PEEPING IN NEW YORK CITY

Introduction

INTRODUCTION

This book documents most of the development and process of my graduation project ‘ Peeping in New York City’ at the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Delft in 2009. The project is conducted in the Border Conditions Studio of the ‘Architecture & Modernity: Public Building’ track. The project can be split up into two parts; the first part is the field trip to New York City and the mapping that resulted from this trip. The second part of the project is the translation from the mapping to a methodology to design the final building. At the start of the project, only the trip to New York City and the assignment of the analysis and mapping in the city were given. Furthermore we all knew that the site for our design had to be somewhere in the five boroughs of New York City. All other boundaries and parameters were open and had to be set during the project.

as the movement and rotation technique conducted during the mapping process.

When working at a certain hole there is always the chance of being stopped by a stranger, the owner or the police. This hazard is part of the theme of peeping at strangers and the theme of voyeurism. The pictures are taken as fast as possible, and under a constant time limitation. In certain cases a mapping gets aborted, when a person finds out that he is being captured on camera. But in other cases the camera is as close as one foot from a person, without the person noticing it. The actual way of gathering the images of a concealed space is almost as important as the processing of the information and the final reconstruction of the space afterwards.

THE TOOLS Special mapping techniques have been developed to disclose the concealed. On the next pages the different tools are shown and their characteristics explained.

NIKON COOLPIX S500 This camera is perfectly made to peep through small holes and openings. The best property is the weight of the camera and the small lens that can be easily manouvred in narrow places.

NIKON D70S The SLR camera works best in combination with one of the mirrors, preferably the ‘Pop-Up Hairbrush with Mirror’. The lens is too big to get through small openings, but in combination with the mirror the camera is ideal to sneek under doors and other low situated holes.

14

PEEPING IN NEW YORK CITY

The Tools

15

POP-UP HAIRBRUSH WITH MIRROR This mirror is used to look under doors or over fences. At larger holes the mirror is put into the hole, to capture the inside. The mirror is used together with the large Nikon D70s SLR camera.

DENTIST MIRROR

This mirror is used occasionally, the main advantage is the capability of sneeking into small holes. At the same time it is a disadvantage too, the small surface of the mirror covers a very limited view of the space. To capture the obstructed space the viewpoint of the camera is fixed, the mirror is moved into different angles.

MEASURE TOOL

The measure tool is very important to measure the lenght and the width of the holes. At a distance of 1 foot a picture is taking of every hole, which makes them comparable. All openings and holes shown in this book are to scale 1/2.

17

COMBINING THE IMAGES

By rotating the camera in extreme angles around a peephole, the space gets revealed as complete as possible, but the camera can get obstructed in many ways. The size of the hole matters as well as its shape, deepness and any obstruction behind the hole. The peep sequence varies from as little as 7 to over 200 images. Not all images are useful, and some captures are overlapping. Through different stitching tests, Photoshop turned out to be best tool for combining the images. Out of every image the area that covers the hole or opening is selected by the polygonal lasso tool with a feather of 15 pixels.(1) The selection is copied and put together (2) .Together with the other selections it forms the final result. (3) There is no scaling or colour manipulating. Only rotating is allowed to line the images up, and the use of the eraser tool to combine the different pieces into one.

Above: The graphic shows the three stepped construction method of combining the photoshop cut out pieces into the final assembly. Page 17: Kosciuszko Street image.

Routes and peepholes

ROUTES AND PEEPHOLES

The routes taken in New York City are based on three different games that provide directions to random and surprising places. The images captured at the different sites reveal spaces that have a narrative related to a specific neighbourhood. The final results show a New York City that is full of mysterious atmospheres and unexpected spaces. They have all different qualities towards lightning colour, materials, and surface. The peep sequence reveals factories next to schools, empty buildings that have traces of occupation, and a laboratory in a housing complex. By peeping literally through the border of an obstruction or faรงade the world that is behind gets revealed and a new New York City is mapped.

22 PEEPHOLES

22 PEEPHOLES The next 22 peepholes are an interpretation of the spaces encountered on the random route through New York City. The final results of these peepings are shown in an order from small spaces to large one. The final results are all montages done in Photoshop by combining all the small fragments as explained in the first chapter. The montage appears to represent a space, in a traditional way. At first site the image can look quit common. If, however, the image is studied more carefully, the montage technique becomes visible. Walls that are straight in reality appear angled in the montage. Spaces are sometimes not continuous and have multiple repetitions. When pictures are taken with an automatically ISO setting, to obtain the clearest result, the amount of pixels varies in the final montage and different patterns do occur. When a mirror is used the montage consists of circular or oval sets of images, it is traceable in the final image. The type of camera and exact mirror is still visible in the final result. When studying all final results is becomes clear that the type and size of the peephole has large influence on the way the final image is constructed, but there is not one consistency in the diameter and size of the hole in relation to the size of the area that is captured of a certain space. Other parameters like the camera movement possibilities and obstructions are more important.

INTERPRETATIVE MAPS

KOSCIUSZKO STREET

The next sequence processes the captured images in a way that is more abstract. It generates new information far beyond the original photographed spaces and creates new possibilities for architecture to emerge. The final products clearly resemble the original space and all photographed elements are traceable to elements in the real space. When experimenting with new assembly techniques, the idea is to use the capture sequence in new ways that will result in surprising and unexpected results, but the final products are closely related to the basic mapping themes.

Above: Kosciuszko Street 2 Image capture of two holes. The biggest opening is captured using a mirror, the smaller one is pictured through a tiny hole. These openings are researched in the second part of this chapter. Page 85: Over 70 images are used to make this combination picture possible. This image is part of the basic mapping series.

What is interesting in the result is the extreme change in colour from yellow grey towards pink. This effect is exaggerated in the second series, that has a saturation in red of +45. The third series is in black and white.

Above: Square parts of images are made in Photoshop, size 12.56 x 4.57 cm 300 dpi. Page 93: 4 montages in Panorama Maker. Three images have colour alterations applied manually. The second image has a brighter hue and saturation setting, the third has only red colours and the last one is in black and white with the accent on different spots.

Right: Experiment of combining ultra small image fragments to rebuild the space. The images are generated automatically by taking the middle three pixels out of 17 pictures. The first thin image at the left is the result. The most right image is the same exact picture, but extruded in a horizontal direction. From only 3 pixels a new world is created, but the elements of the space are very recognizable.

99

Above: Two different methods of transferring the image band to black and white. In this method the colours are disregarded and the image shows a layered collage of thin and thick lines stacked on top of each other. Page 101: Final image assembly. The space is captured in its essence, the colours are recognizable as well as the red and blue shopping cart. This view is an ultra fragmented view. In a horizontal way it is fragmented by the 17 images, in the vertical direction the image is built up in fragmented lines.

This compilation of the 42 selections forms a route by itself. Panorama Maker 4 constructed the images in such a way that the separate images start to form a route that is directed by the contents of the separate frames. Geheime tip van onze correspondent in New York

„No standing, no more than 4 to a party, and no shouting.”

The Back Room.

The visual and programmatic difference can be represented into a club that has multiple lounges and dance spaces that have the same qualities towards each other. The building should be a little hidden, a little mysterious. The façade design is very important because it can hide or show its contents. This theme is close related to both my mapping

FORT GEORGE MANHATTAN

Fort George

FORT GEORGE, MANHATTAN

The location for nightclub is in the Fort George area, at the top of Manhattan. The area has potentials that are comparable to the peephole images sequence. It is an uncanny area, a little mystical, you are being watched all the time by people who know you are a stranger. A nightclub will be in conflict with the existing residential neighbourhood. How should a building use this conflicting condition towards its advantage? The new nightclub design will be inside another building, it Right: Aerial photo of Manhattan with Fort George at the top part. EXISTING BUILDING

The existing building is split up into two parts. The top level has windows and masonry. The roof can be used by the occupants. The inside consists probably out of storage space and these spaces are connected to the main floor and the other part of the building by elevator. The new club is situated in the lower part of the building because the existing program is concealed here and one can fantasies about its content. In contrast to the apartments above it is unclear what is inside this part of the building. The speculation and uncertenty is important, because the conducted mapping was based on revealing this type of space. The building is the last one of a line of buildings on a hill. The buildings are built on steel columns; the construction of the building that is used for my design has its construction covered. The assumption is that the structure has the same characteristics as the other buildings. The only difference is that the building used for the graduation design has the outside covered with large stones. The program in this part of the building is probably storage and left over space. Inside are concrete floors.

different images are put together. The creation of space is based as well on computer logic. By using the McNeel’s 3D program Rhinoceros, the computer can be used as a tool to create space based on computer logic. By test conducted during the summer I started to be interested in the Boolean operations in Rhino. The Boolean operations basically do 4 things: Intersect two or more objects, Split them at the intersection(s) found, Delete (discard) the parts not wanted, and Join everything back together. Everything you can do with Boolean operations you can also do by “manually” successively using the above four commands. After multiple Boolean operation I have limited myself to the use of one shape that I use to design spaces. The shape is a clear shape that is formed by combining a rectangular shape with a triangle one. By rotating, shifting scale I became capable of creating spaces inside the mountain and existing construction.

One of the first ideas was to use an algorithm to move the shape tool around, such as 1 forward, scale with .8 and rotate 3. To comply with human scale, functionality and strict structural load bearing lines from the existing structure that holds up the apartment complex above, a more freestyle way of moving the shape tool had to be applied.
