Elderflower “Old girl, give me some of thy wood and I will give thee some of mine when I grow into a tree.” Perhaps not the most imaginative rhyme ever and not exactly a promise I can see anyone being able to deliver on (unless biology lessons at school were way off the mark), but it was once often recited whenever a person needed to prune or cut down an elder. The Elder Mother was a mythical being, generally considered to be a witch, and the elder tree’s self appointed guardian. Should anyone dare take without asking, she would curse that person with bad luck.
With a huge range of greeting cards and related gifts, a wide range of newspapers and magazines, stationery and an excellent selection of presents for all occasions, why go anywhere else? We have the largest wool and haberdashery stock in the area.
Don’t take too many flowers Whether you decide to recite the poem or not when harvesting elderflowers, make sure you don’t take too many if you want to come back later in the year for the berries. There are so many uses for elderflowers – most of which involve turning them into some form of beverage – that it’s worth looking online for some recipes. But I’m a simple soul and I don’t have a lot of space for fermenting more than one batch of anything per year. As a result, for a hassle free spring treat, I pick one or two flower heads and dip them in batter before lobbing them in the fryer until crispy. Serve with a light drizzle of honey and sit in the sunshine while eating. What better way to spend a lazy afternoon than having the tastes and smells of spring filling your senses and a cold beer dulling them. If you’re not 100% sure that the plant you’re picking is safe for human consumption, don’t pick it. If you’re prone to food allergies, or pregnant, always seek medical advice before consuming anything foraged in the wild. Page 4

Delicious Dish with Helen Kingscott
Chicken Curry Ingredients: 1kg boneless chicken breasts, cut into chunks; 1½ tsp ground black peppercorns; ½ tsp salt; 1½ tsp coriander seeds; 1tsp garam masala; 1tsp paprika; 1½ tsp turmeric; ½ tsp chilli flakes; 2 fresh tomatoes, sliced; 200g mushrooms, sliced; handful of fresh coriander, chopped; 3 bay leaves; 400ml water. For the sauce: 3tbsp sunflower oil; 2tsp cumin seeds; 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped; 1 head of garlic, cloves peeled and crushed; 200g tinned tomatoes; 5cm piece of root ginger, peeled and grated; 2 green chillies.
Method: 1 For the sauce: Heat the oil in a large pan, add the cumin seeds and fry for 10 seconds. Add the onions and fry until golden brown, then add the garlic and fry for 2-3 minutes. Drain the tomatoes (keep the juice to one side) and add them to the pan. Add the ginger and chillies and cook until the oil begins to separate. 2 Wash the chicken and drain well. 3 Put the chicken, peppercorns, salt, bay leaves, herbs and spices into the pan and cook over a fairly high heat. Keep turning the chicken and cook until the meat is sealed and browned and the liquid has evaporated. Add the juice from the tinned tomatoes and about 400ml water, bring to the boil and simmer over a medium heat for about 15 minutes or until the chicken is tender. Add the fresh tomatoes and mushrooms for the final 5 minutes of cooking time. 4 Sprinkle fresh coriander on top of the curry and serve with naan bread or boiled rice.

Daiquiri The Daiquiri has developed into a family of cocktails with rum, lime and a sweetener as the common denominators. Variations range from a banana daiquiri to a cranberry daiquiri, but the most popular variation is probably the strawberry daiquiri. It is believed to have been created in Cuba in the late 19th century as a medicinal treatment. However, it is also possible that the daiquiri was invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox, who ran out of gin whilst entertaining guests and had to use what was available – rum. Having remained localised for around 100 years, the daiquiri was introduced to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C. and became increasingly popular over the next few decades. In the 1940s whiskey, vodka and other spirits were hard to come by in America because of wartime rationing. However, thanks to Roosevelt’s Good Neighbour policy, which opened up trade and travel relations with Latin America, Cuba and the Caribbean, rum was more easily obtainable. Ingredients: Ice; 50ml light rum; 30ml fresh lime juice, 1 teaspoon simply syrup, lemon slice to garnish. Method: 1 Pour rum, lime juice and sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. 2 Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY Why not have a Mocktail? For a non–alcoholic fruity alternative, mix 25ml fresh lime juice, 75ml fresh blended strawberries, 2 tsp sugar and cracked ice. Page 6

reat taste of summer at Primrose Vale
The ‘Pick Your Own’ season gets well under way in June and Primrose Vale has an abundance of delicious berries, currants and beans for all the family to enjoy collecting – a fantastic way to entertain the children and encourage them to eat healthily. You’ll probably end up doing most of the picking yourself, but tasting fruit and veg fresh from the fields is a delightful and positive experience for everyone. Primrose Vale Farm Shop & PYO has been developed over the years by owners Charlotte and Paul Keene to become a wonderful source of locally grown or reared produce – keeping food miles to a minimum and supporting nearby farmers simultaneously. There is a large selection of delicious food all year round. There’s also a great variety of crops for you to gather. The most popular fruits with customers at this time of year are strawberries and raspberries prominent towards the end of the month. You don’t have to damage your back in the process of picking them – raspberry bushes are tall and the strawberries are now grown on raised platforms, so there’s no slugs, bugs or mud either! To the side of the shop a recreational area has been created for customers to use during opening hours. Whether you need a sit down or your children want to use the sandpit, ride the vintage tractor, play on the swings and slides or see the rabbits, you are encouraged to use the facilities. In fact, Charlotte and Paul are more than happy for you to take your little ones to use the play area, even if you’re not picking or visiting the shop specifically. AUG

Pet Care
with Oliver Wilkinson of Charlton Kings Vet Centre
Bee and wasp stings We all look forward to the warmer weather, but as much as we enjoy being out in the sun, so do the insects that have been hunkering down over the colder months. We see a lot of bee and wasp stings in the summer months. Dogs and cats like to chase moving objects, they’ll snatch at flies and spiders, and dogs will explore the garden and outdoors with their noses to the ground. The risk of a sting can be high and the younger and more inquisitive the pet, the more likely they will come across a stinging bug! The most common places to get stung are either on a pad or on the muzzle. A sting to the face can result in a dramatically swollen muzzle/lip, whereas a sting to the foot or pad might cause mild swelling, lameness or tenderness. Some dogs will get a more generalised allergic reaction with multiple raised skin lumps called wheals or hives that can appear all over their body.
Any sting should be monitored closely for signs of an allergic reaction Fortunately serious anaphylactic reactions are very rare. Severe signs could include difficulty breathing, diarrhoea, nausea, weakness or pale gums. In those situations prompt veterinary treatment is essential. If your pet has been bitten by a bee or wasp, in most cases anti-inflammatories or anti-histamines will treat the local signs of inflammation and prevent the further progression of symptoms. If a stinger is still in the skin then careful removal will prevent further release of the sting toxin. Any pet that has been stung should be monitored closely for signs of an allergic reaction. If a bee barb is seen, topical treatment with a weak solution of bicarbonate of soda can help to neutralise the toxin. Any significant swelling is best dealt with by a trip to your vet. Page 10

Wildlife Matters with John Bromley
The cunning old fox The European red fox is the commonest carnivore in this country and is a surprisingly successful species, despite centuries of being hunted for its fur or for sport. It is estimated that the countryside population is around 230,000, but what makes the fox so successful is its ability to live virtually anywhere and eat virtually anything – from worms and beetles, to voles and mice, and even fruit from apple and pear trees. Foxes didn’t really start moving into urban areas until the early 1900s, with towns like Bristol not being occupied until as late as the 1940s. The current urban population is thought to be around 33,000, with the highest densities in large cities such as London, Manchester and Liverpool.
Successful at adapting to new habitats Foxes are a northern hemisphere creature with native species ranging from North Africa to the Arctic Circle, across Europe, the Asian Steppes and Japan. The European red fox was introduced to the United States in the 1600s, quickly colonising North America
The Local Answer
and most of Canada. They were also introduced into Australia in the mid1800s for hunting, and just 100 years later had colonised the entire Australian continent, giving an indication of how successful a species they are at adapting to new habitats.
They fight to establish their social position Foxes mate in January or February and the vixen will produce a litter of 3-4 cubs around 53 days later. For the first two weeks or so the vixen stays in her den nursing the cubs, so she is totally reliant on the dog fox providing her with food. At 4-5 weeks the cubs will begin to leave their den and explore their habitat, playing, squabbling and fighting in the process. Even at this young age they can be quite vicious and it is not unknown for young cubs to fight to the death as they try to establish their social position. In the autumn many young dog foxes and some vixens will leave their home territory because they want to establish territories of their own, although some will stay ‘at home’ and form a social
family group. Many young foxes become road victims or are killed by dogs during this time of the year, and a great number die of starvation and cold in bad winters. Around 55% of foxes die in their first year and 80% die before they are three years old, although foxes kept in captivity can live for fourteen years or more. Unfortunately, the fox suffers from bad publicity and false myths, which make them disliked by many people and often viewed as vermin. The suggestion that foxes kill cats and dogs is totally wrong. An adult cat is more than a match for a fox and the fox will retreat quickly if threatened by a cat or dog.
An important species In folklore foxes are traditionally depicted as cunning and deceitful creatures, yet at the same time are viewed with respect and admiration. More recently foxes have become important characters in children’s books and films, and are frequently used in advertising and the media in general, giving some indication of how popular and important a species they are.

Style & Fashion with Carolyn Nicholls
Culottes are back! It is with trepidation that I have to confirm the news that culottes are indeed back and set to be a staple for 2016! Trepidation because I am old enough to remember them the first time around and mine weren’t great.
So many styles, colours, patterns and shapes That said, I have been checking out the take on culottes for the 21st century and I am so relieved to find they are amazing. There are so many styles and colours, patterns and shapes that there is a pair of culottes for everyone – phew! The best thing about culottes is that they provide a fabulous cross
between skirt and cropped trousers. This means they are suitable (in the right combination) for every occasion. If you have missed having a lovely skirt in your wardrobe as I have, then these are a really welcome addition. Want to wear culottes for work and yet still look professional? Go for a tailored pair in a neutral black or navy – chic and classic and ‘at home’ in any board room. For those lovely sunny afternoons, what about a cotton patterned jumpsuit or a wider flowing look in your favourite pastel shade?
The right fabric is important You will find the right shape culottes will be the same as your best skirt and cropped trousers’ shapes. So think about whether you can have pleats at the waist or whether a flat front is important for you. They come in straighter legs, A-line and bell bottom, so look back to your best jean style from the March article and go from there. There are lots of different lengths too and if you are really not certain if they are for you, go for a style that has plenty of fabric – this will look more like you are wearing a skirt. Remember fabric is important, so not too stiff if you are curvy! The Local Answer
Maximise the number of times you can wear them Once you know the best style, look for a pair that will see you through different occasions so you maximise the number of times you can wear them. Team them with flats, sneakers, stilettos and ankle boots. Wear with matching or coordinating tops. Then, when it’s a bit chilly or in the evening, add a statement jacket, waterfall cardigan or a beautiful wrap and your outfit will be complete.

Living Well Because The Isbourne Centre has 24 events for you in June alone – not to mention our ongoing regular classes – it is not easy to illustrate the diversity and reach of our courses and workshops in this space! To give you a flavour, on 4th June we are re-visited by Nicolas David Ngan, who will be enlightening you as to The True Purpose of Your Life. Maybe you feel you don’t fit in, that you’re different to others, or that there’s something special you are supposed to do but aren’t sure what? Nicolas is the co-founder of the Center for Conscious Ascension, and his aim is to help us understand our ‘soul contracts’, the progression of the soul and why we are here. In a not dissimilar vein, but with a different approach, New Hay House author Abby Wynne is excited to be coming on 6th June to speak about How to Reach Your Highest Potential. Many of us are just surviving day to day, rather than living the life we long for. A Shamanic energy healer who is based in Ireland, Abby will bring her knowledge together with psychotherapy to help you bridge this gap in your life!

Looking Good, Feeling Great with Matt Wagstaff
Post-exercise recovery Recovering properly following exercise is very important – as necessary in fact as exercising itself! Not recovering fully post-exercise can increase the likelihood of injury, increase stresses on the body and limit the body’s ability to cope with future exercise. So, whether its post marathon, triathlon or big gym session, follow the steps below to recover quickly and effectively!
Stretch Stretching following exercise has been shown to help muscle soreness, though researchers are unsure as to why. Muscles can often get tight following exercise due to the large amount of contractions they go through. Holding static stretching for up to 60 seconds after exercise helps to elongate shortened muscles tissues, as well as promoting more movement and blood flow. Try to relax into each stretch – this can be done in the hours after exercise, often best when fully relaxed, after the muscles have had some time to rest.
Post-workout nutrition What you eat and drink following exercise is vital in bringing the body back to its normal state called homeostasis. Restoring the muscles’ energy through good carbohydrates
The Local Answer
is most effective – these come in the form of starchy food such as rice or potatoes. As we exercise we create consistently small tears in muscle fibers, which following exercise – or sometimes during – need repairing. Ingesting a protein source is key to aiding the muscles’ recovery. The muscle fibers uptake amino acids – the building blocks of protein – after exercise to repair the muscle tissues. Higher protein foods come in the form or fish, meat, nuts and dairy products.
Self Myofascial release/ sports massage
pressure for sore muscles. Massage can also help with relaxation following intense exercise, restoring breathing rate and boasting immune function to help rid the body of lactic acid and toxins.
Sleep Getting a good night’s sleep is the optimal way to recover, especially if you have followed the above steps and helped the muscles to function better and taken on plenty of water and good recovery food. Sleep is when your body neurologically recovers and can fully relax. During this time it can assess the body’s state of depletion and initiate recovery of hormones, enhancing the body’s aerobic and anabolic processes ready for the next exercise session!
Self-Myofascial release or sports massage up to 24 hours following exercise benefits recovery by improving circulation, increasing nutrient-dense blood back to the fatigued muscles. It also helps to reduce tension in the muscles, restore normal tone (reducing muscle spasm) and stretch the fibers. Self-Myofascial release can be performed on ones self with a foam roller or similar device. This can have Active recovery similar effects to sports massage, Conversely to the above point, active though is often hard to adjust recovery relates to performing exercise at a reduced intensity to normal training or competitions. Active recovery is usually performed after a race/competition or sustained intense training schedule. This allows the body to reduce its metabolic or energy pathways, allowing an increased ability of the body to repair its self and recover prior to training hard or competing again. Active recovery is often performed using a different exercise to that which is the norm, such as swimming for a runner to reduce load on the joints, or performing relaxing yoga to alleviate muscle soreness and psychological recovery.

Harvey & Martin has decided to stock the new range as it aligns itself with Oway’s core belief that consumers should be able to make environmentally responsible choices without compromising on quality and results. “With over 15 years experience in the salon industry, we know what our clients are looking for. However, more and more people are now asking what’s in a product and are very careful about what they use on their hair and body. OWAY is completely transparent about its ingredients, which are all organically grown on the farm in Bologna or ethically sourced. People of Cheltenham no longer need to compromise.” To book an appointment or find out more, call 01242 255250.

Wake up your skin There’s no better way to relieve the post-party burn out than with a soothing facemask. A revitalising facemask contains the essential oils you need to wake up your skin, which not only smell nice, but it also encourages cell renewal and tones the skin. Facemasks are packed with vitamin E, which gently soothes tired and stressed skin – and let’s be honest, who doesn’t feel this way after a heavy night! Montagne Jeunesse do ‘kind to your skin’ facemasks that will leave it feeling brand new. Medical Health with Holly Prince
Headaches and migraines Headaches are one of the most common health complaints. There are several types and they can be brought on by various factors.
Headaches can disrupt daily activities Cluster headaches are a rare type of headache that often occur at the same time of day and at the same time each year. They can begin suddenly, without warning, causing an intense burning pain around the eyes. Other symptoms accompany the pain, such as a red eye, runny nose, or a sweaty face. These types of headaches can disrupt daily activities, and triggers can include heat, alcohol, and strong smells. Sinus headaches are also uncommon and they are usually caused by sinusitis. This is when the sinuses become inflamed when the nose becomes swollen due to infection, and the blockage creates a build-up of pressure, which creates a dull throbbing pain in the face. Tension headaches are the more general type of headache and the most common. They often affect both sides of the head and can also cause a feeling of tension in the neck and behind the eyes. They can last between half an hour and a few hours, or sometimes several days. Tension headaches
tend to be more common in teenagers and adult females, but anyone can get them. They can be triggered by dehydration, stress, not eating, or bad physical posture. Migraines are more severe than tension headaches, and are quite common. They cause a severe throbbing pain in the head, and other symptoms may also be experienced, such as nausea, vomiting, or hypersensitivity to light or sound. Their severity can impair functioning of daily activities. The cause of migraines is unknown, but they may be due to changes in blood vessels in the brain, plus triggers can include stress, tiredness or certain foods.
Triggers include stress, fatigue, noise and bright light Generally, headaches can be brought on by stress, tiredness, noise and bright light. Other causes include excess alcohol consumption, flu or hormonal

changes. Day-to-day headaches can usually be relieved with paracetamol or similar painkillers. Lifestyle changes such as getting more sleep and drinking more water can also help, as can relaxation techniques like gentle exercise, yoga, acupuncture or massage.
Visit your doctor if headaches are frequent Usually a headache is not a cause for concern and will dissipate naturally. However, they can also be signs of serious conditions including stroke, meningitis, or a brain tumour. More serious headaches often occur suddenly by, for example, coughing or sneezing, and they get worse over time, or they are accompanied by slurred speech, drowsiness, mental confusion, fever or a rash. It is advisable to visit your doctor if headaches are frequent or very painful, or if regular painkillers have no effect.

Parenting & Guardianship with Roberta Smart
When your child is a little different By the age of 4 you know your little one well and, maybe, something just doesn’t feel right? Your child won’t look you in the eye, prefers to play alone and gets easily agitated in company. Maybe you are getting a little concerned that their ‘love of trains’ has developed into something of an obsession, and although they can reel off the names and numbers of over 100 engines, you rarely manage to engage them in a conversation without one of you ending up frustrated. What should you be looking out for before they start school? And when should you reach out to your health professionals for advice and guidance? It is often between nursery and primary school that parents begin to observe traits often associated with
the autistic spectrum and Asperger impossible to converse with you syndrome. Below are some signs that about other subjects? Maybe they repeat lists and details yet cannot could be indicators of autism. answer a simple question such as Plays well with others ‘what would you like for a snack?’ The Does your child engage freely with frustration you feel can be a red flag other children? Can they imagine and is worth following up – trust your scenarios and adapt easily to an everinstinct! changing landscape of play? Children with Aspergers in particular may My child is gifted struggle with ‘free play’, preferring to Often a child can appear gifted in one cling to what they know – a favourite area yet fail to thrive in others. Being character or toy, repeating lines from great at maths and science, yet hardly their favourite cartoon or being grasping the concept of lining up for unwilling to change pace within a lunch or taking turns in PE can be great indicators that things are not game. quite as they seem.
Conversations – a two way street
A bad loser
Do they talk about their passion Kids on the autism spectrum thrive on repeatedly – whether you engage rules and routine and will often react with them or not – yet find it near very badly if someone else wasn’t playing fair. They take things literally and for these kids, a promise is a promise. Break yours at your peril! They can also be highly critical of others – so strong is their sense of self-righteousness and, of course, if this continues into adulthood, it can cause all sorts of problems.
Avoiding eye contact One of the earliest red flags for autism is an inability to make eye contact. As they grow these children will be so absorbed in their activity that they will not look up when addressed. Even when they are apparently a captive audience, they will gaze around or focus on a zip or toggle – anything to avoid the penetrating gaze of another pair of eyes. If you are concerned about your child, talk to your doctor or have a read about autism at www.autism.org.uk/about. Though your child may operate a little differently to others, this isn’t the end of the world – there is plenty of information, advice and support for those who are autistic or care for children who are.

Focus RS – master of all trades When you think of classic Fords – the Escort, the Capri, the Sierra – the iconic designs that instantly spring to mind are the ones that have been proud to wear the RS (Rallye Sport) badge. RS has allowed Rally fans throughout the years to buy a car equivalent to the ones they have watched their sporting heroes drive.
Beautifully composed It felt special when Ford invited me to the launch of their new All-Wheel Drive Ford Focus RS (MK3). I had heard the car was exceptional and, driving from the country house of Aynhoe Park to Silverstone, I soon discovered it was. The Ford Focus RS was beautifully composed on the road. Taking it out on the Stowe circuit, I then discovered a compelling track car with a stiff chassis and all the tools you required for the role in hand. The team at Ford Performance have worked hard to include all the iconic performance car elements. The exhaust on the new RS was totally redesigned several times to get the acoustics right and still meet global requirements. The large bore system is as straight through as possible to remove back pressure, and Ford Performance even had a
The Local Answer
strategy to ensure (in Sport, Track and Drift modes) the exhaust pops, baubles and bangs like a rally car when driven hard. The Ford Focus RS project team planned from day one to minimise drag, maximise cooling of both the engine and the Brembo brakes, and make the car handle as well as possible. The 350PS Ecoboost 2.3 litre engine in the RS has come from the new Mustang and has been specifically tuned for 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 165mph.
Improved agility and stability Good grip is essential for an iconic car and the new Focus RS is equipped with a clever Torque Vectoring system which, during cornering, transmits increased torque to the outer drive wheel. This helps to improve agility, stability and avoid understeer. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres (235/35 R19) work in beautiful harmony with the new technology. The Focus RS is a very professional piece of kit that makes an average driver look exceptional. It has set a new
bar for the five door performance hatchback. The hugely functional aerodynamic styling blends into the package, making a sophisticated looking car that I know will become a future classic.
A highly engineered and well-built performance car The Ford Focus RS costs £31,000, which is a fantastic price for such a highly engineered and well-built performance car. With fast Fords in high demand on the classic market, it has made the case to buy a new one even more compelling. Ford have a global winner with the Focus RS (3000 pre-orders before the first car left the plant) and I feel they can sit back for the rest of the year and watch the awards roll in. The passion for heritage, designing iconic cars and the legacy they leave is all pervading at Ford – we can expect many more stunning performance cars in the next few years.

CK Charlton Kings Parish Council History comes to life in Charlton Kings
Cheltenham Civic Society has awarded Charlton Kings Parish Council a commendation for their work in preserving the ancient village stocks. The 250 year old feature was in great danger of collapse and disintegration and would have been lost forever if urgent action had not been taken. The two year project involved obtaining the necessary planning and listed building consents as well as devising methods of support and preservative treatment to the decaying timber which would cause the minimum of change to the original structure. To mark the completion of the project a short ceremony was held on site which attracted a good turnout of local residents despite the inclement conditions. Locals learnt about the history of the stocks, justice then and now, and were entertained by a tale of the local resident punished in the stocks for playing pitch and toss instead of being in church!

As we get older, we all find it that little bit harder to climb in and out of the bath. Losing your balance, experiencing difficulty getting up from the toilet, and finding stiff taps difficult with arthritic hands are all problems that can be solved very easily with a little help from Lifestyle Bathrooms.
Achieve your perfect bathroom The company’s main clientele are retired, and often people who have difficulty getting around their home, as well as out and about. Lifestyle Bathrooms offer an ‘at home’ service whereby they visit your home to measure and design your bathroom to suit all your individual needs, the space available and your budget. From easy access showers and comfort height toilets, to single touch push button electronic showers, designer Rex (pictured) can help you to achieve your perfect bathroom. The team at Lifestyle Bathrooms want to enable their clients to remain in the comfort of their own homes for as long as possibile, and strive to create subtle designs that other family members or carers can use.
With access to a huge selection of quality brands, they are able to offer a wide range of extras, including coordinating tiles and decorative wallboards, radiators, light fittings and extractor fans. The Local Answer
In The Garden with Julia Smith
June would not be June without the rose June would not be June in England without the rose. Every garden should have at least one rose in it, and preferably several! The cheapest way to buy roses is to get them in winter as ‘Bare Root’ plants, which are exactly that. They arrive from the nursery in a plastic bag and need soaking for a couple of hours before planting in a well-prepared hole with plenty of organic matter and some mycorrhizal fungi granules – which are a fairly new idea and help the roots establish quicker.
A great selection available If you wish to put roses in the garden at this time of year there is no problem, as there is a really good selection available in pots from the nurseries or garden centres, and in a way it is easier to choose them when in bloom. Some roses only bloom once in the summer and some bloom continually, so that is something to check. Also some roses have no scent (who wants a rose with no scent?!). Some roses have more resistance to
The Local Answer
disease than others, and if you don’t like spraying plants with a fungicide, that is something that you should check. Some roses will put up with a degree of shade (no rose would like being in heavy shade) such as Madame Alfred Carriere – a lovely old white rose with a pink blush dating back to early Victorian times, which is great for a partially shaded wall, and will flower from June through into
Autumn. Good plants for growing under roses are things like perennial Geraniums, the silver foliage of Nepeta x faassenii, or Salvia nemorosa, and the more compact lavenders.
The ‘Chelsea Chop’ The ‘Chelsea Chop’ is a way of shortening perennials, which can become leggy. It promotes smaller, later flowers but in an increased quantity. It is done around the time of the Chelsea flower show (hence its name) – at the end of May or beginning of June. You can try it on lots of plants such as Sedums, Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Helenium and Asters. You could also cut back half the stems and leave the other half, thus lengthening the time of the flowering display – have a try and see how you get on. Derby day is the traditional time of year to give Box a first trim, although obviously it varies from area to area – but by 7th June frost is unlikely in Britain! Don’t cut it in hot sunshine as the leaves will get scorched. Feed with some bonemeal or slow release granules and water well when you have finished.

Save the Planet with Tamsin Bent
Get involved in practical conservation There are many ways in which we can reduce our impact on the environment. Most of our day to day decisions involve choices that affect what goes on around us – from our choice of whether to walk to work, to the food we eat. However, alongside these decisions there is something practical that all of us can do and that is to volunteer for an environmental or wildlife organisation.
Wildlife Trusts, which have more than 43,000 volunteers throughout the country, down to small independent local organisations like Stroud Valleys Project. Most organisations couldn’t carry out much of their vital wildlife work if it wasn’t for the input from volunteers. Volunteering brings communities together
Why not learn how to make bird and bat boxes or build otter holts? Or turn your hand to learning traditional skills such as coppicing, which creates great habitats for wildlife while providing a constant supply of sustainable wood. And you could even unleash your inner Poldark and learn how to scythe, which helps retain wildflower meadows that can be damaged by normal, regular mowing. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames – has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.”
Cloudy2Clear service Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount

of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Gadgets & Gizmos with Dan Wood
Never worry about lost property again Tile Fed up of losing your keys? Can’t work out where you left the TV remote? You may never have to worry again thanks to the Tile. Tile is a small Bluetooth attachment, which can be affixed to pretty much anything. If you find yourself searching around for the lost item, simply ‘call’ the Tile using the free iOS app and Tile will sound loudly until you get close enough to locate it – if it is within 100ft. Your app will also show the distance to the lost item and you can log into your account from any mobile phone, so don’t worry if yours isn’t with you! It also works the other way around. If you lose your mobile phone, simply double tap the Tile on one corner and your phone will ring too. For me the most exciting feature of Tile is the lost item function. If the item your Tile is attached to is lost or stolen, just show it as missing and all other Tile users’ accounts will ‘look out’ for it. If someone else’s mobile detects your missing Tile, they will

be discretely alerted and you are notified as to its location. For £20 on average, this is one cool gadget!
Noke Staying on the Bluetooth theme, relatively new to the market is the Noke – a keyless Bluetooth enabled padlock. Using the app for iOS or Android, set it up and secure what you choose. When you come within close proximity, Noke detects your mobile phone and unlocks without even having to open the app. You can manage accesses too, adding or removing authorised others so that it’ll unlock to anyone else you choose, or remain secure if you remove their access level. Battery life for the Noke is one whole year, and you can also manage the access history of the Noke padlock via the app so you can monitor when and by whom it was unlocked. The Noke is waterproof and as durable as any standard lock, so it’ll withstand the
Finally, if you’re a fan of freebies and getting the most for the least, try downloading the Google Opinion Rewards app. The free app will send you push questionnaires once a week on average and most consist of only three to four questions. Once completed (most taking less than 30 seconds), you’ll be awarded funds and you can then spend them in the Google app store. I usually get about 30p per survey and it soon adds up. Money for nothing!

Money Matters with Roger Downes of Andorran
Remain or leave? These are the questions that have been on everyone’s lips for months and will be on the ballot paper in just a few weeks’ time. I wouldn’t be as presumptuous as to suggest how you should vote or as brave as to predict the result, but I do know that it is probably the most important vote of a generation (with no apology to the Scots). There are numerous factors in play that will affect how you vote – sovereignty, immigration and pure emotion among them – but it is almost certainly trade and finance that will dictate where we finally opt to put our cross. So ‘Money Matters’ has been exploring the potential impact of both options.
There is insufficient data on which to base an informed decision The most glaring conclusion I can draw is that none of us know and that there is insufficient data on which to base an informed decision. Those favouring Brexit (couldn’t we have found a better word?!) will point to the billions of pounds that compliance with EU regulations costs British businesses every year and will suggest that we get little back in return. They point to the European Economic Area arrangements that the likes of Norway and Iceland have for trading with EU members without needing to join the club. But don’t be fooled, Norway and the other EEA members are required to accept most of the EU’s relevant rules, including business regulation and free movement of people. Striking trade deals with EU countries and those further afield will definitely be a major aspect of leaving. I’ve heard figures between 30 and 60 separate deals being required. Depending on your point of view, 60 can be a small number or 30 a large one. But it is probably the single most important thing that our politicians would have to negotiate if the leave lobby wins the day.
Both sides are glad we didn’t adopt the euro Both sides are united on at least one matter. They are glad that we didn’t adopt the Euro. God bless £ sterling; long may it be with us. Its value may fall significantly in the short term if we Brexit, but would that make our exports much more competitive and encourage more overseas companies to buy our goods? Logically it should and I know a number of people who consider that to be highly likely. That said, only around 10% of EU exports are to the UK, whereas half of our exports end up in EU countries. Would that make us vulnerable in our negotiations with our former partners? Who knows? The only clear conclusion is that you won’t have enough reliable data on which to make a financial judgement, so, unless you are going to spin a coin, maybe it’s best to vote with your emotions, whichever way they lean.

Before I forget, don’t forget to send your request for horse activity in your area to David.Satchwell@gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk, as he is awaiting some good suggestions. Anyway, back to business. I have just had a very productive meeting with several partners who are responsible for policing the licensing side of the races festival. It has been a slight concern over recent years that levels of drunkenness have increased around the March Festival, with punters going to the course to drink and watch a bit of horse racing as opposed to going to watch the racing and having a few pints. It will be a cultural change for many but is something that I think we owe to the history of the Festival and to the people of Cheltenham. And in addition to that, I heard that the Racecourse themselves have recently put out a press release stating their concerns also, so bingo, we have great minds thinking alike! Can we change the culture of Race Week? Let’s see how things progress.
Considerable time is spent on issues relating to mental health, vulnerability, and drink and drugs Another meeting I have just had (I go to a lot of meetings) was with a young man from a local school who had a propensity for bringing knifes into school. Because we have such a fantastic relationship with this particular school, we worked together and have come up with an excellent way of resolving the problem. We call such interventions as safeguarding and these probably take up the majority of our work. Neighbourhood policing has changed over the years – we have moved away from more traditional activities and now are all about safeguarding. We spend considerable time dealing with issues relating to mental health, vulnerability, and drink and drugs. As a result we work very closely with colleagues at the council and social services. I also met with members of the UK Border Agency and some associated partners around some illegal immigrants that have been working locally in the town centre. The plan will be to ensure prosecutions are carried out effectively and appropriately. More partnership work with a successful outcome. So, all in all, that’s a little snapshot of one morning’s work. Hopefully you will see what a varied and interesting job I have and for all our new recruits who will be in the process of trying to join the police – good luck. I hope to see you out and about soon!
