Famous Ships That Never Sailed – Pequod and Flying Dutchman

NEW RELEASE

2013 1oz Silver Proof Coins

The exciting new Famous Ships That Never Sailed series captures the unforgettable tales of the legendary tall ships bound in the pages of literature and the classical arts. The first two coins feature the Pequod and the Flying Dutchman in proof quality struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver. The reverse of the Pequod coin features a representation of the famed ship and the sperm whale, Moby Dick. All but one of her crew were victims of Captain Ahab's obsession to hunt and kill the white whale in Herman Melville's literary classic. A phantom ship believed to foreshadow disaster to superstitious sailors, the Flying Dutchman was immortalised by German composer Richard Wagner in the opera of its name, Der fliegende Holländer. The coin's reverse portrays a representation of the vessel floating above a rough sea amid lightning. Beautifully presented in a wooden case in the shape of a book with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, the coins are issued as Tuvalu legal tender with each obverse depicting an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
