EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL AT PETERS VALLEY SCHOOL OF CRAFT Peters Valley School of Craft is located within the picturesque Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. This setting creates a unique opportunity for immersion learning. Nestled in the midst of the beauty are state of the art studios with workshops run by professional artists from around the country. Each studio is managed by a Department Head or Seasonal Artist Fellow, assisted by a volunteer studio assistant. A typical 5-day workshop session begins on Friday at 9:00am with check-in between 8:15 and 8:45am at the office. Students may arrive the evening before if staying on campus and dinner is available for purchase in the Dining Hall. Classes continue through Tuesday, running 9am to 5pm each day. Studios are generally open at night until about 10pm (this varies by studio) if students would like to continue to work. Studio clean-up takes place at 3pm on the last day of the workshop. Participants range in age from 18 to 80, beginner through advanced, from all walks of life. All studios break for meals at the same time and everyone comes together to share in their experience. Visiting other studios in the evening is encouraged and Friday night instructor presentations give everyone an incredible insight into the process and work of all of the visiting artists. Weekly auctions are held on Mondays at 1pm and all of the money raised goes to support the studio assistants while raising money to purchase new equipment for the studios. As the former hamlet of Bevans, our dormitories, studios, dining hall, office and gallery are housed in mostly historic farm houses and structures. Peters Valley School of Craft is committed to being accessible to all of our students. However, the terrain at the Valley is natural and some of the historic buildings are only partially accessible. Paths and driveways are not paved. If you need special assistance, please indicate your needs with your workshop application. At least two weeks notice must be given when requesting special assistance so that we have time to accommodate your needs. Beginners at the Forge John Huckins May 16 - 17 Explore all basic skills needed to pursue the craft of blacksmithing in this introductory level class. You will learn about coal fire management, hammer control and forging techniques such as drawing out, upsetting, punching, slitting, and drifting. You can expect to complete a small project that has samples of several techniques. Beginner Tuition: $300 Studio/Materials Fee: $60 Beginner’s Blacksmithing Sam Salvati May 23 - 24 This workshop will provide you with a wonderful introduction into the amazing world of blacksmithing. Participants will learn the basic techniques from tapers to scrolls, bending, forming, hot punching and drifting, hot cutting, basics of tool usage and selection from hammers to tongs to anvils and vises! Expect to leave with a baseline understanding of hot forging of steel, coal forge maintenance and tool use. Beginner Tuition: $300 Studio/Materials Fee: $60 Intro to Blacksmithing through Forging Multiples Andy Upright & Ann Klicka May 29 - June 2 Whether creating an object for production or an architectural element, creating multiples is a founding principle for the blacksmith. In this workshop participants will pick, explore and forge a shape. Techniques to be covered include tending a coal fire, tapering, spreading, upsetting, bending, cutting, punching, slitting, and drifting. By exploring different paths to achieve similar ends, diversity in scale, and nuance in shape, participants will learn basic hand hammer skills. Beginner Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $85

Introduction to Bladesmithing Matthew Parkinson June 5 - 9 Participants will learn the fundamentals of bladesmithing including; forging the blade to shape, heat treating, grinding, finishing, polishing the blade and finally crafting a handle. Many styles and methods of construction will be covered, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each. Participants can expect to complete at least one knife and may complete more depending on skill level. Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $95 Forging for the Home Jacob Brown June 12 - 16 Using traditional methods of forging and joinery, participants will learn techniques necessary to produce spoons, ladles, spatulas, trivets, candleholders and fireplace tools. One will also have the opportunity to explore making garden tools like hand rakes and trowels with a variety of materials such as mild steel, tool steel, copper or brass. The more advanced or ambitious will be free to endeavor into larger projects like coat racks, pot racks, grill-works or fireplace cranes for example. Sword making techniques are elusive and will be revealed in this specialized workshop. The focus will be on the forging, grinding, tooling and the techniques involved with making the archetypal European Single Handed Cruciform Style Sword. Information on historic techniques of hilting and mounting the handle will be covered. Participants need to have intermediate forging skills to participate in the class. Paige Hamilton Davis June 26 - 30 This will be a great class for learning a lot of basic blacksmithing techniques and taking some time to practice what you may already know. Bring ideas and drawings for small pieces and together we will problem solve, with plenty of individual attention to help you achieve your project. There will be demos and a wealth of information shared. Come and enjoy the challenge of a blacksmith shop – fire and soot, hammer and anvil, welding, riveting, forming, and much more. Participants will develop solid skills, a piece or two and a sense of the vast application of smithing. Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $85 Basic Blacksmithing Jacob Brown July 3 - 5 Learn the basic techniques used to forge metal 3

with a hammer and anvil while making a few small projects. Topics covered will include; coal forge maintenance, hammering techniques, use of tongs, anvils, vises. Hands on work will teach you to create tapers to scrolls, bending, forming, hot punching, riveting and hot cutting. Expect to leave with basic skills and an understanding of forging hot steel. If you have prior experience this class will help you refresh and refine your forging skills. Beginner to Advanced Beginner Tuition: $390 Studio/Materials Fee: $70 Brace Yourself! Peter Ross July 17 - 21 In this workshop participants will make a cage head brace and several wood cutting center bits. Based on antique examples, the cage head is an all iron brace suitable for rougher use than a joiner’s brace. The project will involve some careful forging, file fitting and assembly, and will provide ample opportunity for the inclusion of decorative elements. We will cover good forging methods, basic bench skills such as filing techniques, small mortise and tenon construction, file decoration, and hardening and tempering of the bits. This project can be done without forge welding but solid forging skills will be necessary to make the parts fit. Intermediate to Advanced Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $80

Basic Rhino Training for 3D Printing Darlene Farris-LaBar July 17 - 21 Please see “Special Topics� on page 34 for the full workshop description. Volume and Form Maegan Crowley July 24 - 28 This course is designed to stimulate your metal vocabulary. We will be forging structural materials; learning the tricks of forging pipe, tubing, and channel and will see how hot and cold sheet forming techniques can be applied. Pattern making and layout methods will be discussed as participants use sheet metal to achieve volume. You will then have the opportunity to combine techniques to create your own forms. Fabrication methods including Oxy/acetylene welding, MIG welding, brazing, and torch cutting will be demonstrated. There will be an emphasis on individual expression as Maegan will work with each participant to assist with the development personal representations of form. Bring a

Advanced Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $85 Pattern Welded Steel for Blades & Otherwise James Viste July 31 - August 4 This course will provide a general overview of pattern development history and practice from beginning through advanced. In it, we will cover the re-purposing of materials for billets as well as processing of commonly used contemporary raw materials. Participants can plan on producing a pattern welded blade as well as material for future projects. Those interested in patterned steel for objects other than blades (i.e. jewelry, hardware etc.) are certainly welcome. There will be fire, there will be fun, and there will be sparks from the hammer and anvil and the grinder too. Students should have some forging experience. Forged Furniture John Rais August 7 - 11 This intensive will focus on the development of small furniture objects from the forge. We will use primarily heat, forging and forming techniques to define our designs in iron. We will also cover rivets, mortise in tenons, collars, and some fire welding. Design will come from inventive explorations mixed with historic decorative arts forms in iron. Projects may include small tables, stools, wall pieces and even vessels. Contemporary Forging Mike Rossi August 21 - 25 This intensive will focus on gaining familiarity with the tools and techniques of blacksmithing and their application. Through introductory exercises and projects, each participant will gain the confidence to work independently in the studio. We will also cover finishing of metalwork and the introduction of color to surface. Plan on having fun, working hard, and leaving with 2-3 small finished pieces. Forgings for Movement Haley Woodward August 14 - 18 This class will use basic forging methods to create a variety of moveable connections in steel. We will focus on forging the forms hot at the anvil, and will refine them using filing techniques and the drill press. Taking cues from industrial shapes, tools, and simple mechanisms, participants will forge yokes, pivots, levers, elbows, eyelets and pins to make an assortment of moveable connections that can be applied to sculptural or functional forms. The processes covered in making the parts will include; forge welding, tenons, punching, drifting, hot cutting, the isolation of mass, and the use of taps and dies. There will be an emphasis on creating forms that are functional, and embody informed aesthetic choices. Advanced Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $85

Arrow Heads‌Daggers‌and Spears Mace Vitale August 28 - September 1 This class will focus on pointy objects... Participants will begin by making a few types of arrow heads using assorted forging techniques and will then learn how to grind and heat treat the metal objects. Once your are comfortable forging these small shapes we will take it to the next level and forge daggers....After that, we will move up to larger material and forge one of mans oldest self defense and hunting tools...the spear! Introduction to Throwing on the Wheel Francine Epstein May 16 - 17 The potter’s wheel is an amazing tool and takes some practice to master. Participants will learn to center, bring up an even wall of clay and create basic forms such as cups, cylinders and bowls. Through teacher demonstration and hands on assistance, you will be led through the basic skills necessary to create pleasing pots. Participants with a little experience will have specific questions answered to promote personal progress. In a warm and supportive atmosphere, the group will feel free to ask questions and take some risks and have some fun with the clay. Beginner Tuition: $300 Studio/Materials Fee: $45 Approaches to Slab Built Sculpture Dan Molyneux May 23 - 25 Dan will demonstrate the way he prepares slabs, methods of construction, architectural

considerations, as well as the strategies used to begin a sculpture. Participants will roll out slabs with rolling pins and assemble forms with basic scoring tools, and fettling knives. Ribs, wooden finishing tools, and rasp (shredding) tools will be helpful for finishing the surfaces. Participants will learn techniques to avoid cracks, reinforce attachments, and approaches to construction that will ensure ceramic works are architecturally sound. Intermediate experience with hand building is essential to get the most out of this course. Intermediate to Advanced Tuition: $390 Studio/Materials Fee: $45 Introduction to Mold Making and Casting Ruth Borgenicht May 29 - June 2 Whether casting multiple functional pieces or hand-building an abstract sculpture, molds can be found in almost all ceramic studios. While molds can be made out of many different materials, plaster with its porosity and ability to capture minute details, has the most advantages. This workshop will cover the mixing of plaster

and making tile, texture and 2-piece molds. The artist will share her casting slip recipe (cone 6-10), how to mix it up and add colorants. Demonstrations will include casting into molds and nifty techniques using colored casting slip. Participants will have the opportunity to mix plaster, make their own molds as well as experiment with using casting slip and press molding. Students should bring in a variety of forms made of plastic, metal or leatherhard clay to cast. Ruth will work individually with the student to make molds from their models. Alternatively there will be bowl forms and textures provided for participants to experiment making molds from. Advanced Beginner to Advanced Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $80 Technical Woodfiring Justin Lambert June 5 - 9 Utilizing the 2 chambered noborigama participants will focus on careful loading of the kiln to maximize the development of flame markings, and ash melt. During the woodfiring careful observations will be made on the atmospheric conditions, flame speed, and ash melt. Because stoking patterns and intensity are very important to the success of the firing, Justin will develop and explain systems to keep everyone in the firing crew on the same “game plan”. Students need no prior experience in woodfiring and will leave with a better understanding of what happens in a wood kiln and with firing knowledge

applicable to other wood kilns in the future. Please bring bisque-fired work (made of high temperature stoneware or porcelain) ready to fire for this workshop. Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $100 From Ordinary to Extraordinary Maureen Mills June 12 - 16 Transforming your ceramic work from good work to extraordinary work takes time, practice and consideration of design elements. Through demonstrations that begin on the wheel addressing composition of form, participants will develop a working process that brings basic forms to a new level. Examination of forms to determine appropriate surface treatment will follow as we continue to explore how the design elements and principles influence our choices. The primary focus will be on wheelwork but techniques will be suitable for handbuilding as well. Students should be competent in either wheelwork or handbuilding. Altering Pots & Firing in Salt Susan Beecher June 19 - 23 Refresh & improve your throwing skills while learning new methods for altering your round pots into squares, ovals and other forms. We will work on altering bowls, jars, plates, vases, bottles & more. Specially cut & added feet will also be explored. Different decorating techniques will be covered such as slip decorating, scrafitto, wax resist & stamping. Pots will be glazed & fired in the salt kiln! Advanced Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $80 Battle of the Burn Bruce Dehnert & Steve Cook June 26 - 30 Come join in the insanity when we light up the fast-fire wood, soda, raku, pit, and gas reduction kilns. This year’s pyromania features an instructor from the East Coast and the other from the West, who will help guide participants through learning how to fire all of these kilns. This workshop offers the opportunity to work with your own glazes and clay bodies and put your ideas to the test. You bring the bisqueware and we provide the heat. There will be a full range of temperatures and atmospheres explored. And if you’re just looking to get out of your studio for a week and have round-the-clock access to our full complement of studio space, equipment, and feedback on your work you can do that, too! Pottery on the Wheel Kristin Muller July 3 - 5 Learn how to create pottery forms using the potter’s wheel. Participants with no experience will learn how to wedge, center, raise and shape clay into simple bowls, and vessel forms. If you have throwing experience you can refresh your skills and fine tune your throwing skills by learning more efficient ways of centering, raising, collaring and shaping clay to gain control of your wheel thrown pottery forms and increase production. Trimming, attaching handles, embellishing forms, design and composition will also be presented. Bring your ideas and or samples of your work. Beginner and Beyond Tuition: $390 Studio/Materials Fee: $45 Cut & Paste Casting, Building and Assembling with Porcelain Jennifer Ling Datchuk & Ryan Takaba July 10 - 14 Mold making and slip-casting are great skills to have when hand-building with porcelain. In this workshop, participants will learn to make a two part plaster mold and cast this object using a mid range porcelain slip. Participants will learn how to build and assemble using a combination of found slip-casting molds along with their object. Together the class will create sculptural multiples that can be combined and altered in limitless configurations and possibilities. We will discuss the technicalities of hand-building and

casting with porcelain and the benefits when building sculptural forms. Intermediate to Advanced Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $80 Set the Table Deborah Schwartzkopf July 17 - 21 Design a tableware presentation in this handson intensive place setting workshop. The focus will be on making a unified set: a cup, bowl, plate, and centerpiece. Identify and explore the relationships within and between forms. Learn new ways to move clay with skill building exercises. Demonstrations will offer techniques combining simple altered, wheel thrown sections with slab built parts. We will cover basic template making and create bisque molds to shape slabs. Build your ideas, practice and create expressive place settings. Increasing the Scale & Drama of your Work Richard Aerni July 24 - 28 Learn how to throw using bisque and plaster forms to increase scale and drama in your work. Participants will be given instruction on how to create these forms for work in the future. Please plan on bringing bisque ware to spray glaze, using wood ash and other glazes that will be fired to cone 10 in reduction. Instruction will be given in single-firing, though time precludes using this method for class formed work. You should be able to center and throw five pounds of clay comfortably to properly utilize these techniques. Intermediate to Advanced Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $75

Color and Pattern: An Approach to Pottery Decoration Adero Willard July 31 - August 4 In this workshop you will learn how to create intricate surfaces by combining and layering color and pattern using resists, sgraffito, and mishima. Adero will show you these traditional techniques and how to alter and layer them to create depth. Through hand-on practice you will learn how to apply these layering techniques to create depth and complexity on your surfaces. As we progress, you will have a chance to play with and apply some of these techniques using your own personal aesthetic and ideas. Alongside this intensive surface exploration, Adero will demonstrate a variety of thrownand-altered and hand-built forms, and discuss how those forms and surface decoration evolved. From simple to complex (depending on your level of clay experience), and with help through individual advice, you will create work in which surface treatment is integrated with form. Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $75 Soda for Surface John Hasegawa August 7 - 10 This four-day hands-on workshop allows participants to discover the beauty of soda / salt firing. Students should bring 10 pieces of bisque ware from Cone 10 clay – either dark or light clay is suitable. Please bring bisqueware of different sizes, including more vertical pieces and fewer horizontal pieces such as bowls and plates. On the first day participants will glaze their work and John will discuss and demonstrate decorating and glazing for atmospheric firing, along with loading the kiln. Day two and three will include firing and additional demonstrations on throwing and altering pots. On day four, while the kiln is cooling, participants will finish the previous days work and then unload the kiln and discuss the work. Making work for the Anagama Jack Troy August 14 - 17 You will not want to miss this special opportunity to explore form , function, aesthetic values, textures, tactile qualities and surface development of wood firing. Jack will share ways he developed his unique approach to making pottery and historic and contemporary wood firing. He will also share his poetry and poetic approach as well as an abundance of technical expertise. You will be encouraged to advance your work and consider what you know about wood-firing to inform the pieces you will make. A selection of work made in the workshop will be fired in the Peters Valley Anagama. Intermediate to Advanced Tuition: $480 Studio/Materials Fee: $130 Firing the Peters Valley Anagama Jack Troy August 18 - 25, Unloading August 30 This hands-on workshop will begin long before we convene because everyone will create pieces in their own studios or the prior week in the Making Work for the Anagama workshop. Works should be made from high temperature stoneware and or porcelain clay bodies and bisque fired to arrive with bisqueware at PV. Jack will share a lifetime of wood firing knowledge with participants who will apply wadding and load ware into the anagama kiln. The loading process will consider how form,

flame path and wad marks will create aesthetic statements. The firing will be a watchful process of heat movement and flame path, atmosphere and temperature. The kiln will be fired in shifts around the clock until the desired temperature and conditions are reached, cooled for five days and unloaded on August 30th. The unloading will provide a plethora of information to be analyzed by noting the surfaces that developed during the firing. A reflection on the success and failures will provide considerations for the next time you touch wet clay. Intermediate to Advanced Tuition: $815 Studio/Materials Fee: $130 Build a Clay Torso Kevin Rohde September 5 - 7 During the three day workshop participants will learn to construct a clay torso/bust using the solid building construction method. Each step of the building process will be covered, including armature design, basic anatomical structure, measuring from photographic reference, deconstruction, hollowing, reconstruction, and surface development. Participants are urged to bring photographic source material and inspiration. The workshop will also contain an image presentation with visuals of each step of the process. Scrumbling – Freeform Crochet Linda Brooks Hirschman May 16 - 17 This class is for people who love to crochet but don’t want to be bothered with yarn weights, needle sizes and patterns. Learn to improvise and create your own designs, with no counting, no plan (and no ripping out.) It’s magical to see what you can make when you break the rules. Bring your stash and make something beautiful. Anything goes! It’s addictive! This workshop is for people who are comfortable with basic crochet stitches (single and double.) Knitting skills are helpful but not necessary. Intermediate Tuition: $300 Studio/Materials Fee: $10 Extracting Primary Colors from Natural Dye Plants Elissa Meyers & Mira Adornetto May 23 - 25 Learn the basic techniques of extracting color from natural dye plants and then apply the color to different fibers. Leave the workshop with a grounded knowledge of how to use plant material to make color on fiber by experimenting on cotton and silk fabrics. The colorful adventure includes; the extraction of blue from plant material, utilizing a naturally fermenting indigo vat, developing the color red, how to create varied shades, plants that provide yellow shades, over dye and how to develop secondary colors. Techniques such as; Shibori, Itajime and resist painting will be demonstrated and used as a

form of mark making in the practice of using these historical dyes. The possibilities of color and texture using plant material are infinite; this workshop is for those that have interest in art, history, chemistry and biology. Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $390 Studio/Materials Fee: $45 Yards & Yards: Designing and Weaving Handwoven Yardage Daryl Lancaster May 29 - June 2 Improve your basic weaving skills and learn to work with the loom and create beautiful flawless yardage suitable for garments. This workshop will give participants a chance to design, warp, and weave 4-5 yards of plain weave fabric using mixed yarns of various colors and textures. Participants will learn to use a paddle for winding warps in repeat. We will be warping from front to back. Advanced Beginner to Intermediate Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $60 Batik: Ancient & Modern Techniques Lian Sawires June 5 - 9 Here is an opportunity to expand your dying and surface design expertise by exploring the use of soy and traditional wax methods to draw, paint, and create patterns which result in visually complex designs and paintings on fabric. Abstract, representational and decorative designs can be easily and beautifully created

using brush waxing, splattering, carving, writing, use of Tjantings and stamps. Multiple layers will be waxed and dyed using cold dye techniques to create unique, innovative work. Turkish (ebru) Silk & Paper Marbling Richard Aldorasi July 3 - 5 Through the Silk Road the art of marbling made its entrance into 15th century Turkey. This workshop will explore the preparation of the wide range of colors used in Turkish (ebru) marbling. You will learn the mixing of sizing (the liquid bath the colors are placed on). Floating pictures and swirling patterns are created on top of the bath using applicator bottles and brushes made from broom straw and horsehair and special tools (rakes and combs). The patterns are then transferred onto a variety of rice papers and silk fabrics. We will learn the elegant method of figuring; thus producing the floral effects that have for centuries captured the minds and hearts of this Ottoman /Islamic art. Introduction to Ondulé Weaving Amy Putansu July 24 - 28 Ondulé weaving is an unusual technique requiring a specialized tool (reed) and some modification to the loom. The result is cloth with undulating warp threads waving throughout the interlacement. In this workshop students will take turns weaving a variety of ondulé, learning how to manipulate the loom and maneuver this technique. We will also discuss design for ondulé, specifically executing ideas in the warp with a focus on hand painting and striping. Participants will design and make their own warps to take home along with their hand woven swatches. The minimum experience level for this class would include knowing how to warp a floor loom and weave simple structures. Architectural Photography: Technique & Philosophy Rick Wright June 12 - 15 The Architectural Photographer draws on a wide array of skills to produce memorable images that convey a sense of place, an expression of the architect’s ideas, and a connection to landscape and surroundings. Rick keeps it fun; breaking down the complex process of shooting buildings by locating “The Big Idea” in any shoot. What is the story of the building, the home, the farmhouse, the cabin? How does it relate to the terrain, neighboring homes, the nearby town? In short, what makes this built structure special? Once you start cultivating your own stories, your photography gets simpler and very focused! Perspective and Composition become your chief cohorts as you bring the building to life. The Monotype Print: One Impression and Maybe One More Stephen McKenzie July 24 - 28 The Monotype is a printmaking hybrid combining elements of printmaking, painting, and collage. A fully inked impression is pulled with a second, or “ghost print,� possible depending on the amount of residual ink remaining on the plate. Monotype offers the opportunity to use a variety of materials and media in a spontaneous manner without requiring extensive technical knowledge needed for other forms of printmaking. Participants will construct, assemble and veneer a mantle clock body and trim comprised of veneer, MDF and hardwoods of their choice from start to finish. Introduction to CNC Routing Andrew Pitts August 14 - 18 This course introduces CNC design and routing using the ShopBot Desktop CNC routing machine in conjunction with Vectric CAD/CAM software to design and create carved objects. The course will cover the hardware and software used in CNC routing, and the students will use their personal laptop computers to create designs with provided software (temporarily licensed), and then convert the digital files to toolpaths that the CNC machine can recognize to actually cut material. Techniques include profile cutting, v-carving, 3D carving, and two sided carving. After completing the course, students should feel comfortable using design software to create their own designs, as well as using downloadable designs, and be able to produce CNC router toolpaths and have

Beginner Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $45 Decorating a Turned Bowl with Inlay Geoffrey Noden August 21 - 23 Learn the inlay process developed by Geoffrey in which end-grain wafers are used to create one-of-a-kind patterns. Participants will learn to adorn the rim of a turned bowl or platter with beautiful inlay. Basic turning skills are needed as participants are expected to bring a turned bowl or platter and turn a groove into the rim of a piece prior to coming to class detailed instructions will be provided). Through hands on experimentation you will gain a complete understanding of this inlay process and leave with a completed, finished piece. Intermediate Tuition: $390 Studio/Materials Fee: $75 Building the Jam-8 Kayak Don Metz August 28 - September 1 In this workshop we will be building a 7’ 8” personal water craft. She will be built using marine

grade mahogany plywood and assembled using the stitch and epoxy resin. There is no wood working or boat building knowledge required using this effective and very simple way to build a variety of water craft. Upon completion the course participants will have the knowledge to build similar boats. Beginner and Beyond Tuition: $560 Studio/Materials Fee: $675 Forms for Shaping Wood Laminations Jim Whitman September 5 - 6 In this weekend workshop you will learn bending techniques to shape laminated wood into “Curvy” shapes. While focusing on making a set of salad tongs, you will learn the techniques needed to re-saw thin strips of wood on the band saw, glue them up and clamp them into the form you have made. After the piece has dried you will learn how to clean up the edges and trim to the final shape. These tongs make great gifts and with the form you make in class, you can produce “hundreds” of them at home. You will also learn how to shape veneers into decorative forms and jewelry. TAKING CLASSES AT PETERS VALLEY On-Campus Lodging Lodging for workshop students is available on the Peters Valley campus in our rustic farmhouses. The accommodations are basic and “no frills�. Rooms have two twin beds, share a bathroom and are not air conditioned. The fee is $45 per night. There are a very limited number of single rooms, rooms that do have air conditioning, and two rooms that have a private bath. Additional fees are charged and reservations are made on a firstcome, first-serve basis by calling the office.

Meals Freshly prepared meals are served in the Peters Valley Dining Hall during workshop sessions. Lunches are included in the tuition cost for the workshop for all students. Breakfast & dinner can be purchased separately as a meal plan or pay as you go at the dining hall. Dinner is available the evening before the workshop begins for an additional cost of $15 and may be paid at the door. Dinner is not served on the last day of the workshop. Please see our website for pricing information. Students are encouraged to bring along snacks to enjoy when the dining hall is closed.

Refunds & Cancellation Policy Except for a $50 cancellation fee and the $30 registration fee, all fees are refundable if notice is given 30 days prior to start of workshop. No refunds will be made after that date. No refunds will be given if a student withdraws after a workshop begins. Peters Valley School of Craft reserves the right to cancel a workshop due to low enrollment or an emergency. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund. Fresh air and respite from one’s normal routine can bring FRESH INSIGHTS, and for some, perhaps, opportunities for peak moments, magic, and transformation. Our gallery shows, craft fairs, annual auctions, presentations at various festivals, community outreach efforts, and other programs allow us to both bring fine crafts to a wider audience, and to help SHAPE FUTURE STANDARDS of excellence in fine crafts. We honor the tradition of crafts by continuing to experiment with new techniques and materials, in pursuit of artistic, professional, and personal GROWTH. This is our focus and joy.
