Ontario schools offer various programs to introduce students to skilled trades and encourage them to consider these careers. Skilled trades provide rewarding and high-paying opportunities, with an increasing demand expected by 2026. There are over 140 skilled trades across four sectors: construction, industrial, transportation, and service.

Ontario schools are taking significant steps to equip students with coding skills from an early age.

Ontario is prioritizing Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education to better prepare students for the demands of the future workforce.

Secondary schools in Ontario provide job skills programs like Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) for Grades 11 and 12 students, focusing on specific career paths and industry certifications. Dual credit programs allow high school students to earn credits towards both their diploma and postsecondary certificates or apprenticeships. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) lets students explore apprenticeships in Grade 11 or 12. Cooperative (co-op) education offers students work placements alongside classroom learning.

This proactive approach ensures that students are not only exposed to coding but also gain practical experience, preparing them for a future workforce increasingly reliant on digital and technological proficiency. By embedding coding into the educational framework, Ontario schools are empowering students to adapt and thrive in the evolving landscape of the digital age.

Schools are increasing skilled trades awareness through education and career planning, emphasizing Grade 10 career studies courses and experiential learning opportunities like career fairs, mentorships, and workplace tours. Partnerships with organizations like FIRST Robotics Canada and Skills Ontario provide hands-on experiences and career exploration for students, with a focus on encouraging girls and underrepresented groups to pursue careers in STEM and skilled trades.

The updated curriculum integrates coding into various subjects, spanning from Grades 1 to 9. Students engage with coding in mathematics, science, and technology courses, enhancing their problem-solving abilities and fostering a greater comfort with technology.

In Grades 1 to 8, students engage with the updated science and technology curriculum, while Grade 9 students embark on the de-streamed science course. This strategic shift equips students with real-world skills tailored to the expanding sectors of the economy, nurturing their abilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. By fostering STEM proficiency at an early age and eliminating streaming, Ontario is ensuring that students are well-equipped to meet the evolving challenges and opportunities in these critical fields, contributing to a more innovative and competitive future.

Scholarships are for everyone Scholarships, bursaries and awards can significantly change your university experience. As a student applying to universities, be sure to research every funding opportunity. Following a few key tips could change your life! 1. Check if an application is required. For example, at the University of GuelphHumber, every high school applicant with an admission average starting at 75% is automatically considered for our Renewable Entrance Scholarship. Our Founders’ Academic Merit Scholarship and bursaries require an application.

2. Check deadlines. Our $36,000 Founders’ Academic Merit Scholarship has a deadline of January 25. Make sure you apply to all the scholarships at the schools you are interested in by their deadlines as you may not have selected your top school yet. 3. What qualifications are required? Qualifications can include, grades, need, volunteerism, etc. For example, our Registrar’s Need-Based Entrance Bursary looks at need and our in-course Diversity and Community Engagement Scholarship for students that are Black, Indigenous or People of Colour, and looks at the extent and impact of engagement in the community and/or at the University of Guelph-Humber.

4. Check for renewability. Some university scholarships are only offered for first year, while others can continue/ renew. Our Renewable Entrance Scholarship has renewal amounts ($1,000 to $4,000) each year and you are eligible to renew for three years after admission. “I am eternally grateful to have stumbled upon the Founders’ scholarship the evening it was due! In the application, I shared the volunteer work I enjoyed doing throughout high school—from clubs and councils, to sports teams, tournaments and work with nonprofits—why it was important and how these experiences shaped the person I am today,” explains Lauren Abela. “Being chosen as a Founders’ recipient can only be described as life changing. It meant I wouldn’t have to work so much and could instead focus my time on studying, learning and experiencing. It

also proved that my volunteer work did not go unnoticed and is appreciated.” Lauren is a recent UofGH Psychology graduate. She received the Founders’ Academic Merit Scholarship and additional scholarships and awards adding up to more than $36,000! UofGH wants to reward your success AND ease the financial stress of tuition. Fund your university education with a combination of scholarships, bursaries and other in-course awards. At UofGH, you will earn an honours degree and a college diploma, more than the typical four-year honours degree program. Vision for Equity in Ontario’s Postsecondary Education In a bid to enhance accessibility to higher education across Ontario, the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO) has laid out a comprehensive plan. This plan is centred on ensuring equity in access, opportunities, support, and outcomes for all students in the province’s universities and colleges. HEQCO’s overarching goal is to broaden its understanding of who has access to postsecondary education in Ontario and what services and support systems they can rely on. To achieve this, HEQCO will: 1. Extend Research: The council will expand its research to encompass equitable participation and outcomes for Ontario students. By doing so, it hopes to unearth and address disparities within the postsecondary education system. 2. Equity Focus: HEQCO aims to bring to light the disparities exacerbated by the pandemic, emphasizing equitable access and

opportunities throughout students’ postsecondary experiences. 3. Regional Equity: Building capacity to analyze and report on regional equity indicators will be vital for fostering equity on a provincial (system-level) scale. 4. Lifelong Learning: The council will concentrate on entry points for lifelong learning, acknowledging that education is a lifelong journey.

HEQCO’s comprehensive plan reflects its dedication to making Ontario’s postsecondary education system more accessible, equitable, and responsive to the evolving needs of its students

and the job market. Through datadriven research and a focus on lifelong learning, HEQCO is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of higher education in Ontario.

5. Microcredentials: Exploring the potential of microcredentials as tools for retraining and reskilling, HEQCO seeks to align education with the rapidly changing demands of the workforce.

Are you looking for a partner to help you prepare for emerging opportunities in fields like cyber security, the skilled trades, or the electric vehicle sector? St. Clair College has been transforming lives and strengthening communities for over five decades, and some significant recent investments have primed the college, their 120 programs, and their 14,000 students for extraordinary success.

Preparing the Next Generation of Business Leaders and Tech Innovators In 2022, St. Clair opened the Zekelman Centre of Business and IT, a new space on its Windsor campus which is home to 12 programs including the college’s Honours Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Information Communication Technology (ICT), and Canada’s largest Cisco Certified Networking program. The Zekelman School of Business & Information Technology additionally offers programs such as Data Analytics for Business, and resources such as the Enactus Genesis Entrepreneurship Centre for students seeking to lead and grow their own businesses.

Transforming Traditions: Embracing the Future of Skilled Trades Opportunities in the skilled trades continue to grow as manufacturers and construction companies sort through retirements and increased demand. St. Clair makes it easy to kick-start your skilled trades career with unique “Earn While You Learn” programs for in-demand careers like CNC machinist, or tool or mold maker. These programs can be completed in under a year, with the bulk of your studies comprising 40 weeks of paid shop-floor training. Graduates receive a one-year certificate and are exempt from their first year of apprenticeship. Thinking about accelerating your career? With St. Clair’s proximity to major automotive manufacturing plants, its Ford Centre for Excellence in Manufacturing, and cutting-edge programs like Electric Drive Vehicle Technician, students and graduates are well positioned for successful careers in the modern automotive sector. “The demand for skilled trades in our region has grown significantly,” said Lido Zuccato, Dean of Engineering Technologies, and Skilled Trades for St. Clair College. “New technologies related to skilled trades, automobility, and electrification are evolving exponentially. The students

who graduate from our programs are prepared to enter industry with confidence.”

Empowering Communities, Fulfilling Dreams Whether in business, health, trades, or community services, St. Clair’s programs and services go beyond what happens in the classrooms. The college is focused on meeting the needs of employers, helping learners find work, and giving back to the community in tangible ways. St. Clair offers work integrated learning opportunities in nearly all of its programs, ensuring its graduates have developed practical, hands-on skills and relevant local industry connections by the time they walk across the convocation stage. Many of those students go right back to work after graduation, and their well-honed skills contribute to the 100% employer satisfaction that St. Clair enjoyed in the most recent Colleges Ontario survey.

All throughout the job search process, St. Clair Career Services supports its students with presentations and workshops, resume critiques, mock interviews, and much more, while students wishing to continue their studies benefit from articulation and pathway agreements that empower them to build upon their education elsewhere in Ontario, in Canada, and internationally. It’s not just businesses and careers than benefit from St. Clair’s presence in the Greater Windsor area, however. Over 243 community organizations were supported by the St. Clair community in 2022-2023, with each connection providing additional opportunities for learning as well as valuable contacts for students. That community impact occurs yearround, as St. Clair offers programs beginning in the fall, winter, and spring. Applications are open now for 2024 programs at St. Clair via ontariocolleges.ca.
