A College of First Choice... Absolutely!

R. Todd Simpson Greetings from the hills of Peru! Nebraska’s first college continues to enjoy tremendous student and faculty engagement and a growing sense of relevance in the Southeastern Nebraska region.  You are a part of that growth. You are Peru Blue!  In 2011, PSC unveiled the College’s Sesquicentennial Strategic Plan. The plan’s goals, objectives and strategies run through 2017 … Peru State’s 150th Anniversary. The planning process, facilitated by PSC President Dr. Dan Hanson, included students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members. (You can review the Sesquicentennial Strategic Plan in its entirety at http://www.peru.edu/ s t r at e g ic -pl a n /s t r at e g ic plan.pdf.)  One of the most compelling aspects of the plan is the College’s newly defined vision statement … “Peru State College will be a college of choice fostering excellence and student achievement through engagement in a culture that promotes inquiry, discovery and innovation.”  A college of choice … a college of first choice. Absolutely!

For the past several years, even during the strategic planning process itself, PSC has been striving to become exactly that … a college of first choice in the region. Whether by refining educational programs and improving the student experience, or by investing in infrastructure and capital improvements, Peru State is working to give students, be they on-campus, commuters, on-line or parttime, the best educational experience possible.  Certainly, that kind of refinement and renovation requires commitment from all PSC stakeholders. And that commitment has come with unbridled enthusiasm.  Enhanced programs such as College 101 are better preparing students for the rigors of the college experience. College 101 provides students with similar disciplinary interests opportunities to develop skills needed for collegelevel work. Peru State has received strong reviews for 101 and the faculty continue to tailor the program to meet student needs.  New programs are also coming on-line to broaden student perspectives. In 2010-11 PSC began the Distinguished Speaker Series. Nationally and internationally known speakers … such as Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize winning author … have visited Peru, worked with students and provided enlightening and engaging presentations.  Programmatic growth is not the only enhancement taking place at Peru State these days. The College’s enriched curriculum requires more up-to-date facilities. In the past few years a number

of PSC facilities have been updated. Most recently was the complete renovation of the Jindra Fine Arts Building. (If you haven’t been to the Campus of a Thousand Oaks recently, come by and tour Jindra.)  In addition, the Eliza Morgan Residence Hall is in the final phase of reconstruction. Done in three stages so students could continue to live there, the Eliza Morgan renovation will be complete by the end of Summer. Upperclassmen have actually been petitioning to move back on campus to live there!  The College is not standing still. New programs and new facility needs are right around the corner. These improvements will further ensure PSC’s transition to the college of choice in the Southeastern Nebraska region.   P r o g r a m m a t i c improvements include the creation of the Institute for Community Engagement (ICE). ICE will provide students with community leadership opportunities aimed at enhancing educational outcomes and career prospects of our students while improving the prominence of the College. Students will have enriched educational and personal growth experiences, be introduced to service learning and leave college with a competitive advantage in the job market.  Needed facility enhancements will include a renovation of Park Avenue to ensure student safety (walking to and from the Centennial Complex and ball fields), the restoration and modernization of the Oak Bowl Complex and addressing needs at both Delzel and the Student Center. While all these

efforts address safety and capacity issues, there is one other very important element … appeal.  Peru State will never be a college of choice … or even the college it should be … while we still have 30% of our campus in subpar conditions. And that 30% is made up of the most visited and public facilities on campus … the Campus entrance (Park Avenue), the Oak Bowl and the Student Center.  Does Peru State College have big plans for the future? Absolutely! Can PSC become the college of choice in southeastern Nebraska? Without question.  And to meet those goals and secure that future

the College needs you. PSC needs your interest, enthusiasm, pride … and, of course, your support.  Whether by contributing to a general fund scholarship, or by contributing to a major construction effort, or by remembering Peru State in your estate plans, your care and dedication will help PSC become the college of choice in Southeast Nebraska.  Thank you for your commitment and support. Go Cats! Live Blue!

Peru State’s Dynamic Duo Lead Teachers and Students Across the State… and Nation Shared interests in history and culture have brought longtime PSC professors Dr. Dan Holtz and Dr. Sara B. Crook together many times in their illustrious careers, and their leadership has expanded well beyond the campus, across the state, and soon… the nation. Both professors have been elected to lead a statewide organization in 2012. A native of Ord, Neb., Dr. Dan Holtz, professor of English, has been elected president of the Nebraska State Historical Society Board of Trustees. He has served on the board since January 2008. Holtz said, “It’s an honor and a challenge to be elected president of the State Historical Society Board. Throughout my life, I have gotten great satisfaction from learning about Nebraska’s engaging history and teaching others, and I Dr. Dan Holtz appreciate the opportunity to have a say in how that history is shared with all Nebraskans.” A native of Central City, Neb., Dr. Sara B. Crook, professor of Social Science, has been elected chair of the Nebraska Humanities Council Board of Directors. She has served on the board since January 2007. According to Crook, she is pleased to lead the Nebraska Humanities Council in its efforts to enhance the quality of life across the state by promoting a better understanding of our history and culture. “Our activities are truly statewide,” she said. “We hold many of our events in rural areas to provide access to the humanities to all Nebraskans.” Both professors have been involved in both organizations. Holtz has been a longtime presenter for the Nebraska Humanities Dr. Sara B. Crook Council Speakers Bureau, telling the stories of the people who came to and through early Nebraska in his Nebraska through Song and Story program. Crook is also involved in the Speaker’s Bureau, portraying early settler Barbara Kagey Mayhew Bradway in Nebraska’s Winding Road to Statehood: In the Footsteps of a Female Settler. In addition, Crook is a life member of the Nebraska State Historical Society, serving on its Board of Trustees from

1997 to 2002. She was President of the Board in 2000 and 2001, and encouraged Holtz to get involved in the organization when her term ended. Another way these professors have expanded learning in their respective areas is through Peru State’s Trails and Tales Tour and Institute. Together, Holtz and Crook serve as codirectors of the Institute. First offered in June of 1996, this every-other-year interdisciplinary program has taken more than 300 teachers, students, PSC alumni, and others who appreciate Nebraska’s heritage on statewide tours of the state’s important historical and literary sites. In October 2012, for the first time, Trails and Tales VIII, “Exploring the Roots of American History and Literature,” will venture away from Nebraska and the plains to explore the foundations of American history and literature in an adventure spanning the east coast from Williamsburg, Virginia, to Concord, Massachusetts.

Trails and Tales East Coast History and Literature Tour Trails and Tales VIII, “Exploring the Roots of American History and Literature,” is the eighth offering of Peru State College’s popular and innovative interdisciplinary history and literature tour. And, again, Peru State alumni will get the first opportunity to sign up. This time the nine-day chartered bus tour will feature numerous stops at sites which illustrate American Colonial and early United States history. Additionally, the tour will feature stops at the homes, birthplaces, and, even, graves of American literary giants. Transportation arrangements to Norfolk, VA, to commence the tour, and from Boston, MA, to conclude the tour, are to be made and purchased individually. The cost of the tour is $2,449 (based on double occupancy), $3,389 (based on single occupancy) which includes all transportation (between Norfolk, VA and Boston, MA), lodging, meals (except 2 lunches), admissions, tips, and taxes. Your only expenses on the tour would be previously mentioned 2 lunches, individual purchases, souvenirs, or alcoholic beverages. A $100 deposit is required to hold your reservation in the Tour. The deposit is fully refundable until August 1, 2012. Deposits are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The balance of the tour is due August 1, 2012. No refunds are allowed after that date unless the tour slot is filled by another person. Spots on the tour are limited, and this one promises to be particularly memorable. So join your fellow Peru State friends on this journey sponsored by your alma mater, Nebraska’s first college.

Ediger Named Peru State College’s 2012 Teacher Excellence Award Winner Peru State College (PSC) Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Dr. Thomas Ediger has been named the institution’s 2012 Teacher Excellence Award Winner, marking the third time he has been granted the distinction. Ediger will be honored during PSC’s graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5 in the Al Wheeler Activity Center. PSC President Dan Hanson said, “It is rare that one individual has so much impact on a campus culture. Long a master of student engagement, Dr. Ediger’s tireless efforts were immediately recognized by everyone involved in the decision-making process for this award. Tom, his students and their performances give the campus a sense of heart and soul that is deeply appreciated. He is well-deserving of this honor and I congratulate him on this achievement.” Dr. Thomas Ediger Ediger said, “Peru State College is fortunate to have many first-rate teachers, so it is an honor to be recognized in this way. The balance of faculty responsibilities among teaching, professional development and service works well for me. I am very grateful to be part of the Peru State faculty.” The Teacher Excellence Award is given annually to one outstanding full-time faculty member at each of the three state colleges, Peru, Wayne and Chadron. To be considered, a faculty member must have a minimum of four years consecutive employment at the college, have taught a minimum of 15 credit hours during the previous academic year, and have an active and positive record of service to students as an academic, professional or personal advisor. Candidates must also have demonstrated involvement in faculty development programs, a superior level of teaching effectiveness and a record of public service. Recipients of the campus award from each of the colleges are finalists for the Nebraska State College System’s George Rebensdorf Teaching Excellence Award. Ediger joined the Peru State faculty in 1979 where he directs the Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers and teaches courses in music theory, music history, music education and piano. He is an active performer, composer and a popular piano and vocal clinician/adjudicator in the region. His most recent compositions are The Land of Oops, a chamber opera for the Madrigal Singers, and Psalm 121 for choir published by Concordia Press. His piano and composition students have often won state and regional competitions. Ediger founded Peru State’s Piano Extravaganza in 1990, an annual event that brings more than 200 pianists to campus for day-long rehearsals and a final performance where, under his direction, 30 pianists simultaneously play 15 pianos. He coordinates the college’s Annual High School Show Choir Festival and annual Choral Festival Honor Choir. Ediger is also director and producer of PSC’s annual “Holiday Madrigal Dinner,” which features the Peru State Madrigal Singers in a fully costumed Renaissance dinner with traditional madrigals, originally composed music, and a variety of musical and theatrical entertainment. Ediger is currently treasurer of Nebraska Music Teachers Association, having previously served the organization as president. He was honored by the association in 2008 as their Distinguished Teacher of the Year and Service Award Winner. In March 2009, Dr. Ediger was awarded the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Foundation Fellow Award in recognition of his service and leadership. He has served as director of the MTNA West Central Division and as a member of the Board of Directors.

He is currently on the MTNA Foundation Fund’s national development committee. Ediger earned a Bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Nebraska. He holds a Master’s degree in piano performance and a doctorate in theory and composition from the University of Northern Colorado. Ediger has also completed postgraduate work at Portland State University, Yale University and in Graz, Austria. He holds the permanent national teacher certification in piano and theory through the MTNA.

As a school and athletic program, Peru State has so many positives that I look forward to working towards success for many years to come.”  In addition, Balogh added, “I look forward to working with a wonderful group of girls. As a coach, I believe it is important to work hard and have fun at the same time and so far, the girls here at Peru State have a good understanding of this concept.”  The Bobcats finished last season with an 11-18 record and graduated six seniors. Balogh anticipates hitting the recruiting trail immediately to help replace those seniors and to bolster the entire squad.

Five Scholar-Teams for 2010-2011  The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced that Peru State College (PSC) had five of their eight athletic teams named as 2010-11 Scholar-Teams. The Bobcat volleyball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, softball, and football teams all earned the recognition for the past academic year.  The Lee (Tenn.) University women’s golf team was named the 2010-11 NAIA Scholar-Team of the Year. The Lady Flames finished

in the top spot with a 3.86 grade point average during the 2010-11 academic year. A record 934 teams, an increase over last year’s 857, received the award.  Joining Lee to round out the top five are Bryan (Tenn.) women’s cross country (3.83), Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) women’s cross country (3.81), Iowa Wesleyan volleyball (3.80) and tied for the fifth spot is Shorter (Ga.) women’s golf (3.79) and Hastings (Neb.) volleyball (3.79).

Biola (Calif.), Concordia (Neb.) and Hastings had the most teams represented by a school (18). Over 12% of the schools receiving the award had a 3.5 or higher grade point average.  For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all varsity student-athletes certified as eligible. The average was

figured solely on the past academic year and was not cumulative.  The Bobcat volleyball team, coached by Lexie Baack, finished with a team gpa of 3.55, good for a tie for 77th overall, putting them in the top eight percent of the 934 teams.  Dr. Johann Murray’s cross country team completed the academic year with a team gpa of 3.48 tying them at 121st among the teams. This ranked them in the top 13% of all of the 934 teams.

The women’s golf team, coached by Angela Tejral Witt finished the year with a 3.17 team gpa while the softball team completed the year with a 3.15 gpa and was coached by Mark Mathews.  The Bobcat football team finished with a team gpa of 3.0 and was coached by Terry Clark.  PSC Athletic Director Steve Schneider was pleased with the number of the scholar-teams honored. Top Ten Percent of Champions of Character  Recently, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released their Champions of Character Scorecard with the 2010-11 results showing how the association and its members are advancing characterdriven intercollegiate athletics. Among the top athletic programs in the NAIA listing was Peru State College (PSC), which tied for 18th out of 220 colleges and universities, which were recognized with the Champions of Character Five Star Award.  PSC President Dr. Dan Hanson was very pleased with the recent announcement. Dr. Hanson said, “The College is very proud of our coaches and student-athletes and their strong commitment to the Champions of Character program.” Athletic Director Steve Schneider echoed Dr. Hanson’s comments. Schneider added, “Our coaches and their studentathletes have supported this initiative. Through their actions, the values of the Champions of Character are being gained by our athletes

Peru State Student Wins the Prairie Fire Marathon  Sarah Williams’ (Hiawatha, Kan.) personal-best time in a five-kilometer race two weeks ago in Crete, Nebraska, earned her fifth place in a NAIA cross country meet. Another personal best on Sunday had her in a combination of joy and having nothing left to give.  Williams cut more than 20 minutes off her time in the Boston Marathon in April and won the Prairie Fire Wichita Marathon crossing the finish line in 3 hours, 3 minutes, 56 seconds. The

21-year-old distance runner at Peru State College who is running unattached this year as red-shirt for PSC, Williams was surprised that she won. She was the first woman out of 232 finishers and placed ninth overall out of 539 finishers.  “I had no idea,” Williams said. “I actually thought I’d run worse than I did at the Boston Marathon last April.” Williams trains with the cross country team in order to run unattached at some of the 5K races on weekends.

SID BROWN  The late Sid Brown was the next inductee and was represented by his wife, Nancy. While at Peru State, Brown played quarterback for the Bobcats and lettered all four years. In addition to his athleticism, were his and Nancy’s generous contributions to the College, in particular, to athletics over the years. In her acceptance

Nancy continued, “Sid played football just like he did everything in life, all heart. The memories he so cherished of years of playing football at Peru State College, football games and friendships, never dimmed. He was buried in his Cotty’s Peru State College football

sweatshirt with his signed too well.” He noted that football from the Grand Drexel Harvey did have a Marshal event (at the 2009 great game and later noted Homecoming Game). There is a football and #7 on the side of our tombstone. That Memories and is who Sid was. I can see the highlights were smile on his face and the tears abound for the over in his eyes about tonight.” In conclusion, Nancy thanked 170 in attendance... everyone who had a part in making Sid’s dream become a reality and finished with, that one of the stars on the “Go Bobcats!” team, Bob Buettgenbach  Nancy Brown still resides (inducted into the Hall of in Batavia, Ill. Coach McIntire – that is how they recruited me. They had to walk a long ways to get there. Mac (Coach McIntire) did a real good job of getting all those guys together.”  Rathe went on to talk about some of the individual players and how they got there and later to the 61-62 team. He noted that most of the team had arrived during the 58-59 season and they played jayvee together. They played the University of Nebraska Freshmen team and beat them as Mike Roach scored 30 points. Rathe added, “Jerry Bush, the coach at the University of Nebraska had said that Roach was not good enough to play for them, but I think he changed his mind after that game.” In concluding, Rathe talked about some of the individual players and then more about each of the years that they put together leading up to the ultimate successful 196162 season.

NATE BRADLEY  The leader of the only football national championship in 1990, Nate Bradley, was the next inductee. His father, Gwendel, accompanied Bradley for the weekend. Near the opening of his acceptance, Bradley said, “First thing I want to do … is to thank you for welcoming me home. This is the place that changed me. I came here in a turmoil in my life. (Bradley left Rutgers University to come here as they had wanted him to play defense, but he wanted to quarterback). Peru State extended their arms to me and gave me an opportunity. My dad always told me to not mess it up. He was always encouraging me to get my

President Hanson with Nate Bradley grades right and to graduate on time. I reminded him that it really was not costing him much. But, dad, thank you, I love you and thank you for all the encouragement you gave me.”  Bradley continued and noted he could not wait to get home to show his boys the plaque. He added some comments about some of the previous Hall of Fame members and thanked them for their congratulations and comments about his induction. In conclusion, Bradley asked Mick Haney, a former Bobcat standout quarterback during the 1980 and 1981 season who was inducted in 2004 into the Hall of Fame, to stand up. Before Bradley could say anything, Haney, who is known to not be shy, informed everyone that, “This guy broke every one of my records. It really makes me mad (not the exact words used),” which brought another roar from the crowd. When Bradley regained his composure, he stated, “What I really was going to say was thanks for loafing all those times,” to which Haney replied, “Tell you what, you were one helluva quarterback,” which, too brought a round of applause.  Bradley finished by saying,

“I think Peru State did it right. Our team was inducted in 2000 into the Hall of Fame.” He asked Matt Hug and Bobcat football coach Terry Clark to stand up. Bradley noted, “These were two of my teammates. You really created a family atmosphere. Matt and I were talking about me being at his house for one Thanksgiving out on a farm which was different for me coming from New York and growing up in New Jersey. Being on the farm was quite enlightening.” It reminded him of his first night here which Bradley talked about, “I was in my room, I heard this noise and wondered what the sound was, and I realized it was the pigs and cows right over the other side from my room. I said to myself, ‘Wow, what have I done.’”  Concluding Bradley noted he couldn’t go home as his dad told him to make it happen and he just recalled that there were so many people who made this family and championship happen. He looks forward to coming back again and bringing his boys back to see Peru State to see all of the changes after he left over 20 years ago. Bradley and his family lives in Rochester, N.Y., where he works as a senior federal

BRENDAN RAYBOURN  The final inductee for the evening was Brendan Raybourn, an outstanding Bobcat baseball player who graduated in 2000. Raybourn was inducted on his first time in front of the selection committee. Selection rules state that student-athletes must have graduated at least ten years prior to their induction.  Raybourn, the youngest of all of the inductees, was the shortest with his acceptance. He began with thanking PSC athletic director Steve Schneider. Raybourn said, “This summer he called me to let me know that I was going to be down here for this so it was the first I had heard about this. It was one of the best phone calls I had ever

playing and throwing to me, hitting me balls, so Dad, I want to thank you very much for that.” Raybourn continued, “Mom, I want to thank you for that one pitch you threw to me in the front yard. Sorry, I broke your finger,” which elicited a large groan and laughter from the crowd. In addition, Raybourn added she kind of helped him hit lefties. Raybourn went on to say, “I need to thank my brother, Loren. He was kind of my biggest fan as he was at all of my games growing up. It probably meant more to me for having you there watching me, than it did for you to be there, but I loved having you there. So, thank you.”  Raybourn added he wanted to thank his wife, Jill for being here with him.

Brendan Raybourn with President Hanson had the privilege of taking.” Following some additional thanks, Raybourn thanked his family. He noted, “I wouldn’t be here without my family. Mom and Dad, you were there supporting me in whatever I wanted to do, especially baseball. I have been doing this as long as I can remember. My dad coached me as long as I can remember as a little kid by

He said, “Baseball was something I always wanted to do since I was a little kid. When I finished playing, I really wasn’t sure what was going to happen after that, but I got married and I have three wonderful boys. And I learned that I love being a husband and a father more than I ever liked playing baseball,” another comment which brought a round of

applause from the crowd.  Raybourn finished with, “I just want to close by saying I always was kind of a city boy and I came down here and it took me a few years to get used to all of the small-town life here, but I just know my last two years here, I loved it and that there was no other place I would rather be. I got a great education, great friends, great times, everything I did here. I just want to thank everybody for being here and thank you for this honor.”  Raybourn currently lives with his family in Omaha and teaches math in the Gretna Public Schools where he is also the conditioning coach.  AD Schneider concluded the evening with comments and his now infamous saying of, “Today, like every day, is a great day to be a Bobcat.” . On Saturday, all of the Hall of Famers and many of their guests attended the football game that saw the Bobcats upset the Evangel University Crusaders 20-13. At halftime, each inductee was individually presented a certificate by President Hanson and the First Lady, Elaine Hanson.  Members of the 1961-62 team who were present and/ or represented included Ken Dostal (Gretna - formerly of Scribner); Bob Gibson (Omaha – formerly of Falls City); Jim Hall (Atlanta, Ga. – formerly of Omaha); Pat Hamm (Wood River, Ill.); Larry Rathe (Lincoln – formerly of Sterling), the late Bill Tynon (formerly of Peru) – represented by his daughter Nancy Tynon, Tom Yopp (Broomfield, Colo. formerly of East Alton, Ill.), the late Coach Jack McIntire – represented by daughter Karen Hamm, and the late Coach Jerry Stemper – represented by son Steve.

Remembering Peru State Consider Becoming “I’d never really thought about including Peru State in my will. Not until the topic came up at the National Alumni Association Board meeting last Homecoming.” C. Carlos Harrison, Shenandoah, Iowa, a 1951 PSC graduate and true-blue Bobcat, recently shared his plans for the creation of the Harrison Alumni Fund as part of his estate plans. Carlos hopes his bequest will help fund an alumni house or alumni programming by the PSC Foundation. “I’ve visited a number of other campuses,” Carlos explained, “and many have facilities and programs designed for alumni. I’d love to see that kind of opportunity at Peru State.” Carlos’s fond memories of Peru State College began his first day on campus in 1949. Carlos majored in education and spent many hours in the music department with Dr. Edith Greer and Mr. Darryl Manring. “They were great mentors,” Carlos shared, “They were the type of professors who students were comfortable approaching with a problem and C. Carlos Harrison would do their best to give solid advice.” Carlos’s favorite memory from his collegiate days was a band trip to Chadron for a football game. The Chadron students painted the bus red and the next morning the students had to buy gasoline to scrub the paint off! After graduating from Peru, Carlos received his Masters in Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In the mid-1950s … after a hitch in the United States Army … Carlos was back in Shenandoah as District Scout Executive with the Boy Scouts of America. While there, he was offered a position with Air Products and Chemicals Inc. Carlos accepted the position and was quickly moved to California where he spent the next 39 years in the airline industry. Carlos maintained his close ties with Peru State through the Northern California Alumni Club. On two different occasions he served as President of the “NorCal” group. He retired in 2000 from United Airlines and returned to Shenandoah to be near family and friends. Carlos’s gift to Peru State is in the form of a bequest … a simple addition to his will. The Harrison Alumni Fund details were worked out through a separate agreement with the Peru State College Foundation. According to Carlos, the whole process was very easy. “I met with my attorney and had the appropriate language added to my will. Then Todd and I worked out the plan for the Alumni Fund over a couple of emails and telephone calls.” (R. Todd Simpson, CFRE, is the Executive Director of the Peru State College Foundation.) Carlos’s gift plan is a great way to remember Peru State … and strengthen the College for the future! Thank you Carlos!

a Member of the 1867 Society

The 1867 Society recognizes and honors persons who have included Peru State College in their estate planning. These alumni and friends have made wonderfully thoughtful commitments to the College and their recognition as members of the 1867 Society encourages others to consider similar gift planning. Including Peru State in one’s estate plan is testimony that the College has been particularly appreciated by the donor and that he/she wants to help perpetuate the College’s good health and its service to future generations of students. The gift is typically accomplished through a bequest in a will; creation of a charitable trust; a charitable gift annuity; or a beneficiary designation in a life insurance policy or retirement account. While such gifts are often larger than a donor may have made previously, no minimum-size gift commitment is required for 1867 Society membership. Making such a planned gift will often generate tax benefits during one’s lifetime and/or at settlement of one’s estate. Anyone planning an estate-type gift to benefit Peru State College is encouraged to consult with his or her tax advisor as part of that process. Thanks to the generosity of many generations of alumni and friends of Peru State, the Peru State College Foundation is able to provide nearly $500,000 annually of financial assistance to Peru State students and to support a variety of programs and initiatives at the College. Interested? Ask if you would like to know more. Contact the PSC Foundation at 402-872-2304.

Creating a Charitable Gift Annuity - - - “What’s That?!”

Did you know that you can help Peru State through a “planned gift” that will pay you a regular and guaranteed income for life? A charitable gift annuity pays you regular and fixed payments at rates often higher than the return on low-earning securities

or CDs. If you are thinking about including the College in your estate plans, or just increasing your income from invested assets, a gift annuity with the Peru State College Foundation may be something you would want to consider. It can be

a good way to get the estate planning ball rolling, and for you to realize a direct financial benefit during your lifetime. A simple contract between you and the Peru State Foundation guarantees regular payments. The

greater your age, the higher the payout amount. And if you delay the start of payments for a year or more, the rate will be even higher. (This version is called a deferred gift annuity.) Also interesting is that there are a variety

of potential tax benefits associated with a charitable gift annuity, especially if you fund it with appreciated assets/securities. Interested? Ask if you would like to know more. Contact the PSC Foundation at 402-872-2304.

Brett Richards (’92) has been selected as the next superintendent for the South Sarpy School District. Victoria (McKinley) Garcia (‘90) and her 9 year old daughter, Calli Jo (Editor in Chief), have created a free online magazine, sponsored and printed by Gluten Intolerant Group (GIG) of North America. It is designed by kids, for kids and about kids living a gluten free diet because of celiac disease or gluten intolerance. The Garcia Family has lived the gluten-free lifestyle since 2004 when four of the children were diagnosed with the active disease and one with the gene (which means the disease could kick in at any time and cause serious damage to the child’s body). Victoria earned her MEd/Curriculum & Instruction in 2008. Victoria volunteers as a life coach and has also presented “Celiac Disease in the Classroom” to school staff to help them understand how to work within the student’s needs. Victoria is currently working on a unique sister website to the magazine.

Homecoming Tailgate to be Annual Event More than 1,300 students, staff, alumni and community members converged on the Campus of a Thousand Oaks in September to celebrate the college’s 91st Homecoming and second annual tailgate on the quad. A carnival-style atmosphere and beautiful weather greeted our guests, as did a campus green teeming with free food and games. The air was rich with the smell of grilled burgers, chili dogs, popcorn, snow cones, caramel apples and cotton candy. The food was a good match for the variety of activities in front of TJ majors, including a bounce house, dual-lane slide, obstacle course, bungee run, nine-hole miniature golf, Velcro wall, inflatable boxing, caricatures by renowned cartoonist and PSC alum Paul Fell, face painting, balloon animals and more. Peru State gear was liberally given away as prizes and the Hoyt Street Jazz Band provided lively music on the front steps of Jindra. President Hanson said, “The Homecoming Tailgate is an opportunity for us to celebrate the beginning of another successful year and to thank our alumni, friends and surrounding communities for their unwavering support of the institution and our students. The feedback we have gotten about the event is so positive that we plan to make it an annual tradition. I personally invite you to bring your family to campus, meet our students and staff, and have some fun!” This year’s Homecoming celebration has been set for Saturday, Sept. 29. As is tradition, the parade will begin at 10 a.m. downtown. Free food and games will be on the Quad from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Bobcat football team will round out the day’s activities when they take on Graceland University at 2 p.m. in the Oak Bowl.
