There’s lots going on in November with fireworks galore, Christmas preparation and Remembrance Sunday, which falls on the 9th November. Read inside about the Commandos – a fearless group who, among thousands of other service men and women, fought bravely to protect our country. This month’s ‘Did You Know?’ tells the story of Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot and there’s plenty of firework displays going on around the county – but spare a thought for our furry friends and check out our ‘Pet Care’ column for advice on how to keep them calm throughout the firework season. There’s the usual competitions for you to enter, as well as the chance to win Christmas party tickets courtesy of Manor By The Lake and Over Farm. There’s lots of great festive events inside so if you haven’t booked your Christmas party yet, what are you waiting for?!

Beef Wellington Serves 4 Ingredients: 10g dried porcini mushrooms; 50g butter; 2 shallots, finely chopped; 300g mixed mushrooms; 1 sprig thyme, leaves picked; 200ml Madeira; 2tbsp double cream; 1tbsp vegetable oil; 500g beef fillet; 250g ready-made all-butter puff pastry; 1 egg, beaten, to glaze; 1 tbsp poppy seeds. Method: 1 To make mushroom paste, soak dried porcini in 150ml boiling water for 20 minutes. Reserving the soaking water, squeeze mushrooms and finely chop. 2 Melt butter in frying pan over medium heat and cook shallots until pale and golden. Add mixed mushrooms, porcini and thyme, and cook until the mushrooms have softened. Pour in 150ml of the Madeira, season, turn up the heat and cook until the wine has evaporated. 3 Scoop three quarters of the mixture into a bowl and put the rest aside. Add the double cream to the bowl, season to taste and set aside. 4 Preheat oven and a flat baking sheet to 220 degrees. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a high heat and, when smoking, add the fillet and sear on all sides until well browned and crusted. Season generously and allow to cool. Don’t wash the pan yet – you’ll need it for the sauce. 5 Roll out the pastry to a rectangle a bit wider than your fillet, long enough to wrap it in and 3mm thick. Brush

it all over with beaten egg then spread the mushroom paste over it. Put the beef on top of the paste at one end of the pastry and carefully roll it up, making sure the join is on the bottom. Trim the edges and tuck them in to seal the parcel, using a fork to press the edges together. Brush the outside of the pastry with beaten egg and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Put the Wellington on the hot baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes, until golden, then rest for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Heat the pan in which you seared the beef and pour in the remaining Madeira. Add the reserved mushrooms and porcini liquid and allow to reduce slightly. Taste and season. Serve the Wellington with the sauce and vegetables of your choice.

Short Walks in the Cotswolds Biddlestone & Slaughterford 4¾ miles (7.5km) ~ 2½ hours Moderate
There are no major architectural masterpieces or panoramic views on this route – it is simply a very pleasant walk through small villages and very attractive meadows. Do not be put off by the road section, for the lanes are very quiet. The large village green and duck pond form the visual centrepiece of Biddestone, a spot that tempts you to linger. Slaughterford was probably named similarly to the other more famous Slaughters, as 'the ford by the sloe trees'. A Park the car in Biddestone. At the road junction by the pond, take the left road signposted to Hartham. Just past the church bear right along Challows Lane and follow the road to the road junction (Weavern Lane) at the bottom of the steep hill. 1 The earliest parts of Biddestone church were completed by the middle of the 12th century. Its most notable feature, however, is the Early English bell turret, the lower section built in the 13th century and the remainder in the 15th. B Turn right and follow the road above the river to the road junction by the bridge. Turn right to the sharp right hand bend just ahead. C Take the footpath ahead passing

onto the road and turn right to the White Hart Inn. Turn right between the buildings and across the river. After 200yds (180m) take the left fork and carry on uphill to a road junction. F Turn left, then after 300yds (275m), bear right at the next junction. Stay on the road until the next road junction. Turn right and follow the road back to Biddestone.

Remembering our heroes Thousands of people across the country will be coming together in November to remember our fallen and injured heroes who fought to protect us. We will take time to remember the sacrifices our brave Service men and women have made, not only in the First and Second World Wars, but in more recent conflicts too. There are monuments all over the country and abroad to commemorate these valiant people. Our picture on the right shows a monument that has a special local link. The statue – situated near Achnacarry 12 miles north of Fort William in Scotland – is of three members of the Commandos and was made by H.H. Martyn, a Gloucestershire-based company with a reputation for excellence that, amongst other great creations, produced sculptures for locations across the globe, including the Cenotaph in London (pictured below).
Feared by enemies across the world A plaque on the rear of the Commandos monument was unveiled on 13th November 1993 and tells the story of the special force’s creation, training and successes: In 1940, Britain’s spirits were low and an enemy invasion was threatened, which prompted Winston Churchill to order the creation of an elite force to raid the enemy-held coastline of Europe. The force, which was initially made up of volunteers from the British Army, was called ‘Commandos’. Over the next five years, the Commandos fought with such success that they became feared by all enemies. In 1942, the Commando Basic Training Centre was established in the Scottish Highlands where potential Commando soliders – who came from the British Army, Royal Marines and Allied Armies – underwent rigorous training. Some of the soldiers who trained there came from Gloucestershire, and it is known that some of them lost their lives during operations. Those who completed the training had the privilige of wearing the famous Green Beret, which was the mark of the highest standards of military training, physical endurance, selfdiscipline, bravery, initiative and courage.
The Local Answer
The Commandos earned an incredible 38 battle honours and many awards, including eight Victoria Crosses, but suffered significant losses with 1,700 soldiers losing their lives and many others seriously injured. This year’s ‘Remembrance Sunday’ is the 9th November and many organisations and churches will be conducting services and, in some places, parades. Why not express your gratitude for the sacrifices made and attend a service near you?

Sniff and Slurp with Nick Gay Here are my wine recommendations for the month; and make sure you take the chance to win a place on a wine tasting evening (worth £25) by answering the questions below. Two places are up for grabs every month, so don’t miss out! Chateau Moulin Lafitte, 2011 Not to be confused with its illustrious cousin Chateau Lafite, this Bordeaux is made from equal proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Plenty of red and black berry character, without harsh tannins – a great accompaniment to a lean beef dish such as Beef Wellington, the ‘Delicious Dish’ for this month. £9.99 Majestic (reduced to £7.49 if you buy two). Tabali Viognier Reserva, 2013 I am a huge fan of Viognier for its wonderful apricot, citrus and floral aromas and full body for a white wine – hard to believe that in the 1960s the variety was almost extinct. This Chilean example is off-dry and great with spicy or creamy dishes. £9.99 Tivoli Wines. Underwood Pinot Noir, 2012 This Pinot Noir from Oregon, North-West US, shows just how good some supermarket ownlabels have become. This particular one has lots of fruit flavour (raspberries and blueberries) with soft tannins. Versatile with food – from mushrooms to some sweet dishes! £12.99 Marks and Spencers. Nick is a wine educator offering fun, non-stuffy wine tasting events in Cheltenham. Gift vouchers available – great idea for Christmas! For more information about wine or the Oxford Chelt Wine School, email Nick at info@oxfordcheltwineschool.com, call 07858 220119 or visit www.oxfordcheltwineschool.com.

Mojito The Mojito was created on the island of Cuba and is one of the country’s cultural icons. Like the majority of cocktails, there are several stories surrounding its origin. One story links the drink to the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake, who was travelling to the city of Havana in the 1500s when an epidemic of scurvy and dysentery hit his ship. The local South American Indians were known to have remedies for tropical illnesses, so the ingredients were gathered from Cuba and formed into ‘El Draque’ – a cocktail of aguardiente (a crude form of rum), lime, sugar and mint. The lime juice would have helped significantly in fighting off the illnesses, and the mint and sugar helped to hide the harsh taste of the rum. Others say the drink was created thanks to the African slaves who worked in the Cuban sugar cane fields during the 19th century. Sugar cane juice called Guarapo was popular amongst the slaves and is often used to make mojitos. Ernest Hemingway became a big fan of the cocktail following a visit to a local Cuban bar called ‘La Bodeguita del Medio’. The mojito regained popularity in 2002 after it played a prominent role in a scene in the James Bond film ‘Die Another Day’, with James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) using the drink to seduce Jinx (Halle Berry). Ingredients: 1½ limes, cut into slices or wedges; 20 fresh mint leaves; 2½ tsp granulated sugar; 65ml white rum; splash of soda water or lemonade; ice; fresh mint sprig to garnish. Method: 1 Place the limes, mint and sugar into a highball glass and mash with the end of a clean rolling pin to bruise the mint and release the lime juice. 2 Add the ice and pour over the rum. 3 Add soda water or lemonade to taste and stir well. Garnish with a sprig of mint and serve.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY Why not have a Mocktail? For a non–alcoholic alternative, simply omit the rum.

Putting the ‘care’ in Care Home When you walk into Thirlestaine Park Care Home you instantly feel at home. The welcoming reception, cosy living areas and unique bedrooms all contribute to the warm feel of the environment. The architect who designed Thirlestaine Park only works on care homes and, therefore, has very specialist knowledge about the residents’ requirements. Everything has been thought of down to the tiniest detail and the individuality of each purpose built bedroom gives the feeling that the room has been designed specially for each person. The bedrooms are particularly spacious and tastefully decorated with plenty of room for personal touches to be added, and the members of staff are some of the friendliest people you could meet. While the atmosphere and environment are obviously important, Shaun McGrane (Home Manager) emphasises that the most important element of the home is the excellent care delivered. His aim is for Thirlestaine Park to become the best care home in Cheltenham. The home has a forged link with the Sue Ryder hospice in Leckhampton to ensure its nurses and carers receive the highest quality palliative care training and end-of-life care training. There is an emphasis on quality of life and a fulfilled living experience at Thirlestaine Park, and all the team want to provide plenty of activities and services for their residents to ensure spirits are high and maintain a naturally positive vibe. A fitness instructor will hold classes every week, keeping track of
each resident’s improvements so they can reach their optimum level of fitness. In addition, there will be a monthly Parkinson’s Clinic run by a Community Specialist Nurse, and plans are underway to implement a pilot scheme with Mindsong (a charitable organisation in Gloucestershire) in January 2015 where residents with dementia will be encouraged to express themselves through music – be it singing, dancing or playing an instrument. Furthermore, discussions are underway to set up a ‘Young at Heart’ Memory Club, which will support not only the residents living with dementia, but also their families and friends. These residents will be able to create a memory box outside their bedroom containing personal items that will help them recognise and remember which room is theirs. Finally, special monthly events, together with a programme of person-centred activities including baking, craftwork, games and two wonderful gardens to enjoy, add the finishing touches to make this the perfect care home. Thirlestaine Park really is a very special place and somewhere I would be extremely happy for any of my elderly relatives to live.

Turn that frown upside down! Ever thought about having acupuncture but been put off by your fear of needles? Need something to help get rid of those annoying frown lines? Facial Revitalisation may be the answer to your problems ... Our Sales Executive Amanda (pictured) jumped at the chance to try Facial Revitalisation Acupuncture in the hope of getting rid of a frown mark that has bugged her for years. For someone who has never had acupuncture before, the thought of needles being stuck in your skin can be quite daunting. Acupuncturist Steve Wilkinson (pictured right) has a very relaxed approach, which helps his clients to ‘chill out’ before he starts placing the needles in the target areas. Throughout the treatment Steve explained what he was about to do and how it would benefit Amanda. He also elaborated on the plethora of benefits that other types of acupuncture can offer – from treating musculo-skeletal problems such as back pain, neck and shoulder tension to helping with anxiety or stress, and even treating men and women who struggle with fertility. It was amazing to learn about the vast array of conditions that can be treated with just a few small needles – no matter what your problem, Steve believes acupuncture can help. Steve started by placing very fine needles in the areas Amanda wanted to eliminate lines – her forehead and between her eyebrows – as well as small tens pads on her cheeks that transmit mild electrical impulses to tone the muscles under the skin. Whilst the needles are working their magic, Steve often gives foot
massages or pulse diagnoses, as the needles can remain inserted for up to 40 minutes. Once removed, Steve performed a ‘Tui Na’ massage, which exercises the skin and further tones the facial muscles. He then used a ‘tiger warmer’ with a smokeless ‘moxa’, which is rubbed over the area being treated and helps bring the blood to the surface of the skin using heat. After this, he used a ‘jade roller’, which cools the skin down. Amanda said: “The warm sensation of the tiger warmer contrasted by the cool jade left my skin feeling fantastic and I had a lovely rosy glow to my cheeks.” Finally, Steve massaged Amanda’s face with bio-oil, which hydrates the skin. Despite there being no major visible difference in Amanda’s skin – apart from the healthy glow – she was thrilled that the small frown mark between her eyebrows had disappeared, and she felt extremely relaxed and refreshed. Though there may be noticable differences immediately, a longer course of treatment is advised in order to have a long-term effect. If you need an energy boost, relief from aches and pains, or simply want to relax, book an appointment with Steve now!

Transform your look and boost your confidence Alex Bowen has been providing semi-permanent makeup at Eden Health and Beauty Spa since qualifying with Finishing Touches in 2011. Her most popular treatment is eyebrows (see before and after images), with some customers having very sparse or no brows – this can be due to previous overplucking, medical conditions, or natural thinning due to age. Alex discusses the required shape and colour before treatment starts and finds the majority of clients opt for a natural hairstroke brow – as opposed to a block brow. This ensures they feel confident that if they choose to wear no other makeup, their eyebrows look good without being obvious. Alex says: “Semi-permanent makeup is a very satisfying treatment to be able to offer, as it can make a real difference for my clients’ self-esteem. Each client has their own individual reason for choosing permanent makeup and their requirements and expectations are fully
SEMIPERMANENT MAKE-UP
discussed prior to treatment to ensure the look they are seeking is met.” Other treatments that Alex provides include lip liner, full lip colour, eyeliner and – the most popular treatment – lash enhancement. This is perfect for ladies who like a nice thin crisp line through the lashes that never smudges even during swimming, other sports and hot weather. Alternatively, if your eyes tend to water when you are out in the elements during the winter or you struggle to apply your eyeliner, lash enhancement is a great solution. Each procedure that Alex provides requires two visits, 4-8 weeks apart. This way the colour can be built gradually and gently, and definition can be enhanced with the second visit. Both visits are included in the initial price, and a colour refresh is required annually (this should only require one visit at the cost of £150). If you think semi-permanent makeup is for you, give Alex a call.

Fireworks and thunderstorms Many dog owners will view the festivities of firework night and New Years with dread rather than joy, as they know the misery their four legged friends go through each year. A large number of dogs are turned into quivering wrecks by the first muffled bang from a distant firework or rumble of thunder. Various theories suggest that a dog’s more acute hearing and general sensitivity to loud noises can make them susceptible to significant anxiety. Some breeds seem to get more anxious than others and anxiety can also be affected by how old the dog was when they were first exposed to the noises. So what can you do if you have a seriously stressed pooch? Well, the first steps are to create a nice safe den at home, keep windows closed, curtains drawn and turn up some music or the TV to drown out noises from outside. Plan in advance to walk and feed your dog before it gets dark – if you can – but try not to fuss your pet if they show mild signs of anxiety, as you can reinforce the anxious behaviour.
Expose young puppies to loud noises If the anxiety is more significant, try a D.A.P plug-in diffuser (Dog Appeasement Pheromone) or one of the Serotonin (calming hormone) boosting dietary supplements that will increase their own natural hormone levels – for example, “Kalm Aid” or “Zylkene”. Failing that you can get stronger anti-anxiety medication from your vet that can help them to chill out when all else fails. In an ideal world we would recommend trying to expose young puppies to loud noises (in a controlled manner) before they get too old. Some studies have shown that puppies born later in the year are less likely to be stressed as they get to hear fireworks at a much earlier age. The best long-term treatment for noise phobias is counter-conditioning or habituation. This involves a long, steady process of exposing your dog to low level noises at the same time as doing something your dog really enjoys – playing, food, getting the lead for a walk, etc. By gradually increasing the noise levels over many weeks the dog starts to associate the noise with something positive and slowly stops being afraid or phobic. You can buy CDs with firework or thunderstorm noises specifically for curing dog phobias (“Sounds Scary CD”). In the long-term it is possible to cure a dog of noise phobia but it requires a long-term view and it is best to start the drawn out process of counter conditioning after the New Year!

At Leckhampton Bathrooms and Kitchens we present you with the finest quality bathrooms and kitchens available. Professional design service. Open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, 9am-1.30pm Saturday. Ample free parking.
rnative to glass! In the Kitchen
Perfect for use in Kitchens as panelling to create that instant wow factor. It can be laminated to conventional building panel such as MDF or similar, allowing the concealment of hinges, latches and other hardware. So can act as a beautiful fascia for doors. Can be used behind electric, ceramic and induction hobs as splashbacks and upstands too. A heat resistant 200mm high, glass effect upstand is available for gas hobs. Its ready availability and ease of installation reduces lead times and delays. It has higher heat distortion than conventional polymers (up to 100 ̊ Celsius) which means it has more applications. And what’s more, scratches can be polished out. We have our own dedicated staff ready to fit your fabulous splashback before Christmas!
In the Bathroom No grout makes cleaning easy with standard non abrasive household cleaners, giving bathrooms the look of colour back glass for a seamless modern look. Environmentally friendly, it comes in a range of designer colours and finishes that are at home in virtually any vertical application; straight, shaped or curved. It's ideal for wall panels, upstands and splashbacks.

In the Garden with Julia Smith
Tidy up those leaves Clear and compost fallen leaves from the lawn – you can leave them on the borders as long as they are not covering evergreens such as heathers, as the worms will pull them down into the soil over the winter and by spring they will be gone! Evergreen leaves like holly or laurel are something else and will not easily decompose – remove these from the borders. The deciduous leaves can be put into large compost bags with a few holes in – half fill a bag and tie the top then stack somewhere out of the way and use in the borders the following autumn. November is a good month to look back at how your garden was over the summer and to perhaps decide you would like to change some aspects of it. We are not talking necessarily about a complete garden makeover but even the best gardens need reworking as the years go on.
Clean and oil tools ready for Spring Perhaps a border is getting too congested, the winter garden has no redeeming features, or the garden looks stunning in spring and then fizzles out becoming boring for the rest of the year – all these can be rectified. Prune blackcurrants now removing two or three of the oldest branches down to the base. You can take cuttings really easily from blackcurrant bushes by cutting some healthy 25cm long shoots that have formed this year (make a slanted cut at the bottom so you know which way up they go) and simply sticking them in the ground – it really is that easy. If shrubs such as Cotinus (smoke bush) have become too large they can be cut back now by a third, providing the weather is still mild. This will produce a more compact shrub next year. Cotinus grown for their foliage only can be cut down to the ground in early spring, thus producing large spectacular leaves. When the mowing has come to a halt later this month, book your mower in to be serviced – this way you will beat the spring rush. Now is also a good time to clean and oil tools and send off secateurs to be sorted out if they are in a bit of a state. As I have mentioned before, I sent my Felcos off to a company in Leicester and they came back like new! I must get round to doing it again soon – although it may cost around £20, it is well worth it.

...write a personal statement Following on from last month’s article dissecting CVs, it seems only natural for my attention to shift this month onto the CV’s ugly cousin – the personal statement. Here lies two words that will bring fear and dread to thousands of students across the county, but fear not – advice is at hand. A personal statement is not dissimilar to a CV. The key difference is that a personal statement reads more like a short speech – it is a free-flowing piece of text, not bullet pointed and you don’t have to worry about making it appear eye-catching. One of the main problems people have when writing personal statements comes back to this problem of having to openly talk about yourself. It is human nature to find this difficult and it is tricky to write a personal statement without sounding too pretentious. Your job is to advertise yourself. It is important to sell yourself as an out-going, enthusiastic, self-believing individual – however, there is a fine line between being self-confident and being pretentious. University coordinators will want to read a personal statement that stands out for being confident – it is OK to write positively about yourself, just try not to show off too much!
Don’t be afraid of re-writing When I wrote my personal statement, everyone in the year found themselves re-writing it at least three or four times. This isn’t a bad thing. Initially, once your supervisor, tutor or head of Sixth Form sends it back to you with numerous mistakes, it can be deflating. But there is nothing wrong with re-writing it several times. I’m just starting to write my dissertation and we have already been told that whatever we write, our first draft will be rubbish – the best writing is refined. After a couple of re-writes, your personal statement will read very differently and you will see a significant improvement from your first draft. Try not to stress about it too much – after all, it is an opportunity to tell University staff how great you are and about all the fantastic things you’ve done and achieved. Take advantage of your chance to impress your future peers. twitter.com/tomorpin

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames – has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.”
Cloudy2Clear service Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount

of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Gunpowder, treason and plot For over 400 years bonfires have been lit on 5th November to mark the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. Did you know in 1605 a group of 13 young men decided to take violent action against King James I. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth I, who persecuted many English Catholics under her rule, people hoped her successor would be more tolerant of their religion. However, James I was not more tolerant and so the small group of men – under the leadership of Robert Catesby – decided to take violent action against him. Their idea was to blow up the Houses of Parliament, assassinating the King, the Prince of Wales and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics.

They gathered 36 barrels of gunpowder and stored them in a cellar under the House of Lords. As the plot developed, though, it became apparent that innocent people would be hurt or killed, leading to some members having second thoughts. One member sent an anonymous warning letter to his friend telling him to keep away from the Parliament on 5th November. This letter reached the King and plans were made to stop the conspirators. Guy Fawkes was found in the cellar when the authorities stormed it in the early hours of November 5th and he was caught, tortured and executed. From 5th November 1605, bonfires were burned to celebrate the safety of the King. This night has become known as Bonfire Night and the event is celebrated every year with burning effigies of Guy Fawkes and firework displays.

Albany Windows is a local family business. First and foremost we are installers, which is important because installation is the difficult bit and we are small enough to maintain close control over every job. But we are big enough to obtain supplies directly from large, high quality manufacturers of PVCu and aluminium windows, doors and conservatories.
WINDOW AND DOOR SYSTEMS
Whatever your requirements, we have glazing options for every need and budget, from a single window to a large conservatory. We supply some of Gloucestershire’s leading builders of quality homes with their glazing, but we also carry out double glazing and conservatory repairs and replace misted sealed units.

Winter is here, the heating is on and the fires are burning. But, with the rising cost of energy, many of us will be looking for ways to minimise the energy we use in our homes in order to save a few pennies – and save our planet. So, what can we do? There are many ways to save energy and most of them are pretty simple. Set the heating to switch off when you go to bed – the house will still be nice and warm while you’re dozing off but won’t stay on unnecessarily when you’re asleep. Also, set the heating to switch on just before you normally wake up so the house is warm by the time you get up. In addition, using a thicker duvet for the winter months avoids the need for a heater and using a hot water bottle to warm up your bed is much more efficient than using an electric blanket. The easiest way to stay warm and save energy during winter is simply to layer up. Fight the temptation to turn the heating on or up and instead wear an extra jumper, some cosy slippers and a scarf if it’s a bit chilly inside. It’s tempting to run a long, hot bath to warm up when you’ve been out in the cold all day but a quick shower can do the trick and save on the amount of water used. When showering, try to keep it short and sweet – reducing shower time by a few minutes each time can save hundreds of gallons of water every month. Keep curtains open in the day to let the sunshine heat your house for free, but shut them in the early evening and invest in draught excluders to help retain heat in your room during the night. You don’t need to go to the extreme of ‘Feng Shui‘-ing all the rooms in your house, but moving furniture around so that chairs and beds are located near radiators and away from windows can help you stay warmer. Furthermore, during the winter months hang clothes next to radiators instead of using the tumble drier in order to capitalise on the heating that is already being used. Finally, appliances that are left on standby mode use energy and waste a lot of money – average households spend anywhere between £50 and £100 in electricity each year for appliances on standby. Switch off at the socket and unplug all appliances that aren’t in use throughout the day and night – it could save you a lot of money over the year. None of these methods are difficult to do, but it can be difficult to remember to stick to them. Try putting up notes around the house as reminders until you get into a routine – you’ll soon be switching appliances off at the socket without thinking!

Tax return time Why is it that everything is left to the last minute when it comes to things we think we don’t want to do? Take filling in your tax return for example. By the time you read this article the deadline for submitting a paper return for the 2013-14 tax year will have passed (it was 31 October). Those who are planning to make an online submission (which is now everyone who hasn’t done one so far) have until 31 January 2015. Quite apart from the obvious benefit of knowing that you have got the job out of the way, there are several reasons why doing something before you are pressed into doing it during the last few days before a deadline can be beneficial to you, especially when it comes to tax returns.
The tax man could pay for Christmas 31st January is not only the deadline by which you have to file your tax return, it is also the date for paying any tax that you owe for last year plus a payment on account for next year. If you have a liability, or think you are likely to have one, why leave it until a few days before payment is due to establish how much you are going to have to find? If you don’t have the money readily in a bank account, it doesn’t give you long to sort out finance, does it? And what happens if HMRC owes you money? Surely it is better off in your bank account than the Treasury’s? Think what you could spend a repayment on. Christmas is just around the corner and the tax man could pay for all your shopping. How good would that be? Accountants all over the land work ridiculous hours every January to deal with those people leaving things to the last minute. In addition to helping people to comply with their obligations to file accurate and timely returns, we save clients money by making sure that they make all of the claims to which they are legitimately entitled. Bringing all your papers in at the last minute gives us less chance to spend the required time on such considerations. Give yourself a chance by giving us a chance and act now.

Local Policing with Tim Waterhouse
Cheltenham South LPT Inspector
Reduce your chances of being a victim By the time you read this a lot of our minds will be on the depressing thought of turning the clocks back – if you haven’t already – of the lack of sun and the need to get the big coats out of the cupboard. Joy! Apart from this, there is also the need to have a think about our security around our homes and possessions. As you can imagine, a lot of thought goes into our plans as a Constabulary as to how we can best use our resources to keep you as safe from harm as possible. With this in mind I asked our local lead on burglary, Inspector Owen Hughes, if he had a message for the good people of Cheltenham and the following is from him: “With the clocks going back and Winter just around the corner it is that time of year to start thinking about your home security. Timer switches are a useful affordable tool for those dark evenings before you return from work to deter would-be burglars or unwanted attention to your home. Simulated ‘fake TV’ lights are also useful, as they give the impression that the TV is on at home. Other options include the use of Smart-water kits to mark your property, which makes it easily identifiable. Please contact your local station for further information.

Free alternatives like simply leaving a light or a radio on can also help prevent you from becoming a burglary victim. It is also vital at this time of year to be a good neighbour – look out for each other and tell them if you’re going away on holiday. Parking is often in short supply in Cheltenham so a good idea is to invite your neighbours to park their second vehicle on your driveway when you are away from your home to give the impression someone is in. Crime in Gloucestershire is low but these small additional steps can easily help reduce your chances of being a victim, thereby keeping you safe.” So, the message is clear enough – don’t let the thieves have an easy run up to Christmas. Make it difficult for them to commit crime and you never know, they might have to get a job like the rest of us! Keep ‘em locked and keep safe.
