W11 – Shipper Tech Next: Heavyweight Delivery Using “Moneyball” Analytics Wednesday, February 7 • 2:10pm–3:20pm • Tradeshow Floor, Main Stage • Regular $65

BuildDirect is an eCommerce retailer that recognized the need to re-configure its national warehousing and delivery network to ensure fast home delivery of building material to DIY buyers. With over 150,000 heavyweight SKUs, it was not realistic to take an Amazon approach, with warehouses throughout the country. So, using “moneyball” principles, the company worked backward using their predictive analytics. They analyzed exactly what products were being viewed – pre purchase insights – in what regions of the country to determine the optimal warehouse locations, what products to store in each location, and even the material handling equipment to deploy in each spot. This presentation will discuss how to translate data into distribution strategy and how to set up a complex home delivery network for heavyweight products. Wednesday, February 7 • 2:10pm–3:20pm • VCC Level 1 • Regular $65

The transportation sector has been transformed over the past decade as technological solutions seek to address complex issues. Steadily, although with little obvious interaction, the prospect of autonomous trucking, autonomous shipping, and autonomous aviation moves closer. Has this brought the autonomous supply chain any nearer? What lessons can each sector teach for mutual benefit? Would the concept behind driverless truck platoons work elsewhere? Where are the areas of commonality, of divergence, and of overlap? Join experts from Lloyd’s List, Aviation Week, Fleet Owner, and Bulk Transporter as they explore the practical, safety, and ethical dimensions of the autonomous supply chain, and ask whether it’s Pie in the Sky or the Road of Revolution.

SHOW FLOOR FEATURES CLC CAFÉ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7 W13 – Canada-U.S. Customs: Ready For Borderless Trade? Wednesday, February 7 • 2:10pm–3:20pm • VCC Level 1 • Regular $65

The central question posed by this forward-looking session regarding borderless trade becoming reality can, at least initially, be answered in several ways, including the facts that: Canada and the United States share the longest land border with relatively seamless surface transport services transiting through; the two nations have similar if not the same types of regulatory agencies: Canada Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada are the equivalent to the U.S. FDA, while Canada Border Services Agency is equivalent to U.S. Customs and Border Protection; there has been mutual cooperation in various trade related areas, including duty-free mechanisms; both countries cooperate in a variety of ways regarding border security. Don’t miss this provocative topic with an engaging group of experts and find out if U.S.-Canada borderless trade is a possibility!

[MULTIMODAL SUMMIT]

Don’t miss this free seminar and learn from companies that utilize natural gas vehicles in their fleets today, in order to help them reduce their fuel costs, earn carbon credits and learn more about the overall benefits of adopting natural gas for your transportation needs. This panel discussion will be led by FortisBC Energy Inc., a natural gas and electricity distribution utility in British Columbia, Canada that serves approximately 1.1 million customers in 135 communities. FortisBC supports the growth of natural gas for the transportation market through financial incentives, fueling infrastructure development, and customer support. For example, FortisBC’s NGT program has provided financial incentives to convert over 750 heavy-duty vehicles and seven marine vessels and the construction and operation of 19 natural gas fueling stations in B.C.; resulting in emissions reductions of over 78,000 tonnes of CO2e annually, or the equivalent of removing 16,800 cars from the road per year.

Each and every logistical/transport mode attached to any given supply chain has an impact that can be felt both upstream and downstream. The focus of this discussion is the growing awareness that there is a supply chain ecosystem that forms the fabric surrounding each critical component, and how bringing these various entities together, however seemingly disparate some of them may seem, is becoming a needed best practice.

A diverse group of cargo owners discuss these issues, among others, with industry expert, Barry Horowitz.

This recent Wall Street Journal headline will form the discussion over the merits, and challenges to the concept coined by Brookings Institute in the article to be “shopping as infrastructure.” Former industrial/manufacturing-focused city neighborhoods are being repurposed into, among other things, distribution centers. Industry disruptor, Amazon, can offer its Prime service delivery within a one-to-two-hour window throughout Los Angeles County utilizing this distribution model, and is influencing some other companies to follow suit, raising the question of where the retail supply chain might be headed. Session Chair/Speaker: Chris Steele, COO & President North America, Investment Consulting Associates Speakers: Adie Tomer, The Brookings Institution, Metropolitan Policy Program Lance Trumble, Managing Director, Investments & Founding Partner, Tribal Partners, Inc.

W11 – Shipper Tech Next: Heavyweight Delivery Using “Moneyball” Analytics Wednesday, February 7 • 2:10pm–3:20pm • Tradeshow Floor, Main Stage • Regular $65 [SHIPPERS SUMMIT]

Presented by: Jim Hourigan, Chief Supply Chain Officer, BuildDirect Technologies
