in a kaleidoscope of color with paint, furniture, and light fixtures. That and artistic touches all around have created an amazingly lively place that’s thrilled the couple’s six grandkids. Shauna mixes and matches without regard for rules. “I like to try out colors in unexpected ways,” she says. “I figure if it makes you feel good, it’s right.”

“I’ve never decorated mainly with orange,” says Shauna, “but the kitchen was very white, it felt true to the mid-century look, and I went for it!” She singled out a juicy tomato orange for the ceramic tile backsplash and the appliances (from Big Chill), and found a tangerine metal pendant on Wayfair; with colors this bold, exact matching shades are beside the point. A splashy toy car painted by Shauna’s friend, artist Captain Casual, fit the under-counter nook perfectly— why not park it there?! The runner is from Revival.

EXTERIOR: SHAUNA GLENN

Bright white paint (Snowbound by SherwinWilliams) refreshed old brick. To pep up the windowless front of her house, Shauna added a cedar accent piece next to the opening leading to the front door.

The couple don’t usually match their tops to the decor—“just a weird coincidence!” says Shauna.

breakfast area You’d think that asking

Shauna to name a favorite color would be like asking her to pick a favorite child, but she can: It’s cerulean blue, and it perks up her morning coffee quite nicely. A glossy white table and taupe cantilevered leather chairs from CB2 look simply mod, while a Dutton Brown chandelier ties into the other orange elements in the space. Those art pieces are 3-D travel photos that Shauna framed.

bathroom “I could have

done wallpaper, but how many people have a graffiti mural in their bathroom?” says Shauna. Exactly. She gave Captain Casual free rein, then got an almond vanity up to speed by painting it red (Cherries Jubilee by Sherwin-Williams). Only a not-boring mirror would do— it’s from Made Goods.

dining room

Shauna hacked chairs from Wayfair by having just the backs reupholstered in a jaunty Pindler fabric and turned the fireplace into a showpiece with wood tiles from The Tile Shop. A floral rug by Wendy Morrison fits right into the anything-goes pattern play. Similarly upbeat and unexpected: a trio of embroidered ceramic cattle heads from a trip to Mexico and a Beatles print, a prized Jeff possession.

Guess who chose the pop of paint? Nope—it was Shauna’s Instagram followers @shaunaglenn. She offered up three options, just for fun, and this blue won. As if she didn’t already dream in color, Shauna paired a graphic MissoniHome duvet with a vintage rug from Chairish. The abstract piece above the bed is by local artist Amy Young. aah, cabin life. Chill, cozy, and— in the case of this ’70s A-frame in Soda Springs, CA—cramped, dark, and dated! That was before designers Christina Valencia and Kele Dobrinski got their hands on it. Kele’s parents, Jim and Kim, had bought the Lake Tahoe–area house for their whole family to enjoy as a getaway. “There’s something so picturesque and quirky about A-frames,” says Christina. “The shape is just fun, like a permanent tent.” The four did the work themselves; it helped that Jim is a general contractor and Kim is the type to stand on a ladder and sand the ceiling. They reimagined all 2,600 square feet, letting in light, opening up the teeny kitchen, and creating two bedrooms out of the giant upper-level great room. Pale wood tones bring the rustic in a chic way, vintage and handmade pieces pile on charm, and jolts of pattern hit groovy notes. “We wanted our home to feel like a cabin at its core but with a brighter take than a typical mountain home,” says Christina. They totally aced it! HGTV Magazine 81

KITCHEN Ash cabinets;

gray quartz countertops; and the matte black pulls, faucet, and light fixtures serve up woodsymeets-modern style. Triangles in the backsplash tiles (by Clé) wink at the home’s A-frame shape. The floors are durable laminate but look like real-deal wood planks.

Our goal was to update without losing the cabin feel. Painting the beams and keeping the knotty pine ceiling did just that. —Christina

relaxed like denim upholstery on a roomy banquette where a big group can pile in. A Novogratz rug plays up the blue. BUNK ROOM

Kele designed the bunks and Jim built them. There’s even a loft, where the kids pretend to camp with flashlights. “They’re always jockeying for the top bunk that has the entrance to it,” says Christina. The blankets are from Perigold.

BATHROOM

The repetition of light wood, gray, and black ties the cabin together. Signs of a home that doesn’t take itself too seriously: a Canadian Mountie statue (vintage), a whimsical bath mat and shower curtain (both by Urban Outfitters), and retro patch art (bought on eBay and framed).

HGTV Magazine 85

BEDROOM Maximizing that A-frame height to their advantage, Kele and Christina added a transom window above sliding glass doors to let in extra sunshine and allow for stargazing. Kele scored the old wood slab that he used to make the headboard for $40 on Craigslist. The black-and-white quilt belonged to his grandmother. Also retro-fab: the lamps, more flea market finds.

Sure, it’s gotten a bit rusty, but that’s part of the charm.

rethink a birdcage

When Debbie Teashon, a gardening pro based in Kingston, WA, spotted this wire beauty on Amazon, inspiration struck. The hinged top made it easy to put in potting soil and presoaked sphagnum moss. She arranged succulents to peek through before hanging the cage from a maple tree. She’s not the only one who appreciates it: “Chickadees in my garden love to perch on the open door.”

make a tire bloom

People aren’t usually thrilled when their car needs new tires, but Roeshel Summerville had big plans for one of her old ones. The Butler, PA, blogger spray-painted an old one turquoise (for a similar look, try Island Splash by Krylon). “I used a sharp 1/2-inch drill bit, and it still took a lot of muscle to drill the drain holes,” she says. Styrofoam peanuts placed below soil offer extra drainage. She draped a chain around a magnolia tree branch, connected the ends inside the tire with an S-hook, and planted pansies and petunias. Wheeeee!

give an old dresser new life

Drawers overflowing with clothes are one thing, but with flowers? Brilliant! “After painting a mural on my deck, I got inspired to add more color,” says Seaside, OR, artist Alisa Burke. She revived a thrifted find with pink exterior paint, prepped the bottom drawer for planting with drain holes and a plastic weed barrier lining (the upper drawer got potted flowers she removes for watering), and attached the whole piece to the siding with a bracket. Geraniums, alyssum, and zinnias have never looked cooler.

hang a homegrown monogram “My husband, Ryan, loves to build stuff, and when I asked for a planter for our front porch, he took it to the next level with a cedar wood initial for our last name,” says blogger Michelle Knox, who lives in Sycamore, IL. They planted impatiens on a slant inside the nearly 4-foot-tall letter, so gravity would keep them from falling out. Says Michelle, “People have always been amazed to see how well flowers grow in it.”

step up your game

Blogger Carlene Blair was looking to add height to her garden in International Falls, MN. A garage sale she was at had an adorably rustic ladder. Aha! “I have plants in old milk cans and laundry tubs, too—I call it junk gardening,” she says. Carlene dug holes for each leg to keep the ladder from tipping over. Of course, she couldn’t put calibrachoa, phlox, alyssum, and verbena in just anything: She used vintage teaand soup kettles.

FLIP IT. Turn a ladder on its side and attach to a •fence or wall as a shelf for potted plants. •TRELLIS IT. Lean a ladder against the side of the house and cover with chicken wire. Plant a pretty

vine—such as creeping fig or morning glory—in front, says Pyle, and weave in and out of the wire, gently guiding the greenery as it grows.

BUILD IT OUT. Starting with an A-frame ladder, lay wood planks across the steps and screw in securely as a base for pots. “Start with a few neutral pots, like terra-cotta or concrete, then mix in colorful glazed or ceramic ones,” he says.

Tricia and William with niece Alexis, 7, who lives with them

Cooking used to be cramped in Tricia and William Page’s old place. Their kitchen had hardly any counter space and few places to stash stuff away. “The whole apartment was only 450 square feet,” says Tricia. So when the couple bought a home in San Francisco, CA, with a short-onstorage kitchen (déjà vu!), they couldn’t wait to renovate. Designer Gina Gutierrez helped them open it to the living and dining rooms and put in a pantry with a barn door. A mix of soft shades was made chic with touches of wood and brass. The new island has been especially amazing for bake-athons with their niece, Alexis, since they can really spread out cookie sheets. “We’ve always loved to cook but now we really love it,” says Tricia.

It all started with a breezy palette. “Our colors are soothing and remind me of water,” says Tricia. The backsplash (by Fireclay Tile), barn door, and island are awash in shades of gray and blue, and the custom hood vent and fridge cover by Special Design Cabinet blend into the cabinetry.

A barn door and brass track, both from Artisan Hardware, bring a hit of hipness. “It looks like art with the diagonal stripes and brass,” says Tricia. Designer Gina played off its shine with brass cabinet pulls by Schoolhouse and pendants by Worley’s Lighting.

VERY CLUTTERPROOF

Former space stealers now live in a walk-in pantry, leaving counters gloriously clear. “Our coffeemaker and toaster are plugged in and ready to go—it’s like having our own coffee shop in there,” says Tricia. Just outside the pantry, everyday dishes are tidily stored on the lower open shelf.
