Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody.... Last month we celebrated Perton’s birthday, stopping to remember some of the stories of the last 40 years. Next month our nation, and many others around the world, will stop to remember the sacrifices made in conflict. We will hold our Service of Remembrance,10am Sunday 13th November in Church, followed by an Act of Remembrance, just before 11am at the Memorial Stone. All welcome. Stopping and remembering are important. Our lives in 2016 are extremely busy and frantic, packed with the myriad and often competing demands of work, family, home life, perhaps school, as well as commitments to clubs or organisations to which we belong. Weeks fly by - how often do we hear, or say, “I can’t believe it’s October already!”… “Where has the year gone?”… It’s good to stop… to remember… If the date were not fixed in the diary, year after year - 11th November - it’s easy to imagine that, despite the best intentions, many of us wouldn’t stop and remember. We need specific occasions when we will stop… and remember. These might involve stopping and remembering an anniversary; a person; an event - choosing to time out from the hectic pace of life: stopping… remembering. On Sunday 6th November at 4pm we have our annual Memorial Service where we stop and remember those we love who have died, to which all are welcome. On every Sunday at 10am we stop and remember Jesus, remember God’s unconditional love for each of us. Why not join us, stop, and remember?

Wild About Perton in October..... Picking its way along the roof, a confident striking bird with its black, white and splash of blue plumage, searches out any food that’s going, especially insects and spiders in amongst the nooks and crannies of the roof tiles. A noisy and conspicuous bird, it was once extensively persecuted, but is now quite common. A magpie is often within earshot with its distinctive chattering call grabbing your attention from a nearby tree. They are social birds, found in loose flocks of around ten individuals, which call noisily to each other as they search for food. The magpie has been associated, historically, with many traditional beliefs; it was thought an omen of bad luck to see one. In Staffordshire, as in many other counties, there is a tradition of raising your hat to a magpie on sight. Another tradition holds that you should say "good morning Mr Magpie". Magpies have been falsely accused of predating the eggs of song birds, whereas one of the main culprits is that purring bundle of fur sleeping in the warmest spot in the house. The domestic cat, it has been estimated, kills over 275 million wild animals, including wild birds, in the UK each year. However, the highest single cause of song bird decline is the increasing intensification of agriculture and the loss of suitable habitat. Autumn is also a good time to see and hear our two most attractive and softly spoken song birds, which gather in large flocks at this time of the year. The small, rotund, pale ball with a tail; long tailed tit, tinkles softly through the garden bushes and trees, seemingly impervious to the watcher below. Also small, the goldfinch, flits from tree top to tree top in large flocks, calling tellit, tellit, tellit as they burst racing for cover in the next tree. Wild About Perton is teaming up with Groundworks Trust West Midlands to improve the bio-diversity of the river Penk which runs through Perton. We would welcome your help or join us for our next monthly wildlife walk on Saturday 5th November leaving Perton Library at 2pm.

A Word From Gavin Williamson............... Although the busy summer calendar has come to an end, there was one event that I was very much looking forward to attending, the revived Perton Show. I always greatly enjoy these community focused events as they provide a great opportunity for me to meet with residents celebrating their village and also chat about any issues they might have. This year, I was honoured to be asked to open the show, which was last held in 2000, and has made a fantastic comeback in the same year that Perton has been hosting some truly wonderful 40 th anniversary celebrations. It was a packed day with activities such as a dog show, a brilliant array of stalls, guess the weight of the marrow competition and a very impressive show which took place in the Civic Centre. I was astonished to discover that there were 84 different classes with over 400 entries across a variety of areas including crafts, cookery, art, writing, photography and film, flower arranging and horticulture, together with 29 categories for specifically for juniors, just proving how much talent we have here in Perton. In honour of Perton’s 40th birthday celebrations a ‘Walk of Thanks’ took place, taking in different parts of the village giving visitors and residents the opportunity to learn more about the area, perhaps picking up on some historical knowledge that they had not known before. In addition to the walk there was a fantastic History and Heritage exhibition that took place in Perton Library. It was an absolutely brilliant and busy day with some incredibly ingenious entries in all classes of competitions. A huge thank you must go to each one of the organising committee who brought back this wonderful day and tied it in so exceptionally to the anniversary celebrations. We are extremely lucky in Perton to have a packed annual calendar of events, with something for everyone to enjoy and I very much hope that the show returns next year so we can once again celebrate all wonderful things Perton.

The SME (Small to Medium size Enterprise) business sector is often seen as the nursery for the larger businesses of tomorrow. There’s no doubt that the people who take on the challenge of running their own businesses are brave, they must believe in themselves, they must have a solid business plan and a method to make the plan work. As a Financial Wealth Expert for over 35 years I have experienced seeing some clients make absolute fortunes from their little acorn becoming a mighty oak. When they do our services can help them to reduce the tax liabilities that undoubtedly become associated with running a successful and profitable business. What I’ve also come to learn is that companies and their chief executives and key personnel are often so busy becoming successful that they fail to look at the basic needs of themselves and more importantly their families. It is hard to argue against the fact that a managing director if pressed to replace themselves in their own company would struggle to find a single person who would work the hours they do, accept the remuneration that they do, have the depth of knowledge about the business that they do, have the understanding relationship with their Bank and Creditors that they do. In fact they would probably have to employ two or three people to cover all the things that they take for granted is part of their workload. The other aspect of this is that behind most business entrepreneurs there’s a partner at home sometimes with children and a mortgage that needs paying every month, school costs, food and all the other normal costs of living. In the unfortunate position of this entrepreneur loosing their life either due to accidents, terminal illnesses or indeed if they are prevented from working due to disability or long term illness, the business undoubtedly will suffer, but could it not also be argued that the partner and children and family of the entrepreneur will suffer a fate much worse. It’s sad but true in many cases the simple act of placing some life insurance cover or some other critical or terminal illness, income replacement insurance or indeed a cocktail of all of these, is the last thing on the mind of the entrepreneurial business owner, after all were all invincible aren’t we??? If it were to be pointed out that a large number of you currently reading this article would be putting yourself, your partner or your family into a worse financial position than a Local Public Transport bus driver would that shock you?? The reason I point this out is that Bus drivers (in the majority of cases) get 3 times their salary death in service life insurance, they get paid leave if their ill, they get a pension scheme and they can also select to have private medical insurance added to their package of employee benefits. So if you’re serious about your business, if you love your partner and your family don’t you think they at least deserve the security and peace of mind that is afforded to the families of a bus driver? Call: 01902 422333 or Email: info@fscinvestments.co.uk We will always try to place your money in the most suitable place, at different times to suit your personal requirements.
