Welcome I am honored to welcome you to the 2019 Offshore Technology Conference, one of the world’s premiere trade shows that brings together energy professionals who are dedicated to improving offshore resources while addressing environmental concerns.
The Netherlands is a global oil and gas hub. We work with partners around the world, including here in the United States, to find innovative and sustainable solutions that will fuel the energy needs of an ever-growing global population. We are working hard to meet energy demand while also reducing emissions and are dedicated to advancing the transition to renewable energy sources. The challenge is real. An important way of advancing the energy transition is by incorporating offshore wind technology. The United States’ offshore wind market is concentrated in the Northeast and growing rapidly with potential on the West Coast. It is worth noting that Shell recently purchased offshore wind leases off the coast of Massachusetts and New Jersey in collaboration with other partners. Many other Dutch companies are in or ready to enter the market. The Dutch position in offshore wind is highly regarded through its expertise in offshore engineering, craftsmanship, and marine operations. Collaboration on offshore wind infrastructure can bring benefits in the form of a faster development of renewable energy, the sharing of knowledge and data among diverse partners, and more truly innovative

projects that can be designed to advance energy as well as environmental goals. The Netherlands has been Europe’s second largest gas producer for decades, though that is starting to change. Since we expect demand to remain stable, we foresee a demand gap for imports to fill. The Netherlands’ infrastructure for both gas exports and imports remains, both through pipelines and our LNG import terminal in Rotterdam, so we are confident the Netherlands will remain an important gas hub. OTC has always been where the market comes together to discuss oil prices, supply, and demand. Of course it is the place to be to network with clients on global oil and gas. Visitors from all over the world come to Houston for this conference, making it a premiere venue to explore opportunities. New techniques and more efficient production methods will be discussed and presented, and innovative technology will be on display. The Dutch have always been loyal visitors to OTC. We traditionally have one of the biggest pavilions featuring a diversity of participants, including multinationals, small and
medium-sized contractors, large manufacturers, suppliers, and more. I’m pleased this year is no different. You can meet with more than 40 Dutch stakeholders in our 1000-square-meter Holland Pavilion, or one of the many more companies that are presenting outside the pavilion. The Holland Pavilion has great diversity in oil and gas exploration and production, and a strong focus on cost efficiency, energy innovation, and sustainability. We look forward to meeting you and talking about opportunities to create new partnerships and strengthen those that already exist. Henne Schuwer Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United States of America.

Welcome to the IRO Holland Pavilion
Meet the Dutch Transition, one word that says it all. It is obvious that, in order to keep up with the current developments in the oil and gas industry and offshore renewable industry, we need to keep adapting to a different way of working in ever changing and unpredictable geopolitical circumstances. Despite of the challenging times, the Dutch offshore sector has proven to be able to cope with the difficult conditions through chain cooperation, strong entrepreneurship and innovation.
Over the last 50 years an extensive network of pipelines, platforms and subsea installations has been developed in the North Sea to produce oil and gas from offshore fields. As more and more small fields become empty, decommissioning and the dismantling of platforms that are no longer used are becoming increasingly important and available for the next step. Since more small fields become empty, decommissioning and the dismantling of platforms that are no longer used are becoming increasingly important and available for the next step. Next to permanent removal in an efficient and effective way, innovations are under development to enable reuse of existing infrastructure for oil and gas for future use in energy storage and power balancing offshore. Old infrastructure can be used for energy or CO2 storage (depleted fields), energy conversion with Power to Gas or Gas to Wire (platforms) or energy transport and storage (Hydrogen). With the innovative developments, we have laid the foundation for a stronger international competitive position, from which we can benefit in the further strengthening of the market. Nonetheless, oil and gas will continue to play an important role in the global energy mix for decades to
6
2019
come. The Dutch suppliers are also leaders in the field of clean and safe conventional energy production and are way ahead of our international competitors. Developments are not only taking place in the North Sea, but also in the Americas area. Mexico’s Energy Reform of 2013 has set in motion a series of changes that continue to revolutionize the country’s oil and gas industry. With vast untapped hydrocarbon reserves, increasing demand from a growing population and economy and a new regulatory framework, Mexico is quickly becoming one of the most exciting markets for oil and gas companies along the entire supply chain. Also, the developments in the Brazilian offshore energy sector are still heading in the right direction. Petrobras anticipates growing its oil production in Brazil next year due to the start-up of five new production systems this year and three more to go in 2019. In total Petrobras will invest a total of 84.1 billion by 2023 in order to increase the country’s production of oil and gas. After being internationally one of the top 5 suppliers for more than 40 years
in the field of upstream Oil and Gas activities the Dutch are ready and best equipped for further development of the Gulf of Mexico, Offshore Guyana and Offshore Brazil amongst others. It is obvious that, with the transition in progress, the Dutch supply chain is quickly adapting to new market conditions. Although the coming years will be challenging years for our industry, they will be full of opportunities both in the field of conventional energy and sustainable energy. Whilst our IRO members will keep focusing on cost-efficiency, sustainability and innovation in conventional oil and gas developments on a global scale, the energy transition presents us with vast opportunities to maintain our position as a frontrunner in the global energy industry. GustoMSC delivers multifunctional lifting tool with highest level of safety
Increased reach capabilities for ‘Chela’ In March 2018 Maersk Drilling, the world leading provider of high-efficiency drilling services, awarded GustoMSC the first order for the uniquely designed multifunctional arm ‘Chela’. This was a landmark event for the Dutch design & engineering company that further accelerated Chela’s development. Mid Q2 2019 ‘Chela’ is going to be installed on the ‘Maersk Invincible’ (a GustoMSC CJ70 design), while operating offshore in the giant oilfield Valhall in the southern Norwegian North Sea for AkerBP. By using this multifunctional lifting tool Maersk Drilling puts herself in an advantageous position, since ‘Chela’ significantly eases safe material handling underneath the cantilever which reduces the total well construction time considerably. A unique feature that directly addresses the call for cost reduction from operators.
The uniquely designed multifunctional arm ‘Chela’.
8
2019
‘Chela’ was fabricated in the IJmuiden facility of Breman.
‘Cooperation with Maersk Drilling and AkerBP allowed us to get closer to the ultimate and mutual goal: the highest level of safety and efficiency at sea.’ Sibren Bonte, Project Manager Equipment GustoMSC
The most striking enhancement introduced into ‘Chela’ is the increased reach capability under the cantilever, further improving the material handling capabilities and safety on the wellhead area. GustoMSC will deliver ‘Chela’ (classified by DNV GL) to Maersk as a fully outfitted and tested crane, complete with a dual winch system for extreme safe operations above live wells, anti-collision system and vertical rack & pinion travel system that enables the crane for reaching the main deck. The actual offshore installation procedure of ‘Chela’ is quite straight forward. Due to the efficient foundation interface with the cantilever on board the ‘Maersk Invincible’, only limited modification to the existing cantilever structure is required for the foundation of ‘Chela’. In addition Chela is also designed to be easily dismountable, and if the same integration points and type of jumper stations are used, the crane can be shared among different rigs
within any rig fleet, increasing flexibility for the operator and contractor. Step change
Designed to achieve a high level of safety, the fully electrically-driven ‘Chela’ offers an extra hand in operations. Due to its crablike motion characteristics, it can reach below the cantilever as well as elevate towards the main deck, providing crane access to an area traditionally blocked by the cantilever when drilling on conventional set-ups. It can transfer containers and other pieces of equipment from the main deck of the rig to underneath the cantilever and vice versa in a single lift operation. “We are grateful that Maersk Drilling awarded us this order and has shown its confidence in ‘Chela’. Prior to going into the fabrication, installation and commissioning phase, GustoMSC together with Maersk Drilling and their client AkerBP, have been closely working together to further optimize ‘Chela’. This cooperation allowed us to
get closer to the ultimate and mutual goal: the highest level of safety and efficiency at sea,” says Sibren Bonte, Project Manager Equipment at GustoMSC. “The technology we engineered is a substantial step change in increased efficiency on wellhead platform logistics. As ‘Chela’ provides under-cantilever crane coverage at the highest level of safety, there is no need to shut in wells when a lifting sequence is performed by ‘Chela’. The crane, capable to lift 22 tonnes at 21 m radius underneath the cantilever at any position, does not obstruct any wellhead deck space. Both are value drivers for Maersk Drilling and AkerBP.” Optional feature
Chela’s moveable arm creates a sturdy hoisting point underneath the cantilever, enabling wireline operations away from the well centre of the drill floor. It thus provides a huge advantage in development drilling, infill drilling and plug and abandonment operations.
2019

The wireline operations can take place offline, on any other well, while the derrick is engaged with normal drilling operations. This optional feature of ‘Chela’ results in significant savings in rig days for plug and abandonment operations that can amount to around 15% compared to the conventional procedure, by providing offline activities such as logging and cementing that normally need to be performed in sequence on the drill floor. Automation
Every G20 certified crane operator can operate ‘Chela’ after training. She is controlled with a handheld remote, allowing the operator to be in the optimal position to oversee and control the operations at all times.

The arm is supplied with an anticollision procedure to ensure that the load and crane boom do not collide with obstacles such as the riser at well center or topside modules below and aft of the rig.
been doing business with Breman for 15 years now. They have carried out the steelworks and outfitting of many projects and on each occasion they proved to be an exceptionally competent company.”
Support
Bright future
Commencing fabrication in Q2 2018, GustoMSC used the latest simulation techniques in fast tracking high specification equipment development and verification. The company found support from several Dutch suppliers in achieving the fast track delivery required by Maersk, especially JB Systems from Vlaardingen for E&I and Breman Machinery from Genemuiden as long term partner for high quality steel construction and assembly. Sibren Bonte: “We have
At the time of writing ‘Chela’ has not yet been installed on the ‘Maersk Invincible’, and it is a bit premature to confirm that ‘Chela’ is as revolutionary as GustoMSC claims. But according to Project Manager Sibren Bonte ‘Chela’ is an absolute game changer. “We have high expectations for the future. A number of operators have already visited the Breman facility in IJmuiden to take a closer look at the crane and they were all impressed by the performance of ‘Chela’.”
Zero HSSE incidents
Safeway passes 10,000 safe personnel transfers at Shell Bonga FPSO As from March 6, 2019, the unique Safeway motion compensated offshore access system of the Dutch Van Aalst Group completed over 10,000 safe personnel transfers for Shell Nigeria Exploration & Production Company (SNEPCo) during a maintenance campaign on board the Bonga FPSO (Floating Production, Storage & Offloading).
To perform this maintenance and inspection project of the giant FPSO, the unique 28 metre long walk-towork Seagull-type is installed on the 95-metre long multifunctional subsea vessel Olympic Triton, owned by Olympic Subsea ASA, Norway. Specifically for this Bonga-project the DP2 diesel electric ROV support vessel has been chartered by Temile Development Company, an indigenous shipping company operating in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. As both the Olympic Triton and the Bonga FPSO are vessels with individual movements in the water, the innovative and advanced control system of the Safeway Seagull was able to perform the Ship-to-Ship W2W operations as the world’s first supplier without modifications or additional control units on the FPSO landing point.
The FPSO varies in draft due to its normal operations. The Safeway Seagull’s standard ten (10) meter vertical height adjustment of the gangway allowed the 10,000 workers and their tools to be safely transferred from the Olympic Triton to the Bonga FPSO and vice versa at a spectacular pace, leading to an increase in operational efficiency. The giant Bonga floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel is in use at Shell’s Bonga oilfield (discovered in 1993 and with a life of 20 years), which lies 120 km off the coast of the Niger Delta, covering an area of 60km². The vessel, whichbecame operational in 2004, is permanently installed in water depths ranging from 1,000m to 1,125m. First oil production was made in November 2005.
The Olympic Triton Safeway Team received the following congratulation from SNEPCo: ‘Excellent job well done by the Olympic Triton Safeway Team for achieving over 10,000 Safeway personnel crossing using the Gangway with zero HSSE incident. The gangway is used for safe access of the project teams (Fabric Maintenance campaign and the in-water Survey IWS & ROV inspection team) residing on the Olympic Triton to the Bonga FPSO and vice versa. The Safeway Team have exhibited safety leadership and demonstrated effective collaboration with the Olympic Triton’s captain and his marine crew, with support from the Bonga Marine Team, Bonga HeliAdmin, Bonga Safety team and the Project CSRs (including Nnamdi Nwamaghinna & Izuchukwu Ogazi) in line with our winning ways of working behaviour to achieve this milestone. Thank you all. Well done! Keep up the good work.’

Vryhof’s Managing Director Leopoldo Bello:
‘Greater collaboration defines future of relationships between main and sub-contractors’ Vryhof, the market’s trusted global provider of customer-focused anchoring and mooring solutions, underlines the importance of a partnership in fulfilling future mooring requirements. Based on his belief that greater collaboration will define the future of many main contractor and sub-contractor relationships in the offshore industry Managing Director Leopoldo Bello describes the advantages of such a project partnership with major EPCI contractor.
In Leopoldo Bello’s own words: “Most offshore construction providers have been hit hard by an unprecedented crisis in the oil & gas industry over the past 4 years. Engineering teams have been reduced and as a result one of the major casualties has been mooring installation expertise. Signs of life are once again emerging as we observe a slow increase in the number of tender applications for offshore engineering and construction projects. We firmly believe that working together with Vryhof as a mooring
12
2019
procurement and installation-capable subcontractor will definitely improve the chances of winning these challenging assignments. By combining their vessels and specific engineering capabilities with our engineering qualities and mooring expertise in a single team, innovative and cost-efficient mooring solutions can be provided.” Another competitive advantage of cooperating with Vryhof is the company’s ability to undertake procurement and project management. Clients also praise and appreciate
Vryhof’s fabulous asset integrity management programme that allows them to benefit from economies of scale. Bello continued: “As Vryhof we have a trust-based and volumebased relationship with mooring components suppliers. We keep costs down. In our case, volume not only means a better price for the end client but it also results in higher quality and quality assurance. As well as trust, there is of course also the matter of competence. When we buy chain, we know what we are buying, and when it comes to checking quality, we have our own team of experts who understand chain making.”
systems to the WindFloat Atlantic Wind Farm off the coast of Portugal, the world’s first commercial floating wind farm. At the same time, Vryhof’s three businesses – Deep Sea Mooring, Vryhof Anchors and MoorLink – have announced the awarding of a series of landmark deals from the international oil & gas sector, too. Utility sector
In real terms, Vryhof has already been delivering permanent mooring systems to the oil & gas sector since the early nineteen seventies, and more recently total mooring solutions to the renewables industry. In both market segments, Vryhof has successfully completed numerous challenging assignments, and has demonstrated its capability to moor any type of floater.
One sector that is revitalising its importance on the market for offshore floating terminals is the utility sector. Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) have proliferated since 2015, with many countries intending to switch to a cleaner and increasingly cheaper fuel than oil and coal. Power plants are under construction everywhere, in the Mediterranean, South East Asia, Australia, India, the Middle East and West Africa. In certain instances, however, onshore power plants are planned to be built fairly close to the sea. In these cases, the process of LNG redemption can be carried out offshore, on board a permanently moored Floating Storage and Regasification Unit.
In August last year, Vryhof contributed to the complete mooring system for the Kincardine Floating Wind Farm located around 15 kilometres to the southeast of Aberdeen in Scotland. In early 2019, a further agreement was signed to supply three full scope mooring
LNG receiving terminals that use FSRUs can be installed at a lower cost and fabricated within a shorter period than conventional onshore receiving terminals and are viewed as an effective means of building LNG receiving capacity in emerging countries.
New market
Vryhof delivered a storm mooring system to keep the FSU safe and secure in event of a heavy storm.
They represent huge advantages over an onshore import terminal. The remaining challenge for the electricity company is: how do we set up a mooring arrangement for the FSRU? Engineering companies with knowledge of civil engineering work on land can propose an expensive existing mooring system; on the other hand, the FSRU owner can opt to enter into a project partnership with a mooring system supplier such as Vryhof, for the delivery and certification of a customised anchoring and mooring solution. Vryhof’s Project Director Senol Ozmutlu commented: “More and more offshore operators and major contractors are opting for our cost-efficient mooring solutions, and we are delighted that the young FSRU industry is embracing our innovative and comprehensive mooring solutions, as well. Vryhof was in fact the first mooring specialist to operate in the utility market, and to date we have completed the majority of FSRU projects, worldwide. The awarding of so many projects demonstrates our leading position in the international mooring industry. By engaging Vryhof at -an early stage of a project, we are able to help energy companies improve their project economics considerably.” Storm Mooring System in Malta
The Republic of Malta, located in the Mediterranean Sea, has traditionally been reliant on diesel and heavy fuel oil for its power generation; these facilities no longer satisfy present-day European environmental legislation and provide power in an inefficient and expensive manner. To address the environmental requirements and to create a more efficient and bettervalue power supply, a liquid-naturalgas-to-power project was developed by ElectroGas Malta Consortium (EGM) as a significant contribution to Malta’s future energy strategy. The project consists of the construction of a new 205MW Siemens combined
2019
13
cycle gas turbine power station, known as Delimara 4. Another part of the project is the conversion of an LNG tanker into a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) to be permanently berthed near shore, close to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. The FSU delivers Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) via a newly constructed jetty, for onshore regasification. As part of this project, EGM needed a Storm Mooring System to keep the FSU safe and secure in the event of a heavy storm. Despite a very tight time window, Vryhof took up the challenge. Senol Ozmutlu explained: “We were given only three months to deliver a fully certified system, so we in turn challenged EGM by proposing a totally different solution, but in sufficient detail to enable them to make a quick and final decision. This included all the necessary technical details, as well as pricing information. Without a doubt, the most important benefit of our offer was the fact that thanks to our fast delivery time, EGM was able to put the power plant on stream one year sooner than expected.”
14
2019
Within this project, Vryhof worked in partnership with the Norwegian subsea contractor Ocean Installer. The installation of the complete mooring lines proposed by Vryhof had to be undertaken in a bay area with water depths ranging from 14 to 17 metres, but with heavy marine traffic. The permitted work area was so narrow that the only way to tackle the problem was to employ Vryhof’s STEVTENSIONER®. No other installation method is as well suited to such a shallow bay location, since its design involves a vertical pull to induce more than twice the horizontal pull. Furthermore, the work area taken up by the construction support vessel Normand Pioneer was cut by as much as 75 %; a decisive benefit in this particular situation. Looking back on the collaboration with Ocean Installer and Vryhof, Catherine Halpin, Commercial Director of ElectroGas Malta said: “The successful completion of the Storm Mooring System was absolutely essential to the overall success of our entire facility.
During stormy weather, we can now move the FSU away from the jetty into a safe area, with minimal obstructions.” First ever FSRU project in Europe
Vryhof in fact completed its first FSRU mooring project in 2011, near the port of Livorno on the western coast of Tuscany, Italy. Although Malta and Livorno are both located in the Mediterranean Sea, the two projects differ considerably. The Livorno project involved a Floating Regasification Unit that had to be moored 12 miles off the coast of Livorno, in a water depth of 120 metres, and connected to shore by a 29 km-long buried export pipeline for transferring the gas to the national distribution system. The Livorno FSRU has a storage capacity of 137,000 cubic meters of LNG and a production capacity of 3.75 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The Livorno FSRU was the first LNG re-gasification unit ever moored on a turret mooring system, which relies on 6 mooring lines and its foundations (STEVPRIS®Mk6), in combination with
a STEVTENSIONER®. Senol Ozmutlu explained: “Livorno is a typical example of the benefits of the STEVTENSIONER® system. In this instance, with a 6-line mooring system, we simultaneously tensioned two anchors opposite each other, effectively cutting the actual installation time by a subsea support vessel in half, and in total saving 3 days. The related cost savings were between 30 and 40 %; very substantial, by anyone’s standard.” All in all, the installation of the anchors in the soft clay seabed soil including the tensioning operations took just 6 days. Bay of Bengal
In August 2018, Excelerate Energy Bangladesh completed the commissioning of its Moheshkhali Floating LNG (MLNG) terminal, the first LNG import facility in Bangladesh. The new terminal will enable Petrobangla, the state-owned Bangladesh Oil, Gas & Mineral Corporation, to procure enough
LNG to increase natural supply to the country by 20 percent. Vryhof successfully supplied the hold back anchors essential for the operation in a situation where demanding sea conditions and monsoon weather patterns can present unique challenges. Shortly afterwards, Petrobangla developed a similar FSRU project to support the nation’s goal of achieving 17 MTPA of gas imports, by 2030. Summit LNG Terminal is currently developing a LNG receiving terminal that will also make use of a FSRU. Construction work on the terminal, located only six kilometres off Moheshkali Island, was started at the end of 2017, and commercial operations are expected to begin in Q3 2019. Vryhof has supplied similar hold back anchors for this second FSRU. Trusted provider
Bello concluded: “At Vryhof we strive to be the trusted partner for installers and designers responsible for developing cost-efficient,
robust mooring solutions for oil and gas, renewable, terminals and for large-scale fish farms applications. Together with our clients we are redefining technology, applications, partnership structures, contractual schemes and business models.” “We do not only supply equipment; we provide solutions. Vryhof’s combined capabilities are used to working for super majors. Certainly following the merger between Vryhof Anchors and Deep Sea Mooring several years ago, we have succeeded in leveraging our capabilities and have become bigger and stronger. In doing so we have strengthened our leading position as a one-stop shop that combines mooring solutions with the supply of equipment, services and logistics. By making use of these capabilities, designers and installation contractors can stand out from the crowd. Vryhof is the ideal partner for attracting lump sum contracts on capital projects in which mooring plays an important role!”

DEME Offshore has a full orderbook for ‘Apollo’ with a variety of projects in both the renewables and oil and gas market. Soon after the christening the vessel was mobilised for pre-piling works at the Moray East offshore wind farm in the UK. After the installing of these 300 pre-piles, the next challenge will be the installation of turbines for the Seamade offshore wind farm project. In the months before the christening ceremony the ‘Apollo’ already executed several projects. Amongst others she has successfully decommissioned the unmanned Halfweg platform for
Petrogas in the Dutch sector of the North Sea and installed a small gas installation as well. DECOM
In the meantime DEME Offshore has received an extension notice from AF Offshore Decom for a current frame agreement to include future removal and disposal of up to four additional platforms for a client in the UK North Sea. DEME Offshore’s scope will be to provide the marine services for the removal of up to four platforms with a total weight of approx. 4,500 tons. This brings the total platforms to be removed to 11 by DEME Offshore.

IHC was able to strengthen its proposition owing to the flexibility it was able to apply to its finance model. This resulted in benefits that it was able to pass on to Shanghai Salvage and increase its competitiveness. Flexibility was also guaranteed due to
IHC’s local presence in Tianjin, China. After winning the tender, IHC refined the system’s conceptual arrangement, considering aspects such as integration with the vessel, and importantly, the safety of operation. Some of the key components are being manufactured in China, while
the tensioners and key subsystems will be built in Europe.
system also designed, engineered and built by IHC.
The project is hugely significant for IHC, which has been active in the Chinese market for more than 30 years. The company has positioned itself as a knowledge partner to contractors in the country and is seeking to continually collaborate with customers in the region.
Subsea 7 was looking for an addition to its fleet based on the Seven Oceans reel-lay vessel that IHC had already built for them. The content of the tender included an option for bidders to provide a custom-built solution.
Realising potential
Another reason for the significance of the Shanghai Salvage project is the impact it had on another contract later won by IHC. This was for the design and build of a reel-lay vessel capable of installing complex rigid flowlines for Subsea 7. IHC had previously delivered eight vessels to Subsea 7, but this was the first to be equipped with a pipelay
IHC put all of its efforts into a custom design and a fully integrated proposal, focusing on the integration of the UK-designed lay system and the vessel designed from The Netherlands. It demonstrated that a custom-built vessel had far better performance and didn’t have to cost much more. Subsea 7 wanted the most effective lay system within the constraints of the dimensions of the vessel. This was an interesting process
between IHC’s design teams in the UK and The Netherlands and the company wasn’t afraid to experiment. In the end, IHC was able to maximise the possibilities within the vessel design. IHC’s proposal incorporated several innovative features, making the vessel one of its most technologically advanced to date. Within the ship’s compact dimensions, space is cleverly utilised with creative positioning of three engine rooms and the main reel, efficient use of the superstructure and a low-profile pipelay ramp. Benchmark
Additionally, IHC has been awarded a contract to modify McDermott International Inc.’s pipelay and construction vessel Amazon. This includes the delivery of an innovative and complete J-lay system.
2019
19
IHC will be responsible for the management of the modification project, from the design through to the integration of the new equipment. This includes the build and installation of the IHC-designed and patented J-lay system, and the removal and replacement of the equipment and commissioning. Through the Amazon project, IHC is aiming to set a new benchmark for installing a multi-joint J-lay system in a vessel of this size. Its novel approach is expected be a gamechanger in the market and the J-lay system will be able to handle every variety of pipe.
developing the final specifications. On the Amazon project, the use of existing proven technology and process automation, combined with early collaboration with the system designers, meant that McDermott was assured of a highly efficient and cost-effective asset.
The Amazon will then provide a key enabling asset within the McDermott fleet and allow it to compete on a global basis for major deepwater/ ultra-deepwater projects. Forefront
Comparing and contrasting these projects draws up some interesting conclusions. Shanghai Salvage was a tightly controlled tender process, during which IHC had to respond to a detailed specification. However, IHC could demonstrate that it had understood the customer’s queries and met all of its requirements. By contrast, the Subsea 7 tender was managed in such a way that gave IHC more opportunity to innovate in
All projects highlight IHC’s remarkable creativity as a provider of solutions for complex integrated pipelaying systems and vessels. They also show the full extent of its capabilities when it is challenged to come up with an optimum solution and explain why IHC remains at the forefront of the market for pipelaying systems and integrated vessels.

Developed by Bakker Sliedrecht
First generator protection system for dual fuel ships Bakker Sliedrecht has been the first to develop a generator protection system (CDG-protection) for dual fuel vessels which operate with a dynamic positioning system (DP) 2 and 3. The system has been successfully tested by classification society DNV GL.
The Common Diesel Generator protection system of the system integrator developed will be deployed for the first time on an offshore heavy lift vessel, which is currently under construction. The ship is equipped with a power plant of 4 generators of 10 MW each, which run on both diesel and LNG. Generator protection is essential to prevent a blackout or failure in the power plant, causing the ship to lose its position during operations. Vessels that sail in DP 2 or 3 mode have to maintain their position at all times, even in case of failures or malfunctions in the fuel system, a diesel, a generator, the switchboard, or the control system. To prevent such malfunctions power plants are usually divided into independent isles. However, this makes generators run inefficient which is undesirable cost- and environmentally wise. That is why ships nowadays prefer to operate with generators in parallel operation.
To prevent these from interfering with each other, a generator safety system is necessary. Bakker Sliedrecht’s CDG-protection system uses software to detect and disable an ‘unhealthy’ generator before it can affect the ‘healthy’ generators, making the entire power plant unstable. For power plants equipped with dual fuel generators, this is extra complex because duel fuel engines behave differently than diesel engines and can unexpectedly switch from gas to diesel. Heavy lift vessel
Without generator protection, a complex DP vessel will therefore not receive a certificate to operate in DP2 or DP3 closed bus mode. Bakker Sliedrecht started in 2017 with the further development of its own CDG protection system for complex work vessels. The system is now so far developed that it can be deployed in the heavy lift vessel. During the last months, it has been extensively tested in a test set-up of four generators.
The system has been tested against the requirements as formulated in the ‘DNV GL Rules: DNV-RP-D102 closed busties’ with underlying rules ‘Part 4: Ch8 Electrical installations & Ch9 Control and monitoring systems’. The system has passed these tests with flying colours even under dual fuel conditions. Classification
According to the classification society, the heavy lift vessel will be the first dual fuel DP2 ship to be classified with a generator protection system. ”So you can say that we are groundbreaking. Our technology will prevent the ship from getting out of position,” says Paul Bracké, technology manager of Bakker Sliedrecht. ”That requires not only the first dual fuel generator protection system, but also a good power management and zone security system, including an experienced operator. Bakker Sliedrecht was able to combine all the required knowledge and has therefore achieved a world-class result.”

Pioneering Spirit lifts nearly 26,000 tonnes
Record-breaking lift completes the Johan Sverdrup field centre
Three days - that’s what it took to lift four of the last pieces in the Johan Sverdrup puzzle into place - the two final platform topsides, a bridge and a flare stack.
“Now we are in the process of concluding the installation campaign for the first phase of construction of Johan Sverdrup. Putting the final building blocks of this gigantic project into place is important to ensure start-up of the field as planned in November this year,” says Trond Bokn, senior vice president for Johan Sverdrup. The two final platform topsides were installed using the heavy lift vessel Pioneering Spirit’s single lift technology. The processing platform lift – nearly 26,000 tonnes – set a new lifting record offshore, and was
22
2019
carried out on Tuesday morning in only four hours with a clearance of just 25 metres from the rest of the field centre. The lift of the utility and living quarters topside, 18,000 tonnes, was completed early Friday morning in just 3.5 hours. From the start of the lifting operation of the processing platform on Tuesday morning until the living quarters topsides had been lifted into place on Friday it took less than 72 hours. During the same period, the final flare stack and the bridge that links the processing platform to the drilling platform were lifted into place by the
heavy lift vessel Thialf. The final bridge that will connect the utility and living quarters topside to the rest of the field centre will be installed in the next possible weather window. “We have completed the heaviest lift ever performed offshore. Over the course of just three days, we have lifted almost 47,000 tonnes into place. And the whole process was completed safely and efficiently, without harm to people or the environment,” says Ståle Hanssen, responsible for engineering, installation and commissioning in the Johan Sverdrup project.
The processing platform lift was the heaviest lift ever performed offshore. “This was all made possible by in-depth planning and, not least, a high level of precision in execution in collaboration with our suppliers and partners,” says Hanssen. The installation and completion phase offshore at Johan Sverdrup started with installation of the jacket for the riser platform in August 2017. After that, an additional three steel jackets, four topsides, two bridges, two flare stacks, 200 km of power cables, and more than 400 km of
pipelines have been put in place. More than 2000 vessel days associated with installation and marine activities have been carried out so far, without serious harm to people or the environment. “We are proud of what the Johan Sverdrup project has accomplished together with our partners and suppliers. At the same time, we’re not finished just yet. A lot of work remains, but with the installation campaign completed, we are on track
to start production in November,” says Bokn. The first item on the agenda is hook-up, testing and commissioning of the two final topsides. This will be followed by testing and ensuring that all four platforms – and the field centre as a whole – function as a single unit. Completing the tie-back of the eight pre-drilled production wells on the field to the drilling platform will also come in addition to this.

Safe passenger and load transfer
Introduction of new way of offshore access Rotterdam-based LIFT2WORK developed, produced and offers a new way of offshore access by lifting to work. The OPTS (Offshore Passenger Transfer System) is an excellent tool to access wind turbine platforms, oil and gas platforms and other sea going vessels or structures. The system has the ability to move freely 2×200° with a reach of 24m horizontally, and more than 20m vertically above the ground/deck. It can also drop to 6m below the level of the deck/quay (for example) for rescue purposes etc.
The OPTS is a fully Dutch designed and built product. that can transfer a limited number of persons from one position to another, whether it be fixed or mobile it does not matter. A smooth and seamless transportation is guaranteed. A full hydraulically compensated system ensures save transfer from a moving vessel or barge to an offshore structure. With an arm length of 10m and a basic footprint of 8’ x 8’ (2440mm x 2440mm) the OPTS can easily be integrated into a deck construction. The available deck mounting frames provide a fast and painless mounting possibility, and due to their light but strong and rigid construction, enables quick, easy and safe lifting and transport options. The offshore access system can also be used to lift goods and tools with or without heave and/ or motion compensation.
24
2019
Features of the OPTS are: • Low weight 15 ton; • Very short mobilization in one day; • Easy transport One 40” container and plug & play; • Multi-function for passenger transfer, load lifting up till 2000kg, rescue and firefighting, FPSO access and decommissioning support working under deck. The OPTS is fully commissioned and certified by DNVGL under the ST of 378 and 358 as crane and as gangway.

Managing Operational Expectations
Full Mission Bridge Simulators Many design choices for Floating Offshore Installation are driven by expected operational performance. Design studies help to understand operability limits, but real life performance depends on mariners and agreements between owner and operator. MARIN’s clients increasingly use Full Mission Bridge Simulators to bring all parties and expertises together to establish operational procedures and evaluate weather limits.
Recent and ongoing projects use this combination of design and operational studies to understand the limits of their offloading operation. The first phase development includes a subsea production system and a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. The directional weather conditions allow for a spread moored FPSO maintaining a heading into the waves, wind and currents. Tugs
Offloading is planned with conventional oil tankers in a tandem configuration. The vessels are connected by a hawser which assumes a direction relative to the FPSO and the tanker. Several tugs are available for the operation to handle the hose and maintain a tension in the hawser and thus a safe separation distance between the tanker and the FPSO. The tugs can influence the heading of the tanker, which changes the environmental loads on the tanker and the resulting loads in the hawser. Many different solutions are possible on paper, but not all of them are practical to mariners. Feedback
First the limiting weather conditions were selected from a large amount of numerical simulations in which the tugs were controlled with autopilots.
26
2019
Since forces of wind, wave and current sometimes cancel each other and at other times align to cause large loads in the hawser, associated weather conditions had to be studied. This results in a strong focus on probabilities and mathematics. To combine this hydrodynamic knowledge with nautical experience and to involve both owner and operator in the conversation about practical limits, selected weather conditions were evaluated with manoeuvring simulations.
The full mission bridge simulations were executed in MARIN’s Houston office and provided an understanding of the operational offloading limits and demonstrated differences between the solutions of the tug algorithm used in the desktop study and the mooring master on the bridge. The bridge simulator provides a great communication tool for mariners and designers. This cooperation provides feedback from mariners into the design and improves the operational guidance to the field.
