Embrace and celebrate the glorious colours of autumn by rejuvenating your seasonal wardrobe, says Nicholas Alderton

E

ver the optimist, I always enjoy my autumns; the golden stubble in the fields, the gently turning colours of the trees and the chilly morning hoar frosts remind me to dig out my cold weather corduroys and moleskins, cosy pullovers and tweeds. At this time of year a chap often turns to the trusty autumnal colours; the greens, tans and browns. But I say, liven things up with a rakish rust, a cheeky plaid or a colourful corn yellow. So, as the temperature dips it is time for you to dip into your wardrobe and consider replacing that much loved but threadbare jacket, those moth-eaten jumpers and well worn trousers with something new to breathe life and colour into your autumn outfits. Another pleasant way to improve both your mood and your look is to treat yourself to a tasteful accessory or two such as a stylish titfer, snug scarf or a magnificent waistcoat. It is increasingly rare to find an outfitter with a complete gentlemen’s range but Peter Christian ticks all the boxes with its well-made and well-priced selection. Here are my top 10 pieces from this year’s autumn offering.

It’s time to do away with the drab and dowdy in your wardrobe. Splash a dash of the bright and bold to reflect the colourful inner you, says Nicholas Alderton

J

ust what is it that makes our male style icons so cool, so appealing? The clothes they look so good in are not beyond our reach — all they have done is to choose the right garments for the moment. More often than not their outfits are not bought from a top-end fashion designer or a bespoke tailor, but mostly purchased off the peg, and that means that they are also available to you. Every day I see men struggling to take control of their appearance. Many grew up in a time when it was considered effete to pay too much attention to expressing their personality through clothing and they have lost the confidence to nail their colours to the mast. Some rely on their partner to make the decisions for them and some simply repeat a look that they decided on years ago. But dressing with effortless ease really does not require a lot of effort. You simply need to develop an eye — and all that means is making a mental note when you see a hat, a shirt or a combination that takes your fancy and then taking a little time to seek out that look for yourself. What you wear says a lot about you. So if your outfits are not expressing the real you, now is the time to start experimenting and to give the world a glimpse of the real man inside. You will feel all the better for it, I guarantee.

Summer travel means that we can face dramatic temperature changes within hours. Nicholas Alderton guides the well-prepared gent in packing for all climes A Pythonesque handkerchief on the head and rolledup shirtsleeves might have passed as a gent’s holiday wardrobe not all that long ago. Now, of course, our horizons have broadened and, as well as taking more pride in our appearance, the world has become a smaller place. Smart global travel necessitates lighter weights and easy care. Some have holiday packing down to a fine art, but many of us know the perils of packing too much (especially with airline weight restrictions) or too little – when holidaying in these isles and the mercury unexpectedly drops. There are also formalities to be observed: will the hotel have a dress code in the evenings? Will shorts be acceptable at lunch? My experience tells me that a half-lined cotton jacket comes top of the list of essentials. Light and breathable, with plenty of practical pockets, it folds down neatly and at the flick of a silk pocket square can be smart enough for formal occasions. Linen – in shirts, trousers or suits – is one of those rare fabrics that can look elegant even when slightly crumpled, keeping you cool when all around you are losing theirs. I always take a hat: not only does it cut an extra dash, but it keeps the midday sun off the gentleman traveller’s head and can act as an emergency bucket when you reach that oasis. Use my list of travel must-haves from gentlemen’s outfitters Peter Christian to take the stress out of packing your bags. Order promptly, pack in advance and reward yourself with a Club Class G&T…

British menswear is stuffy, dull and boring? Not a bit of it, says Nicholas Alderton

O

ur men’s outfitting is considered, tailored and occasionally may be eccentric, but we don’t like to give the impression that we spend undue time getting dressed. We British men like to wear the best with an air of insouciance — but this has not always been the case. When you consider what a popinjay the British male was throughout the 18th century, a romantic period of frock coats, tight breeches and high-tied cravats, it is perhaps surprising that men’s style today is so understated. Back then a man had no reservations about ostentatious displays of wealth by sporting fabulous coloured silks, brocades and even a powdered wig. At the beginning of the 19th century, Beau Brummell, an arbiter of fashion and a close friend of the Prince Regent, established a new mode of dress for men: a simplified form of tailcoat, linen shirts and full-length pantaloons that replaced knee breeches and stockings. His favouring of full-length trousers began a silhouette in men’s tailoring that endures to the present day. By the Twenties, returning soldiers rejected the stiff Victorian garb of their fathers. Fabric was something of a luxury but the Prince of Wales, a snappy dresser by any man’s standards, combined traditional British tartans and tweeds with spots and stripes, making him a style ambassador for the British textile and manufacturing industries. Apart from the Prince’s extravagance, men in general considered clothing an effeminate area of interest and suits were typically subdued and neutral in colour. It was this period that largely set the tone for the rest of the 20th century. We still like to dress with an air of understatement but I believe I detect a change. Nowadays the children of the Sixties are willing to reject the formality of the tie and embrace the colour and rich fabrics that we have so long denied ourselves. And all I can say to this is… far out.

Of course gentlemanly discretion, forever to the fore, dictates that we leave much to the imagination of the reader. What we can reveal in absolute confidence and with total certainty is that once you’ve worn a well-made nightshirt, you’ll never see the other options in the same way. Peter Christian’s supremely comfortable and elegant version is a classic nice-and-nautical design. It features smart white piping, Peter Pan collar and matching pocket. The quality is as good as you would find in the hallowed shirtage salons of Jermyn Street. Available in Blue and Pink in sizes S-3XL. Order (MN15) for £30 or two for £50. Visit peterchristian. co.uk/sns or phone 01273 493393 and quote DT240.

Spring has sprung and stylish gents need to refresh their wardrobes. Nicholas Alderton admires classics with a dash of eccentricity in the detail

M

en are hopeless at throwing away old clothing; long after their “bin by” dates they still doggedly reach for the same old frayed shirt, limp jacket or tired trousers – to wear them “just one more time”. After a long, wet winter, now is the moment to refresh your wardrobe with the odd classic piece and some savvy styling. Time to add a dash of colour to the ankle with a well-chosen sock, splash out on a crisp new shirt or a stylish jacket that turns a head or two in your direction rather than simply covering you up. There are always exceptions but men as a rule have to be bullied into shopping for themselves, and who can blame them? Gone are those sanctums of manhood, the gentlemen’s outfitters. Those hallowed places where you could retire from the hustle and bustle and be skilfully guided into making clothing choices to suit your personality, rather than being forced to take what’s on offer by a pimply assistant with trousers heading obscenely south. So where does one go these days to find comfortable classic clothing that doesn’t cost the earth? Well, the good news is that there is a gentlemen’s outfitters to hand, it doesn’t cost the earth and its range is comfortably classic while retaining enough eccentric detail to set you apart from the high street herd. Here’s my selection from the Peter Christian spring collection. It ranges from classics like the Harrington jacket to a cheeky tweed baseball cap. It’s time to sharpen up. Not only will you feel the difference, you might even get some appreciative glances from your nearest and dearest. Now wouldn’t that be nice?

British style, Hollywood cool Superstars Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen and Elvis Presley all loved their Harrington jackets. This casual summer jacket has hardly changed since it was first introduced in 1938, proving that style never goes out of fashion. Here are all the features that you would expect from this design classic, including the distinctive two-button wind collar (worn up or down), a yoked back and a comfortable ribbed waistband and cuff. The lively plaid lining adds a splash of dash when unzipped. Choose from sand, indigo or chestnut. Sizes S-4XL. I don’t know who came up with this idea but I really like it. A traditional wool tweed has been stylishly fused with the modern world in this tweed baseball cap.
