The different methods for how to cook vegetables can help you enjoy a healthier, and tasty, lifestyle. Many people don't enjoy raw or plain vegetables, but frying them adds flavor and steaming them alters the texture, making otherwise hard to swallow foods tasteful. Boiling, making a puree, baking, or grilling vegetables are other ways to cook and serve up healthy garden bounty. Boiling When deciding how to cook vegetables it is important to know that boiling is often the first step in a multi step recipe. For example, to soften a butternut squash that is used to make soup you would first boil it. If you wanted to make mashed potatoes, you would first boil them so that they lose their hard texture and are easier to mash. Some vegetables, such as leafy greens like spinach, kale, and collard greens do not need to be boiled for any purpose other than to be eaten with a little seasoning. Steaming Steaming is not only a quick way to cook vegetables while preserving the vitamins and minerals they contain naturally, but you can steam frozen, fresh or canned vegetables such as corn, asparagus, carrots, string beans, collard greens, and broccoli. To steam these and other vegetables you can place the vegetables directly in a pot with about two inches of water or you can place them inside of a steaming basket. While they are simmering, be sure to occasionally check on the water to ensure it doesn't evaporate and remove the vegetables when they have reached the desired tenderness. You may save any of the remaining vegetable flavored water and use it to make other recipes or enjoy it as a soup with some pasta or crackers. Grilling During the summer, many people enjoy grilling corn on the cob with their hamburgers or adding some peppers and onions to their shish kabobs. To grill shish kabob veggies, simply pierce them with a wooden stick and lay them on the grill until they slightly char or until your meat is done, depending on the type of kabobs you are making. When grilling corn, it is best to wrap it in a piece of aluminum foil and flip it once or twice so that all the sides cook evenly. In addition to these vegetables, asparagus, eggplant, and portabella mushrooms are also good for grilling and should be left on the barbecue until they are tender. Another tasty treat is to slice zucchini or yellow squash lengthwise, butter and wrap in foil, then place on the grill next to your
steak or chicken. Ummm, yum! Baking Learning how to cook vegetables by baking them is quite easy. You can prepare the vegetables anyway you want by peeling, slicing, dicing, or mashing them and then adding some flavor. Sweet potatoes are one of the best vegetables to bake because you can make them at least three different ways. You can: Wrap them in tin foil and bake the whole potato Mash them, add some brown sugar, butter, and syrup, and put it all in a pie dish Cut them into French fries
Regular potatoes are just as good for baking, but leave the syrup and brown sugar out of the pie and replace them with cheese, chives, or sour cream. Frying Although not the healthiest way to eat okra, eggplant, or mushrooms, frying is one of the most flavorful ways to fix them, especially if you are just learning how to cook vegetables. Adding bread crumbs provides a soft crunchy texture and the oil moistens the food and locks in the heat. Aside from these methods on how to cook vegetables, you may also opt to stew, sautĂƒÂŠ, stir fry, roast, or microwave your healthy greens, purples, oranges, and yellows. If you want flavor, any of these methods are fine but if you care more about the health benefits, do some experimenting with the different cooking methods on your favorite vegetables.
