The project aims to revitalize urban space of a central park in Volos by combining the two principle spaces of exchange the market Hall and the space of social Assembly. (Visible in our current modern society and traceable through history rendered by the Greek Agora). The Economy of Exchange was exclusively studied,mapped and researched to extract the "Market Organizational principles" and deploy them into Architectural organizational principles. An in depth study were made to understand and map the corner conditions in the Klein Market Halle and its rule in organization, which later translated into Surface Experiments acting as the design apparatus for Volos Project.

A competition proposal for the London Olympics Information Pavilion, done as part as a continuum to a research conducted during the masters course at Staedelschule. An in-depth study was done on the very notion of "Information". Two kinds of information categories where constructed - the dynamic and the static information. The kind,type and the amount of the information affected and effected on the flow and the organization of people within the pavilion.

The Design was approached by questioning what kind of information thepavilion will offer.Information was then categorized into two: Static Information, and Dynamic Information. STATIC INFORMATION is the Detailed , Fixed type of Information. It is not influencedby time. Ex: What Is London? What is Olympics? Team Backgrounds? Where Dynamic is the information typology where it is Constantly updated, highly affected by time. E.g.: Teams medals, Schedules etc.

The horizontal distortion of flow was exclusively controlled by the site constraints from the fountains and the nearby stairs. While the vertical distortion is being controlled and proportional to the information intensity each zone the pavilion will exhibit. Thus the greater the amount of information available to users , the more the flow being distorted, slowing, diverging and allowing more time for visitors to experience the information in question.

FROM INFORMATION TO FLOW The pavilion differentiate the flow within into four degrees responding to the type of information "Type" the flow offers. The Relation between what is static and what is dynamic is not absolute, but a threshold. For example, What is Olympics, as a static information, changes by long term history, hence, have a degree of Dynamism.

FIBERS AS : The pavilion's geometry is stripped down into fibers like structure making it the main architectural element and design apparatus to perform different operations from circulation to furniture.

CIRCULATION Fibers forming the main circulatory routes and corridors within the pavilion.

INFORMATION DISPLAY Some elements twist into the vertical, forming the vertical display for digital information projection.

FURNITURE Fibers falling from the upper structure hanging down forming the necessary furniture from tables to seating elements for cafes.

STRUCTURE Side fibers are made of stiffer material gaining structural capacities to hold the different levels and stiffen the whole pavilion together.

Pharaoh Therm and Therapy Pharaoh Therm and Therapy , Bachelors Graduation project. Site was selected in Sinai Egypt. The site is exclusively utilised as touristic therapeutic treatment as a result of its richness with natural hot springs and natural sauna like caves.

LOCATION

WHAT IS HAMMAM? Misits temperature is 27 degrees Celsius, the water flows directly from the mountain forming a natural lake with 100 meters length along the sea shore. The mountain above contains a stone tunnel used a natural hot sauna because the hot water springs from inside the mountain. Scientific research proved the importance of the water in treating some diseases such as rheumatism and rheumatoid, kidney diseases, lung inflammation, skin diseases.

Alexandria Greek Floating Museum “When ever you look there must be something to be seen” Sliding Tectonic surfaces , a set of layers is created which fluctuates with the axes of the urban fabric and main axis. This interns, let to the constantly changing Façades as one drives through the harbour.

Urbanely, the museum was positioned and oriented according to intense study of the urban context, under water sunken treasures, and the museum surface orientation in accordance with opposing axis and landmarks.

Surfaces surfing over the surfaces of the water creating spaces with different and differentiated proximities to the water surface. Some spaces are loselly defined by the very water edge.

Structurally , it has been broken down into two main systems, A) Grid shell structure of the oscillating Surfaces B) steal structure for the slabs.

Three initial oscillating wave layers were deployed, arranged according to precise study of contextual elements such as the near by Alexandria library and views from major street axes. Such surface configuration rendered by stacking and intersections, offers a diversity of spatial enclosures.

Sky- Skyline | Video Installation

An Art / Architecture installation for Rungang Exhibition , Staedelschule , Frankfurt am Main , Germany. The Installation acts as a radical reflection to our current light pollution problem. In short, we hardly do see a night sky anymore , precisely because of the glare caused by the dense architecture and the city. The Know-how : The work was done by processing , Java based scripting compiler; a Jpeg of Frankfurt skyline was used , extracting the brightness values of every pixel, in turns, those values are used to feed a grid of equally spaced attractors. A dense particle system is being influenced by the attractor grid, densefy and converges in an abstract manner following the initial feeded Frankfurt skyline.

Controlled Disorientation The proposal for ‘Academic Interchange’ focuses on the art of getting lost. Undetermined meetings, topics and participants are being encouraged and suggested thanks to the un-oriented, undefined path of a defined group of visitors. Visitors from different backgrounds, disciplines, randomly meet in random incubators, enhancing the equal opportunity and differentiation of the engaged discussions. The proposed architecture offers full control of circulation, way findings, yet does not orient. Architecture can and should offer multiple Varity of differentiated choices where users can freely and democratically choose their own path through. Getting lost is the natural reaction for the offered choices of finite ‘if not’ infinite paths and spaces. Instead of forcing users to find their way with the help of the conventional architectural elements of atriums and corridors, Architecture forces users to “GET LOST”. The building proposed allows people to escape tense and stress of getting lost. On the contrary, invites them to celebrate such experience, by assuring a degree if not a full degree of control to their targets. During such process of getting lost, the users will encounter variety of spatial experiences.

SINGLE VS. PARALLEL UNIVERSE The Architecture no longer operates as a single building , rather, a series of buildings, outdoor activities, inner gardens, pathways and routs, all forming a city within a building . The city is equipped with a High Dense Network of Paths, users can go through any of them, experience getting lost, hence, discover new spaces within the building. However, The getting lost experience is completely controlled . It’s like the old proverb “all ways lead’s to Rome”. Hence, a user can select the desired path, yet, architecture eventually guarantees his flow.

arch + lab was commissioned by the Austrian exhibition construction company Typico to automate the 3D data generation of the Opel stand at the IAA 2011 . Participated in the production of the 3d data required for digital fabrication through rhino.scrip.

Beijing Science Center |Strategies for Geometrical complexity | China

KSP J端rgen Engel Architekten invited me to participate in the design development phase of the Beijing Science Center project , were many design solutions were required to solve its geometrical complexities . The project consists of a floating Cloud. A multi curvature object, starting from a square perimeter , into a central vortex. And a lower orthogonal podium. The challenge was with the production and solving both grids simultaneously , the orthogonal and the diagram of the upper cloud.

Facades

A facade solution was developed parametrically,designed from 3 pieces , the width of the glass in between varies in response to the program behind, hence the amount of light required.


Columns & Grid

The precise design of the multi- curvature form with its inner vortex grid was generated, smooth transition from different topologies was essential , from the outer square perimeter to the inner vortex.

The Podium columns however , were arranged in an orthogonal grid. A solution and a design for how the columns meets the grid was required. Computational tools were applied to be able to find the closest distance between the column and its respective point of grid intersection in the upper form.

International Congress Center |Transfer to : Berlin Central Library

KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten proposed the transformation of The International Congress Center in Berlin, one of the largest convention centers in the world “ A 313 meters long, 89 meters wide designed by Ralf Schüler (1930-2011)” into Berlin Central public Library. The proposal maximises the use of the existing structure, emphasising its structural and contextual presence and introducing a very fragile, lose, column free, urban reading space within.
