Chicken Tikka Skewers Enjoy these succulent skewers and fresh salad at a BBQ this summer Ingredients: 150g low fat natural yoghurt; 2 tbsp hot curry paste; 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cubed; 250g pack cherry tomatoes; 4 wholemeal chapattis, warmed to serve. For the cucumber salad: ½ cucumber, cubed; 1 red onion, thinly sliced; handful chopped coriander leaves; juice 1 lemon; 50g pack lamb’s lettuces or pea shoots; lemon slices to garnish. Method: 1 Put 8 wooden skewers in a bowl of water to soak. Mix the yoghurt and curry paste together in a bowl, then add the chicken. Place in the fridge and marinate for one hour. 2 In a large bowl, toss together the cucumber, red onion, coriander and lemon juice. Chill until ready to serve. 3 Shake off any excess marinade, then thread the pieces of chicken and cherry tomatoes onto the presoaked skewers. Cook under a medium grill for 15-20 minutes, turning from time to time, until cooked through and nicely browned.
4 Stir the lettuce/pea shoots into the salad and top with lemon slices, then divide between 4 plates. Top each serving with 2 skewers and serve with warm chapattis. 5 You can use any meat for this recipe – just always make sure it is cooked thoroughly before eating, especially if cooking on a BBQ.

Piña Colada A sweet, rum-based cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice, the Piña Colada’s origin is contested by three Puerto Rican bartenders. Ramón ‘Monchito’ Marrero Pérez claims to have first made the cocktail at the Caribe Hilton Hotel’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan in August 1952, using the newly-available Coco López cream of coconut. Coco López was developed in Puerto Rico in 1948 by Don Ramón López-Irizarry, hence the Puerto Rican connection and the 1952 account of the drink’s creation. Some say the drink did not acquire its name until the 1960s. Ricardo García, who also worked at the Caribe, says that it was he who invented the drink, while Ramón Portas Mingot says he created it in 1963 at the Barrachina Restaurant. The restaurant stands by his claim to this day. National Piña Colada Day is celebrated on the islands on 10th July. Ingredients: Ice; 35ml white rum; 1 tbsp coconut-flavoured rum; 50ml coconut cream; 50ml pineapple juice; 3-4 pineapple chunks; pineapple slice and maraschino cherry to garnish. Method: 1 Pour the two rums, coconut cream, pineapple juice and chunks of pineapple into a blender and blend until smooth. 2 To serve, pour into a cocktail glass and garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.

Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine in which fine, sterile needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points for therapeutic purposes. There is scientific evidence that shows the treatment can stimulate nerves under the skin and in muscle tissue. This has various effects in the body including release of natural pain-relieving substances such as endorphins and modification of pain signals in the spinal cord. Traditional Chinese acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy of “life force” know as Qi (pronounced “chee”) flows through the body in channels called meridians. Disease is believed to occur when Qi does not flow freely through the body. Acupuncture is used to restore the flow of Qi and restore health.
Acupuncture can be useful in the management of diseases Dogs have approximately 360 acupuncture points, which are located throughout the body. In a typical acupuncture session around 10 to 20 of these will be used. Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of conditions in the dog including muscular spasm, osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, spinal disc disease and nerve damage. It can also be useful in management of diseases such as vestibular disease, respiratory disease and gastrointestinal problems. Acupuncture treatment is generally well tolerated with many animals going to sleep during the treatment. A full assessment, including diagnosis if necessary, is carried out at the first session. At pet rehab we have treated a variety of animals with acupuncture including dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, skunks and birds. Page 8

Wildlife Matters with John Bromley
One swallow doesn’t make a summer “One swallow doesn’t make a summer” is an old saying, but by the time the air is filled with swallows, swifts and house martins you can be sure that summer isn’t too far away. Swallows prefer to nest in outbuildings such as barns and garages where there are nooks and crannies for them to use, whilst swifts need height such as old houses and church steeples so they can ‘drop’ out of the nest into the air. House martins, as their name suggests, nest on the outside walls of houses in the triangular angles under the eaves. Prior to the 1800s house martins predominately nested on cliff faces. During the 1800s the explosion of brick built houses across the country provided new opportunities for house martins to colonise more areas – even towns and cities, provided the air was clean enough to be filled with flying insects, which is their staple food.
The birds have an amber ‘at risk’ status Since the 1970s the number of house martins has steadily declined to the extent that the birds have now been given an amber ‘at risk’ status. Their total reliance on flying insects for food leaves them vulnerable to extended periods of cold wet weather and, as we all know, the unpredictability of our British summers means there is no guarantee of sunshine and an abundance of insects for them to feed on.
If where you live there is no naturally occurring mud available how about digging a small hollow in your garden and keeping the soil wet and muddy. Adults and children alike cannot fail to be enthralled watching the birds coming down to scoop up pellets of mud in their beaks. Typically it takes a pair of birds up to three weeks to build their nest. Once the main nest building period is over, keep a little mud available for birds to carry out running repairs to their nests.
Flying insects provide much needed food House martins are also reliant on access to mud for nest building and, whilst we cannot do much about the weather or flying insect numbers, we can always give a little helping hand here and there. Believe it or not we have just gone through a very dry winter and spring to the extent that many small ponds and water features have all but dried up. I walk through Springfield Park in Cheltenham most days and several of the ponds there are now rock hard with dry and cracked mud – totally useless for birds needing mud for nest building. Even the main pond contains just a fraction of its normal head of water for the time of year, but fortunately it is providing mud for house martins to build their nests.
If a nest with young in falls to the ground it is possible to encourage the parents to keep feeding their young. Place the nest in a strong box or wall hanging item as close to the original nest site as possible. If young birds fall from the nest, or the nest is too badly damaged, a substitute nest can be made using something like a lidded four litre icecream container. Make a hole of approximately 25mm x 60mm and roughen up the inside of the container below the hole with sandpaper to give the young birds a surface they can scramble up when the parents arrive with food. If space allows, why not plant a tree or two or some shrubs to provide shelter for flying insects, which in turn provide much needed food for house martins.

Interior Design with Vicky Walker
Finishing touches Once you have your room painted and furniture placed it is the ‘finishing touches’ that add personality to your interior and make it more personal to you. This can be achieved in the following ways.
leaves! I have to say I am not a keen fan of fake flowers, although saying that there are some great ones on the market and good for those who are not green fingered!
can be changed seasonally – you may wish to pack your wool cushions up now and replace with linen or cotton cushions, and replace a wool throw with a linen one for the spring.
2. Artwork
5. Lighting
Paintings and works of art are all very personal taste. Bare, boring walls get a real lift with a pop of colour from a colourful poster, collection of prints or simply family photos. Try to focus on a colour scheme or theme. Black and white photographs mounted in black frames, which can be purchased very reasonably from places like Ikea, can really make a statement. You could choose one large piece and create a focal point in the room. Picture lights over artwork really do bring paintings to life and it also creates another dimension to the room.
Re-visiting your lighting can help enhance the look of your room. Don’t see lights as just practical products – they can be used to create artistic effect. You can create a layered look by installing a combination of ceiling and wall lights, lamps and recessed lights. Alternatively, you could place uplighters in plant pots to throw light up to the ceiling, and these can easily be hidden behind a chair.
3. Collectables 1. Fresh flowers and plants This is a quick transformation and doesn’t have to be anything dramatic and expensive. Fresh flowers add colour to your room just by simply placing them on a coffee table or cabinet. You can change vases and the colour of the flowers so the room is always updated. A long clear vase filled with lily gives off a beautiful scent and will certainly lift your spirits and wow your guests. The way flowers are displayed can make a huge difference to the look of your room. If a simple plant pot is more your style then just ensure you have a fabulous container and you dust the Welding & Fabrication www.metalweld.co.uk

If you have a hobby and collect things such as books, teapots or sporting equipment then you can display the collection as a point of interest. However, you don’t need to display everything, as your home is not a museum and will soon look very cluttered. You can easily change displays around if you get bored and bring out different items to keep the room fresh and interesting.
4. Combine textures and feel A combination of cushions in different fabrics, textures and colours can add another dimension to sofas and chairs and stops them looking ‘flat’. You can mix patterns and colours. Colours and fabrics

Renewable Technologies LOCAL HANDYMAN – dispelling the myths YOUR Doing the jobs you simply can’t manage
Economic, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Renewable Technologies don’t have to be eyesores or excessively disruptive and can usually benefit any property, quickly saving the homeowner a great deal of money. This is the message that Pete Toth (pictured below) and his colleagues are working hard to convey, in and around the county. PBT are independent plumbers, heating, gas and oil engineers based in Gloucestershire with a passionate belief in, and extensive knowledge of, Renewable Technologies. Pete says, “in conversation with customers over the years, we have regularly come across the same myths, namely that Renewable Technologies are expensive and unsightly and require a huge amount of space or land. “People also often think that they only benefit newbuilds, which is simply untrue as so many technologies can now be added to existing systems. In offering free advice and consultations, over the phone or at the property, we hope to dispel these misconceptions and gain the opportunity to make homes as energy efficient, comfortable and economical as possible, for less money than you might think.” Some technologies recommended by PBT are: ● Solar Panels harness energy from the sun to heat the hot water in your house. Government grants are currently available to pay much of the initial investment on some installations. ● Heat Pumps take warmth from the air or ground, regardless of outdoor temperature, and turn it into energy to heat your water and your house. ● Underfloor Heating can be installed in conjunction with a heat pump, or simply by using your existing hot water source. It provides controllable heating evenly and efficiently, eliminating cold spots in a room and maximising space by avoiding the need for bulky radiators. If you are having building work done, thinking of changing your heating system or simply want to save money on utility bills, then maybe Pete and his team could open your eyes to valuable options that you hadn’t previously considered. For more information, call Pete or Laura on 01242 323923, email info@pbtrenewables.co.uk or visit www.pbtrenewables.co.uk. Page 28

SLEEPERS to enhance borders, rockeries and paths

In The Garden with Julia Smith
Polish up your garden in no time Now is a good time to prune early summer flowering shrubs like Philadelphus, Deutzia, Wiegela, and Rubus as they have finished flowering. Pruning will encourage new shoots to spring up from the base, and if you cut out about one in three of the thickest old branches at the bottom, these new ones will take their place and ensure the flowering doesn’t decrease. As with all shrubs when you’ve pruned, lightly fork in some pelleted chicken manure or balanced fertiliser – such as Growmore – around the base, water well and mulch with some compost or well rotted manure to give the plant a real boost. Don’t touch the stems with the mulch or they could start to rot. Try your hand at taking cuttings from perennial herbs such as Lavender, flowering side-shoots that are soft at the Rosemary and Sage. Take the cuttings tip and woody at the base – about 10cm early in the day and choose non- long. Pull away from the main stem, gently leaving a little bit of the bark still attached – these are called ‘heel’ cuttings. Take off the lower 5cm of leaves from the stem, dip the end into hormone rooting powder (garden centres have this) and then insert several of these cuttings into a small pot of gritty compost. Firm them in and water well, then cover the whole pot with a plastic bag (ensuring it doesn’t touch any of the leaves), label and place somewhere warm but out of direct sunlight. The cuttings should have rooted by late August. Spare a thought for the owners of the gardens open in the National Garden Scheme – imagine all the work they have

to do to prepare for visitors! I was thinking about this the other day and asked myself if I had 20 minutes to do something to tidy up my garden before visitors arrived, what would be the tasks to do? I would plump with weeding the front 10cm of the border leaving bare earth, cutting the grass and trimming the edges. Obviously some of you have more garden than me and this would take an hour or two, but it is the equivalent of a quick vacuum up and spraying polish around in the house – it really looks more than the time it takes and you can ignore the back of the border especially at this time of year when it is probably full to bursting with luxurious growth, unless you have the time.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames – has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.”
Cloudy2Clear service Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount

of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Albany Windows is a local family business. First and foremost we are installers, which is important because installation is the difficult bit and we are small enough to maintain close control over every job.
But we are big enough to obtain supplies directly from large, high quality manufacturers of PVCu and aluminium windows, doors and conservatories. WINDOW AND DOOR SYSTEMS
Whatever your requirements, we have glazing options for every need and budget, from a single window to a large conservatory. We supply some of Gloucestershire’s leading builders of quality homes with their glazing, but we also carry out double glazing and conservatory repairs and replace misted sealed units.

Money Matters with Roger Downes of Andorran
Shareholder agreements It’s easy when you start out in business with a colleague or even another member of the family to think of the positives and indeed, in many ways, you should. “This time next year, Rodney, we’ll be millionaires”. But, too few such entrepreneurs think enough about what can happen if it all goes terribly wrong and sadly I’ve seen a couple of these cases recently. It can be worse than a marital breakdown in some ways, but hopefully without the kids.
Write it down! There is something that you can and should do about it at the outset – write it down. Set up a shareholder agreement that establishes firstly how each party will behave in terms of day-to-day management of the business, and secondly what happens if the parties need to go their separate ways. Don’t get dragged into a debate about the costs of drawing up an agreement. Yes you will need a solicitor to draw up the document, but don’t begrudge them the money. They will charge you a lot more to sort out the unholy mess that you are likely to get into in the absence of an agreement.
Don’t look until you’ve finished! Solutions on ‘Index of Advertisers’ page.

Providing protection for those with a small stake in the business A good agreement will set out the duties of each party and confirm the parameters of delegated authority. It will specify what happens if one wants to leave and provide a basis for introducing newcomers to the company. It also provides protection for those who have only a small stake in the business. It doesn’t sound like rocket-science does it? It isn’t, but it could save major stress and costs in the event that your business rocket doesn’t fly true to its course.
