Rhubarb and vanilla tart A fresh tangy tart topped with tasty hazelnuts Ingredients: 500g rhubarb, cut into 11cm lengths; 75g caster sugar; 1tsp vanilla paste or seeds from 1 pod. For the pastry: 100g cold butter; 200g flour; 2tbsp caster sugar; 1 large egg, lightly whisked. For the filling: 1tbsp cornflour; 120g golden caster sugar; 300ml crème fraiche; 2 large eggs plus 1 yolk, beaten; tsp vanilla paste or seeds from 1 pod; 50g roasted hazelnuts, roughly chopped (optional).. Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the rhubarb on to a baking tray, sprinkle with sugar and dot with vanilla. Mix then arrange in a single layer and cover with foil. Bake for 12-15 minutes until just cooked, but holding its shape. Set aside. Why not visit Primrose Vale Farm Shop & PYO and make your tart with their delicious raspberry red rhubarb?

Hamburgers, Chicken, Fries and Milkshakes

2 To make the pastry, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs then add the sugar. Stir in the egg, then knead until the dough just comes together. Wrap in cling film and rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. 3 Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured worktop to about 5mm thick and a size slightly larger than a 12cm x 30cm fluted tart tin. Use to line the tin, pressing the pastry into the flutes. Trim the pastry then push the sides up about 3mm proud of the tin. 4 Chill for an hour then bake blind – cover with greaseproof paper, fill with baking beans and bake for 12 minutes. Remove the beans and bake for five more minutes until you get a pale biscuit colour. Turn the oven down to 150°C. 5 In a bowl, mix together the cornflour and the sugar so it doesn’t clump. Add the crème fraiche, eggs and vanilla, then mix. Pour into the tart tin then bake for 30 minutes or until the custard is just set with a slight wobble. 6 Turn the oven off and leave the door ajar for 15 minutes, then remove and cool on a wire rack. Top with rhubarb, reserving the syrup. Chill until ready to serve, sprinkle over the hazelnuts (if using) and serve with syrup.

PATESIANS CLUB HOSPITALITY

A day out at the Cricket Festival Great food and a very warm welcome!

Sangria Sangria is a typical beverage from Spain and Portugal, which usually consists of wine, chopped fruit, a sweetener, and a small amount of brandy. The fruit can include orange, lemon, lime, apple, peach, melon, berries, pineapple, grape, kiwifruit and mango. A sweetener such as honey, sugar, syrup or orange juice is often added to take any bitterness away from sour fruit or the brandy. Instead of brandy, other liquids such as Seltzer, Sprite or 7 Up may be added. The use of the word sangria in labels is now restricted under European law. Only sangria made in Spain and Portugal is allowed to be sold under that name after the European Parliament green-lighted new wine labeling was introduced in January 2014. Ingredients (to make 1 litre): Ice; ½ lemon; ½ orange; 2 tbsp white sugar; 500ml red wine; 250ml fresh orange juice; 250ml ginger ale; 50ml brandy; mint to garnish. Ice cubes Method: 1 Wash and chop the orange and lemon, including skins, and add to a pitcher. 2 Add the orange juice and sugar to the pitcher and stir with a wooden spoon to dissolve the sugar. 3 Add the ginger ale, red wine and brandy to the pitcher and stir. 4 Add ice cubes and serve. Garnish with a sprig of mint if preferred.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY Why not have a Mocktail? For a non-alcoholic alternative, mix 750ml cranberry juice, 500ml orange juice, 100ml fresh lemon juice, 30ml lime juice, 1 pear (diced) and 1 apple (diced). Page 6

Save money and help others in the process The Brasserie Group VIP Club was launched by Mannan Abdul in January 2014 and has gathered momentum ever since. Mannan is proud to announce that every penny of the membership fee will be split equally between two great charities – Hollie Gazzard Trust and Hope Foundation – to help people at home and abroad. Mannan said: “This really is a ‘win, win, win’ situation. It’s local people and businesses supporting each other through custom and discounts, and all of us getting great satisfaction in supporting G a z z a r d T r u s t people in less fortunate circumstances to ourselves both locally and across the seas. “There are many opportunities for the public to save money with national chain companies and online discount sites. Holidays & Travel with TLA Travel Expert

Natural landscapes and diverse wildlife Located near the equator in East Africa, Kenya has wonderfully diverse natural landscapes and wildlife, which are a significant part of why it is such a popular tourist destination. The main tourist season runs throughout the cool, dry months of June, July and August, and the hot, dry months of December and January. When the rains fall from March to May Kenya is much quieter, fewer tourists visit, accommodation prices fall, and some places close altogether. Wildlife-watching, khaki-clad tourists sat in open-top safari jeeps are the key selling point for Kenya’s tourist industry. The Maasai Mara is the conservation area to visit for the most dramatic game viewing and widest range of safari experiences. The immense wildebeest migration takes place during July through to October and

sees the movement of over two million animals – including gazelle, zebra and eland – from the Serengeti National Park to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. But this isn’t the only wildlife hotspot. The Samburu National Reserve showcases over 50 species of wild animals including oryx, zebra, giraffe and ostrich, while the Malindi Marine National Park is endowed with magnificent reefs and coral gardens that harbour sea turtles, whale sharks, dolphins and more.

Amazing alpine highlands There’s a great deal more to Kenya than animals, though. After a dramafilled safari, there’s nothing better than lounging around on beautiful whitesand beaches. The dazzling tropical coast has offerings for a whole range

of holiday-makers from those who enjoy a buzzing resort, to more chilled out customers who want to indulge in an exclusive island hideaway. If wildlife and beaches aren’t your thing, there are plenty of adventures to be had. The Rift Valley lakes are a natural area of outstanding beauty and offer a unique aquatic bird viewing spot; Amboseli provides stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro; while Mount Kenya features amazing alpine highlands and fantastic glacial topography of volcanic ridges. Accommodation varies from midrange safari lodges with buffetstyle cafeterias to private luxury tented camps, and all-inclusive beach resorts to exclusive luxury lodges. Whether you pack a bikini for the beach or binoculars for a safari, Kenya is sure to impress.

Itchy, scratchy pets With warmer weather invariably comes the summer itches, brought on by skin allergies and the increasing number of external parasites that prefer warmer conditions. Dogs start to nibble their feet, shake their ears or scratch excessively and cats will also scratch or over-groom themselves, sometimes to the point of baldness. It can be distressing to see Fido or Felix constantly licking or chewing themselves, or to wake to the sound of a leg thumping repeatedly on the floor as a paw obsessively rakes an itchy bit of skin. The classic ‘hot spot’ is an area of skin infection where a pet has made the skin so raw from self-trauma to the point of creating a weeping, oozing mess of discomfort. Anything that sore obviously requires veterinary attention, but there are things we can do to try to reduce the symptoms or need for vet visits. External parasite control – flea treatments. Dogs and cats with itchy skin should be on the most effective monthly flea control available. Even one flea bite is enough to set some pets off in a vicious scratching cycle and some flea treatments are either too weak or slow to work to prevent a flea bite. Some pets are allergic to flea saliva and it is this allergic reaction rather than the physical bite that causes all the problems. New flea tablets that can kill fleas within minutes of administering are the best way to eliminate fleas as a potential trigger. A hypoallergenic diet – food allergies aren’t that common but a diet trial is a relatively cheap and easy thing to do at home. Pick a strict hypoallergenic diet such as Purina HA or Royal Canin Hypoallergenic and try feeding this for 4-6 weeks – remember no other treats or supplements during the diet. Food allergies are hard to diagnose but the easiest to cure, and a strict food trial is the only way to eliminate food triggers. Supplement with omega fatty acids – extra omega oils can improve skin and coat health and reduce the need for stronger medication. A healthy skin barrier will reduce some of the symptoms of dermatitis. Anti-histamines can help – talk to your vet if these are appropriate, but they can provide a low level of antiinflammatory relief and are relatively safe. Medicated shampoos – regular washing with a soothing or antiseptic shampoo will help to wash off contact irritants and soothe itchy skin. There are a large number of medicated washes available for skin problems that can significantly reduce the symptoms of dry, itchy skin. Allergy testing – ultimately, if a pet has a recurring chronic itch, sometimes the answer is either a skin patch test or blood test to try to work out what pollen, grass or dust mite is setting the skin off. If the offending allergen can be diagnosed it is even possible to be desensitised to it by having a vaccine made up. Finally, if all else fails we’re lucky that there are an increasing number of very effective anti-inflammatory medications that will settle itchy skin. There are many new treatments and drugs that are well tolerated and very effective in calming itchy skin. If you’re worried about your pet’s skin, don’t let them scratch in silence! Go to your vet and discuss the best flea treatment, food, shampoo or medication for your pets problem.

Quick tips to lose weight and burn fat With summer starting, beach holidays booked and a high chance of dropping a few layers, now is the time you often see hurried diets being started, gyms starting to get busier and more joggers pounding the pavements. The media often prints articles on health and weight loss that are likely to confuse the reader, so here are some simple tips on how to lose weight and remain healthy this summer and onwards!

Sleep More Getting 7-10 hours sleep per night is vital for losing weight and staying in shape. Gaining fat has been shown to be very common in those who do not get enough ‘zzz’s’. This is due to hormone imbalances, which leads to an increased desire to eat when tired, and a stress response which in turn leads to higher fat accumulation. So turn out the lights (including phones) and relax!

Drink More Water Drinking water, especially before meals, is very beneficial for weight loss. Firstly, it helps to boost metabolism – the break down process for energy within the body. Drinking 500-700ml water before meals can help control hunger cravings, which means you consume fewer calories during a meal. Remember to avoid sugary drinks

B A R B E R Andy’s & Co barber shop, situated on Bath Road, has been providing men’s grooming in Cheltenham for over 50 years. The current team consists of owner Andy Savvides along with four other full time staff – including Andy’s son Zak, who is completing his apprenticeship – and a part-time stylist who works on Saturdays. Originally established in Cheltenham in 1966, the barber shop has been in Andy’s family for five generations – not many barbers or salons can boast this and Andy is extremely proud that his son wants to continue the family business. Andy has been supported by Steve Pickering for 30 years, who is a great help in running and managing the shop. Having been successful for so many years and becoming increasingly busy, the team has expanded in order to meet the growing customer demand. Andy’s & Co aren’t into ‘speed cutting’ – they take their time and “do it properly” so that their loyal customers remain loyal. Clients travel from all over the county and even further afield to the shop, because there is a high level of trust and a real personal feel. Andy describes men as “creatures of habit” and explains that there are three bites of the cherry that any good barber shop should know. He says: “Firstly, you need to provide a great hair cut – that’s the obvious part. The second bite is helping the client to feel as comfortable as possible and getting to know them. A hair cut is a very up close and personal service, so clients must be able to trust you and see you as an approachable, friendly person. Finally, a barber shop needs to be a nice place to go – somewhere you can visit to escape the realities of life”. It’s clear Andy’s & Co have nailed all three bites of the cherry – the atmosphere couldn’t be better! The core skills to provide a professional service to the ‘fashion

The secret of success? “It’s simple – we’re lucky in this job. We’re able to be creative, it’s extremely sociable, and every day is different. In this industry you have to love people and enjoy conversation, which is part of why our clients become our friends. I’ve been hairdressing for 20 years and have owned my first shop for 16 years. I love the whole experience, and it just keeps getting better. We’re decorating our salons all the time – changing the look and keeping it fresh – but the customers are always at the forefront. The salons must be a comfortable environment where clients can come in and relax for a while, whilst we pamper them and make them look beautiful. Training new staff and watching them work their way up my ladder is very special. We take three apprentices every year, which has amounted to training over 25 hairdressers with quality apprenticeships. My staff are loyal to me and most have been working with me for over 10 years – they have my back and I have theirs. A big thank you to my staff and customers – and watch this space!” Simon Greaves, Owner

Beauty school dropout Turn back time and what young girl didn’t want to be a ‘Pink Lady’ after seeing Grease? Most recognisable by their satin lined, powder pink, bomber style jackets partnered with pink blush on their cheeks, and you’ve got yourself the classic ‘Beauty School Drop Out’. One of the best things about this trend is its versatility to flatter a variety of skin tones and easy way of softening the more edgy look. In true Grease style, it works perfectly for those carefree ‘summer nights’ making use of the pale pink and blue palette, which is the palette for SS15. Think back to Valentine’s Day and you’ll recall the subtler of the looks – the ‘soft romantic’. Whether making a statement is your thing or not, this particular beauty trend allows you to make a choice between the two. Pastel makeup seems like the

obvious choice when it comes to spring beauty, but to compliment the season, you want a colour palette that looks and feels light, fresh and perfect for the sunny weather. So when packing your make up bag for holiday this summer, remember it’s all about supersaturated pastels that snap! Be bolder with it – don’t just follow the crowd with the conventional girly approach. Paint your lips with vivacious peaches, pinks that pop or a vibrant plum shade they won’t see coming. If beauty school’s not for you, make sure you graduate to the top of the style class instead!

offers an interesting and sophisticated contrast between the beard and the bun. Lots of stylists and grooming experts are now encouraging men to grow their hair. Generally, men with long hair tend to keep it in better condition than women, as women fiddle with it too much – myself included! To create the perfect topknot, be sure to apply a matte hair product to the ends to help keep control in the wind. A key look this season is experimenting with texture – think polished yet understated, appearing effortless and naturally messy. For men, the key is to style with your fingers. There’s no need for a hairbrush or a blow dry like women do, as this creates volume where you don’t want it – the idea is to create a relaxed look. So if you’ve got the beard, why not embrace the bun too?

Time for a topknot! Following last month’s article which focused on those longer locks, there’s now the option for men to wear their hair tied back. Enter the top knot – or as it’s often referred to, the ‘man bun’. Like the ‘Beauty School Drop Out’ trend, worn in individual styles, this look could suit almost anyone. I have previously covered the (excuse the pun) evergrowing trend of men sporting a beard and this look in particular

June at the Isbourne – a month full of well-being goodies! It is a very busy month, with no less than five Guest Speaker talks, not to mention the 80 or so other events we have lined up! A fantastic day workshop for children and their parents on 13th June will explain the work of Dr Masaru Emoto, the first person to make the ‘Power of Love and Gratitude’ visible. Children get free entry, so make sure to book! Through photographing water crystals and his teachings on how thoughts and words affect water, us and our environment, Emoto has left a legacy of work continuing through The Emoto Peace Project. On offer is a free copy of his book for children – ‘Messages in Water’ – a stunning slideshow and interactive experiments offered on the day by Hado Instructors and the head of the Emoto Peace Project Japan, Michiko Hayahsi. Jason Chan returns for a talk on 15th June at 7pm as part of our Monday nights series, with his ever-inspiring energy and light. Renowned Tai Chi Master Chan will open up a world in which you can connect to your own light and enable your life to be more abundant, fulfilling and joyful. Once you commit to cultivating this pure essence of you, your radiance will begin to shine and benefit all those you meet. New Hay House author Shann Nix Jones hails from the US, but can be found on a farm in Wales. Her intriguing story tells of how she fell in love with a Welsh goat farmer and learned how to use the healing powers of nature to cure her family’s ills and start a natural health phenomenon. Her diaries and spiritual insights have been documented in her best-selling book, ‘Secrets from Chuckling Goat’, available after her talk on 22nd June. Stewart Pearce has been a voice coach to an illustrious list of names including Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, Hugh Bonneville, Vanessa Redgrave and Simon Callow among many others. He is Master of Voice and a sound healer, who also gives extraordinarily rich workshops helping people to connect with the angels and beings of light. He teaches the energetic principles of the universe, and helps you understand how to raise your own vibration to be more creative and abundant. Style & Fashion with Sophie Perry

The festival season is here With Glastonbury just weeks away what will you be wearing this festival season? There is one fashion trend that will never fail to flood the fields of UK festivals – the boho frenzy. In stores expect to see lots of fringing, denim, tassels and bohemian prints – all holding nostalgia to the time these festivals originated, in particular include the classic bucket hat and Woodstock Music and Arts fair, which trackie tops, all resurrected from style began in 1969. icons the Stone Roses. Or for the more hipster crowd, crazy printed shirts and embroidered waistcoats worn with oversized harem pants. The classic 90s neon tracksuit is always a popular choice at festivals – thrift shops are a treasure trove for them. We’ve all been horrified by the thought of our parents wearing a bum bag on those unforgettable family holidays, and it just so happens that another un-cool 90s classic has become cool. A practical accessory for any festival goer with a secure pouch to store all your essentials. Check out ASOS’s eclectic collection online – with block colours, metallics, prints, sequins and vintage pieces there is a wide range for both men and women. Lycra catsuits, leotards and matching two piece sets Coincidently, the 70s is the are super cool and so prominent trend for men and much fun in eccentric womenswear Spring/ Summer 2015 colours and prints. McQueen’s Kabuki inspired design worn by fashion icon David Bowie. Rihanna, Beyonce and Rita Ora have all rocked this look on and off the stage. With the track record of British weather, wellies and raincoats are essential. Transparent macs have been trending for a few years now and continue to be a popular choice. Embellished with glitter, floral prints and contrast binding, you can pick these up in most high street stores. Men can keep it simple with block colours, and packaway ponchos are also a great alternative. If anything, the gold mine of festival clobber has to be charity shops. Filled with quirky gems, festivals are a time to let go of any fashion hold ups and have fun with what you’re wearing. After all, your personal hygiene goes out the window so why shouldn’t your perception of fashion!

Medical Health with Holly Prince

Being more deaf-aware Deaf Awareness Week in May highlighted the challenges that people who are hard of hearing face on a daily basis. Over 40,000 people in Gloucestershire use a hearing aid, but many people do not realise that even with the help of a hearing aid, listening is not the same as how we hear with our ears normally, and this can lead to everyday tasks being frustrating and problematic. There are many devices that can be fitted to enable people to hear better but, even with the latest technology, it still requires the brain to re-learn how to process sounds. People who are hard of hearing cannot hear the full range of frequencies of sound, and the patterns of amplification become distorted. Science does not yet fully understand the brain processes that are involved, but the brain decodes the sounds differently to normal hearing and a slightly different use of mental processes is involved.

confidence and decrease in independence. Too often we see people raising the volume of their voice when speaking to a person who is hearingimpaired. This, however, is not the best solution. It is not just the volume that is a problem, but the background noise and the brain trying to separate the sound of speech from the everyday noise that interferes with hearing. We can get a sense of what this is like when we are trying to hear a conversation in a crowded room or by a busy road. To help partially deaf people to make sense of what we are saying,

we need to be more aware of how we communicate. • Try to speak slower and more clearly • Face the person when you speak to them and make sure they can see your mouth • If possible, minimise the background noise in the environment around you Communication is a two-way process. So, with a greater understanding we can aim to converse more easily and understand the challenges faced by those who are hearing-impaired, and help to reduce them.

Background noise interferes with hearing When hearing is difficult, even things that we might normally take for granted can become an issue – making a phone call, using an intercom, hearing the doorbell, etc. And the loss of one of the main five senses can lead to other psychological issues such as lack of

Parenting & Guardianship with Roberta Smart

Recognise your parenting style Are you aware of how you parent? Do you follow your own parents’ style or are you trying something new? Here are nine ‘parenting styles’ as recognised by experts, all with different methodologies, offering varied outcomes for the children. Can you spot your style?

Authoritarian A strict, disciplined household. Military-style parenting featuring little warmth or space for ‘personality’ can create fearful children with low self-esteem with potential for aggressive behaviours as a means of venting frustration.

Authoritative Creates clear boundaries, has high but fair expectation of all children, with high levels of attention. Self expression is encouraged and independence fostered. Children are seen as happy and confident with good social skills and emotional control.

Neglectful or Uninvolved The least demanding and least responsive. As parents are highly self-involved, communication is at the lowest end. Only the basic needs of children are fulfilled, other developing needs being ignored or rejected.

Award-winning Letting Agency is expanding into Sales! Northwood in Cheltenham has been letting properties for over 12 years, whilst at the same time providing an exclusive sales service to their existing Landlords with investment properties. The family business run by mother and daughter duo Nikki and Patricia was established in order to provide a refreshing and different approach in an industry that was lacking in customer service care. Their company ethos is to provide a great service to clients with communication and feedback that are second-to-none. After years of buying, selling and renting properties, Nikki and Patricia realised that the agents they worked with weren’t offering an adequate service for the prices that were charged, and the poor communication and lack of feedback left them feeling frustrated. This gave the duo the confidence to buy into Northwood

and create Northwood Cheltenham Ltd. They cover the whole of Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury, offering the unique Guaranteed Scheme, which essentially means that Landlords will receive rent 52 weeks of the year even if the property is vacant or the tenant doesn’t pay. This allows the Landlord complete security and peace of mind that their income will remain constant.

A menu of tailor-made services Furthermore, Northwood guarantee to return the property in a good clean condition, paying for professional cleaning and excess on insurance policies if needed. And the best thing? There’s no catch! Northwood take all of the risk, making it a simple and secure way to rent your property.

Having succeeded in the Lettings side of the industry and achieving award winning status, Nikki and Patricia are now ready to tackle the selling side on a much larger scale than just existing Landlords. Neither of the duo have been moulded by working previously with estate agents, and due to their own life experiences, and with Nikki’s extensive experience in sales and marketing, they truly believe they can offer a refreshing and different service that will set them apart from most agencies who operate in a standardised way. Nikki says: “The bad press that agencies receive highlights the high cost and poor service the organisations have. We want to be different!” In order to differentiate from other agencies, Northwood are offering a menu of tailor-made services from which the client can select the level of service and cost they wish to pay. Northwood are launching with a limited introductory offer at a fixed selling fee of only £650+VAT*. This fantastic offer means that whether you’re selling a 2-bed or 5-bed house, a bungalow or a mansion, everybody pays the same price. Nikki says: “Why should people be penalised simply for having a bigger house? We don’t want to rip off customers, we just want to provide the highest quality service across the board and totally satisfy the needs of our clients.” Northwood offer a whole menu of services and tailor them to suit your needs. So, to find out more about their new and existing services or for a free no obligation valuation call Northwood. *Terms and conditions apply.

CHESS THE MUSICAL COMES TO CHELTENHAM

Promenade Productions will be presenting this fully staged production with a full Orchestra for the first time at The Bacon Theatre from Wednesday 8th to Saturday 11th July at 7.30pm each evening. Played out on an international stage and filled with political intrigue, CHESS the Musical also has a strong love interest – a romantic triangle between two players in a world Chess championship and the woman who manages one and falls in love with the other – and features the well-known numbers ‘I know him so well’, ‘One night in Bangkok’ and ‘Anthem’. Set in the 1970’s, a time when tensions created by the Cold War were easing, the storyline for CHESS is based on one of the most surreal of all Cold War confrontations – the Chess tournament between the USA and the USSR. The characters of the protagonists are loosely based on those of Victor Korchnoi and Bobby Fischer and the championship held in Merano, Italy.

Summer is here at The Bird and Deer Park Glorious views from the new Visitor Centre The Bird & Deer Park now boasts its own stunning Visitor Centre with glorious views overlooking the park, a lovely shop and of course light refreshments can be purchased. The Reindeer’s enclosure is the hot spot where last year Frozen and Blanco were born right in front of 40 building contractors – what a result! This year we are hoping that this great event will be seen by visitors from the balconies of the new centre. Rudolph, Prancer and Comet are just some of the great attractions that can be seen at The Bird Park all year around. The birds are nesting and hatching daily, reminding us that summer has now begun in earnest.

Bijou Birthday Parties For those of you that want to spend a different kind of day at the park, why not host your child’s special day in the glorious Gypsy Caravan or the Mad Hatters Marquee? Both locations are unique due to the wildlife around and the quality of the venues themselves – you could be the first to find somewhere really original to spend that special day. So book your child’s special birthday at the park to enjoy the shop, views and wildlife and have a truly unique birthday. Call 01452 812727 for more information or visit thebirdpark.com.

The Local Answer

For the last couple of months I’ve been writing about wild plants that wouldn’t look out of place on your dining table at meal times. Even though the petals of the Wild Rose – or Dog Rose – do make a refreshing cup of tea, which is supposed to aid digestion, I thought I might try something different this time. Historically, the use for Dog Rose petals has been mostly medicinal. But since you will no doubt be spotting this plant on your countryside dog walk and, like myself, wondering if you can eat it – the answer is yes, but I’ve yet to find a suitable culinary use to suit my taste buds. If you experiment and stumble upon something delicious, be sure to let me know via Twitter – @PottyWhite. To make home-made rose water, ideal for restoring your skin’s PH balance after a thorough cleanse, put enough distilled water to cover your harvest into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Place the rose petals into the boiling water and lightly simmer for a good 15 minutes – don’t be afraid to cram the petals in! Strain them from the boiling liquid into warm, sterilised, airtight jars and quickly close the lid to create an airtight seal as it cools. If you use cold jars they might crack from the sudden heat, so slowly warm them in the oven first to acclimatise them. If you’re the frugal sort, portion the liquid between small jars such as those which might have once contained salmon paste. Once cool, store in the fridge and they should keep for up to a month. Each jar should be enough for a good body massage. That being said, I hope the better half doesn’t read this otherwise I will have locked myself into servitude for the foreseeable future! If you’re not 100% sure that the plant you’re picking is safe for human consumption, don’t pick it. If you’re prone to food allergies, or pregnant, always seek medical advice before consuming anything foraged in the wild.

reat taste of summer at Primrose Vale

The ‘Pick Your Own’ season gets well under way in June and Primrose Vale has an abundance of delicious berries, currants and beans for all the family to enjoy collecting – a fantastic way to entertain the children and encourage them to eat healthily. You’ll probably end up doing most of the picking yourself, but tasting fruit and veg fresh from the fields is a delightful and positive experience for everyone. Primrose Vale Farm Shop & PYO has been developed over the years by owners Charlotte and Paul Keene to become a wonderful source of locally grown or reared produce – keeping food miles to a minimum and supporting nearby farmers simultaneously. There is a large selection of delicious food all year round. There’s also a great variety of crops for you to gather. The most popular fruits with customers at this time of year are strawberries and raspberries prominent towards the end of the month. You don’t have to damage your back in the process of picking them – raspberry bushes are tall and the strawberries are now grown on raised platforms, so there’s no slugs, bugs or mud either! To the side of the shop a recreational area has been created for customers to use during opening hours. Whether you need a sit down or your children want to use the sandpit, ride the vintage tractor, play on the swings and slides or see the rabbits, you are encouraged to use the facilities. In fact, Charlotte and Paul are more than happy for you to take your little ones to use the play area, even if you’re not picking or visiting the shop specifically. AUG

In The Garden with Julia Smith

Every garden should have roses The weather should now be milder and more settled (perhaps!), so you can transplant courgettes, marrows, pumpkins and squashes that have been sown inside, or if you haven’t got any, sow directly into a prepared piece of ground. Outdoor tomato plants can be put out now as well. This month the roses come into their own and – in my opinion – every garden should have roses in it. My favourite no nonsense rose for climbing is the ‘Blush Noisette’, as it is really healthy with lovely small pale pink scented flowers that carry on from May till October and needs virtually no pruning. I also love Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ which is smothered with the most deliciously scented pink flowers. The pink colour is a wonderful foil for bright blue and, as my door is that colour, I have a climbing ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ outside. I would say however that it needs a boost after its first flush of flowers, so give it some more rose food in late June to keep it going. ‘Morning Glory’ (Ipomoea), which is a climbing annual, looks lovely growing through it with glorious blue flowers.

This is a good time to sort out your long-term pots in the garden. Repot into slightly larger pots (don’t put directly into a huge pot from a small one, as the plants don’t grow well). Don’t use pots that curve inwards at the top either for these long-term plantings, as they are next to impossible to remove the rootball without breaking the pot. The very big pots are impractical to empty and redo, so with these you

can scrape off 10cm or so of soil and top up with fresh soil, something like John Innes No.3. Use slow release plant food pellets to make sure the plant is being fed (refer to the instructions on the packets as to the number needed). It is also a good idea to thin out some of the stems of plants such as delphiniums or phlox at this time. Take out about a quarter of the weakest ones at the base – this will ensure the remaining stems will be stronger. Any newly planted shrub or perennial will need watering in the first few weeks to keep it healthy until the roots grow. Don’t spray water on every day – use a can and give the surrounding ground a good soaking once a week. If the ground is dry use a whole can for each plant. Water in the early morning or mid-evening – not in the heat of the day. Look at your downpipes from the guttering and see if there is any way you can fit in a water butt to help conserve the water from your tap. Butts are available now that are very slim and will fit in small spaces.

It may be that you want a roman blind to pull up and down but have ‘dress’ curtains either side, which means that you would never pull them. Wave heading: contemporary heading which folds back into waves – this needs to be fitted onto a specialist track. Simple but needs to be calculated accurately.

Design your own Cotswolds cushion!

AND WIN A TRIP TO A DESIGN STUDIO IN GLASGOW! courtesy of Just Fabrics and Voyage Maison Just Fabrics have teamed up with Voyage Maison and are launching a great competition. They are asking entrants to design a cushion using any medium – oils, watercolours, pencil, anything. – taking their inspiration from the Cotswolds. The lucky winner will be flown to Voyage Maison’s design studio in Glasgow for an overnight stay and to work with a designer to finalise the cushion. Two runner ups will also have their designs made up into cushions. The competition will close on the 31st August 2015. Just Fabrics’ Online Interior Designer Alice says: “This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to see their design made into a cushion and sold in our retail stores and online.” Step 1 Get Creative! Design your Cotswolds cushion using any medium you like - oils, watercolours, pencil anything! The finished cushion will be 43cm x 43cm.

Step 2 Photograph your entry and upload online. (see website)

Step 3 A panel of experts will select a shortlist of 10 entries. We will then ask for the original design to be sent to us to view in person.

Step 4 The shortlist of 10 will be showcased on social media where 3 finalists will be chosen based on a combination of likes and a representative from Voyage Maison’s decision.

Further details can be found on the website – www.justfabrics.co.uk/competition – or contact Alice or Jane on 0845 4989043 for more information.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames – has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.”

Cloudy2Clear service Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount

of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Motoring with Christian Tilbury

Let the sunshine in Although the UK experiences more than its fair share of rain and temperatures not exactly favouring short sleeves, it’s still one of the biggest markets for convertible cars. Maybe it’s the clichéd wind-in-the-hair feeling that driving an open-top car provides and, if we’re brutally honest, the ‘showy’ nature of such cars that many find appealing, but with the recent advancements in car design it’s perhaps surprising that not many more people opt for top-down motoring. From a financial point of view they’ll always carry a premium over their closed roof counterparts, but the shortcomings of convertibles are now nothing compared to what they used to be. Gone are the days of a convertible having majorly compromised handling due to the loss of rigidity from having no roof, while draughty, ill-fitting hoods and the often

resulting damp interior are a thing of the past too. Buy a new convertible and it will be just as comfortable as its tin-top brethren, especially as a good deal of the open-top models now use a metal folding roof. The only downside is that when lowered, the roofs of such cars can take a healthy chunk out of boot space. However, if you like the idea of letting the sunshine in without compromising load-carrying ability or breaking the bank, there are a couple of worthwhile options. Trawl the internet for the most affordable new, fourseat, open-top models and it’ll throw up the Citroën DS3 and Fiat 500 – although strictly speaking, they’re not ‘full’ convertibles but have full-length fabric roofs. Of the two, it’s the Fiat that’s cheapest, coming in at circa £13,700 for the 500C

Pop Cabrio. It’s reasonably well equipped, with features including a CD/MP3 player, air conditioning, electric front windows and central locking, but it’s only a 1.2-litre 69hp petrol engine under the bonnet and alloy wheels are extra. Opt for the Citroën DS3 Cabrio and it’ll set you back at least £15,295. In return for their hard-earned cash, customers benefit from a decent specification that includes LED Daytime Running Lights, rear parking sensors and 16 inch black diamond alloy wheels. Like the Fiat, the most affordable DS3 Cabrio comes with a 1.2-litre engine. Neither car could be considered fast but what they lack in outright speed, they make up for in efficiency and low running costs. The Fiat for example returning nearly 60mpg on the combined fuel economy cycle. There are pros and cons for each but both are a safe bet – the Fiat having rocksolid residual values and the Citroën being voted ‘What Car?’ Magazine’s best opentop car for under £25,000 in 2014. So if you want a new convertible but are worried what a relatively limited budget will buy, don’t be – the outlook’s as sunny as it could be for affordable top-down motoring.

Keep up to date and on the go Juice Cell Portable mobile device chargers are common, they’re popular and useful too! Keeping it fresh, the 2000mAh Juice Cell available from littlepurplebox.co.uk takes a basic concept and applies quirky design. The unit comes with a built in standard and mini USB port, resulting in greater compatibility with a range of devices. Four micro indicator lights on the base of the unit illuminate to display the current capacity so you’ll always know if the cell is good to use, or if you need to charge up, which is activated by pressing the silver base button. The device comes with three connector heads (2 x sizes of mini USB and iPod/iPhone). As a test, I left the Juice Cell alone and it charged to capacity in a couple of hours. I then connected it to a completely dead BlackBerry mobile – battery charge was bumped to 75% in about an hour and I was good to go. Connections, build quality and finish were all excellent. Packaging was strong and clear instructions were included. For £9.99 the Juice Cell is good value for

money and does the job, making getting charged with a battery rather handy!

Save the Planet

with Kate Cole of Gloucestershire County Council’s Joint Waste Team

Wiggly worms are a winner There’s a worm at the bottom of my garden and his name is, well, I don’t quite rightly know. Because actually, there are thousands of worms at the bottom of my garden, but they’re not just any common or garden worms – they’re tiger worms and they’re living in my compost heap. While we may not ever be on first name terms, I’m pretty fond of my worms. They’re part of a wonderful world of natural recyclers, quietly helping me to convert my veg peelings and garden waste into a wonderful free resource for my garden. According to Wrap (the Waste and Resources Action Programme) just one compost bin can turn an average of 150kg of food and garden waste per household per year into wonderful compost. It doesn’t sound much on it’s own, I suppose, but when you consider there are around 275,000 households across Gloucestershire – many of them with the space to compost – that’s a whole lot of food and garden waste we could all deal with sustainably ourselves. During 2013/14 the County Council spent around £11 million landfilling waste, but around 30% of the average bin can easily be composted at home. Some people get a little worried about composting at home, having heard

murmerings that it needs “the right combination of greens and browns” or dark rumours that “it encourages vermin”. But with the right information it’s easy, and in Gloucestershire we have a team of dedicated volunteer Master Composters who spread the word about the benefits of home composting. The Master Composter initiative is led by UK charity Garden Organic and supported by the Gloucestershire Joint Waste Team, and it aims to encourage more of us to consider home composting by providing hands-on advice and practical help. Composting is not only a cost-effective way for householders to manage their garden waste, but is ultimately the most environmentally-friendly way to dispose of this and other suitable biodegradable materials, such as food, transforming them into a nutrient-rich soil improver. Gillian, one of the Gloucestershire Master Composters recently told me: “More than 30% of waste produced by an average household can be composted and while lots of households already compost, we want to encourage many more residents to take part. Composting food and garden waste at home not only cuts the amount of waste, which needs sending to costly landfill sites, but also

provides a peat-free boost for gardens.” She went on to say: “I have been composting at home for over twenty years now, and I am really keen to help others to start. It’s very easy – people seem to think it is complicated but if I can do it, anyone can!” You can buy a compost bin from as little as £8.49, which makes this an affordable way to do your bit for the environment. To view a range of bins and accessories, and to take advantage of the current ‘buy one get one half price’ offer on compost bins, visit recycleforgloucestershire.com. The Local Answer

Yes OK, it’s the name of one of my favourite, locallytrained racehorses, but this month ‘Money Matters’ is not off in search of gambling winnings. Well, maybe it is when I come to think about it, but not in the conventional sense of our four-legged friends at Prestbury Park. This month ‘Money Matters’ examines the risks attached to dealings in foreign currency. I have just returned from a busy trip to the US and in my normal style I left currency buying until the very last minute. Well, at the airport actually!

Plan early or be lucky! The dollar/sterling exchange rate had already moved against me in the short time that the currency market in the UK has had to react to the result of the General Election. But I had to be picked up from the floor when I was told the going rate at the airport was over 1.80. I waited and sorted it out when I got there. It set me thinking – how much money is made or lost simply by the timing of a foreign currency transaction? Anyone going on holiday is affected, as are all of our businesses that trade abroad. It’s that important to some of them that they employ full-time staff to manage their exposure. They’re not always right, mind you – the markets didn’t predict the election result any better than the pollsters did. So what to do? Plan early (do as I say not as I do obviously!) and make sure that there is a good cushion available to you should the movement be adverse. Or maybe simply be lucky!

Time to reflect and plan It’s all been a relatively normal month or so since I last wrote for the Local Answer. Business as usual, as they say. I spent the election day visiting many of the polling booths around Cheltenham to make sure no one was interfering in the smooth process of democracy. And to be fair, democracy was alive and well. I did have to ask an oldish chap to stop talking to people as they walked in. His tone was a little aggressive in his attempt to persuade people to vote for a particular party, so he decided to go and have his lunch! And then we got the result, which was interesting to say the least. It will be even more interesting to see how things progress as far as the Police are concerned over the next few months.

The usual summer challenges will soon be upon us Historically, this time of year is when the Police are not as stretched as at other times, giving us a little time to reflect and plan for the next few months. Before we know it the summer will be upon us with the usual challenges of increased anti-social behaviour, more alcohol being consumed with all that entails, and time for officers to take some leave, which always impacts on our resources. We try and spread leave applications throughout the year but clearly a lot of employees want leave when it’s warm and particularly when they have young children. One cannot blame them but it’s a balance we try and strike between operation requirements and home life. Talking of planning, I recently spent 30 minutes with my sergeants going through the matters that are currently impacting on Cheltenham. These range from some potential child sexual exploitation issues; some vulnerability problems with elderly victims who are being stolen from by young female ‘visitors’; a shoplifting spike in the out of town retail parks; anti-social behaviour at various places including Jenner Gardens and The Brewery; aggressive begging in the town centre; and drug activity in various places to name but a few. I told you it is business as usual! It all makes for a varied and interesting working week and hopefully my team and I can make a positive difference to the people of Cheltenham. That’s our aim – to help and keep people safe. So, keep safe yourselves without needing us please! And keep ‘em locked!
