PROFESSIONAL PROJECTS KREBS U. HERDE LA.ARCH. PWP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECURE TRÜB FÜR GRÜN

Seestadtquartier, Seestadt Aspern

KREBS U. HERDE LA.ARCH. 5

Vienna, Austria

Commissioned by City of Vienna Project Data Design Development (DD) Contract Documents (CD) Team Erwin Umlauf, Civil Engineer

In one oft he biggest urban development projects in Europe, the Seestadt Aspern in Vienna will create new living and working space for 20000 people in the next 20 years. We propose a big public space in the central Seeparkquartier, which forms a robust framework for the growing city. The branched network of streets and squares is characterized by a continuous paving and an urban „material canon“ of asphalt, granite and cast iron. As a material of high durability, local granite is used for formative elements. These form a discreet „jewelry“ as fountains, benches and ring-shaped enclosures of tree grates. Plane trees, as the embodiment of the „city tree“ par excellence, characterize the tree framework in two different growth forms. While building structures in the streets they create a spatial interlocking with the environment, the central sequence is kept free as an „urban space“ for the most varied forms of urban life. A unique feature of the design are the five fountain sculptures, which are fed with fresh drinking water. They make water a vital element in the Seestadt. They are characterized as a serially layered group of figures, have different dimensions and make it possible to experience the water in several ways.

Winterthur, Switzerland

Commissioned by City of Winterthur Project Data Design Development (DD) Contract Documents (CD)

The approximately 7 km long section of the Töss in the city of Winterthur is a recreational area on the doorsteps with great importance. For this reason, with the involvement of the neighborhood population, an implementation oriented mission statement was developed in which social, hydraulic and ecological requirements were harmonized. The focus is on the project idea of a “Wild Landscape Park” as a natural and recreational area, which develops over time. As a continuous landscape, it not only encompasses idyllic natural areas, but also districts with industrial monuments and hydroelectric power plants. By partially defining the usage priority for recreation and nature, the various claims are brought together. I this phase we where designing w

Jewel Changi Airport

PWP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECURE 11

Singapore

Commissioned by Changi Airport Group and Capital Malls Asia Project Data Design Development (DD) Architecture Safdie Architects

Jewel is an integrated project at the Singapore Airport that creates a multi-sensory experience of nature within a climate-controlled glass dome. An eight-acre garden over interior retail space integrates unexpected features that will attract adventurers of all ages. Gardens terrace down nearly 30 meters to a central gathering space with informal amphitheater seating. Restaurants and cafes as well as an event plaza can all be accessed from within the garden. Visitors can experience a light and water show at the center of the building, where water and captured rain fall from the roof becoming a projection screen.

My duties where to review all the planting and help with design development of attractions like mazes or kids playgrounds in the airport and the production of graphics for presentations.

Constitution Gardens Washington D.C., USA

Commissioned by Trust for the National Mall Project Data Contract Documents (CD) Architecture Rogers Marvel Architects

By carefully refining the scale, shape, and function of each landscape component, PWP will create an integrated environment that is ecologically productive. Large areas of the site will require soil excavation and replacement with a reconstituted growing medium and drainage layer. A variety of plants and conditions in close proximity will offer a richness of use for local wildlife and discovery for park-goers. A low garden wall running along Constitution Avenue and 17th Street will offer definition, identification, and visual separation between street traffic and the interior landscape. My duties during the first phase of this big project included the production of models, creating graphic reproductions for presentations and design studies, three dimensional topographical studies and putting together cost estimates, as well as preparing follow up documents in accordance with contractual obligations.

Commissioned by Tamdeen Group Project Data Schematic Design (SD) Design Development (DD) Architecture RTKL Architects

The Khiran Pearl City Marina is a big development project what includes Kuwait’s first high-end Outlet Mall, two high-rise residential towers, one furnished apartments tower, a marina to house over 900 boats, the biggest in Kuwait and a 5-star resort style hotel with an international spa component. A lot of thought and input has gone into landscaping design for the entire project which in itself will be an attraction for tourists and residents alike. A massive promenade covered with palms will create the pedestrian space between the mall and the marina. PWP worked hard to create a landscape link for the entire project.

Park Merced - re-landscaped public housing San Francisco, California, USA

Commissioned by City of San francisco, private investors Project Data Schematic Design (SD) Design Development (DD) Architecture SOM

The ParkMerced Master Plan will transform this 60-year old planned community into a vital, healthy neighborhood guided by integrated urban landscape ecology. Over the next 20 years the phased plan will revitalize the eight existing towers and replace low-rise buildings with a variety of new residential buildings. As the first step toward creating this vision, Phase 1 will be completed in the midst of the existing framework of streets and aging buildings. ParkMerced’s overall landscape master plan provides a strong framework for building a cohesive community. Elements of the whole should be expressed in each block in order to create the best environments within each phase. New and interesting public spaces within the blocks will encourage residents move about the community and engage in varied experiences throughout the phased development. Grading, amenity programming, temporary conditions, and large scale landscape design moves that span phase boundaries will be considered as the design is completed. My Duties in the Phases of (SD) and (DD) creating technical and illustrative drawings and i established a 3D-Model of the park for internal studies and public meetings.

PWP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECURE 17

Berkeley, California, USA

Commissioned by PWP Project Data Design competition

As a tradition in the Office they have a summer intern program every year for 8 weeks. At that time 4-8 interns from all over the US work in the Office and every year they make a Design competition of the offices open space for one week. All the proposals have to be presented in front of the entire Office. My proposal gave the place a strong identity as i integrated a red Frame into the space. Under the structure i planned a multi usable space which was transforming depending on the need of the office. A elevated hedge connected the sidewalk with the little plaza and integrated it better into the public life.

Geo Site Design

HSR - RAPPERSWIL 22

Vรถls, Italy

Subject Thesis Assessment & Grade very good / 5.5 (out of 6)

My goal in this project was to work with data generated by my drone survey and design with it. Initial situation: The area is about 4 ha (2.5 meadow, 1.5 forest) large private property. On it is currently an old farm building. There is a driveway to the property, but only up to the southern boundary of the property. The existing building structures are to be demolished in the next few years and replaced by an enlarged new building. The aim of this work is the creation of a master plan to answer the questions about the position of future building volumes and optimal development.

Approach / technologies: All used data of the processed area were collected independently in the course of the work. By using a drone, the terrain was measured and further data sets generated. This method of data collection in the analysis phase turned out to be very beneficial for understanding the landscape and the terrain around the perimeter. The combination of a high level of technical commitment and intensive creative work permits a work flow from the data acquisition to the finished data output for a GPS controlled construction machine.

Geo Site Design Vรถls, Italy

Result: The work focuses on a reduced number of design elements. The road, which represents the central drawing form, was modeled as gently as possible in the terrain. It was designed according to technical standards and very high design standards. All other elements connect to it and assign it several functions. Product of the work is a Land XML File which can be implemented by construction machines with GPS control.

Hamm 2040

HSR - RAPPERSWIL 26

Hamm, Germany

Subject Student competition (Schlaunwettbewerb 2016) Designstudio Placing Special award Assessment & Grade very good / 5.5 (out of 6)

Hamm fights with his identity search like so many cities in the Ruhr area. Hamm in 2040 should be the city of short distances public transport and slow traffic are put in the foreground. The entire city center should be car free. A tram should be reintroduced to better connect the surrounding districts with the center. The sustainable mobility concept enables smooth inter modality. The change between the various types of transport like train, bicycle, car sharing, bus or e bike will no longer be a barrier. Streets are no longer the only room for wheels of all kinds, but a „shared space“ for everyone. The new city gates function as traffic junctions in the outer districts, all means of transport converge there and it can be

easily changed. Our vision for public urban spaces in Hamm is to treat public life as a precious commodity and to focus on a wide range of different public spaces. Semi-public open spaces such as patios promote and provide both neighborly relationships and playgrounds for children and the opportunity to create communal gardens. High-level open spaces such as the green belt and the green areas along the Dattel Hamm canal serve as leisure areas for the entire urban population as well as for visitors from outside

Concept of ´public spaces´ Chur Chur, Switzerland

Subject Urban design studio Assessment & Grade very good / 5.5 (out of 6)

The agricultural area between the motorway and the Rheinquartier should serve the population of Chur as an island of recreation. The image of a green island is achieved through the ecological enhancement of the edge of the settlement. Aesthetic appreciation of agriculture as well as design interventions between the fields will make the area easier to experience and exploit. An improved route network links the settlement area with the island center around the mill, where various uses and recreational facilities are located and the open space experience is maximized. A district center is being developed with design interventions and offers the entire Rhein district a place with meeting point,

use and recreational functions. It serves as a stage of public life. The Plessurraum as the main cross-linking axis for the slow traffic as well as for the ecology has to be designed. Through this axis, the Schangg valley is connected to the Rhein via the city center, the railway station and the Rhein district. The design measures significantly increase the quality of these transit zones. The connection to the Rhein in both directions (Felsberg and Haldenstein) is guaranteed.

Mettau, Switzerland

Subject Landscape planning studio Assessment & Grade very good / 5.5 (out of 6)

The region of Mettau, a planned community of several villages and municipalities around the Mettauer valley, commissioned a regional recreation concept that embraces the cultural landscape and its sensitive habitats. The basic concept resolves the current conflicts caused by the individual dwellers and nature’s processes. With the establishment of five landscape layers - Local Landscape Models, Experience Produce, Ridgeway, Connecting Rivers and Hot Spots - speci

c targets and issues can more easily be addressed, derived, and implemented. The individual layers are aligned with the regional Landscape Development Plan, the local protection regulations, as well as the zoning plan and works to further supplements them. The Mettauer valley becomes an appealing recreation area for dwellers that offers locally developed attractions while also enhancing the overall landscape and its habitats.

Situation: The inner courtyard of an office block (Johnson&- Johnson) has to be re-designed because of an unhealthy previous planting. The courtyard is not accessible, but it should enhance the image of the company. Concept: The concept focus is the already existing bee house. The shrubs used are all honey plants in the bees’ most preferred colors white, yellow and purple. The concept aims at increasing the production of honey, which will be later offered in the company´s canteen. The whole courtyard is covered by a raster of clay columns, which serves as measuring device for the vegetation growth.

In spring the plants bloom on a wave-basis, from one side to the other of the courtyard, creating a continuous movement and change. During summer the columns are completely covered by vegetation. In fall and winter the vegetation shrinks and it is possible to observe the design of the columns, their different heights and the wave-like disposition.

A plaza for Schaffhausen Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Subject Design studio Placing very good / 5 (out of 6) Situation The town Schaffhausen (CH) called for a design concept for two squares in the historic city center. Currently the two squares are parking lots that jeopardize the image of the town and the quality of life of inhabitants and tourists. Concept: The town is missing a central square that could serve as meeting point for inhabitants and tourists. This is to be set in the area of the churchyard. The aim is to create a central meeting point that assure a better integration of the touristic routes of the town. The school building in the middle of the area has to be removed in order to gain more space and to enhance the visibility of the castle of Munot. The building is replaced by a simple and sculptural fountain, that will become a social point of interest. The flooring is designed according to the sev-

eral flooring patterns of the historic city center. Every flooring resembles an historical period of the town. The floorings flow from the five main streets into the square, where they collide and intersect to create a new pattern that merges on the fountain, reinforcing its centrality.
