Welcome Message: From PPG’s President T

Welcome to Leeds and the first ever educational summit hosted by Pet Professional Guild British Isles!

he British Isles Mini Summit marks yet another milestone in PPG’s rapid growth and development as it is our first ever gathering outside the United States of skilled, qualified and experienced professionals who are committed to scientifically sound, humane training methods for all animals. I am very excited about it and hope that you will find it a highly fun, educational experience. Since its inception in April 2015, PPGBI has made enormous progress. We are seeing a daily influx of PPG members located in the region transferring over to PPGBI and they are joined regularly by new British Isles-based members. PPGBI also offers a regular schedule of online educational webinars by leading industry experts, a hotline for potential clients searching for a forcefree trainer or behavior consultant, a host of member benefits via PPGBI’s preferred partner vendors, and an ever-increasing library of training articles, educational handouts and informative videos. The Mini Summit schedule is packed with an incredible program of topics and presenters and will provide many amazing networking opportunities, meaning you are about to embark on an action packed weekend! This is your chance to really enjoy every moment we have to meet up with other force-free professionals and learn from an outstanding line-up of speakers. I personally would like to meet as many of you as possible. If you see me around, please interrupt me, say “hello” or tap me on the back as you are passing by. We always have time for our members and getting to know you all will be one of the event highlights for me.

Our goals for the Mini Summit are three-fold: 1.

2. 3.

To help build awareness of PPGBI as a first-class member organization and to build a stronger collaboration of force-free pet professionals.

To help support and build communication and networking opportunities with the veterinary community.

To provide a highly interactive and fun educational format for all that attend.

I am delighted to be joined by members of the PPGBI steering committee Louise Stapleton-Frappell, Denise O'Moore, Stephanie Presdee, Carole Husein and Claire Staines, as well as PPG steering committee members Angelica Steinker - vice chair of the education committee, Rebekah King - membership manager, and Susan Nilson - editor, BARKS from the Guild. We are all looking forward to meeting more of our British Isles members and chatting about how we can best forge the way ahead together. By joining us at this event you can help us shape the future of PPGBI! Enjoy your time here, absorb as much knowledge as possible, meet as many of your colleagues as you can, share expertise and experiences, and breathe in those positive, supportive vibes. Together we can permeate our force-free knowledge, principles and philosophy to all we meet.

Niki Tudge Founder and President Pet Professional Guild

Presentation: TrickMeister Reinforcement Strategies for Success

W

hat? When? Where? How? Why? There are so many questions that we can ask about the reinforcement process. What is reinforcement? What are you using as a reinforcer in your training sessions? When/where does reinforcement occur in the learning cycle? How are you delivering it? How quickly are you delivering it? How does the delivery effect the behaviour being taught? How does the 'value' of the reinforcer effect the behaviour? Why are you using a certain strategy? Some of the answers to these questions will overlap. The reinforcement strategies you use in your training plan will effect the behaviour being taught. Are you guilty of thrusting the food 'reward' to your learner's mouth as quickly as possible? Is the 'reward' you are using really a 'reinforcer'? Is it even a 'reward'? TrickMeister Reinforcement Strategies for Success will endeavour to answer many of these questions and explain how to best use different reinforcement strategies to enhance your training sessions and the future 'strength' of the behaviours you are teaching. You will gain a deeper understanding of the 'hierarchy of rewards'; primary and secondary reinforcers; where the reinforcement process starts and ends; motivating operations and setting events; the different schedules of reinforcement and the different strategies you can use to deliver the reinforcer in order to set your learner up for success.

basic strategic marketing plan is paramount as a small business owner, no matter how good you are at what you do. For many small business owners, taking the time to develop a marketing strategy can seem so overwhelming that it never even makes it onto their to-do list. In fact, one’s marketing strategy may never even emerge from being a thought or a remote possibility. Planning, launching and/or operating a successful pet care business may not directly result from how good you are as a practitioner. In fact, if you are really good at what you do and therefore spend all your time doing it, your business may be adversely affected. Why? Because if you spend 100 percent of your time working in your business you will have nothing left to work on your business.

any small businesses simply wait for talent to arrive at their doorstep, but simply advertising an open position and hoping that you find the right talent does not guarantee that you will find the best people for the job. Good employee recruitment is essential to the success of your business and hiring a new employee is one of the largest investments your business will make. Topics to be covered include: • Understanding the employee selection process. • Recognising the GROW model and how to set goals. • Identifying and avoiding bias when making offers. • Preparing for the interview and question process. • Discovering ways to retain talent and measure growth.
