Performance Notes: Accidentals apply to the octave in which they appear and hold throughout the measure, though in highly chromatic passages courtesy accidentals have been provided. All grace notes occur before the beat. Unless otherwise indicated, trills should be played with the interval of one semitone. Notes on Movement II: After a brief intro in movement II: Vals, instruments split into three independently coordinated groups. Bassoon and horn, flute and clarinet, and solo oboe each play in autonomous, contrasting tempos. Cues for entrances and cutoffs are specifically indicated in the score and parts. The end of the section should continue directly into the coda of the movement without pause. Within the context of the general tempos and cues provided, there is a good deal of flexibility in this movement which relies on the musical intuition of the performers.
