Tips from Your Local PGA Pro at Ledene Golf Centre In this months article we are going to cover the dreaded SHANKS. Its a word in golf we don’t want to talk about let alone think about but in reality it is not far away from being a good shot. A Shank is probably the most destructive shot in golf where the ball makes contact with the hosel (where the shaft enters the head of the club) as opposed to the centre of the club. Whether your a professional or an amateur at some stage you have hit one. Once you have hit a shank it can have a real mental affect on the rest of your round. The shank is mainly caused by an incorrect swing path where the club goes too much behind the toe line in the back swing with the shoulders throwing the club out creating a very steep out to in swing path and secondly another fault that can cause a shank occurs when the backswing is to flat causing the body in the downswing to straighten up, leaving the arms and club to work to much away from the body and to the right of your intended target causing the ball to be hit out of the hosel of the club. Both these faults are caused by an incorrect swing path. If you have been suffering with this shot try to make sure you have the correct balance at address, the weight on the balls of feet, another common fault is pushing the weight too much on to the toes, once this has been achieved make a good shoulder turn, this will help you to take the club back and create the necessary width in the backswing, allowing the club to swing on its correct swing path. If this shot still persists try this drill below to help you achieve the correct swing path into the ball. DRILL: Place a head cover or alignment stick on the ground just outside your ball and a tee peg just clearing the heel of the club, this will create a gateway for the club to swing through. If you keep catching the head cover whilst practicing this drill it will show that the swing path is still incorrect. As you practice aim to hit the ball between the head cover and tee peg, this will help you make contact with the ball out of the centre of the club face as opposed to the hosel and avoid hitting the demoralising shank

A Word From Your MP One of my favourite activities as an MP is visiting local schools in my constituency. I was therefore delighted to be invited, to attend the A Level presentation ceremony at Codsall Community High School. CCHS has a long tradition of academic excellence and was, this year, the top performing school for A Levels results in Staffordshire. We are extremely lucky in South Staffordshire to have schools offering such a high quality of education. Much of this is down to the extreme hard work and dedication of the teaching staff, but it is impossible for them to do their job without continued financial support. I have long held that rural constituencies, like South Staffordshire, deserve a greater share of the total national funding. In South Staffordshire, the average spending per pupil is £5,129, £930 less than in the neighbouring authority of Wolverhampton. Indeed, the county of Staffordshire is ranked 140 out of 151 education authorities in England. In December of last year, I wrote to the Secretary of State for Education, The Rt. Hon Michael Gove MP, on this issue and the Secretary of State confirmed that he is committed to addressing the ‘unfairness’ that exists in the allotment of school funding. This is not the only good news to be delivered on the funding front. The Government recently announced an extra £2.35 billion to create more school places. This funding is in addition to the £5 billion that is already being spent in this parliament and means that, between 2014 and 2017, schools in Staffordshire will receive £23,580,423. It is the first time that councils have had 3-year allocations of funding to spend on school places, with the idea being that Staffordshire Council can plan ahead and ensure every child has a school place. While the Government has already created 260,000 new school places, this announcement means that thousands more are now on the way. Furthermore, in December 2013 it was announced that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in South Staffordshire have been allocated £2,212,000 for 2014/15 to help them achieve their full potential. The Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools so that they can support their disadvantaged pupils and close the attainment gap between them and their peers. The Government has increased Pupil Premium funding to £1.875 billion in 2013-14, with schools attracting £900 per disadvantaged child, with an additional payment of £53 for primaryaged pupils. In 2014-15, the funding will rise to £2.5 billion, with £1,300 for primary-aged pupils, £935 for secondary-aged pupils and £1,900 for all looked-after children, adopted children and children with guardians. This means, in total, pupils in South Staffordshire will have received £5,621,000 between 2011 and 2015. Funding for education in South Staffordshire is improving, but there is still much that can be done. I aim to continue to work hard to ensure that our schools gain a fair deal and that our pupils continue to receive the best education. I am very much looking forward to finding out what questions I will be asked by pupils in the years to come. To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150
