he recent emergence and increasing visibility of Islam as Italy’s second religion is an issue of undeniable importance. It has generated an intense and often polarized debate that has involved all the cultural, political and religious institutions of the country and some of its most vocal and controversial cultural figures. This study examines some of the most significant voices that have made themselves heard in defining Italy’s relationship with Islam and with the Islamic world, in a period of remarkable geopolitical and cultural upheaval from 9/11 to the Arab Spring. It looks in detail at the nature of the arguments that writers, journalists and intellectuals have adduced regarding Islam and at the connections and disjunctions between opposing positions. It examines how events such as military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq or the protests in Tahrir Square have been represented within Italy and it analyses the rhetorical framework within which the issue of the emergence of Islam as an internal actor within Italian civil society has been articulated.

Al ser una segunda edición, se infiere que el libro se ha estado preparando por más de 10 años y es el producto de extensas investigaciones en distintos campos lingüísticos como trasfondos históricos, lenguas en contacto, dialectología, etc. Sus numerosos y variados ejercicios proveen una herramienta idónea para que el estudiante alcance un alto nivel de proficiencia en el aprendizaje de nuestro idioma, su evolución a partir del período latino y también las influencias que ha recibido de otras lenguas. Nuestras bibliografías se han puesto al día y, finalmente, hay tres apéndices referentes a terminología lingüística, fonética y el sistema verbal latino. La primera edición (1999) del libro se ha empleado durante varios años, lo cual nos ha permitido ver sus virtudes tanto como sus defectos, por lo cual nos hemos concentrado en aquellas e intentado corregir estos últimos. El resultado es un producto maravilloso e innovador que ha probado ser muy efectivo para el grupo de alumnos al que va dirigido. Como nuestros propios estudiantes en el City College of New York han observado en diversas ocasiones: ¡Este curso es fenomenal y también es divertido! uesto volume persegue un triplice obiettivo. In primo luogo, si descrivono le proprietà distribuzionali, formali e funzionali dei costrutti di sintassi marcata dell’italiano dell’uso medio alla luce del loro impiego nella scrittura dei quotidiani online, un tipo di testo ancora poco noto. In secondo luogo, si identificano le proprietà che caratterizzano tali costrutti in un contesto europeo, vale a dire rispetto alle proprietà delle stesse (o analoghe) strutture in francese, spagnolo, tedesco e inglese. Questa scelta si giustifica con il fatto che il confronto interlinguistico permette di raggiungere il terzo obiettivo della presente ricerca: collocare l’italiano in un quadro tipologico romanzo e, più generalmente, europeo.

Les travaux réunis dans cet ouvrage veulent nous situer au cœur de la bibliothèque évoquée par Jorge Luis Borges dans ses Ficciones, dans l’Univers du Multiple dans l’Un, dans la grande archive de la littérature, pour la comprendre autrement, dans sa complexité et ses mouvements.

Histoire, Forme et Sens en Littérature La Belgique francophone Tome 1 : L’Engendrement (1815–1914)

a Belgique ? Une entité pas comme les autres en Europe. La révolution de 1830 accouche d’un pays moderne. Il ne correspond pas à l’équation Langue/ État/Nation. De cette particularité surgit, en un demi-siècle seulement, la première littérature francophone consciente d’elle-même et porteuse de chefs-d’œuvre dans lesquels s’inventent des Formes issues de cette Histoire singulière. Cette jeune littérature, qui émerge dès les années suivant la bataille de Waterloo et le Congrès de Vienne, se révèle très vite d’une grande richesse. et ouvrage collectif est une continuation d’une série d’études autour de la nouvelle en langue française publiées grâce à deux projets de recherche (Ministère de Science et Innovation Espagnol et Fondation «Séneca» de la Région de Murcia). L’approche des femmes qui ont écrit des nouvelles étant un aspect peu exploré et qui peut conduire à des découvertes intéressantes, les auteurs proposent cette fois-ci une monographie liée à l’idée de genre, avec l’objectif d’entreprendre de nouvelles pistes de recherche autour du récit court français. Les noms féminins n’abondent pas parmi les auteurs de nouvelles au XIXe siècle et leur production ne suppose qu’un très bas pourcentage de l’ensemble d’ouvrages répertoriés. À une époque où, dans le panorama scientifique et culturel, les figures phares sont des hommes, cette publication rattrape ces voix, ces sensibilités féminines oubliées, qui, de leur temps, se sont exprimées à travers la nouvelle. Bien que leur dévouement pour ce genre n’ait pas été le même et qu’elles aient été étiquetées par l’Histoire de la Littérature comme romancières, poétesses, dramaturges, journalistes ou tout simplement comme femmes de lettres, la réalité est que, de manière variable, beaucoup d’entre elles ont pratiqué le récit court. «In short, this volume is outstanding [ … ].» (Allan H. enito Pérez Galdós (1843–1920) is revered as Spain’s greatest nineteenth-century author. Writing in the realist tradition of Dickens, Zola and Balzac, he described life in Madrid with unequalled fidelity. In addition, he was unique among novelists of his time in his knowledge of medicine, revealed in his depictions of mental and physical disease. While critical analyses of his novels abound, this book is the first detailed study of the medicine that appears in his novels and newspaper articles. Galdós acquired his medical knowledge at a time of great changes: anaesthesia and antisepsis were developed, and the germs responsible for many human diseases identified. French medicine was especially influential, though increasing international exchange resulted in new ideas also being adopted from England, Germany and Italy. The author of this study analyses Galdós’s network of medical contacts, together with some of the sources available to them. Subjects such as epidemic disease, madness and children’s diseases are examined and the light they throw upon the medicine of the time is discussed. Die Literaturkritik hat immer wieder Vertreter des französischen Gegenwartsromans unter den Schlagworten Fin de Siècle und Dekadenz verortet. Die Autorin macht sich die systematische Aufarbeitung dieser meist oberflächlich gebliebenen Annäherung zur Aufgabe. Anhand einer kontrastiven diskursanalytischen Lektüre ausgewählter Romane von Michel Houellebecq, Maurice G. Dantec, J.-K. Huysmans und Octave Mirbeau zeigt sie, dass die Autoren in ihren Texten nicht nur vergleichbare Motive reproduzieren, sondern darüber hinaus eine charakteristische Subversionsstrategie verfolgen. Diese kann als paradoxe Rhetorik beschrieben werden und hat allen Romanen eine vergleichbar kontroverse Rezeption eingebracht.

The Birth of Belgian Surrealism Correspondance is the name of a Belgian Surrealist magazine published in 1924–1925 by Paul Nougé, Camille Goemans, and Marcel Lecomte. It is considered as seminal as Breton’s «Surrealist Manifesto» (1924). The texts were tart, obscure responses to the arcane literary debates of the time, in particular those underway in André Breton’s circle in Paris. Twenty-two issues of Correspondance were printed, in a modernist typeface on different color papers, and were distributed by mail to selected recipients. Unlike their Parisian associates, the Belgians made an explicit choice against the book as a host medium for literary and other experiments. Nougé, the chief theorist, and his colleagues remained suspicious throughout their careers not only of commercialized literature, but also of literature itself, which they saw as a means to political action, never a goal in itself. Although little recognized, Belgian Surrealists and Correspondance, their earliest manifestation, remain anticipatory and influential in modernist writing practice, especially for their ephemeral style of publishing (proto-mail art) and their intentional plagiarisms (precursor to Situationist détournement).

Cet ouvrage se propose d’évaluer l’imprégnation de l’Extrême-Orient dans la littérature française d’après-guerre par l’étude de l’esthétique poétique de trois écrivains emblématiques de leur génération: Henry Bauchau, Christian Dotremont et Yves Bonnefoy. On observera comment leurs œuvres relèvent d’un imaginaire sino-japonais syncrétique, qui leur permet d’interroger une certaine pratique de l’écriture afin de développer un usage performatif du langage. En particulier, cet imaginaire permet de saisir différents aspects du rayonnement de l’Extrême-Orient relatifs à la place du corps dans la création. Il invite à considérer l’impact des arts martiaux orientaux – progressivement intégrés dans la culture européenne – à l’égard des représentations et des valeurs associées à l’Asie. L’enjeu de cette étude est alors de comprendre la spécificité de ces œuvres majeures de la production poétique française contemporaine, marquées par cette culture éloignée, en regard de la pensée de la création comme geste et comme présence, telle qu’un art martial les met en œuvre en son propre lieu. L’analyse comparative et différentielle des trois œuvres fera apparaître, outre leur singularité, un horizon commun concernant une requalification des enjeux de l’écriture poétique pouvant ouvrir à un enrichissement de l’existence et, ainsi, à un mieux-être.

Cet ouvrage vise à cerner la place qu’occupe le corps féminin dans la production littéraire francophone des Amériques et des Caraïbes en invitant chacun(e) de ses auteur(e)s à s’interroger sur le topos que constitue la chair féminine dans l’écriture fictionnelle. Il est clair que le corps, pour les femmes, est bien un lieu à partir duquel écrire, mais en lui s’inscrivent aussi les enjeux d’une société, d’une culture et d’une poétique. L’écriture du corps féminin, qu’elle définisse la position d’un sujet-corps dans la narration ou l’ensemble de ses représentations textuelles, se transforme-t-elle en fonction de variables comme l’emplacement géographique, la période historique, le cadre socio-culturel (pouvant être marqué par l’expérience de l’esclavagisme dans les Caraïbes ou encore la répression de l’Église catholique dans le contexte canadien français)? Conservet-elle, en dépit de tout, des éléments communs ? Voici les questions auxquelles il devient possible de répondre à la lecture des douze articles colligés dans ce collectif réunissant des chercheur(e)s d’origines diverses.

Was Edgar Allan Poe’s work vulgar or a «new specimen of beauty»? Did he represent a critical puzzle for his influential readers or a basis for redefining American literature? This book offers a new understanding of Poe’s literary significance by considering the transatlantic reception of the author in French translation. The translation of Poe into French by Charles Baudelaire ennobled Poe aesthetically and catalysed a wave of critical responses to his work across the Atlantic in the early twentieth century. Readings by T.S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams and Aldous Huxley here become the focus of transatlantic analysis. Contrastive close readings of key essays in which these Anglophone writers engaged with the French Poe set out to achieve two things: first, they shed new light on the constitution of Poe’s commanding critical reputation; secondly, they test comparative methodology as the primary tool of transatlantic enquiry. Situated within an expanding body of Poe scholarship but atypical in design, this book promises to bring about unexpected insights by systematically relating and comparing French and Anglophone discourses.

Éthique de l’imitation dans la littérature et le cinéma de l’immigration en France (1986–2005) Cette étude est consacrée aux pratiques imitatives qui continuent de caractériser un grand nombre d’œuvres littéraires et de films issus de l’immigration dans la France postcoloniale. L’imitation de la culture française dans la production artistique des immigrants et de leurs descendants a généralement été interprétée de deux manières par les critiques: soit comme le signe d’un manque de talent et parfois aussi d’intégrité, soit comme un acte politique à travers lequel les artistes en question exprimeraient leur mécontentement par rapport à la société et à la politique françaises passées et présentes. L’intervention de ce livre consiste à mettre en relief un aspect souvent ignoré des pratiques imitatives, y compris le plagiat, à savoir leur dimension éthique. Les artistes dont l’œuvre est analysée dans ce livre ont des liens avec le Vietnam, le Cameroun, l’Algérie, le Liban et la Tunisie.

The formative influences of Paris and France on the Anglo-Irish writer George Moore (1852– 1933) cannot be underestimated. While the years Moore spent in Paris in the 1870s were seminal for his artistic awakening and development, the associations and friendships he formed in French literary and artistic circles exerted an enduring influence on his creative career. Moore maintained close ties with France throughout his life and his numerous contacts extended to social, musical and cultural spheres. He introduced the Impressionists to a British audience and his importation of French literary innovation into the English novel was remarkable. Exploring Moore’s early years in Paris and his ongoing engagement with the experimental modernity of his French models, these essays offer new insights into this cosmopolitan writer’s work. Moore emerges as a turnof-the-century European artist whose eclectic writings reflect the complex evolution of literature from Naturalism to Modernism through Symbolism and Decadence.

Ballon Rond et Héros Modernes Quand la littérature s’intéresse à la masculinité des terrains de football Si le sport a d’abord été considéré comme un «divertissement pour analphabètes», la littérature sportive émerge dès la fin du XIXe siècle et les collections qui lui sont dédiées se multiplient. En 1928, la Fédération française de football crée son concours littéraire. Dès la Première Guerre mondiale, les modes d’OutreManche s’exportent et le joueur de football devient une figure emblématique des années 1920. Avec le joueur de football, la littérature délimite les contours d’un nouvel idéal masculin. Dans les années 1970, le développement du spectacle sportif, la médiatisation des grandes rencontres et l’évidente démocratisation du sport invitent à repenser le sport comme un fait social total. La littérature ne reste pas sourde à cet appel : elle questionne les nouvelles formes du spectacle footballistique et le sens du jeu dans la société contemporaine. L’histoire du ballon rond mais également l’abondante production romanesque qui l’accompagne nous invitent à proposer ici une étude des discours littéraires sur le football et à sonder les modèles masculins qui y sont érigés.

New Critical Perspectives on Franco-Irish Relations

Facially wounded servicemen were perhaps the ultimate victims of the First World War. They became walking reminders of the conflict and their experiences reveal the impact of the war not only on the combatants but also on European societies at large. This book explores for the first time the individual and collective significance of facially disfigured First World War combatants in France, Germany and Great Britain. The analysis undertaken in this book uncovers how the wounded perceived and presented themselves and how they were perceived and represented by others. Artistic and literary representations are considered, along with initiatives carried out by hospitals, the government and the combatants’ fellow countrymen. With an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, this study illuminates our understanding of how the combatant and the onlooker made sense of the experience and the memory of the war.

Das Buch behandelt die politische und kulturelle Situation Belgiens aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln. Das kleine Land mit den drei Sprachgruppen und den unterschiedlichen cultural networks bildet ein hochkomplexes System und ist für Außenstehende schwer durchschaubar. Auf der Basis von Interviews, einer Datenerhebung sowie einer Comic-Analyse beleuchtet die Autorin kritisch die Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen frankophonen und niederländischsprachigen Belgiern. Vor dem Hintergrund der historisch-politischen Entwicklung stellt sie die Frage, ob zwei unabhängige Kulturen innerhalb des Landes existieren. Ihr besonderes Interesse gilt dabei den Auswirkungen der strukturellen Asymmetrie und des politischen Systems auf die Identität.

This collection of critical essays proposes new and original readings of the relationship between French and Irish literature and culture. It seeks to re-evaluate, deconstruct and question artistic productions and cultural phenomena while pointing to the potential for comparative analysis between the two countries. The volume covers the French wine tradition, the Irish rebellion and the weight of religious and cultural tradition in both countries, seeking to examine these familiar topics from unconventional perspectives. Some contributors offer readings of established figures in Irish and French literature, from Flann O’Brien to Albert Camus; others highlight writers who have been left outside the critical frame, including Sydney Owenson, Jean Giono and Katherine Cecil Thurston. Finally, the volume explores areas such as sport, education, justice and alternative religious practices, generating unexpected and thought-provoking cultural connections between France and Ireland.

Crossing Borders The Interrelation of Fact and Fiction in Historical Works, Travel Tales, Autobiography and Reportage In the twentieth century, the boundaries between different literary genres started to be questioned, raising a discussion about the various narrative modes of factual and fictional discourses. Moving on from the limited traditional studies of genre definitions, this book argues that the borders between these two types of discourse depend on complex issues of epistemology, literary traditions and social and political constraints. This study attempts a systematic and specific analysis of how literary works, and in particular documentary ones, where the borders are more difficult to define, can be classified as factual or fictional. The book deals with several areas of discourse, including history, travel tales, autobiography and reportage, and opens up perspectives on the very different ways in which documentary works make use of the inescapable presence of both factual and fictional elements.

Esta investigación se desarrolla en tres ámbitos de imponente amplitud: la narración autobiográfica, el texto literario y la obra de Salvador Dalí. El eje vertebrador es la consideración de la autobiografía como obra artística, lo cual conlleva un análisis de los diferentes niveles del texto, así como de sus valores literarios. La vida secreta de Salvador Dalí, publicada en 1942, es más que un texto que sirve de ejemplificación de cuestiones especulativas; es una obra donde se expresa de forma excepcional la complejidad de los temas que cubre la reflexión teórica sobre lo autobiográfico, desde el problema de la referencia, la veracidad y la simulación a la creación de realidad, lenguaje e identidad, pasando por cuestiones ya clásicas como la (in)compatibilidad entre la ficción y la memoria biográfica.

La Guerra Civil y el franquismo provocaron víctimas en toda España. No obstante, hasta hoy, no todas las víctimas reciben la misma atención pública. Las historias olvidadas o insuficientemente escuchadas forman parte de la literatura de la memoria en lengua castellana, catalana y vasca. Allí se ponen en escena versiones de memoria alternativas, muchas veces, historias y víctimas nacionales. Este libro ofrece un nuevo paradigma de víctimas basado en diez novelas en castellano, catalán y vasco, siendo la víctima el centro de interés. Die Autorin behandelt erstmals umfassend sowohl die Person als auch das Werk der Schriftstellerin und Politikerin Margarita Nelken (1894–1968). Diese fand bislang hauptsächlich aufgrund ihres politischen und sozialen Engagements in der Zweiten Republik Spaniens, im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg und während ihres Exils in Mexiko Beachtung – ihre zahlreichen publizistischen und literarischen Texte blieben dagegen weitgehend unberücksichtigt. Die Autorin untersucht auch bisher unbekannte Texte und stellt die enge Verbindung zwischen den literarisch-künstlerischen und den politischen Schriften Nelkens heraus. Ihr Augenmerk gilt dabei den verschiedenen Formen von Nelkens Kritik an der Gesellschaft und insbesondere an den herrschenden Geschlechterverhältnissen vor und während des Exils.

Este libro examina seis obras que representan en escena tanto la sociedad latinoamericana como la peninsular, y dan voz a la desestabilización de los discursos hegemónicos de género, mostrando la arbitrariedad de los mismos. Las autoras elegidas para el análisis son la española Lourdes Ortiz, la mexicana Sabina Berman y la argentina Diana Raznovich. Las dramaturgas estudiadas abordan desde diferentes puntos de vista: el mito, la historia y el arquetipo, los intereses que esconde la ideología dominante, con el propósito común de cuestionar los discursos que dictan el comportamiento genérico e imponen un sistema de desigualdades genéricas y sexuales. Las obras recogidas en este estudio son: Electra-Babel (1992) y Fedra (2013), de Lourdes Ortiz; Águila o sol (1985) y Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda (1995), de Sabina Berman; y Casa matriz (1988) y De atrás para adelante (2000), de Diana Raznovich.

La mayoría de estudios sobre la poesía de guerra escrita durante la Guerra Civil española se han centrado en una perspectiva histórica, ideológica y sociológica enfrentando poéticamente al bando republicano y al nacional. Este libro estudia los textos poéticos desde una perspectiva de análisis textual. La autora ha elaborado una metodología que ayuda a construir las características de esta poesía, es decir, su poética. ¿Se puede entender esta poesía como un todo más allá de la división de poesía republicana y poesía nacional? ¿Qué tienen en común estos poemas, qué los diferencian? ¿El hecho de que un poeta haya pertenecido a un bando, hace que su poesía sea poesía republicana o nacional o simplemente poesía de la Guerra Civil? Este libro explora estas y otras preguntas.

Catorce investigadores de diferentes países y nacionalidades, especialistas en diferentes campos de estudio sobre la lengua española – Didáctica del ELE y del EFE, lengua de especialidad, lexicología, lingüística aplicada, terminología, traducción –, resaltan, al enfocar el léxico dentro de un contexto profesional y cultural específicos, la permeabilidad y renovación de la lengua española. Sus investigaciones inéditas que se enmarcan dentro de diversas perspectivas y áreas de investigación como la cibernética, la cognitiva, la didáctica, la estructuralista y la lingüística aplicada, abordan temas como los préstamos, las colocaciones sintácticas, la traducción, el léxico profesional y de especialidad, el discurso retórico de la prensa, el lenguaje del turismo, los enfoques didácticos sobre el léxico. El resultado de sus análisis de corpus muestra diferentes interpretaciones del léxico español dentro de los ámbitos arriba mencionados.

So kann der Autor Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede besonders im Hinblick auf die morphosemantischen Strukturen aufzeigen. Die Untersuchung befasst sich also einerseits mit den geschichtlichen Grundlagen der internationalen Wortfamilienforschung und andererseits mit den Konvergenzen und Divergenzen, die sich auf Basis des erforschten Materials ergeben.

Cosmopolitismo, pedagogías y modernización en Iberoamérica Revisitar el costumbrismo. Cosmopolitismo, pedagogías y modernización en Iberoamérica es una recopilación de artículos cuyo foco de estudio es el costumbrismo del siglo XIX como discurso que vehiculó y respondió a los procesos de modernización en Latinoamérica. Los trabajos que aquí se incluyen se acercan al costumbrismo discutiendo problemáticas estéticas, culturales y políticas de distintas tradiciones latinoamericanas – Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Cuba, México, Perú y Venezuela –, entrando en diálogo también con España. Nuestro objetivo con este proyecto es volver al costumbrismo latinoamericano para restituirle todo su grosor histórico y estético, alineándolo con otros debates sobre el siglo XIX que han abordado este periodo desde los estudios culturales y la crítica literaria.

Fragile Memory, Shifting Impunity Commemoration and Contestation in Post-Dictatorship Argentina and Uruguay Fragile Memory, Shifting Impunity is an interdisciplinary study of commemorative sites related to human rights violations committed primarily during dictatorial rule in Argentina (1976–1983) and Uruguay (1973–1985). Taking as a departure point the ‘politics of memory’ – a term that acknowledges memory’s propensity for engagement beyond the cultural sphere – this study shifts the focus away from exclusively aesthetic and architectural readings of marches, memorials and monuments to instead analyse their emergence and transformation in post-dictatorship Argentina and Uruguay.

Antonfrancesco Grazzini, known as Il Lasca (The Roach), was born and lived in Florence at the height of the Renaissance. He wrote prolifically in most genres, including novelle, burlesque poetry, and comedies. As a playwright he was, in his time, more popular than even Machiavelli. The Friar is a farce in three acts which satirizes, in the manner of Boccaccio, lustful men of the cloth and their willing female victims. The Bawd subverts stock classical comedy characters and situations while placing them in contemporary Florence. The result is the usual mayhem involving gullible fools, lustful young people, corrupt scheming servants, and a bit of black magic. The rise and subsequent popularity of the commedia dell’arte owes much to the likes of Il Lasca.

Gli atti di questa giornata restituiscono la multiformità della riflessione sviluppatasi nella giornata leviana a Lussemburgo. Primo Levi et la chimie des mots est un ouvrage qui veut mettre en évidence la binarité entre chimie et littérature qui a certainement contribué à rendre l’œuvre de Levi unique en son genre. Les actes de ce volume présentent la réflexion multiforme qui s’est développée pendant la journée dédiée à Levi au Luxembourg.

L’autore si occupa del senso di oggetti in scrittrici migranti postcoloniali sulla base di un close reading di opere di scrittrici di espressione italiana. La parte introduttiva dà ragione del possibile significato degli oggetti in opere letterarie di carattere narrativo: sulla base di stimoli provenienti dalla narratologia critica (M. Bal), dalla semiotica (U. Eco), dalla riflessione sull’arte (N. Bryson), dalla linguistica dei corpora e dalla filosofia analitica del linguaggio propone un’interpretazione degli oggetti come entità che passano dallo stato di nomi comuni a quello di nomi propri con diverso peso specifico. L’approccio così delineato viene applicato a un corpus motivatamente scelto. La conclusione riassume i risultati sul piano dei contenuti e su quello metodologico.

Urban Space, Violence and Gender Identity in Post-War Italian Crime Fiction The works of Giorgio Scerbanenco repeatedly articulate and explore the implications of new forms of criminality that emerged in Italy’s post-war transformation towards its «economic miracle». An indepth analysis of Scerbanenco’s Duca Lamberti series constitutes the critical focus of this study, and in particular the psychological resonances of the role played by the author’s controversial representation of the urban space, its violence, (in)justice and gender roles. In what way do these elements heighten and/or exaggerate the nature of the criminal acts and the reader’s experience? This study therefore investigates a reader’s potential response to the content, the settings, and, above all, the characters Scerbanenco portrays in these four novels.

Narratives of Non-Mothering in French The decision to reject motherhood is the subject of several key works of literature in French since the new millennium. This book looks at first-person accounts of voluntary childlessness by women writing in French. The book explores how women narrate their decision not to mother, the issues that they face in doing so and the narrative techniques that they employ to justify their stories. It asks how these authors challenge stereotypes of the childless woman by claiming their own identity in narrative, publicly proclaiming their right to choose and writing a femininity that is not connected to motherhood. Using feminist, sociological and psychoanalytic theories to interrogate non-mothering, this work is the first book-length study of narratives that counter this long-standing taboo. It brings together authors who stake out a new terrain, creating a textual space in which to take ownership of their childlessness and call for new understandings of female identity beyond maternity.

An Interpretation of Selected Novels Le genre entendu comme construction socioculturelle de la «différence des sexes» a permis de remettre en cause une hiérarchie des groupes sexués fondée sur les seules différences biologiques. La mise à nu des multiples processus de naturalisation du statut et du rôle social du masculin et du féminin a été diversement interprétée et utilisée, parfois galvaudée ou mal comprise. Dans le champ de la littérature et des arts, les réflexions sur le féminin/masculin ainsi que la mise à contribution des études de genre sur ces questions ont pu faire l’objet, font encore l’objet de rejet, de méfiance et/ou d’incompréhension. Inversement et simultanément, cet outil qu’est le concept de genre est devenu «à la mode», voire «politiquement correct» et de bon ton, sans toutefois être toujours mobilisé à bon escient: de ce fait, il se trouve parfois privé de sa pertinence et de son efficience herméneutique. Les différentes contributions de cet ouvrage envisagent ces aspects contradictoires tout en précisant quelques-unes des différentes déclinaisons du concept de genre en territoire européen, notamment en Espagne, en France et en Grande-Bretagne. Le domaine de la littérature et la question de «l’entrée en écriture» y sont également explorés avec une particulière attention.

This book analyses one of the many levels of complexity not readily apparent to the reader of Zola’s fiction: the question of the author’s family secrets. The novels addressed here present a variety of sub-textual issues highlighting Zola’s sexual insecurity and anxiety. Their analysis reveals a mystery related to female sexuality that pervades the narratives of Thérèse Raquin and La Fortune des Rougon, and that is silently transmitted in Madeleine Férat, La Faute de l’Abbé Mouret, La Bête humaine, La Curée, Nana, Le Docteur Pascal and Vérité. The novels are explored from the standpoint of psychoanalytical criticism, a tool particularly appropriate for examining Zola’s language and illuminating the recurrent theme of ‘the Return of the repressed’. Four psychoanalytical theories are adopted: Nicolas Abraham’s and Maria Toroks’ theories of psychic development (presenting the concept of the phantom) and Sigmund Freud’s and Jacques Lacan’s theories of infantile sexuality.

A Critical Contribution This book explores the environment and cultural context of Colombian political novels published between 1951 and 1987. Challenging the label of «novelas de la violencia», the author analyses them as products of their own historical time and takes into account their broader implications, such as their representation of the society they narrate. These novels are shown to be the product of political and ideological issues: the real preoccupations of the writers were the balance of power, social dysfunctionality and the need for reform in a society transitioning from rural to urban. These issues are traced in a close reading of representative novels, in which feature letrados and intellectuals and their role in the evolution of society, culture, literature and power in twentieth-century Colombia. With its critical-theoretical approach, this book constitutes a significant and innovative contribution to the debate on Latin American culture and literature.

La compétence paraphrastique en français langue seconde

Women’s Individuation in the Works of Pierrette Fleutiaux Strange Adventures examines portrayals of womanhood in the works of prize-winning French author Pierrette Fleutiaux. Fleutiaux’s refreshing pictures of womanhood offer insights into how women can become more whole, substantial and free in themselves and in their relationships, as well as how they can contribute to the external world through their creativity and leadership. The study demonstrates how Fleutiaux’s heroines navigate the external, bodily and inner situations of adolescence, early adult life, marriage, motherhood, maturity, leadership and death, in the process developing greater inner resources of wisdom, compassion and resilience. This volume considers selections from Fleutiaux’s œuvre, from her first short fiction Histoire de la chauve-souris to her recent Loli le temps venu, including Métamorphoses de la reine (Goncourt de la nouvelle) and Nous sommes éternels (Prix Femina). Using a theoretical framework which draws on Jungian concepts and the philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir, the study analyses women’s individuation trajectories at each stage of life. Throughout, Fleutiaux’s depictions are shown to pose a challenge to existing conceptions of womanhood and individuality, thus opening up new understandings of what it means to be a woman, and to be human.

Bremer Schulbegleitforschung zu Lernaufgaben im Französisch- und Spanischunterricht der Sekundarstufe I Gegenstand dieser Publikation sind Aktionsforschungsprojekte, bei denen Teams aus einer Lehrkraft und Studierenden Lernaufgaben für den Französisch- bzw. Spanischunterricht der Sekundarstufe I entwickelten, im Unterricht erprobten und unter einer praxisrelevanten Forschungsfrage empirisch untersuchten. Einleitend werden das Konzept der Lernaufgabe und die Qualifizierungsmaßnahmen erläutert, die die Teammitglieder zur Lernaufgabenentwicklung und zur Durchführung der Aktionsforschung durchlaufen haben. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es sich lohnt, Aktionsforschung in die Lehreraus- und -fortbildung zu integrieren, um Theorie und Praxis stärker miteinander zu verbinden und Reflexionsprozesse anzuregen.

La compétence paraphrastique (CP) est la capacité à produire des phrases exprimant approximativement le même sens. Elle est essentielle à l’apprenant d’une langue seconde. D’une part, elle l’aide à présenter une idée plus clairement et, d’autre part, elle lui permet de ne pas interrompre la production langagière. Grâce à la CP, l’apprenant a recours à de multiples façons d’exprimer une idée. Cet ouvrage porte sur le développement de la CP en français langue seconde aux niveaux avancés. De manière intéressante, un apprenant avancé éprouve parfois des difficultés à reformuler son discours. Ce livre propose une méthodologie de l’évaluation et de l’amélioration de la CP. La méthode didactique proposée inclut une présentation simplifiée des concepts de la Théorie Sens–Texte qui sont ensuite utilisés dans des exercices de reformulation. Cette nouvelle démarche pédagogique pourrait servir de référence aux enseignants de français langue seconde au niveau universitaire.

This series aims to publish monographs, editions or collections of papers based on recent research into modern French Literature. It welcomes contributions from academics, researchers and writers in British and Irish universities in particular. Modern French Identities focuses on the French and Francophone writing of the twentieth century, whose formal experiments and revisions of genre have combined to create an entirely new set of literary forms, from the thematic autobiographies of Michel Leiris and Bernard Noël to the magic realism of French Caribbean writers. The idea that identities are constructed rather than found, and that the self is an area to explore rather than a given pretext, runs through much of modern French literature, from Proust, Gide and Apollinaire to Kristeva, Barthes, Duras, Germain and Roubaud. This series reflects a concern to explore the turnof-the-century turmoil in ideas and values that is expressed in the works of theorists like Lacan, Irigaray and Bourdieu and to follow through the impact of current ideologies such as feminism and postmodernism on the literary and cultural interpretation and presentation of the self, whether in terms of psychoanalytic theory, gender, autobiography, cinema, fiction and poetry, or in newer forms like performance art. The series publishes studies of individual authors and artists, comparative studies, and interdisciplinary projects, including those where art and cinema intersect with literature.

Questa collana, che mette in primo piano la multitestualità, raccoglie volumi dedicati alla cultura testuale italiana in senso ampio. Da un lato la multitestualità è riferita alle sue varianti, comprendenti cioè, oltre a narrativa e poesia, libretti d’opera, testi teatrali, sceneggiature cinematografiche, weblog e fumetti, forme narrative che spaziano quindi tra vari modi di intendere la cultura. Ma la multitestualità si interessa soprattutto alle interazioni tra culture testuali visive e auditive e quindi alle ibridazioni intermediali. Tale concezione multiprospettica della narrazione invita ad approcci pluridisciplinari in grado di cogliere le trasposizioni transmediali e transculturali che formano i quadri costituenti di memoria e identità culturali. Romania Viva versteht sich als innovatorischer Beitrag zur Romanistik. Die Reihe widmet sich den literarischen und filmischen Artefakten der Romania in ihrer ganzen Vielfalt. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Gegenwart. Im Gegensatz zu anderen romanistischen Reihen wird Romania Viva nicht nur Studien über die Literaturen und filmischen Kulturen der Romania vorstellen, sondern auch Primärtexte veröffentlichen. Der interessierten Leserschaft eröffnet sich auf diese Art und Weise nicht nur – wie ansonsten üblich – ein ‚indirekter’ Blick (etwa durch die Brille der Dissertation), sondern ein direkter Zugang. Auch in einer weiteren Hinsicht sticht Romania Viva aus der Vielzahl der bereits existierenden Reihen hervor: In Zeiten der zunehmenden Zergliederung der Romania in Einzeldisziplinen wie Hispanistik, Italianistik oder Gallo-Romanistik will Romania Viva gerade den Zusammenhalt der Romania betonen, wie er von den Begründern der wissenschaftlichen Disziplin ‚Romanistik’ anvisiert war. So ergibt sich konzeptionell eine überaus weite Perspektive, die alle romanischen Kulturen der Gegenwart umfasst. Gerade die romanischen Gegenwartsliteraturen zeigen mit Autoren wie Michel Houellebecq, Susanna Tamaro oder Javier Marías, dass die Romania lebt und interessiert: Romania Viva eben. Die Reihe erfüllt darüber hinaus das Desiderat einer intermedialen Auseinandersetzung mit dem romanischen Kino der Gegenwart. Dans le panorama de la recherche et, plus particulièrement, de l’hispanisme, un nouveau paradigme privilégiant la prise en considération des échanges et de la circulation de modèles s’affirme. Cette nouvelle perspective permet l’émergence d’un nouveau champ d’études centré sur les relations transatlantiques, transnationales et intercontinentales ; elle met l’accent sur les échanges, les migrations et les passages qui se déclinent de différentes façons entre les cultures des deux côtés de l’Atlantique, depuis plus de cinq siècles. Plus que le paquebot de ligne destiné à la traversée régulière entre l’Europe et l’Amérique, le titre de cette nouvelle collection Trans-Atlántico/Trans-Atlantique évoque le roman homonyme de Witold Gombrowicz – où apparait justement le trait d’union –, les déambulations du protagoniste entre deux mondes, ainsi que les rapprochements entre des lieux bien différents d’une même réalité (la Pologne, où Gombrowicz est né, et l’Argentine, lieu de son séjour prolongé). La collection Trans-Atlántico/Trans-Atlantique se veut un espace d’édition ouvert aux travaux qui privilégient cette approche de la littérature comme lieu transculturel par excellence, lieu de dialogue et de controverse entre différents types de discours, lieu, enfin, de tous les possibles, où s’élaborent de nouvelles pratiques de pensée et de création pour donner du sens à l’en-dehors qui l’entoure. En el panorama actual de la investigación, especialmente en el campo del hispanismo, se afirma la presencia de un nuevo paradigma que toma en cuenta, privilegiándolos, los intercambios y la circulación de modelos. Esta nueva perspectiva ha permitido la emergencia de un nuevo campo de estudios, centrado en las relaciones trasatlánticas, transnacionales e intercontinentales, que subraya la importancia de los intercambios, migraciones y pasajes que se declinan de diferentes modos entre las culturas de los dos lados del Atlántico, desde hace más de cinco siglos. El título de esta nueva colección Trans-Atlántico/ Trans-Atlantique se propone evocar, más allá del vapor de línea que hace la travesía regular entre dos lugares diferentes de una misma realidad (Polonia, donde Gombrowicz nació y Argentina, lugar donde reside de manera prolongada). La colección Trans-Atlántico/Trans-Atlantique es un espacio de publicación de obras que se centren en este tipo de abordaje de la literatura como lugar transcultural por excelencia, lugar de diálogo y de controversia entre diferentes tipos de discurso, lugar de todos los posibles donde se elaboran nuevas prácticas de conocimiento y de creación para dar sentido a lo que está afuera y que, sin embargo, la literatura comprende.
