Our Collecting Guide & Guarantee
Peter owns every photograph that is offered for sale, and guarantees to buy back any print, at any time, for at least the price that was paid. In forty years of buying and selling photographs this unique offer has been decisive for a great many collectors, whether it is their first or their fiftieth purchase.
By far the most frequent use of the guarantee has been to upgrade or trade for a different or more significant piece as financial circumstances and wall space allow. It has been reassuring for so many buyers to know that their purchase is liquid - you need never worry about trying to re-sell your acquisitions in future - Peter has purchased each and every image personally, so will always be happy to see them return.
“My collecting mantra is very simple: always be open and receptive, and only collect something that moves you or changes you in some way.”“Bettina’ , 1953 by Jean-Philippe Charbonnier (French, 1921-2004) Gelatin Silver Print. Signed on verso in pencil, ed.# 19/50 16 x 20 inches
Advice & Education
“Photography, for me, has deep meaning and passion. It has educated me. I’ve learned so many things through images that otherwise I may not have encountered.”
We focus on appreciation and connoisseurship at every level of collecting. We are always happy to explain the difference between vintage prints, editioned prints, printed later, and the many great photojournalists of the 21st Century who didn’t edition their prints - and what that means in terms of their position and value in the market.
We regularly explore by process, including 20th and 21st century gelatin silver prints, 19th Century albumen and hand-coloured prints, and the most permanent and most beautiful platinum/palladium prints made from the early 20th Century through to contemporary practitioners.

“Collecting is like reading a great novel; you are one person before and one person after. That’s the litmus test on whether or not you should acquire an image. Does it haunt you? Go on your own journey of self-discovery. Open your eyes and say yes to other people, other cultures - we are all connected.”
We use the Power of Photography archive to explore genres, themes and historical movements, whilst learning about specific photographers, techniques and process, as well as pricing and market context. Throughout we ask not only ‘What is the story?’ but more important perhaps ‘What is your story?”
