a Contemporary Art gallery & cafe’ a new scheme to cater for private exhibitions & art events in Port Elizabeth. The brief called for the design of a modern art gallery that is contemporary in form but acknowledges its context.
2
The model was built with the aid of scale drawings & photo references. Emphasis was placed on creating a simple formal representation of the building.
1
2 cubist volumes were created, separated by a central link which forms the entrance & service block respectively. A neutral backdrop creates a blank canvas in which the exhibits can be housed with the gallery space extended into displays in the off street cafe’. Natural daylighting maximised through strip roof-lights to the external walls.
2
a Tropical Forest Hiking Shelter, set within a fictitious rainforest region the brief called for the design of a simple hiking shelter which would serve as a stop over point.
a Desert Hiking shelter, set within a fictitious arid desert region The brief called for the design of a simple hiking shelter which would serve as a stop over point.
A simple timber structure, which could be built using timber sourced locally, forms a platform raised off the forest floor. The open structure allow breezes to pass through unrestricted.
Large solid walls & roof act as thermal mass, heating up during the day, keeping the interior cool & releasing embodied heat back into the interior at night. Bastion walls provide shelter from harsh desert winds.

Rainwater salvaged from the large mono pitch roof canopy & treated.

a Sailboats interior, devised as an exercise to design within very tight parameters, the brief called for the design of an interior sailboat fit-out.
1
The schemes show habitable forms, one in which a monumental, spatially dominant & set apart concrete form is created. The contrasting scheme shows an ephemeral, articulated & dynamic composition.

a Sacred space, a Public space situated within the historic core of the Port Elizabeth. The brief called for a municipally funded ‘Serene city space’ that is ecumenical, accommodating all & offending none.
2
working within the confines of given detail drawings of the shell, the ships hull was built using fins taken off the layout drawings & formed in negative. The design of the interior was produced as an exercise in rational construction, with the overall structural hull of the boat taking precedence throughout.
1
The final proposal featured an entrance portal which visitors stepped through into a tree lined entrance garden, the path ending at a fountain. In which a pause is taken before entering the chapel The Minimal chapel flanking the pathway forms an enclosed place of prayer / meditation that is capable of accommodating 100 people.
2
Parliment Street regeneration, a busy feeder road within the city The brief called for semi pedestrianisation of the road, cafes situated along the road have external seating which is dangerously close to the roadside.
Form, Sense, States a project to illustrate the formal relatioship between differing architectural approaches, namely through the use of materials (both built form & in relation to its context)
3
4
The brief called for the creation of forms which illustrate how specific psychological responses can be drawn from varying expressions using a set of given parts.
The scheme calls for the roadway to be narrowed, decreasing motorists speed, off street parking nodes were introduced to limit the amount of vehicles in the road. Bollards & street furniture were introduced to provide a threshold between road , walkway & cafe seating. This allowed for the introduction of a more human scale to the road.

Street facade & open walkway
Analysis of victorian fronting
living out to the square & creating public access
a Considered addition seeks to mimic the massing & proportions of the existing front to the ‘lady hamilton’. The street facade looks to acknowledge the vertical divisions found through fenestration of the existing building. Background elements are offset from the streetfront, with a visual taper to any edges along the eastern edge to aknowledge the church & public throughfare to the eastern edge.
a Play on victorian ‘fronting’ found throughout the area. The neighbouring buildings form clustered groups with back to front (southern) orientations, emphasis is drawn to the decorative & ornate street facades. Simple archetypal structures with added decoration, mostly cast iron / corrugated iron & timber , likely sourced from ‘pattern’ books of the era, are used extensively.
3rd year design submission, an advertising agency - 2007
Massing & response
Connecting to the square the building mass is pulled away from the existing wall to the church yard, opening up the park to pedestrians along the edge of the building . Living out to the square to the north, a public courtyard is definined. The spatial Diagram allows for a monolithic front to the south, enforcing the tight object-like street line of the neighbouring buildings.
a Proposed advertising agency Having bought the property the owner & her family will live in the existing building. The new addition will accommodate the working needs of her agency & a public coffee bar & cafe that her husband runs.
i
Key client values: It is imperative that he new building should; provide a dynamic, functional & inspiring work environment in which clients can be comfortably entertained & impressed. Be environmentally friendly, resource & energy efficient & utilize passive modes of environmental control. Be contemporary whereby it is a reflection of the agency, but should acknowledge & reinforce its context.

An intervention was proposed within the NMMU campus, an organisation of faculties governed by hierarchical relevance & functional/symbolic value. Due to the linear syntax of the arrangement, adversely configured to allow for less chance of social interaction, against which the main movement channels are set along their lengths. The scheme allows for a cross program of mixed uses to these spaces & provides a backdrop for potential interaction between various users.
Developing a removable structural shell the ephemeral nature of the scheme utilizing a lightweight geodesic derived barrel frame, with raised glazing to the external face. variable shading to the interior is provided by the use of adjustable louvres, providing dappled light to the interior volume, providing texture reminiscent of the shading provided by a tree canopy.
Contrasting against the regular geometry of the university buildings, the scheme looks to incorporate a more organic form into the cubist environment, using a metaphor of a widely found informal meeting place under the shelter of a tree canopy, a light unfamiliar element is developed, emphasising the ephemeral & ‘public’ nature of the intervention.
Tapping into the main circulation route along the length of the campus, the bridge is set against the backdrop of concrete auditorium buildings, with views to the main building along its length. The intervention looks to provide an important link between students from various faculties using the route to the main vehicular pick up/drop off area.

Using the library as a backdrop
Use of plinth & foreground elements
Sectional & plan arrangement
A modern portal framework forms the structural system for the foreground element, held in sharp contrast to the raw untreated plinth, providing a unique sense of identity within the square. The proportions of the ‘crown’ are considered, although the south elevation of the library is an obvious infill in contrast to the ornate fronting, the scheme looks to use the libraries animated roofscape as an honest backdrop.
Conceived as a landscaped terrace or platform acting as the background for the private functions with the ‘crown’ or foreground intervention as the visible public artefact to the square, the stepped plinth incorporates the slope of the site, effectively seen as an extension of the pavement, promoting public passage & use, with the cafe’/info centre situated on the lower level spilling out onto the sheltered courtyard.
The building frames the square pulled away from the library wall to emphasise the importance of the library as a civic jewel, this allows for a sheltered courtyard to be created. Splitting the levels allows for a variety of programme & events, with the lower levels incorporating all public functions, the upper levels for more select functions while lower ground levels can be used to house the private library facilities.
an Information Centre & library ext. Situated on the central market square of Port Elizabeth, the brief called for an information centre incorporating both public recreational & information facilities & those of a library extension to house the libraries secure ‘Afrikaaner’ archives.

3rd year design submission, an info centre / library extension - 2007
Scale & articulation
Design challenges were evident in the location of the site, with the new building effectively ‘boardering’’ the square. Emphasis was not only given to how the buildings public face should present itself appropriately but also to how the private library extension should be housed. I sought to frame the square, incorporating the natural slope of the site as well as the library & its animated roofscape as a backdrop to the information centre & public space.
