Delicious Dishes
Christmas Garlands
Ingredients: These look so 150g/6oz unsalted butter; 150g/6oz pretty, you could caster sugar; 1 medium egg; make several 225g/9oz plain white flour, sifted; batches and give 100g/4oz green and red cherries. them as little gifts! Method: 1 Pre-heat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5 and lightly oil 2-3 baking sheets. 2 Cream the butter and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, then beat in the egg and lastly the flour. Mix to form a stiff but pliable dough. 3 Wrap and chill for 30 minutes. 4 Rinse the cherries and pat dry. Cut each cherry into slivers. 5 Divide the dough into small rounds about half the size of the cherries and place 8 joined in a circle on a baking tray with a sliver of cherry between the join. 6 Chill the mixture again and then bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden. 7 Sprinkle with a little extra caster sugar, leave to cool for 1-2 minutes, then transfer to a wire cooling rack and leave until cold. Store in an airtight tin.

Nicky has followed in the footsteps of her father and grandfather. Her father opened an art shop in Cheltenham in the 1960s and, when Nicky left school, she went to work for him and later became a partner. On his retirement Nicky decided to pursue something

She then spotted an empty shop just a few doors up from where her father’s shop had been and, after a few ups and downs over the years, has completely re-furbished and re-stocked Strand Arts. The knowledge Nicky and her team possess is extensive and they enjoy helping customers in need of professional advice – and it’s free! There are also special offers available every month and you can join Nicky’s email list to get forewarned of the latest deals. With the huge ‘St James car park’ just around the corner, parking is so easy for anyone needing to pop in for supplies. And you needn’t worry about the parking fee either – Nicky will refund up to an hour’s parking when you spend over £5. Let’s Talk is Gloucestershire’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service – a free service from your local NHS. We offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for people with mild to moderate S SE JANUARY COUR anxiety and depression as well as other common mental health difficulties. CBT is a nationally recognised first choice treatment for depression and anxiety CHELTENHAM – it focuses on the ‘here and now’. It uses specific techniques to manage 6th – Emotional Wellbeing symptoms by modifying behaviours and thoughts that maintain depression and for Older Adults g anxiety. CBT is solution focussed – we will work together to achieve specific 7th & 18th – Emotional Wellbein agreed goals. You will also have tasks to complete between sessions. 8th – Low Mood

Christmas Catastrophes and Doggy Disasters As I was enjoying a quick lunchtime walk with the dogs the other day I received an urgent call from the clinic – a dog had just eaten a decent quantity of chocolate cake and the owner was rightly concerned about whether it might cause a problem. A medically induced vomit later and the chocolate was out of it’s system before any harm was done, but now that Christmas is approaching cases of ‘chocolate toxicity’ increase along with all those naughty Christmas treats. Most people are aware that chocolate is bad for dogs, even a relatively small amount of rich dark chocolate can make a small dog very sick. But chocolate is not the only evil – other foods that dogs don’t always tolerate include dried fruit such as grapes and raisins (avoid the Christmas pudding) which can cause quite serious kidney problems. Then there is all those rich fatty left-overs from Christmas dinner which are often tipped into the dog’s bowl triggering stomach upsets or pancreatitis in susceptible dogs.
Antifreeze can be devastating for cats Some festive plants can be quite toxic also – Poinsettias, Holly and Mistletoe are all potentially poisonous and even small amounts ingested can cause gastrointestinal problems. Mistletoe berries are particularly lethal. One of the nastiest toxins we see in winter though is antifreeze. It is supposedly quite sweet and cats are particularly prone to licking it up from driveways. It causes devastating kidney damage and is one of the saddest and most frustrating toxicities to treat. If you do spill any, make sure you clean it up thoroughly. If you have young cats this Christmas, you can expect them to have great fun with your Christmas tree. A Christmas tree is like an indoor climbing frame to a kitten and they love playing with the decorations – but tinsel, string and ribbons are all too common causes of intestinal blockages. The colder weather often exacerbates arthritis and hampers the mobility of older pets. Fortunately there is plenty that can be done for a stiff old dog or cat so if they are particularly affected this winter talk to us about treatment options. Ultimately Christmas should be a time of fun for you and your pets but one final thought – will you be one of the supposed 66% of pet owners who spend the same amount or more on presents for your pets than your partner? The sending of seasonal messages of goodwill is a truly ancient ritual with practical implications – isolated villages would send seasonal gifts to their neighbours as it paid to be polite to people who might feed you if supplies ran short. In Pagan Britain, good luck charms were exchanged at the winter solstice but it took a long time for the custom to evolve. The start of greetings cards as we now know them really came in the fourteenth century with the advent of wood-block printed New Year’s cards from Germany.

Even though the greetings card had German origins, our modern day Christmas card can be deemed a quintessentially English invention as the first real Christmas greeting cards were almost certainly the ‘Christmas Pieces’ made by children in the early 18th century. School children would write affectionate and often rhyming messages to their families on special paper with an engraved border and then decorate them further before taking or sending them home. These engraved Christmas papers are rare, extremely sought after examples of children’s artwork and can be viewed as a kind of ‘sampler’ as they were designed to show parents how well their handwriting improved over the past year. By 1820 colour was added to the engraved borders, making the pieces much more decorative.

What is believed to be one of the first mass-produced Christmas cards (above) dates back 170 years. The lithographed card caused a controversy in some quarters of Victorian English society when it was published in 1843 because it prominently features a child taking a sip from a glass of wine. Approximately 1,000 copies of the card were printed but only 10 have survived to modern times. The card was designed for Henry Cole by his friend, the English painter John Calcott Horsley (1808-1882). Cole wanted a ready-to-mail greeting card because he was too busy to engage in the traditional English custom of writing notes with Christmas/New Year’s greetings. The card pre-dated colour printing so it was hand-colored. It was divided into three panels – the centre panel depicting a family drinking wine at a celebration, the other panels showing charitable acts of feeding and clothing the poor. The greeting reads: “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You.”

If you want to add interest to your garden in winter how about adding a winter flowering shrub such as Mahonia, Daphne bholua, Hamamelis (witch hazel) or Sarcococca (Christmas box). These provide fragrance and colour as well as being an important food source for the birds in winter. Dress the house with stems from the garden, use the bare twisted branches of corkscrew hazel or willow for a vase. Use the red or yellow stems of Cornus (dogwood) or Salix (willow) which can be used inside or, alternatively, pushed into pots outside to add height to flowering displays (the RHS do this in their gardens and it’s very effective). The long ‘rope like’ stems of clematis can be used to fashion a front door wreath – use florists wire to add any sprigs of holly or other things like dried Hydrangea heads, cones, etc. Add a tartan bow and there you have it! As usual, I have looked for some Christmas gardening gifts and have come up with a lovely Sussex trug to allow you to float through the garden snipping roses at will – à la Downton Abbey. Or how about a squirrel proof, wire domed cloche which is large enough to cover pots with tulip bulbs in to stop the little blighters digging them all up (www.crocus.co.uk at £24.99)? Or, finally, a lovely pink Haws water can (also www.crocus.co.uk at £39.99). A good Christmas tree is the Fraser Fir tree (Abies Fraser). Apparently it not only doesn’t drop its needles but it also has that lovely Christmas tree smell which is something that I think is so important in a real tree. Cut a piece off the trunk and stick in a bucket of water for a few hours before erecting it (think of it like a vase of cut flowers). Keep it in a stand with a water reservoir and don’t site it by a radiator and it will look glorious all Christmas. Of course, if you really want to show how much you love your other half – why not buy them a garden replanting design, or makeover? This could ensure that your garden is easy maintenance in the future (and thus cut down on your workload – think about it!). See my website for details. HELP TO BUY We’re going to be hearing a lot about Help to Buy over the next 18 months as the coalition government promotes its flagship loan support scheme in the lead up to the next election. Whether it’s politically motivated, as many of the sceptics would have you believe, or it’s ‘for real’ is difficult to tell. If you’ve missed the coverage, ‘Help to Buy’ requires a first time house purchaser to find only 5% deposit with the government providing a guarantee to the lender for a further 15%. Interest in the scheme has been high since the government announced it was being extended to both new and existing properties, but too few of the big lenders have yet to embrace the idea. Supporters say that it will allow first time buyers into the housing market in a way that has not been possible for nearly a generation. They argue also that its main purpose is to stimulate growth after several years of stagnation. Whatever your view of the scheme, you have to applaud the efforts being made in that direction. Detractors are concerned that the increase in lending will push up house prices, particularly in popular locations. They go on to suggest that there will be major issues for borrowers when interest rates eventually rise. It’s all too easy for those who don’t have responsibility for generating growth to find reasons why any new initiative will fail. I’m firmly in the ‘glass half-full’ camp. Maybe 2014 will witness the economic growth, regeneration of the housing market and a whole new generation of firsttime buyers that we all want to see.

Have a great and safe Christmas! And so it is Christmas. Have a merry one – although don’t drink and drive, and don’t drink so much that it spoils it for you. We will be out in force again and I think I will be out on New Year’s Eve again – just building up the courage to tell Mrs. W. Its been a busy old last few months, what with the badger cull and some other important operations which has necessitated some juggling of resources, but our end of year report is quite encouraging. I can report a small drop in reported crime, around 4% which equates to 120 less victims than the same period last year (April to November), which is good news taken on top of our reduction in the last few years. Looking after the small details – housekeeping I call it – and caring that we do as good a job as possible for our community seems to make sure the bigger things look after themselves. An example would be how our licensing officer, Tim Waterhouse PC Nick Such, monitors the actions Cheltenham South LPT. Inspector of our pubs and clubs and any problem is addressed straight away – before it becomes a real issue. I will get Nick to write this column in the new year to let you all know about his future plans for making Cheltenham an even safer place to socialise. We have been carrying out lots of extra patrols recently around twilight in anticipation of an increase in burglaries after the clocks went back, and I’m pleased to report we haven’t experienced the potential problems of previous years. However, people are still making it easy for the thieves – please, please keep your doors and windows locked when you go out. And finally, you may have noticed the Constabulary’s mobile bus visiting The Promenade during October. This formed part of our public consultation into the roll out of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in Cheltenham. ANPR is an important tool in the fight against crime and can check any number plate against a database of records of vehicles that are of interest to the police. ANPR doesn’t just target motoring offences and can be used to catch all types of criminal who are using our roads as well as enhancing the policing of our streets.
