“We conceive furniture and objects as a work of art that does not lose its functional purpose, while at the same time we use only the finest of materials.
SHORT STORY
We live in a world where we coexist with the objects around us, as they ‘move’ throughout our space, almost as if they existed even before we discovered them. Our source of inspiration combines spontaneity and an escape from elaborate design along with the rigid rules that surround it. Our desire is that the object sheds itself of any excess weight in the form of design, material, form, etc. We are not interested in mass production. After all, it is about quality, not quantity. And why not, perhaps even reveal a flaw or imperfection – like real life itself. Kontaki design has participated in the following exhibitions that took place in: -'MAN'–ERSI GALLERY, Kolonaki, Athens, December, 2011 -DESIGN PLAZA, Marousi, Athens, 2012-2013 -Fight Aids Monaco, Monaco, 2012

Spiros Kontakis was born in Athens, Greece in 1969. He initially began a career focused on music, involved in both realms of production and performance. He worked for more than fifteen years as a professional musician in London and Athens, where he contributed in the making of about three hundred albums, as a session player and as a writer. He started to feel compromised as an artist in order to sustain himself financially and this eventually led to the realization that music was not the path for him. He needed to reevaluate his future as an artist and reconnect with his younger self, the child that still exists within him, in order to express his feelings about life and the world around him freely. So he took pen and paper and started to draw images of objects and pieces of furniture, which, although static, began to take on a life of their own, obtaining consciousness and eventually breaking free, by breaking the barriers of immobility. Just like that, Kontaki Design was born, his very own boutique furniture company. Nothing was more fundamental to Spiros than to bring these doodles to
life. He collaborated with a small team of craftsmen and technicians and worked for months on end until his first design was finally ready. Since then, he has designed and constructed a large number of objects, lighting and furniture, all handcrafted, unique and sold in limited numbers. His intention has always been to ensure that his creations communicate this magical connection he retains with his childhood memories; when the charm of naivety and innocence inspire to deform and reconstruct reality in a dream like manner, by constantly ignoring the logic and regulations that are often imposed on you once you become an adult. Spiros aspires for his objects to travel the world, meet up and converse with different people and find themselves a place to rest, in various spaces, bringing a new perspective of comfort and awareness to those they interact with.

CHAIRMAN IN CRISIS
The name Chairman in Crisis speaks for itself. Metaphorically, however, it suggests a lot more. The broken chair is not only an indication of the financial crisis, but also of a humanitarian one. The chairman collapses and along with him so do all other objects surrounding him, as they cannot withstand the weight of his absence. It is at this point that design makes an intervention to salvage whatever has remained. The broken chair is complete with the addition of a strong and sturdy metal base and a round cushion, placed on the back of the chair allowing for our weary and heavy thoughts and minds to lean against it.

CHARM CHAIR
A chair that is both alluring and seductive. Indeed, its unusual design draws you in and proves to be particularly charming. Its design may be evocative of some sort of interrogation, suggesting it will be a hard and uncomfortable piece of furniture. In reality, however, it proves otherwise allowing you to sit comfortably. A chair that combines the eccentric design of a chaise longue together with the structure of a one-legged roman daybed. 14

la REVOLUTION
The name of the dining table is LA REVOLUTION. The table is called LE MONARQUE and the three chairs are called MARIANNE, GUILLOTINE and LA RESISTANCE respectively. The revolutionary spirit of this dining table is reflected in the irregularity of its surface and the individually designed chairs. The unconventional design of the table may be indicative of the weakened ideological identity of those eating together at the table, whilst the three chairs symbolize the conflicting opinions being put forward. The parallelism with the French Revolution can be found in its diverse symbols (Marianne, Guillotine, Resistance and Monarch). 18

MAN
The floor light MAN stands as my first design. It is the man who leans over you. It is nailed to a base, with no legs or arms and yet it finds a way to embrace you. Its body, although made of stiff wood, has softened with age and bends over slightly, giving away the heaviness one acquires with the passing of time. Due to its height and cubic-shaped head, it appears at once imposing and slightly aloof, however, this intriguing figure is sensitive and has a mind of its own, one that can at once illuminates and be illuminated.

BOTTLEFLY MARY The name of this trolley bar is dedicated to my dear friend, Mary. It came about as a result of her need for a trolley bar‌ a tipsy one that would dance around. In this particular design, the wheel separates the trolley into two perpendicular levels, cutting through each level somewhat unaware that bottles and glasses will be placed on each one. It is an unusual trolley that may face obstacles on its way but will overcome them. It twirls around gracefully and lives coolly. Always looking on the bright side of life, just like my friend Mary. 32

SOFT DOUGH The word ‘dough’ in this buffet’s title refers to its flexible and malleable qualities, but also references the redolent smell of dough, evoking childhood memories. This item of furniture brings timelessness, simplicity, and familiarity to mind. One of my strongest childhood memories is of my mother’s buffet, brownish-black under layer upon layer of varnish, a testament to repeated attempts to revamp it. It was crooked, giving way under the weight of years passed and we were in constant fear of it breaking in two at any moment. For this reason, I designed this buffet broken in two from the start.

POPEYE
The name of this floor lamp refers mainly to its Pop art characteristics but was also inspired by the cartoon hero Popeye the sailorman. The ‘eye’ of the lamp protrudes outwards. Reflecting a desire to look beyond and form a new outlook on life and the world around. The saturation that exists in rounded lamps and the way in which the light shines from them, led me to create a new lamp that is ‘born’ from the round exterior metallic shell. The old and used give rise to the new, shiny and bright.

CONICAL
The name of this tea set is what gives away its shape. It is conical and rebellious; almost like an optical illusion, the four cups are designed to make them appear upside down when in fact they are not. We are used to facing the lines of a design in the direction that is most suitable to us and on the basis of a user friendly practicality we take for granted. In this particular case, the teapot itself decides what shape it chooses to take and freely defines itself within the space. It may be a challenge to use, however, due to its bold character it will manage to impose on us and gain our admiration as a work of art.

EUCLID
A couch-bench with the name EUCLID is naturally indicative of geometry. Nevertheless, in this particular case we are referring to a piece of furniture, one that was simply placed on the ground and remained in that position forever. We don’t change it, we don’t disturb it; we simply enhance and add different elements to it in order for it to take its final shape. The couch-bench may well has been composed of one leg on top of which a straight plank would be placed along with a pillow. This, however, did not occur. Euclid envisioned that the entire cushion itself be shaped into a triangle and placed on top of the lopsided wooded plank, in order for the couch to gain its desirable straight line.

YOU CUBE
The name given to the table lamp YOU CUBE was inspired by YouTube. It consists of a classic cubic base supporting a modern LED light source. This new lighting technology aligns perfectly with YOU CUBE’s clean-cut lines. L&N
This unique chaise longue represents a woman who goes by the name Helen. The choice of the initials L and N are not coincidental but are a result of the way in which we pronounce her name along with the structure of her frame. Observing this piece of furniture, you realize that the two letters, L&N, are creatively entangled into one another, creating an abstract frame that is both unexpected and intriguing. The delicate, cool and clean lines bring to mind a woman who leisurely lies on a chaise longue by the pool.

HAPPY LITTLE MAN
The floor lamp MAN got a little sibling, called Happy Little Man, that differs to the initial design not only regarding its size but also its temper. Happy Little Man is also nailed and confined to a base, without arms or legs, and yet it finds a way to feel happy. Its body, although made of wood, is flexible and curvy, proof of its inherent cheerfulness. Despite its youthfulness, it is a wise Little Man and its cubistic mind is able to both illuminate those around it and be illuminated, giving and receiving light.

NATALIE
A friend of mine, Natalie, asked me to design a simple chair for her dining room. I grabbed a pen and paper and showed her that the only thing necesarry for one to sit properly is a back, four legs and two arms, stuck to either side of the seat. All pieces of the same puzzle. The chair took Natalie’s characteristics and gained femininity and comfort. She wears her fabric with ease and sits gracefully. Well aware that no matter how hard you look to find another chair in the room, its her you will choose in the end. She will be there waiting. You will, no doubt, be mesmerized.

J - POP
The name of this chair is indicative of its influences. J, for Japan, as it is reminiscent of a chair typical to Japanese aesthetic and POP due to the colorful and decorative fabric in which it is dressed. It is essentially like dressing a dog. It does not actually need to be dressed, however, we choose to ‘load’ it in clothing in order to make our lives more beautiful and colorful. The same thing occurs in the case of the chair’s wooden frame. It does not, in itself, need colorful fabrics in order to appear more beautiful. We, on the other hand, insist on dressing it in blossoming floral.

MY 7th GRADE TEACHER The name of this chair immediately brings to mind the image of our 7th grade Teacher, she was something else. Effectively awakening those intense emotions brought on by those first erotic fantasies of our adolescence. The chair has the characteristics likewise to those of our high school teacher: Strict and firm yet simultaneously tender and delicate. The comfortable velvet seat is evocative of our sensual teacher and her ethereal existence, whilst the firm lines that form its wooden frame are reminiscent of her legs, tucked away and held firmly together as she sat at her desk.

YURI’S DREAM
The double bed Yuri’s Dream is your way of structuring moon landings as another Yuri Gagarin. Fearless, invincible and light; this is how you feel whilst lying on this bed. There is no need to go back in time, to April 12th 1961, in order to begin your longest journey yet. Every night you can repeat this same journey, without moving an inch away from your bed. Closing your eyes, switching on the light placed on your bedside table and entering your own orbital path. Where grownups are still children, where fears pass from sight and the most exciting journey is just beginning.

It seals away words, pictures and moments, becoming an accomplice to the lies. Stop living in this illusion and making lousy excuses. Break your silence. KONTALOS
The name of this buffet is formed by the combination of two words, KON (Kontakis) and TALOS (the mythical bronze giant Talos who protected Crete). Its form and structure resembles that of a robot, Talos has often been referred to as the first robot in Greek mythology. Nowadays, he lies on his back and is unable to protect society; KONTALOS is no longer on the battlefield. He props up his head against one arm, remembering times gone by and feels an overwhelming sense of grief as he watches history repeating itself – a society attacked on all frontiers, and yet there is no robot to save it this time.

MAN AGAINST THE WALL The wall lamp Man Against the Wall is a creation inspired by the prototype floor lamp MAN and represents the cubistic mind of a man. A man that is able to find a way to embrace you despite being nailed to a base. The name of this lamp exposes its specialty. It is the Man that opposes the tall walls that peer over it. It stands up against the system, the mundane and the indifferent and gives meaning to our lives by shedding light on it.

DOWN BY LAW
Down by Law, a 1986 black-and-white film along with the fine line that exists between what is legal and illegal inspired the creation of the DOWN BY LAW bag. Its design reflects that of a lawyer’s briefcase: made of leather, serious, upright, and conforming. â€&#x; At the same time, however, its eccentric design along with the metallic handle that depicts the brand's logo carry the air of a drifter, the air of one who goes against the norm. It is a bag that manages to put together skillfully both sides of a coin. Moreover it addresses simultaneously both those who abide and those who defy the law.

MAN-AKI
The table lamp Man-aki is the mini version of MAN-my first design. It is the man that finds himself nailed to a base, with no legs or arms and yet it finds a way to embrace you. Its body, although made of stiff wood, has softened with age and bends over slightly, giving away to the heaviness one acquires with the passing of time. Due to its cubic-shaped head, it appears at once imposing and slightly aloof, however, this intriguing figure is sensitive and has a mind of its own, one that can at once illuminate and be illuminated.

POPEYE AGAINST THE WALL
The name of this floor/table lamp POPEYE refers mainly to its Pop art characteristics but was also inspired by the cartoon hero Popeye the sailorman.
