Assignment title: Animation theories

Assignment Brief Digital Wonders (DW) is a small Cardiff based business which specialises in creating flash-

based animations and

websites, their customers include a number of F.E. Colleges in the area. Coleg Glan Hafren has expressed interest in DW carrying out some future contract work for them. As a marketing exercise the company has agreed to set up a display stand containing educational and informative materials at the science fair that the college is organising. The fair is aimed at students in year 9 of secondary schools and is to educate learners about theories behind popular entertainment media and most importantly, to entertain. You have recently been appointed as a web developer and animator at DW , and have been asked to create a number of illustrated information leaflets which will be made available to visitors of the fair. These leaflets will contain information on the following subjects: 1– The basics and origins of animation. 2– The persistence of vision 3– Traditional animation Techniques 4– Three different software packages used in animation. 5– Comparing two different computer animation file formats

Work to be submitted NOTE: All work submitted must be in your own words. Produce a series of leaflets used for information purposes, which should be informative, illustrated and must follow a theme. The leaflets should be doublesided and designed to be folded if required. They should be appropriate for the target audience and be clear and concise, however they are also promotional material for the company.

Task 1 (P1 part): Produce a leaflet describing the historical origins of animation, including examples of early animations and associated display machinery (100 words). Task 2 (P1 part): Produce a leaflet detailing of how the eye-brain combination works to „produce‟ the appearance of continuous motion including a diagram (or diagrams) of the parts of the visual system that is involved in this process (100 words). Task 3 (P1 part): Create a leaflet where you explain at least two different techniques employed to create non-computer based or “traditional” animations, providing examples of each (100 words). Task 4 (P2): Produce an explanatory leaflet explaining the features and functions of three different commercially available animation packages. For example you might look into the most commonly available cross platform (PC & Mac) package and use it as your first example. Another example could be a professional animation package that films studios might use (200 words). Task 5 (M1): Create a leaflet to explain at least two different animation file types and formats available, comparing the features and functions of each of them This leaflet contains a high level of detail in order to provide a good comparison of the two file formats. A good starting point could be to compare an animated gif with a vector drawn animation (250 words). Page 4
