ANCIENT EGYPT // AFTERLIFE

PROJECT: INARCH NARRATIVE STUDIO LOCATION: THE FIELD MUSEUM DATE: FALL, 2018

The Ancient Egyptians believed that life on Earth was only one part of an eternal journey which ended, not in death, but in everlasting joy. From everyday artifacts, hieroglyphs, mummies, and to a Book of the Dead, this exhibition demonstrates how the Ancient Egyptians lived and died in preparation of the afterlife.

PERSPECTIVE SECTION

The perspective section to the left shows an overview of the entire exhibit. Upon entering you are greeted by large statues of ancient Egyptian gods with a large digital video screen as a backdrop. This sets the tone for the rest of the exhibit and puts the visitor in an “alternate reality.

After learning of how the Ancient Egyptians lived and prepared for death, the visitor enters the mastaba which tells the story of the journey to the afterlife through floor to ceiling hieroglyphs. The exhibit is designed to let visitors contemplate on what is beyond life and death regardless of what their beliefs are.

P 10 - 11

The Ancient Egyptians believed that life on Earth was only one part of an eternal journey which ended, not in death, but in everlasting joy.

The Life section of the exhibit contains artifacts from the daily lives of ancient Egyptians and gives us clues to how they lived. As visitors explore through the death section of the exhibit, they can learn about the mummification process and how the ancient Egyptians prepared the bodies for the afterlife.

PROJECT: INARCH DETAIL STUDIO LOCATION: AMTRAK HIGH SPEED RAIL DATE: FALL, 2018 Standing Bar Cafe / Bar

Infrarail is a design proposal for a cafe car on the new Amtrak high speed train from Chicago to St. Louis. This proposal draws on concepts from infrared light.

Infrared (IR) light is the part of the EM spectrum that people encounter most in everyday life, although much of it goes unnoticed. It is invisible to human eyes, but people can feel it as heat. The cafe car utilizes backlit acrylic panels to “reveal the hidden” by manipulating objects and people within the train car.

MANIPULATION The TileMatrix LED backlighting system is programmed to have the lights constantly changing from pink and blue hues [colors of the IR spectrum].

P 20 - 21

Although the light is the main design component, how the light manipulates the objects and people in the train car is also a point of focus. The lighting will give all objects and people a purplish pink hue regardless of their skin color.

ZIPLINE 001 | CUSTOM TASK LIGHTING LED Task Light A task light is included in the space for people who need to work

High Gloss Acrylic The light fixture extends 18 horizontally so the material needs to be light-weight but sturdy

Charging Station A different iteration of the light base includes a USB port to charge phones

TABLETOP + CUPHOLDER | INDIVIDUAL & BOOTH SEATING The furniture design was kept to a minimal to draw attention to the light and how it changes the objects and people in the train car.

The design draws inspirataion from the IPhone 5 beveled edge and a standard petri dish.

FINDULATION

PROJECT - 3 “In each of us lie good and bad, light and dark, art and pain, choice and regret, cruelty and sacrifice. We’re each of us our own chiaroscuro, our own bit of illusion fighting to emerge into something solid, something real. We’ve got to forgive ourselves that. I must remember to forgive myself. Because there is a lot of grey to work with. No one can live in the light all the time.”

P 26 - 27

- Libba Bray

1:4 CHIAROSCURO The challenge was to design a “space within a space” utilizing design concepts from the Baroque period. Findulation was inspired by Bernini’s columns for the altar at St. Peters Basilica and draws on concepts from chiaroscuro. The light frame and the fins allow light to pass through casting shadows onto the person inside.

KOREAN CULTURAL CENTER // 한인문화회관 PROJECT: INARCH FINAL STUDIO LOCATION: CHICAGO, IL DATE: SPRING, 2019

Han is a complex emotion, a condition marked by deep sorrow and a sense of incompleteness. On the other hand, it gives a sense of hope, an ability to silently endure hardships and suffering. It is intensely personal yet felt collectively by both old and new generations. With rectilinear forms, simplicity and materials, this design proposal draws on concepts of traditional korean architecture and shapes them through a modern lens.

SITE ANALYSIS The fulton market district has historically been home to food packers and distributors in an area that has had an industrial presence since 1880. The area did not have “L” transit access until the Morgan Street Stop openeded in 2012. Driven by the newly available public transportation, the area saw a surge in new restaurants and additional amenities in subsequent years. These changes were followed by an interest from companies looking for non-traditional, openloft office space; In stark contrast with area’s industrial past.

THE COURTYARD ma dang

A courtyard can be found in most traditional Korean architecture. It was typically located in the center of the building and was used as a communal space where most interactions and activities occured.

P 40 - 41

In the Korean Cultural Center Chicago, the atrium acts as a “Courtyard and ties all of the spaces together. The Courtyard doubles as a lounging area and a performance space and is visible from all areas of the building.

뜀칄 bu chae A buchae is a traditional Korean fan, typically made of paper and wood. The buchae, originally used to keep cool on a hot day, was used for ceremonies, performances and was used to identify social class. An accent piece made of multiple fans is hung on the back wall behind the cafe bar. The lightness of the paper is in stark contrast with the masonry wall that it sits on. Since the building is mainly open, it can get pretty lively. The cafe is a place where one can find a moment of calm.
