Australian Opal Series – The Kangaroo

2013 1oz Silver Proof Coin
This wonderfully crafted coin is the third release in the popular Australian Opal series. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. The reverse design incorporates an iconic kangaroo detailed in pure Australian opal. The outer panel of the coin depicts Sturts Desert Pea leaves and blossoms, a first crescent moon and the Southern Cross star constellation. Packaged in an illustrated shipper and presented in a display case, which features a light that turns on as you open the lid to represent the moon shining on the nocturnal creature, the coin is complemented by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. The Perth Mint will release no more than 8,000 of these Opal Kangaroo coins.

On 18 June 1987, the Australian Government approved the minting of platinum and silver coins by The Perth Mint. In September the following year, the nation's first platinum Koala coin was released alongside a commemorative medallion. To celebrate this remarkable event, this special issue features a replicated reverse design of the original coin. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1/2oz of 99.95% pure platinum, this coin is issued as Australian legal tender and includes a unique 'P25' mintmark to signify the anniversary. To authenticate the coin, each release is accompanied by a silver medallion which features The Perth Mint's iconic swan logo, a special 'PK25' mintmark, and the individual set number on the reverse. Each medallion's obverse bears the inscriptions AUSTRALIAN KOALA 25TH ANNIVERSARY 2013 PROOF ISSUE and MAXIMUM MINTAGE 1,200. The tenth coin from this amazingly popular series is struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality and features the Aurora Australis, also known as the Southern Lights. An aurora is a dramatic display of coloured light seen in the night sky above the polar regions. The phenomenon occurs when charged particles, emitted from the sun, interact with Earth's magnetosphere creating glowing gases in a kaleidoscope of colours. Within an outline of Antarctica depicted on the coin's reverse, a human observer stands beneath the colourful Aurora Australis, while a snow vehicle appears in the distance. Special ink has been used in the colouring of the coin, which allows the Aurora Australis to glow in the dark. It truly is a sight to behold! On ANZAC Day we honour all those who have given their lives in the service of their country. This year's tribute salutes the engineers who have served, and continue to serve, in the Australian Defence Force by providing combat engineering, construction and other technical support.
