2020 - 2021

NOTICE ON COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONS The Perse remains committed to offering a broad and exciting range of extra-curricular opportunities but every activity has to operate in line with the guidance we receive from the Department for Education, Public Health England and many national governing bodies. We will be operating an adapted provision for the 2020-21 academic year, where pupil and staff safety remains at the forefront of everything we do. All extra-curricular activity will be guided by the school’s Covid-19 Health and Safety Advice and Guidance and Covid-19 Code of Conduct for all pupils, staff, volunteers and visitors (available on the school website). The main purpose of this publication is to showcase the wide range of activities that will be running in some form and to make clear who the key points of contact for each activity are. Each activity will be individually risk assessed and appropriate Covid-secure arrangements implemented for personal hygiene, face coverings and equipment cleaning. Any venues away from the school site will be carefully vetted to ensure that infection control measures are in place. We will adopt a phased return to our normal programme and this may mean that some activities run less frequently or on year group rotations in the first instance. In a small number of cases, activities may be suspended until such a time when they can be hosted in a Covid-secure manner. Those activities are still included in this booklet so that students and parents are aware that the school hopes to be able to offer these in due course. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING KEY POINTS Timings and Locations • Where possible, sessions will run at their usual times; some venues and timings may change due to risk management and guidance needs. Adjusted Programmes • To accommodate year group bubbles, clubs and societies (unless year group based) will operate either online or with an adapted face-to-face approach (i.e. year groups may be separated or on a rotation). Offsite Trips • Some local trips will begin to operate, but all trips up to Easter 2021 will be non-residential in line with government guidance. This will stay under constant review.

When you read this booklet, try to keep the following advice in mind: ● Get involved! Identify two or three clubs you would like to be involved in and choose them not necessarily because your friends do, but because you are interested in widening your own horizons. ● Think about your own personal qualities and what you would benefit from improving. Try and match them with an activity which will help. ● Commit yourself to attending regularly for at least a term to give it a proper chance. ● Be organised! Sometimes there will be clashes between activities but if you spot this early enough and talk to your form tutor then usually these can be resolved. ● If you feel that the school doesn’t offer an activity which you would like to do, then get in touch with Mr Morgan who will explore the possibility of starting a new club. Perhaps you might wish to establish your own club? 3
The House System Throughout the 2020-21 academic year there will be House competitions in a wide range of sporting, artistic and academic events, usually taking place at lunchtime. Arabic for Beginners
Bridge Club Bridge is one of the world’s most popular card games. It is a sociable game played with four people at a time. It is a game of skill and so takes a short while to learn but the strategy can be as complex as you want it to be. We start with a simplified version for beginners, which gets you playing quickly. We aim to play matches against other schools and take part in national competitions. You can drop in, but regular attendance, especially for beginners, is recommended.
Pupils will learn the alphabet, simple phrases, greetings and useful vocabulary. There will also be the opportunity to play games in Arabic, listen to music, learn about the history and culture of this ancient Semitic language and compare Arabic past and present. If you are interested, please email Mrs N Winter for details, as she tries to be flexible with your availability. When

Cipher Challenge
Digital Literacy
The National Cipher Challenge is an annual competition run by the University of Southampton throughout the Michaelmas term. It is open to students in Years 7-Upper Sixth in secondary schools across the country. It is free to enter and you can work on your own or as a team; we enter quite a few teams of all ages each year. The top prize is £1,000 but there are many other prizes too. In 2016, Siddharth Chandrappa won a Bronze medal. We are building up a tradition of cipher success at The Perse, as our students have frequently won prizes in recent years. There will be a couple of weeks to learn about codes and ciphers before the competition starts in the middle of September. This club is perfectly timed to give you a chance to get together as a team and work on a new problem each week as soon as it is published on a Thursday afternoon. Join the Schoology group for more information!
Digital Literacy gives you the opportunity to easily achieve industry-approved Microsoft Office Specialist qualifications. Each Office program is certificated, which looks good on your University UCAS form and CV. We’d encourage you to try to complete at least one certificate a year to build up some credible evidence of your ICT skills.

What could be better than building a Lego creation, and then adding the ability to control how it moves? Past incarnations involving multiple groups are "robot wars", "races", and a "lab-sized train track", as well as individual contributions such as a "platform lifting system". We also have the ability to program with Lego Mindstorms if you already know how, or if you simply wish to learn something new. This year we also intend to enter a national Lego Robotics competition run by Tomorrow's Engineers, which is open to anyone from Year 7 to Year 9. This will be a fantastic opportunity to use your Lego skills to solve real-world engineering challenges, and to compete against schools across the whole country! When

The Forum
Senior Debating Society
The Forum is a weekly debating club for Years 7 to 9 to engage with current topical questions as well as more universal questions.
Open to all members of Year 10 to Upper Sixth, Senior Debating Society provides an excellent opportunity to develop your ability to form and sustain an argument, while simultaneously enhancing your skills of critical thinking and public speaking. Encompassing a wide and varied range of debating motions, Senior Debating Society will also foster and develop your intellectual curiosity. Debates are held on a fortnightly basis and there are lots of chances to participate in external competitions and workshops.
In the weekly debates our speakers argue the case for their side while posing challenging questions to their opponents. Club members have opportunities to pose questions of the speakers, vote on the motions and even chair the debate! Training in debating and chairing is available from our capable Sixth Form helpers and staff. When

Questionology Society often looks to science to solve the world's biggest problems - from curing diseases to tackling climate change. However, do scientists have all the answers? How can we ensure new discoveries are used to improve society, not harm it? Who should make these decisions? If you're interested in discussing the application of scientific research and innovation in modern society, then Questionology is for you! We will be discussing everything from the ethics of self-driving cars to the economics of space exploration. You will also get the chance to practise your public speaking skills and learn how to convince people around to your way of thinking. When

Extra-Curricular GCSE Courses 30
Modern Foreign Languages Additional extra-curricular GCSEs (Italian, Japanese, Madarin) The school is very pleased to confirm our intention to continue running a package of extra-curricular language options that will provide interested students with the opportunity to study other modern foreign languages in addition to the main curriculum routes.
Italian GCSE (open to Year 9 and above) A two-year extra-curricular course for beginners to reach GCSE-level competency. Commitment is approximately two hours weekly plus home study. Students will be entered for the GCSE in the summer of the second year of study. The cost for this course is £465 per year of study. This includes access to all tuition materials and the examinations.
A three-year extra-curricular course for beginners to reach GCSE-level competency. Commitment is approximately two hours weekly plus home study. You will be entered for the GCSE in the summer of your third year of study. The cost for this course is £465 per year of study. This includes access to all tuition materials and the examinations.
Mandarin Chinese GCSE (open to Year 9 and above) A one-year extra-curricular course for intermediate speakers of Chinese to reach GCSE-level competency. This is a commitment of approximately one and half hours per week. You will be entered for the GCSE in the summer of your one year of study. You will be set an initial assessment to qualify for this course as it is not suitable for beginners. The cost for this course is £465 per year of study. This includes access to all tuition materials and the examinations. For all of the above, a three-week trial period is available, free of charge, at the beginning of each academic year, after which the subsidised annual non-refundable payment of £465 is required to continue with the year. Students who are interested should see Miss Moore in the MFL office, or email jjgmoore@perse.co.uk. We organise the class times around the timetables of those interested, so please speak to Miss Moore in the first instance to discuss your availability. NB: The above courses are designed with a view for the sitting of the GCSE examination at the end of the course. Students must be fully committed to the course, and must make consistent and sustained progress to have the best advantage by the time of the examination. 31
Extra-curricular Computer Science
Fast Track Music As an alternative to opting for music as one of the subject choices for Year 10, there is the opportunity to study fast-track music GCSE after school. In almost all cases, we would expect pupils to have studied music in Year 9 if they are to opt for this. They should also be at least grade 6 on their instrument and should have achieved grade 5 theory before beginning the course. The after-school course takes place on Wednesday from 4.15 – 5.30pm. Details of the course can be found on the OCR website: https://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications/gcs e/music-j536-from-2016/
As an alternative to the main curriculum choice, there is the opportunity in suitable cases for pupils to study extra-curricular EdExcel computer science GCSE after school in Year 10 and Year 11 with the aim of sitting the public exam at the end of Year 11. We would expect pupils to have performed well in Year 9 and be particularly keen programmers if they are to opt for this. In order to maximise the time they have available for programming practice, they should also choose the two-period ICT option in the Year 10 mini-elective. The after-school course carries the usual additional GCSE fee but this will be half the usual extra-curricular annual charge because lessons are only fortnightly rather than weekly. Lessons will take place on Wednesday Week Bs only running 4.10 - 5.30pm, subject to uptake. If you are interested in this option then speak to your computer science teacher during Year 9 to ask for more information or email Mr Gwilt (djgwilt@perse.co.uk) or Mr Baker (pdbaker@perse.co.uk).
It is not now possible for Year 10 to enrol in the course but those in Year 9 might be interested in finding out more information for the next academic year from Ms Pledger.

As an alternative to ancient history as a curriculum choice, there is the opportunity in suitable cases for pupils to study OCR ancient history GCSE as an extra-curricular option in Year 10 and 11, with the aim of sitting the public exam at the end of Year 11. We would expect pupils to have performed well in Year 9 and be particularly keen historians if they are to opt for this, though there is no expectation to have studied ancient history in Year 9. Given the crossover in context and skills required, this option makes an excellent accompaniment to both Latin and Greek, as well as history GCSE. The after-school course carries the usual additional GCSE fee and will likely take place on Wednesdays from 4.10 – 4.50pm and one lunchtime a week, 1.20 – 1.55pm (dependent on the best time for all those in the class). If you are interested in this option then speak to your ancient history teacher during Year 9 to ask for more information or email Mr Foster (sjfoster@perse.co.uk) or Mr Wilbur (rtwilbur@perse.co.uk). Woodworking Club
Archery Club
Overview: In Woodworking Club, students get the chance to learn greenwood carving, machining and steam bending techniques. Previous projects have included a 17 foot cedar strip canoe, stools, bowls, benches, spoons and custom canoe paddles. Once you have mastered the basics you may also get the opportunity to pursue your own woodworking projects. All materials are included in the annual subscription charge and you get to keep what you have made. At the Outdoor Pursuits Centre we have specialised wood carving zones, including elevated axe work stumps, a pole lathe, shave horses and a wide range of specialised tools. In 2019, we also purchased key machinery for large scale projects including a planer thicknesser, bench saw and much more.
Overview: The Perse School Archery Club is open to students of all ages and takes place at the Upper school’s shooting range. It doesn’t matter if you are a complete novice or have done some archery before, the club is open to all abilities and takes place during Friday lunchtimes. Archery Club operates a high student to instructor ratio allowing for consistent shooting progression. Students will predominantly shoot recurve bows over a distance of 10 metres. There will be opportunities to try compound archery and shoot at longer distances. The school is looking to develop competition shooting in the future. If students are looking for a sport to develop their focus and have a competitive streak, archery may be the sport to try! Due to the ongoing global pandemic, Archery Club sessions will run outdoors using separated ranges for each year group. Students will be provided with their own equipment for each session and all surfaces and equipment will be sterilised or quarantined for 72 hours between uses.

Activities: Archery Club is a fun and social way for students to learn the basics of archery. Novice members of the club use low draw weight bows and focus on their shooting stance, draw technique and consistency. We use static and moving targets and there are multiple challenges and games to develop skills and maintain interest. As students advance, they will use higher draw weight bows and begin to focus on accuracy of shots and groups amongst other more advanced techniques. When

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
PES Summit 10 Open to all students in Year 10, PES Summit 10 aims to develop cohesive teams of students with the ultimate aim of competing in a multi-activity trip in a mountainous region of the UK. Teams will journey by bike along trails, by boat across lakes and by foot through the mountains in an adventure race format from summit to sea. Students will be put into small teams for the year and undertake after-school training sessions to prepare both themselves and their team for the challenge.
The Outdoor Pursuits department provides the Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award (D of E) schemes and is a D of E Directly Licensed Centre. Our in-house D of E Manager will assist in signing up for the award online, provide the necessary training for the expeditions section and support students to complete all sections of the award. Training Sessions There are fortnightly drop-in sessions throughout the year which take place on Wednesday lunchtimes between 1.15pm and 1.55pm. The sessions are designed such that students can get assistance and advice on their D of E logs, expedition planning and training framework needs. The D of E Manager will be available to discuss ongoing plans at these sessions.
Activities: PES Summit 10 training sessions will cover a number of skills ranging from navigation, campcraft and cooking to problem solving, teamwork and decision making. Students will also undertake hill walking, paddling and cycle training to meet a safe standard for the expedition.
Signing Up Students wishing to sign up can either undertake the Silver or Gold awards. The expedition section can be completed in Year 11, Lower Sixth or Upper Sixth. Participants must be 15+ for the Silver award and 16+ for the Gold award. Award sections can only be recorded from the appropriate birthday and the expedition section cannot be completed until then. The Silver award can generally be completed within one year. The Gold award usually take two years to complete.
There are two annual trips. The first is a training weekend in the Michaelmas term. The main expedition spans three days in May. The trip is organised in a challenge format with a competitive itinerary that runs throughout the expedition. Students wishing to sign up must commit to Tuesday training sessions and two compulsory trips each year.

PES: Ascent Group PES Ascent Group is the largest group in the whole structure of the Perse Exploration Society. The group has a strict pupil hierarchy and is organised into patrols of eight students in Years 8-9. Within the patrol there is a Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Food Quartermaster and four Ferrets. Six patrols form a section (of which there are four – Earth, Air, Fire and Water). Each section is run by a Year 10 patrol known as the ‘Bears.’ The whole troop is run by seven Year 10 students who are known as the ‘Stags’. Positions of responsibility are gained through growing experience and selection of future leaders is carried out by current student leaders and staff. It is a great privilege for students to be appointed a Stag or Bear, and quite rightly so, as they run the entire group and all camps. Activities: PES Ascent Group dates back to the 5th Cambridge Scout Group. All camps are carried out in Scandinavian style Lavvu teepees and many activities such as pioneering, campcraft, climbing and fire lighting carry on to this day. Trips: There are three annual trips. The first is a training camp which takes place in the Michaelmas term. This is followed by a trip in the Easter holidays, usually the first four days, and a nine-day trip in the summer holidays. Venues vary from year to year and students can look forward to a wide range of activities. Meeting arrangements: During the Michaelmas term, PES Ascent Group meetings will commence at 4.30pm on Fridays at the Outdoor Pursuits Centre. In line with the year group bubble principle, Year 8 & 9 students will attend sessions on a fortnightly basis. Year 10 students will attend on a weekly basis leading sessions at a social distance.

One of the most popular parts of the expedition is the experience of camping out under tarps and in hammocks on remote wooded islands. Students wishing to sign up must commit to Monday training sessions and two compulsory trips each year.
The Summit 12 group is the Sixth Form expedition arm of the Perse Exploration Society. It is open to all students in Sixth Form, irrelevant of previous outdoor experience. Due to the ongoing global pandemic, PES Summit 12 will not run in its usual format as an international mountaineering expedition. Students in Lower Sixth will undertake a canoeing expedition to Sweden in late July. This is an opportunity for those who missed the PES Summit 11 expedition in 2020 to participate this academic year alongside new joiners to Lower Sixth. Should the ongoing global pandemic prevent international travel, an expedition to the Great Glens of Scotland may be offered instead of Sweden.
Trips: There are two annual trips. On signing up, students must commit to all trips. Training takes place in the first half of the Michaelmas half term and the main expedition is in the Summer.
Activities: Students get to learn a wide variety of bushcraft and canoeing skills. This includes learning about natural shelter construction,

National Theatre ‘New Views’ competition ‘New Views' is the National Theatre's annual playwriting programme, which runs from September to April every year. Entrants learn about the art of playwriting with access to a range of scripts, resources and staged performances. In taking part, each pupil will get the opportunity to have online interviews with some of the best industry playwrights who will provide detailed feedback on their working scripts. At the end of the competition each year, one play is chosen as the national winner and is performed at the National Theatre in London with a professional cast and crew, following rehearsed readings of all shortlisted plays. It has yet to be confirmed as to whether this will be possible for the 2020-21 competition. We are immensely proud to have had a number of Perse pupils nominated as finalists for the long and shortlist with one former student having had her work performed at the National.

Football Club
Golf
Golf has proven very popular since the Golf Academy was set up in 2009. There are currently 29 pupils in the Golf Academy (for pupils in Years 4 to 9), including pupils from the Prep School. Every year the school enters a junior team in the Inter Schools’ Golf Challenge competition which is held at Cambridge Lakes. The school also competes in the ISGA matchplay and stroke play competitions and has two senior teams. The senior golf squad, which is for able golfers in Years 9 to Upper Sixth, plays regularly at The Gog Magog Golf Club, especially in the Summer term.
Lower School Football Club runs on Tuesdays after school on the school field and allweather pitch for boys and girls in Years 7 and 8. Each session is run by Mr C Baker (Head of Football) and is a great way for the children to play some competitive and structured football outside of the school day. The club will run until Michaelmas half term and then resume after Lent half term due to the light.

Sixth Form 56
M
any of the societies are aimed at year groups across the school, but some are more specifically aimed at Sixth Formers. Younger pupils should enquire if they would like to attend.
There are also a number of societies which have been started by Sixth Formers, and we are always happy to support new societies. If you have any suggestions, please contact Mr Morgan.
Extension Physics
The Biology Society
The Biology Society aims to provide extension opportunities to pursue our interests in the subject.
Extension Physics will meet once every fortnight and look at solving problems and stretching your knowledge and understanding beyond PreU. It is for anyone interested in physics, but is especially designed for those planning to study physical science or engineering at university. It will be good preparation for Olympiad competitions, university interviews and for bridging the gap between Sixth Form study and university-level science.
Topics beyond the A level syllabus will be investigated, with foci such as anatomy, physiology and genetics being considered in a practical format whenever possible. The society also aims to provide thorough Oxbridge and Olympiad preparation opportunities.

The Norrish Society
STEM STEM aims to encourage students intending to study science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects at university to make links between the different sciences. A programme of events will be published half-termly, but likely topics for sessions include:
If you enjoy discovering new ideas, carrying out practical experiments, seeing inspiring demonstrations and discussing some of the latest advances in chemistry then the Norrish Society is for you. The Perse's chemistry extension club meets each week to expand knowledge beyond the Sixth Form syllabus into fascinating and relevant areas of chemistry. It is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and delve deeper into the subject. The Norrish Society also provides opportunities to prepare for the Chemistry Olympiad and C3L6 competitions.
o Talks from visiting academics, current and recent undergraduates on various science degrees and disciplines (e.g. natural sciences, physics, chemistry, maths, biology, bio-chemistry, engineering, computer science) o Reports from Perse students who have attended science summer schools or undertaken particularly interesting research or work experience
This is an excellent opportunity for university admissions test and interview preparation but we also encourage and welcome anyone with a genuine interest in chemistry to come along
o Presentations on scientific research and careers from members of staff and external speakers o Discussions or debates on topical science issues in the news o The opportunity to research interdisciplinary science topics and recent experiments and present findings to an interested audience o Journal club o Extension questions incorporating more than one scientific discipline While STEM is aimed at Sixth Formers intending to study STEM subjects at university level, particularly in the first half of the Michaelmas term when we will focus on university and Oxbridge STEM subject admissions, all interested Middle School students are also welcome. TATA Materials Science Prize The TATA Materials Science Prize has been created by the Institute of Materials to encourage Sixth Form students to develop an interest in materials science. It involves a combination of teacher-led sessions and individual research, theory and practical work. You gain an understanding of how the microstructure of materials leads to a range of different properties and how we can design new materials for use in different applications. We usually visit the Cambridge Materials Science Department at some point during the year which gives an insight into university research. At the end of the year, you have the opportunity to give a presentation on your research and produce a portfolio of your experiences which can be submitted for the national competition. In recent years a good number of Perse pupils have won prizes for their work, including the top prize. When

The Maclaurin Society meets once a week for an informal talk on a subject of the speaker’s choice. This year we have had talks from students on topics as diverse as Sport in Mathematics, Information Entropy, Origami and The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Staff have given talks on a number of areas too such as the Riemann Hypothesis and Pascal’s Triangle. Although primarily aimed at Sixth Formers, we have a number of keen and enthusiastic younger students who contribute much to the society. You are very welcome to come and listen and there is no obligation to give a talk yourself (although all offers are much appreciated!)
Medical Forum Medical Forum exists to help students gain information and advice on a career in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine. Many meetings are focused on the application or interview process, but some outside speakers and talks of general interest will also be held. Look on SharePoint for announcements about meeting dates/times. Students who would like to obtain specific advice on careers or applications can arrange to see Dr Anderson individually.
