Annual Report 2010 2010 was a year of change and development for AOSpine Asia Pacific (AOSAP). Vengopal Menon passed the Chairperson baton to Bryan Ashman in May and new board members took up their respective positions in August. By December, there were four staffs on the AOSAP management team, we also moved to a new office with other AO specialty staff in June. We would like to thank all Board and Council officers for their contribution.

Dear colleagues,
AOSpine Structure
Welcome to the 2010 AOSpine Asia Pacific annual report. Last year was a particularly prosperous one for us, with exceptional growth in membership numbers, to the extent that our region is now the largest in the AOSpine community. It was also a year of expansion in our educational activities with increased number of courses and participants compared to 2009. As you will read later in the report, we successfully trialled a neurosurgically oriented course in China and Korea. At the end of 2010, the new AOSpine Curriculum was launched in Davos and it is reproduced in this report. The challenge for us in 2011 will be to disseminate and discuss the regional roll-out of the curriculum into our individual country course. This year we will also be launching a regional research project under the guidance of the Regional Research Committee lead by Richard Williams. So congratulations to all Asia Pacific members on last year’s achievements and I look forward to building on them in 2011. Finally my heartfelt thanks to the 2010 Regional office team of Andy Leung, Derek Lai and Patrick Wong whose tireless efforts underpinned our success.

2010 Board and Council Changeover
AOSAP STRUCTURE
2010 was the changeover-year for the AOSAP Board and some of the Council Members. The AOSAP office followed the requirement in the Template of Governance to organize online election for the new Board and Council Members. The 2010 election details are listed in table below. It started with the AOSpine China Council (AOSCN) changeover in February; they also set up several Member at Large positions in the Council to represent different regions in China. The China Council passed the decision to have full election for the coming term. The AOSAP Board online election started in the beginning of March, but as there were many candidates running for the Education (Ortho) and Education (Neuro) position, a second election was needed to determine the best candidate for the role. The new Board Members started their term of office in the beginning of August and there was a full Board meeting in September for the new and existing Board Members to exchange ideas. Brian Freeman was elected as the AOSpine Australia/New Zealand (AOSAU/NZ) Chairperson in June and he stepped into office in the beginning of August. YH Yau (Education (Ortho)), Ben Goss (Research) and Ashish Diwan (Spine Center and Fellowship) started their term as Council Members in December. For AOSpine East Asia (AOSEA), Chung Chek Wong was elected as Chairperson and Dino Samartzis as Research Officer in June; they both resumed their role in the beginning of August. For the remaining council members, they were elected in December and will join the AOSEA Council in March 2011. Looking forward to 2011, there will be election and Council changeover for AOSpine India (AOSIN) and AOSpine Korea (AOSKR).

General members who enter this relationship have the opportunity to progress their membership position and develop to the next status of DELEGATE. Delegate members are a sub grouping of members who • Achieved platinum level status • Fulfill a defined set of extra criteria, which may differ slightly by region • who are committed to give time and energy to serve on, or contribute to the services of boards, councils, committees, taskforces, etc for the benefit of the AOSpine community. A delegate is a critical step in advancing to become an AOSpine Officer. Only “Officers” involves in decisionmaking actions on behalf of the organization by being either elected to sit on a board, commission and council or nominated to be part of a committee, knowledge forum and taskforce.

With high quality audiovisual equipment, large lecture hall, and open area for workshop, the Yokohama Symposia was an excellent venue to host this course with 58 participants. Being next to the Tokyo Bay, the faculty and the participants enjoyed the beautiful sea view to during their coffee breaks. The course covered a wide variety of topics such as spinal deformities, lumbar degenerative, trauma, osteoporotic vertebral fracture, cervical degenerative and complications along with three practical exercises. The Spine and Wine session in the first evening was a great opportunity for case discussions in a cozy setting. The participants were split into four groups. The faculty shared a nice dinner on the second day to relax and exchange ideas. The course concluded with a grand discussion on day three where participants submitted their questions in advance to speed up the flow of communications.

AOSpine Principles and AOSpine Curriculum Implementation
The AOSpine curriculum delivers educational content based on competencies, learning outcomes, and your needs, using the most appropriate learning methods and techniques.
Educational Plan
The AOSpine Principles The four principles are considered as the foundation for proper spine patient management and underpin the design and delivery of the curriculum: Stability—Alignment—Biology—Function.
How does the AOSpine Curriculum work? Faculty
Competencies
Resources

Assessment
Stability Stabilization to achieve a specific therapeutic outcome
Alignment Balancing the spine in three dimensions
Biology Etiology, pathogenesis, neural protection, and tissue healing
Our competency-based approach aligns four components to ensure we address your needs: • • • •
Educational plan—defines all learning activities Faculty—trained to deliver all content using our framework Resources—learning materials developed in response to your needs Assessment—identify your needs and track your progress
Function Preservation and restoration of function to prevent disability
Faculty development The AOSpine Curriculum AOSpine offers a wide range of educational programs for continuous professional development of spine care specialists. Your AOSpine Curriculum is a framework that offers a foundation for continuing development in diverse practice settings. The curriculum is based on the competencies that enable spine surgeons to perform effectively across six areas of pathology in their practice setting and to meet the standards of the profession.
The ultimate goal of faculty development is to improve the AOSpine Education quality with a series of action, by raising the standard and teaching skills of faculty, participants will be benefited from their expertise and improve the clinical skill. The secondary function is to provide a clear path to AOSpine member on how to become faculty, Chairperson and then Education Director. AOSpine Asia Pacific organized two Faculty Training Course and two Tips for Course Chairperson Training Course in 2010. Since the first Tips for Education Director Training course in the end of 2009, there are now six Education Directors in Asia Pacific.

AOSpine Chinese Manual
2010 was a remarkable year for Asia Pacific in terms of Membership; we achieved 40% growth from January to December 2011 and finished strong with 1,428 members. The Neurosurgeon Engagement program in Beijing and Seoul also brought in a new membership segment.
Thanks to Zhongqiang Chen, Wen Yuan and their team to translate AOSpine Manua into Chinese. It has been published in professional bookstore in China and through AOSpine education events. Like the original manual, there are 2 volumes in the Chinese AOSpine manual. It was first launched at the AOSpine Symposium in Shanghai and over 15 sets of manual were sold the same day. China Council plans to supplement to them with the 3rd Volume in 2011, which is a collection of China surgery cases with highly referencing value to spine surgeons.

USB Thumb Drive
Annual Scientific Meeting of the Spine Society of Australia
Served as an pocket-sized electronic tool for members to understand the history and structure of the AOSpine, the USB thumb drive disseminates much updated information in a comprehensive way including membership and fellowship guideline, sample journals, Global Spine Congress reports and Davos video lectures. A strong association will be shaped between members and AOSpine in a dynamic and interactive environment by such means.
The 21st Annual Scientific Meeting of the Spine Society of Australia was held in Christchurch, New Zealand from April 9 to 11, 2010. This was the first time for AOSpine to present at a Spine conference in New Zealand; the AOSAP office arranged a booth to promote the AOSpine philosophy to the local surgeons. Thanks to the suggestion by Paul Licina (AOSAU/NZ Council officer) to hire a barista and coffee cart, our booth turned out to be quite a meeting point for the surgeons, but that is just the beginning, we also have 30% discount on membership as an exclusive offer to the SSA participants, together with an iPod touch and a set of AOSpine manual as the lucky draw prize. This marketing strategy gave a boost to the AOSAU/NZ membership as there were 15 registrations (new and renewal) during SSA. The lucky draw took place on April 11 and we would like to congratulate Dr Adam Cho for winning the iPod touch and Ms Kathleen Adams was very happy to receive the AOSpine manual from Ms Laura Ewing, Research Coordinator of Paul Licina.
AOSpine Pins To commemorate the involvement and participation of all AOSAP members in the unique global spine community. AOSAP has specially produced a metallic pin for all members as a token of appreciation.
