Cocktail Time with Lois Kingscott
Celebrations of Cheltenham
Mojito The Mojito was created on the island of Cuba and is one of the country’s cultural icons. Like the majority of cocktails, there are several stories surrounding its origin. One story links the drink to the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake, who was travelling to the city of Havana in the 1500s when an epidemic of scurvy and dysentery hit his ship. The local South American Indians were known to have remedies for tropical illnesses, so the ingredients were gathered from Cuba and formed into ‘El Draque’ – a cocktail of aguardiente (a crude form of rum), lime, sugar and mint. The lime juice would have helped significantly in fighting off the illnesses, and the mint and sugar helped to hide the harsh taste of the rum. Others say the drink was created thanks to the African slaves who worked in the Cuban sugar cane fields during the 19th century. Sugar cane juice called Guarapo was popular amongst the slaves and is often used to make mojitos. Ernest Hemingway became a big fan of the cocktail following a visit to a local Cuban bar called ‘La Bodeguita del Medio’. The mojito regained popularity in 2002 after it played a prominent role in a scene in the James Bond film ‘Die Another Day’, with James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) using the drink to seduce Jinx (Halle Berry). Ingredients: 1½ limes, cut into slices or wedges; 20 fresh mint leaves; 2½ tsp granulated sugar; 65ml white rum; splash of soda water or lemonade; ice; fresh mint sprig to garnish. Method: 1 Place the limes, mint and sugar into a highball glass and mash with the end of a clean rolling pin to bruise the mint and release the lime juice. 2 Add the ice and pour over the rum. 3 Add soda water or lemonade to taste and stir well. Garnish with a sprig of mint and serve.

Delicious Dishes with Helen Kingscott
Salmon and spinach puff pastry parcels These tasty little parcels are packed with goodness and flavour
Ingredients (serves 4): 225g fresh spinach; 4 salmon fillets; salt and pepper to taste; 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil; 1 clove garlic; 1 tbsp pine nuts, toasted; 1 egg; 2 x 320g puff pastry sheets. Method: 1 Wash the spinach. In a frying pan, heat the olive oil and a clove of garlic, lightly crushed. After a few seconds add the spinach. Season with salt and pepper, then cover. 2 Cook the spinach for a maximum of 3 or 4 minutes,
then remove the lid, remove the garlic and add the toasted pine nuts. Stir and remove from heat. 3 At this point, season the salmon fillets with salt and pepper. Sear the fillet on both sides in extra virgin olive oil. 4 Then prepare the pastry – you can make it yourself or purchase it ready made. This recipe uses ready made. 5 Cut the puff pastry sheets in half, place each salmon fillet towards the edge of each sheet and cover with the spinach and pine nuts. 6 Brush all around the pastry edge with egg, then fold the pastry over the salmon, sealing the edges with a round bladed knife. 7 Take a few small cuts in the dough so that the steam can escape during baking. Brush with egg. 8 Bake in 200ºC oven for 25 to 30 minutes. 9 When done, remove from the oven and serve.

Hawthorn
On orders over £20 ~ Collection only With this voucher on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday & Thursday
It can still be pretty slim pickings this early in the year for a forager, but dotted through hedgerows are little flashes of green as Hawthorn trees awake from their hibernation. The young leaves of the Hawthorn are edible and have a slightly nutty flavour. They can be used to garnish a salad, much in the same way you might do so with coriander or rocket, or as a herb in cooking. They can be eaten raw, though frankly I find eating them like this to be a pretty unpleasant affair, as the leaves can be quite woody if not picked early enough. If I’m completely honest, I’m not all that sold on the flavour either. But just like any cuisine, there is always going to be something you put in your mouth that makes you curl your lip in horror, but perhaps you might find Hawthorn leaves to be rather palatable. Go for a walk in this early spring air and try some for yourself! Just because I don’t like them doesn’t mean you won’t. If you’re not 100% sure that the plant you’re picking is safe for human consumption, don’t pick it. If you’re prone to food allergies, or pregnant, always seek medical advice before consuming anything foraged in the wild. Page 6

It’s usually at about this time of year, excluding this particular year where everything seems to have already sprung and died back, that the light at the end of winter’s dark tunnel should be in sight. Thoughts may occasionally drift to the garden shed where neglected tools, fading seed packets and wellies caked in last seasons dried mud lay forgotten in freshly spun cob webs. If you’re anything like me, you will try to put those trespassing notions of spring cleaning to one side for as long as possible and go back to nursing those mid winter munchies. But outside, Mother Nature is doing a little spring cleaning of her own by injecting some colour into a drab barren landscape.

Mayor of Cheltenham Duncan Smith with Helen Kingscott (left) of Cotswold RDA and Anna Mason of Maggie’s.
Ladies’ College to the rescue Just a couple of weeks before the Mayor of Cheltenham’s Civic Dinner was due to take place on 18th February, Mayor Duncan Smith and his personal assistant Jennie Ingram were presented with a problem – the venue, The Daffodil, had suddenly closed. Initial panic soon turned to great action as an alternative was being sourced – and up stepped Cheltenham Ladies’ College. Not only did the stunning Princess
Hall provide an ideal setting for the evening, the quality of the food and professionalism of David Runciman and his friendly team ensured a fantastic night for all in attendance. College commercial manager Heath Gunter said: “We were glad of the opportunity to support the Mayor and delighted to help his charities – they are important local causes.” A prominent event in his calendar, the Civic Dinner helped boost the fundraising Duncan has committed to during his mayoral term, with his chosen charities – Cotswold Riding for the Disabled and Maggie’s – both benefiting enormously through a raffle, fun games and an auction.
Guests were entertained with two musical sessions from local singersongwriter Hattie Briggs and cellist Asha McArthur. The Mayor’s next fundraiser is on Thursday 3rd March (7.30pm) at Pittville Pump Room when Wells Virtuosi from Wells Cathedral School perform A Spring Serenade. Tickets are only £10 and more details are in our What’s On listing – your support would be much appreciated.
The spirit of Cheltenham
Cotswold RDA’s Becky Andrews and Gino
The Mayor expressed huge thanks during his speech to those who attended to support the event, and to all the companies who kindly donated prizes. He also paid tribute to the spirit of the Cheltenham community and the way people strive to help others in need – a spirit demonstrated by the Ladies’ College.

A classic investment The last few years have seen a huge increase in the price of classic cars – a trend which gives no sign of letting up. A factor is the low UK interest rates meaning people with savings are looking to invest elsewhere. Classic cars or even future classics offer the opportunity to own a tangible asset and live a dream. They are an asset you can enjoy at weekends and on days off, whereas the latest investment bond is rather a dry subject to discuss in the pub.
Cracking investment that’s rocketed in value A friend of mine is a Car Parts Manager and over the years has built up a stable of future classics. He has a Ford Escort Cosworth, Ford Focus RS, Jaguar XJS convertible and a rather ropey early Range Rover. The Ford Escort has already proved a cracking investment and has rocketed in value from his initial £8,000 investment to well over £30,000. My friend has done several things to help his investment grow. One is collecting history to support the car. You can try contacting previous owners of the vehicle, which is a challenge – long standing dealerships can sometimes help, but the internet can prove a most valuable resource. A search on Ebay can often provide original sales brochures and advertising – elements that bring to life the past of the car. Internet auction sites can also be used to source original parts that are missing.
Tours, shows and track days Joining an owners club that represents your pride and joy can also open up a vast source of knowledge and before long your diary will soon fill up with tours, shows and even track days. Organisations such as HERO – the Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation (www.heroevents.eu) – hold fabulous Regularity and Classic Rallies throughout the year. I myself invested in a BMW M3 E46, seen as a benchmark car for its era, and with careful professional storage I have seen its market value increase. 2016 marks the centenary year for BMW as a marque, so my car will get a trip to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed and the BMW Club GB have arranged several large celebration events. I was recently in conversation with Fuzz Townsend who is the mechanic tour-de-force on the television programme Car SOS. He mentioned that some 1980s Vauxhalls had recently been through his workshop for restoration. Following on from this I saw a mint Vauxhall Nova at the first Bicester Heritage Sunday Scramble of 2016 so there must be some truth in these becoming an appreciated classic.
Make for some fun and memorable days With wise investment, a classic or future classic car can be fun, open up totally new friendships and make for some memorable days. One thing I have learnt is to buy a usable classic – something happy to wear the patina of age. This is why marques with a rallying heritage, such as the pre-996 Porsche 911’s or 60s/70s Alfa-Romeo’s, are so popular. They look great turning up at any event with mud splashes up the side and the odd bit of paint missing! The Local Answer

Contrast from top to bottom Buenos Aires, the home of sensuous tango and the Superclásico football derby; delicious asado and the sprawling La Recoleta cemetery where you can visit Evita’s tomb. This fascinating amalgam of the Old and New World is all these things and more. It’s a city of variety and diverse, often European-influenced, culture, with stunning architecture, from the famous Casa Rosada, to Santiago Calatrava’s strikingly asymmetric Puente de la Mujer bridge. And for relief from downtown’s buzz and its busy ‘Subte’ underground, the cool greens of waterside Reserva Ecologica Costanero Sur always refresh.
World-class empanadas, steak and wine When it comes to accommodation, there’s plenty of choice. Could it be the TripAdvisor-topping Alvear Palace near Recoleta? Or how about the boutique Kenton Palace on Defensa? Just minutes from Plaza del Mayo, this
Page 12
is where generations of porteños (‘port people’) have celebrated and mourned Argentina’s highs and lows. And if you’re feeling hungry you can enjoy world-class empanada, steak and superb Malbec and Torrontés wines. Whether dining in classy Palermo or local café-pizzerias like Vittorio on Hipolito Yrigoyen, the welcome is as warm as the Buenos Aires night.
Fly south to rugged Tierra del Fuego In contrast to the busy city life, why not leave 24-hour tango-radio behind and fly south to Ushuaia? Relax en route with Theroux’s book ‘Old Patagonian Express’ or the late Gustavo Cerati’s classic Argentine rock. In three hours you’re in Tierra del Fuego – the stepping-off point for Antarctica and self-styled ‘world’s southernmost city’ (even though Puerto Williams, across the Beagle Channel, is actually further south).

Book a window seat for the magnificent, if turbulent, approach, followed by a short cab ride to get you to the Hotel Albatros or Hotel Canal Beagle. Then enjoy a boat trip to see penguins, seals and guillemots close up before supper at Kalma Resto or Tia Elvira near Ushuaia’s heart.
Impressively rugged scenery Tierra del Fuego National Park is a must-see. A day’s excursion from Ushuaia immerses you in its impressively rugged scenery and wildlife, including Cauquenes (South American Geese) and grey foxes. Finally, before leaving, ride the Tren del Fin del Mundo steam train and take windblown selfies at the southernmost end of the 30,000 km Pan-American Highway. Impressive and different as they are, Buenos Aires and Tierra del Fuego are just two of many contrasting highlights you could enjoy in Argentina. Book your trip and be amazed.

Electric bikes, take charge & get going! No one would argue with the fact that switching your commute from a car ride to a bike ride creates a host of benefits for both you and your surrounding environment. Governments warn the public about heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity; all of these can be overcome by getting on your bike. Exercise, even at moderate levels, helps to reduce stress and depression as well as improve mood and self-esteem. But could it be the small drawbacks that are preventing the majority of people from making the
switch to cycling from other modes of transport? This is where the electric bike comes in. It provides all of the benefits of a regular bicycle, but with the added bonus of not arriving at work needing a shower since it helps to reduce the effort of pedalling uphill and into headwinds. You can still take exercise; you are still lowering your carbon footprint, and saving money. Of course the power assistance of electric bikes is what makes them so popular and extremely useful in this part of the world!
Who are Take Charge Bikes?
We are an award winning company with locations in Bath, Exeter, Woking and now Cheltenham. Looking Good, Feeling Great with Matt Wagstaff
The daily stretch Stretches are performed in many different ways – be it statically holding, dynamically moving or during yoga or Pilates. Stretching regularly is vital in keeping the body moving effectively, improving posture and general blood flow throughout the body. During daily life, through excess sitting, standing or poor movement patterns, we can develop poor posture and certain muscles are prone to getting tight. A stretch routine can help to counter these shortened muscles. Hold the stretches for 30-45 seconds each, making sure to breathe through the stretch, and gradually increase the stretch. At first the stretch may feel slightly uncomfortable, but this will ease as flexibility improves. Follow the stretches below, especially if you sit a lot, have rounded shoulders or a tilted pelvis.
1. The hip flexor or lunge stretch This stretch elongates the often over tight hipflexor muscles, often responsible for pulling the pelvis forward, especially with regular long sitting intervals.
3
1 3. The pectoral or doorway stretch The pectorals or chest muscles often tighten due to an anterior shoulder position through work posture or overuse of the anterior shoulder and chest musculature.
4. The side TFL stretch This stretch, performed in a seat or seated on the floor, stretches the TFL muscle, accompanied with the glute medius – a regular tight muscle in those with outer knee pain.
4 2 2. The upper trap stretch This stretch to either side releases the upper traps, which often become over worked on people who regularly hold a forward head posture. Pushing your head back (creating a double chin) regularly throughout the day can help encourage your neck back into an optimal position. The Local Answer
5. The upward facing dog This common yoga move helps to stretch out the abdominals, pectorals and hipflexors. Performing regular yoga classes run by trained practitioners will really help any postural 5 problems or tight muscles.

Style & Fashion with Carolyn Nicholls
How to find your best fit when those bellbottoms sneak back into fashion they will look great on you. For now bootcut or flare is your best style, although skinny jeans with flats are great too. An easy fit on the hip will work well for most body shapes. High waists do work as leg lengtheners and are great for fashion conscious teens, but for the more mature – think Simon Cowell!
Jeans have been a part of wardrobe basics for men and women for many years. We work in them, play in them, party in them – they have in many ways become the most important item in our wardrobe. That probably explains the everincreasing options now available and, if you are like me, the piles of new shades and styles that face you in the shops today are pretty daunting.
fit across to super skinny has me heading to the changing room piled high with alternatives – or more likely giving up and buying a tshirt instead! The truth is that jeans hug the figure and they highlight hips, waists, thighs, calves From comfort fit and ankles, bumps and to super skinny bulges too. So in an Long gone are the days when effort to make the task jeans were simply straight or of buying jeans that suit bootcut. The full range from comfort you easier for all, I have put together a few tips to help you find your best fit. Balance, balance, balance – your body shape dictates the fit and leg width so make sure you know yours. For those who are plus sized remember that ease is important for you and to choose your jeans fabric carefully – darker colours are best and stick to straight or narrow leg (but not too tight). Go for flat fronted styles, taking care that the pockets don’t bulge. If you are curvy then steer clear of tapered styles and choose low rise flare or trouser styles instead.
Leg cuffs are shortening The wider the leg the shorter your legs will look. Men shorter than 5’6” and women shorter than 5’3” will look their best in slim-fit or straight cuts, which will make their legs look longer. Avoid wide fitting flares and beware – leg cuffs are shortening too. On the other hand, the taller you are the more width you can add, so The Local Answer
The darker the colour, the smarter they look And if you think jeans cannot look smart then think again. The darker the colour, the smarter they look, so where the occasion allows you’ll find dark indigo straight and wellfitting jeans can easily look as good as smart trousers or chinos. Faded and torn jeans on the other hand are best left for less formal occasions. Finally, why not add a bit of your own personality to your jeans style. This is where faded and torn styles come into play and, if you like sparkles, go for it!

After a difficult life, and since her own near death experience in 2003, when she healed herself from meningitis septicaemia, she looked at how to enable others to do the same. Her techniques have helped many people overcome issues on physical, spiritual and emotional levels, and she is now dedicated to a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about coercive control. Conscious creativity is a practical approach to enable you to create from your true self, beyond your fears and anxieties. Julia McCutchen, author and intuitive mentor, brings you a workshop entitled Creative Awakening on 19th March to help you write or follow through on any creative process. The much-loved spiritual scientist Dr David Hamilton is back on 4th March with a talk around the idea that you are a spiritual being having a human experience, and not the other way round. With a first class honours degree in Chemistry and years in the pharmaceutical industry, he now writes books and gives talks using science to inspire, fusing spiritual wisdom and biology. The spiritual head of the Sivananda Yoga Centres in London, New York and Delhi offers us a ‘Journey Through the Chakras’ on 6th March. Blue eyed beauty If the last time you whipped out your trusty blue eye shadow was for the school disco, then it’s time to update your old palette with a new, more refined blue. From navy to turquoise, blue is back. When it comes to eye make up of 2016, a hint of this colour is so in right now – whether that be drawn across your lids or brushed up your lashes, it’s the colour of the season.
tend to be scared of if they’re going down the blue route. Granted, it’s a bit unconventional, but it actually works really well on lots of different skin tones and that’s why this trend can be for everyone. Be sure to balance the bold appearance of a thick, electric blue liner with a fresh, otherwise-makeup-free face. This trend stands out well enough on it’s own, so there’s no need to overdo it with trying to apply too much make-up. Keep the skin fresh faced and moisturised to give that post-shower glow, creating the perfect clean canvas for the blue to stand out against.
Use different shapes and shades to keep the look interesting
Embrace an old trend with a new edge Colour blocking isn’t only back in fashion, it’s back in beauty too and that means it needs to be back in your make-up bag. Revive your teenage self and embrace an old trend with a new edge. Turquoise blue is a shade that most people

There’s a shade for every individual style Otherwise known as ‘couture rock ’n roll’ at its finest, wearable and versatile. So if you want in, then start adding it to your everyday attire. Turquoise, royal, navy, ocean, sky, pastel… The shades are endless and there’s one for every individual style. Looking for an effortless way in? Nails are an easy entry point. The future’s looking bright this spring/summer, and this 2016 is looking blue…
A bright blue feline flick? Whyever not? It’s another great way to adapt this versatile trend and the perfect way to change up your cat-eye routine. Rotate in different shades of blue and various liner shapes to keep the look interesting. Think Studio 54 meets modern day diva! We saw bold-coloured eye make-up attempt to creep through last season, but it was a firm fixture on the catwalks this season, and now it’s all blue everything! Everyone from Marc Jacobs to Missoni, Jenny Packham to Chanel, this is (literally) one of the coolest revivals of the Nineties (yes, Nineties again!).

Medical Health with Holly Prince
Chocolate: is it good for you? There has been much debate in the health world over whether eating chocolate is beneficial to health or not. Let’s have a look at the pros and cons of one of our most popular treats. Chocolate is well-known for making people feel happy. This elated mood is due to the release of tryptophan, serotonin and endorphins, which are the chemicals that make us feel good. However, the high sugar content of chocolate can cause mood swings due to the sharp rise and fall of the bloodglucose level.
Aiding endurance and altertness Small amounts of caffeine, which is found in chocolate as well as coffee, can aid endurance and alertness, and decrease feelings of fatigue. However, too much caffeine can cause restlessness, and can lead to an increase in headaches or migraines. Cocoa butter, which is a main ingredient in chocolate, and particularly in dark chocolate, is rich in natural antioxidants, which are good for helping to prevent
premature aging and for protecting Chocolate is high in calories and saturated fat, which leads to weight cells from damage. gain and increases the risk of heart High in calories and disease. Even if the chocolate is low saturated fat in fat and calories, it will still contain Dark chocolate also contains small oils that can cause a build-up of fat traces of minerals such as iron, that puts pressure on the heart. More studies need to be conducted potassium and magnesium that lower cholesterol and blood on the effects of cocoa on pressure. However, the amount of cardiovascular health, as, so far, vitamins, minerals and nutrients in many have been inconclusive. Dark chocolate with at least 70% chocolate is so low that it is not all cocoa, is better than milk chocolate that beneficial. as it contains more pure cocoa and less fat and added sugar.
Chocolate is fine in moderation as a treat Overall, it seems that an occasional small amount of chocolate may be of benefit to the body, but be mindful that eating too much in one sitting is not good for you. Like everything in life, balance is best, so chocolate is fine in moderation as a treat. A good idea is to eat it after a meal so that you don’t consume too much, or with fresh fruit and nuts as part of a balanced diet. The Local Answer

Education
with Louise Evans of UCAS
Don’t panic – there’s still time! It’s not too late to apply for university in 2016 Do you wish that you’d applied to university this year? Had a change of plan? Had some doubts but now resolved to become a student? The good news is that even if you didn’t meet the main UCAS application deadline, there’s still plenty of time left to apply for a university place for 2016 – ‘late’ applications will be considered right up until 30 June, and after that you could even enter straight into Clearing, which is becoming an increasingly popular way for people to find a course once they know their A level results. So what do you need to do now?
1 Find the course you want to study Undergraduate higher education is a world of fascinating subjects that help you reach new careers and higher earnings. With a huge range of courses available, it's important to research what's right for you. Use the UCAS.com search tool to search by course title, location or by provider. And if you're not sure what kind of course to study yet, UCAS.com provides lots of handy advice, with info on course types and entry requirements. When you search for courses, read through the details to see if you like what’s on offer and how it’s taught. G Which modules are the most interesting and relevant to your career aspirations? G How many lectures are there and how much group work will be done in seminars? G What combination of exams, coursework or presentations is the course assessed by? G Who are the tutors and are they experts in areas you want to learn about? You could also arrange a visit to the provider. The Local Answer
2 Check there are vacancies We recommend you ask the universities whether they have vacancies before you apply – especially for courses with a 15 October deadline, such as medicine and dentistry, as it’s unusual for them to consider late applications because their courses are really competitive. 30 June, 18:00 (UK time) – the final deadline for late applications with course choices 20 September, 18:00 (UK time) – it’s still okay to apply by this date, but instead of choosing courses, you’ll be entered into ‘Clearing’ – the process universities and colleges use to fill any places they still have on their courses
4 Apply After you have found courses and are ready to apply: G Fill in your details, qualifications and course choices. G Write a personal statement to demonstrate you’ll be a good student. G Include your reference and pay your application fee (£12 for a single choice, £23 for more than one choice).
5 Track
This is the second stage of your UCAS application – and often lasts several months of waiting for decisions, interviews, offers and exam results. If you don’t get any offers, or if you reject your offers, you can still use UCAS Extra to apply for additional courses one at a time, until the 3 Register with UCAS deadline for Clearing. You can even It’s quick and easy to register with apply for the first time right up until UCAS. Just visit ucas.com and click on 20 September via Clearing. the register button in the top right Good luck and enjoy your course! hand corner.

Parenting & Guardianship with Roberta Smart
Do play with your food! It’s time to wean and wow are you ever in for a fun ride. Batten down the hatches and cover every surface in a wipe-clean cover – it’s going to get messy! Feeding infants is such a joy. You cook ‘yummy’, bland vegetables and puree them to within an inch of their life only to have baby refuse to have anything to do with them. Odd that – they had no such qualms when they tried to grab your chocolate bar and chow down on it.
great at clean-up during weaning – make sure to wipe those little fingers clean afterwards.
Eating together
The best advice I can offer here is – please eat with your child. Don’t get into the habit of ‘feeding time’ for baby and ‘mealtime’ for you – they are not an animal, they are a member of the family. Even if you are not hungry, sit with them, munch on salad, a few dips or bits of fruit. Show them how to eat, how to pick up food, how to bite and chew – believe me they will go from strength to strength. Oh, and food off mum’s plate is always tastier than the stuff in their bowl! Babies left to eat alone without a model will be more prone to refusing and using mealtimes as a battle Experimental play ground. If you can head this off at the Babies’ palettes are more sensitive pass you are onto a winner. so we definitely want to keep strong Out and about flavours until over one year old, but in the first six months consider Taking toddlers out to eat in public is feeding more as ‘experimental play’ also a great thing to do early on, and and less about nutrition. Believe me, most restaurants are kid friendly baby will not starve as long as milk these days. Demonstrating the use of feeding is constant and a range of ‘indoor voices’ and encouraging foods are always on offer. Regular quiet play using books, colouring or breast feeding with offerings of fruit personal toys will model the longterm expectations for the future. or protein will keep them on track. Babies love exploring their world However, if you think it’s OK for through their mouth so allow self your child to career around feeding wherever possible – try screaming as a toddler, chances having one spoon each, encourage are they will continue this baby to use fingers and be willing to behaviour as they grow, and laugh along as they discover the joys it’s harder to reign them in of mashed avocado and having their later than it is to start the way fingers licked by the dog! Dogs are you mean to go on. The Local Answer
Anything is possible As they grow introduce speciality foods and personal favourites – I’ve known 18-month olds eating curry and 6-year olds enjoying ‘French Style Mussels’ so anything is possible. Most importantly, enjoy the adventure. Before long they will discover ‘peer pressure’ and suddenly life will revolve around fast food and sugar, but if you build strong foundations now, you can relax, safe that they are well provided for and you’ve done a great job!

Should I feed my dog raw? Raw food diets have gained increasing popularity in recent years. They are not new though – the ‘BARF’ diet (bones and raw food) has been popular in Australia for over 20 years. It seems they have gained more traction in recent times, in parallel with human diets like the ‘Paleo diet’, and they share a common theory that the diet of our ancestors is more ‘natural’ and appropriate than the modern processed equivalent. Devotees of the raw diets claim dogs are healthier, have better coats and digestion, and cleaner teeth/fresher breath. Commercial raw diets are generally high in protein and fat and commonly contain either whole or ground bone. There are some concerns though about whether they are all they are cracked up to be. Nutritionally the high fat content can cause issues for pets with digestive sensitivities and they can trigger pancreatitis in susceptible dogs. The high protein levels are not suitable for dogs with kidney or liver impairment and the nutritional content has also come under scrutiny with some diets having a poor balance of calcium and phosphorus. Too little calcium can lead to bone and dental weakness, but too much can result in developmental problems like hip dysplasia and cartilage defects.
Many pros and cons of a raw diet Most worryingly are the high levels of bacteria in raw food diets. These are not typically a huge issue for dogs as their short and rapid digestive systems will tolerate much more bacterial contamination than ours. However, the implications to us as pet owners are more significant. A recent study found 10% of raw diets contained Salmonella and 20% Listeria. The handling and preparation of these foods for our pets poses a potential risk of human infection – pregnant women or those with immune suppression in particular should avoid handling these foods. Raw bones are a mixed blessing. There is no doubt grinding on a raw bone is a great way for a dog to clean its teeth, but teeth fractures can result, some dogs become very protective or aggressive over bones and too much bone can cause constipation or blockages. Finally they can be an expensive way to feed a pet. Commercial raw diets are usually significantly more expensive than a good quality dry dog food diet. The raw diet for dogs has an understandable appeal based on a perception that it is more natural and wholesome. However, years of selective breeding have changed dogs significantly from their wolf ancestor. The cooking of food reduces bacterial and parasite contamination. Good quality commercial dog foods have been carefully formulated to get the right balance of nutrients for the different life stages of dogs. Interestingly, many captive wolves are fed a diet that contains both elements of raw meat and bones and commercial dog food as it has been recognised that a diet that was limited to raw meat alone resulted in poorer health and nutrition!

The Chinese Art Market Despite the economic downturn in China, the recent auctions for ‘fresh to the market’ Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Islamic works of art have shown some strong results.
Interests and tastes are constantly changing Mallams are the only regional auctioneers holding dedicated specialist auctions. The director of the Asian department, Robin Fisher, speaks confidently about his forthcoming auction in April and the coming year. “A shortage of genuine works of art from the Far East has helped to keep the prices high. The mainland Chinese collectors and dealers are still buying strongly but their interests and tastes are constantly changing. I have been watching the market overall and the pieces that have a good provenance will still sell exceptionally well”.
brought along to Mallams’ regular Tuesday morning open appraisals. Alternatively, Robin Fisher can call to view the items in situ or digital images can be sent to robin.fisher@mallams.co.uk. The next auction of Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Islamic art will be held in Cheltenham on 27th and 28th April 2016. The closing date is Wednesday 6th April.
Entries consigned for future auctions hold great quality and rarity Mallams sold around a million pounds worth in 2015 and are expecting to improve on these figures in 2016 with the quality and rarity of the entries already consigned for the April and October auctions. Bespoke designs to fit your home and lifestyle Andrew Stevenson took over Space Master of Gloucester from a family friend in 2008, and has taken the familyrun business from strength to strength. The fitted bedroom specialists operate throughout Gloucestershire, as well as the borders of Worcester and Bristol. Andrew used to fit commercial kitchens for a living so has experience and is comfortable with the processes involved in designing and fitting bedroom furniture. Space Master bedroom furniture interiors are made to measure and fitted to your room to ensure they meet your exact specifications for quality and size. Since all wardrobes and bedroom furniture are made bespoke, there is room for customisation with materials and colours from the already large range of catalogue designs.
Utilise your bedroom space more effectively From the initial call out, to conducting a survey, placing an order and fitting the furniture, Andrew (pictured right) and his son Daniel carry out all stages of work so there are no hard sales or middle men to worry about. For your convenience they will come to your home to discuss designs and styles that fit your home and lifestyle. Given his experience in fitting, Andrew is able to advise on ways to utilise your bedroom space more effectively, which is especially helpful for small homes.
Space Master do more than bedroom furniture, too. Cupboards, cabinets, shelves, walk-in wardrobes and home offices can all be designed for domestic use, and commercial work such as designing and fitting storage systems is also available.
Kick-start your bedroom transformation To get your hands on a furniture catalogue and kickstart your bedroom transformation call Andrew on 01452 548152 to arrange an initial call out.

TAILORED BY DESIGN
A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED AND INSTALLED BATHROOM IS ONE OF THE KEY NECESSITIES FOR EVERY MODERN HOME. SEVERN VALE BATHROOMS IN GLOUCESTER OFFER UNIQUE AND TAILOR MADE DESIGN AND SERVICE. For some of us they are a haven of bubbles, rest and relaxation, for others they are the room where cleanliness is next to Godliness. But whether it’s a home spa of lotions and potions or a minimalist space with slick, gleaming design, bathrooms are the main room in the house where comfort, practicality and design are all equal partners. After over 25 years in the bathroom business, Severn Vale Bathrooms know that better than most. After years in the doldrums, when 1970s coloured suites and even carpet reigned, bathroom design had a shot in the arm when the property market started booming in the 1990s. Soon, those avocado baths were being swapped for white simplicity, showers became increasingly popular and grew in size and design options, and more people recognised that bathrooms were a priority in interior design. The bathroom, as it were, had arrived. Cue Severn Vale Bathrooms, who established themselves in Gloucester in 1990. The family-run business has been at the forefront of installing bathrooms for customers young and old, and they have witnessed the change in approach <irst hand.
The secret to their continuing success is the care and consideration they put into every bathroom. With Severn Vale Bathrooms customers get complete peace of mind, because they take care of the whole project from start to <inish – it’s the whole package from design, supply and installation. Once your new bathroom has been designed by Severn Vale Bathrooms, your entire installation and <itting work – including removal of the previous bathroom – is then undertaken by their own in-house team from start to <inish; there are no sub-contractors involved. The company is run by Julia Lomax and her daughters Claire Townsend and Nicola Laugharne-Jones. The Severn Vale team pride themselves on ensuring that every element of the design is tailored to suit their customers’ needs, and that their installers can provide a swift, easy transition from old to new. The company opened their extended showroom last year to mark their <irst quarter of a century. The space offers a wide range of options and bathrooms set–ups, not least of which is the discreet mobility range. This offers customers of
all ages discreet, unobtrusive mobility solutions, cleverly designed to ensure that practicality doesn’t intrude on their general use and look. As Claire says: “the company’s ethos is to always put our customers’ needs <irst and foremost. “It’s all about ease. We want our customers to have complete con<idence and to be happy with the service we provide. The life span of a bathroom is anywhere between 15-25 years, so it takes time and consideration as you will live with this for many years to come”. The company’s other unique selling point is they don’t tile – they use UPVC decorative wall panels. This is an alternative to tiles. The beauty of this product is there is no grout to discolour, it insulates the walls, reduces condensation, and comes in a vast range of colours and designs. If you are looking for top quality at a competitive price, Severn Vale Bathrooms is a great place to start. You’ll <ind the new attractive showroom in Pearce Way, off Bristol Road, in Gloucester, just behind the Ford dealership. It’s tucked away but well worth seeking out. Check out the extensive showroom at 18 Capitol Park, Pearce Way, Gloucester, GL2 5YD or call 01452 330852. www.severnvalebathrooms.co.uk.

Save the Planet with Caroline Bennett
Eliminate apple miles without a garden An apple from New Zealand can clock up 12,000 miles before it reaches the supermarket. Even British apples can go up and down the M6 a few times en route to the fruit bowl. You might have fantasised about owning your own orchard one day – pruning in the winter, checking the blossom in spring, eating apples straight from the tree. To most of us that sounds like a pipe dream. The average British garden size is shrinking rapidly and there are over two million UK households without a garden at all.
Community run orchards Before you pack your bags and move to a country with more space, consider joining a Community Orchard. There are over 80 community orchards or fruitshare initiatives happening right here in Gloucestershire. Some connect people who have space with those who can actually eat all the fruit. Others are orchards in public spaces,
The Local Answer
which are entirely community run. Some are informal, others have membership schemes and volunteering rates in exchange for shares of the harvest.
Lots of events across the county It’s not just apples. Plums, cherries, pears, quinces and nuts are some of the trees being taken care of by members of the community. There are city orchards and country orchards so there’s something for everyone. To find out more visit www.gloucestershireorchardtrust.org.uk. On this excellent website you can see a list of orchards, events across Gloucestershire and a host of other information. Events run by community orchard groups include wassailing (drinking cider and singing to promote the health of the trees), pruning workshops, juicing days and apple harvest celebrations. Here are some apple facts to get
your juices going: • Gloucestershire has a great history of apple growing with 185 apple varieties native to the county alone. • One large apple tree can produce a quarter of a tonne of fruit. • Apples can be stored for several months in dark, cool consistent conditions. • 10kg of apples will produce five litres of juice. How about them apples? Why not join in with the fruit revolution? Caroline is a member of the Gloucestershire Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP), a group of organisations aiming to help educate people in the county about the environment. In The Garden with Julia Smith
The greatest pleasures in being a gardener! Spring is definitely in the air! It is amazing how quickly everything starts to grow now, especially if we have a few sunny, mild days. Now is the time to prune your bush-roses (hybrid teas and floribundas) if you haven’t done so already. Cut off all the spindly twigs and anything dead, damaged or diseased. Cut to an outward facing bud leaving about 2.5cm of last year’s growth on weaker stems and a bit more on stronger stems. Shrub roses don’t need such drastic pruning and with these, if they are looking a bit congested, cut out about one third of the thickest oldest branches
at the base with a pruning saw, thus encouraging new shoots to emerge. Take about 10cm off the top of the remaining stems to finish. friend – after all that is one of the Pot extras up and greatest give to a friend pleasures in being a gardener! Now is also a good time to divide Agapanthus rarely need dividing – Hostas if they are getting too big. Dig probably only every five years or so them up and slice them into when they start flowering, less than sections, making sure each has some before. If this is the case with yours shoots at the top. Replant them, divide them now, cutting through enriching the soil with some congested clumps with a sharp compost and bonemeal and, if you spade and replanting in nice freehave too many bits to plant in your draining soil. They will take a year to garden, pot them up and give to a recover properly so don’t panic if they don’t flower in the first season. The autumn sown sweet peas that you have sown in pots can now be planted into their final flowering position. Make sure the soil has plenty of organic material dug into it, erect a wigwam of canes and they will put on a wonderful show and provide plenty of cut flowers for the house.
Let in light and air into the centre of the plant Evergreen grasses such as Festuca glauca or Cortaderia selloana (pampas grass) are pruned annually in early spring. Smaller grasses are lightly pruned to remove dead leaf tips (a pair of scissors does this very easily), whilst the big pampas grasses need very thick gloves and possibly hedge trimmers to cut them down hard to the base. Rake out dead material from the base to let in light and air into the centre of the plant. The Local Answer

Wildlife Matters with John Bromley
Beneficial pest control for your garden Much as frogs and toads are associated with water, they actually spend most of their lives away from it, preferring cool damp areas such as ditches, long grass and under sheds and compost bins. They are among the earliest of our wild creatures to start their breeding season whereupon they return annually to the same location, preferring still water to rivers. Unfortunately this annual mass migration from late January to March is a dangerous time for them because many become roaddeath victims in their bid to reach their desired water mass.
Garden ponds tend to come and go because different homeowners might not want to keep a water feature. However, because frogs and toads return to the same place each year to breed, they can become confused if their pond has been removed. They will still try to lay their eggs in the same area and can end up spawning in nearby puddles or water containers, which can quickly dry up. In such circumstances the spawn can be carefully put into a bucket and relocated to a safer mass of water. The eggs begin to hatch after four weeks and the water can become quite dark with many thousands of Frogs and toads become tadpoles swimming around. lawns during the summer, especially where any grass has been allowed to get quite tall along a fence or hedge, creating an ideal moist habitat for them.
Create an accessible area with dense plant cover Being nocturnal feeders they spend their days hiding in such moist areas, so one way to encourage them into your garden is to create an accessible area with dense plant cover. Strawberry beds are popular with frogs and toads because the plants produce dense foliage, creating cool moist conditions at ground level, and you also have the benefit of fresh strawberries to enjoy. Frogs and toads share the same habitat yet they are quite different creatures. Common frogs are yellowgreen in colour and have smooth damp feeling skin, whilst toads have dry ‘warty’ skin. Toads are good at camouflaging themselves by varying their skin colour to match their habitat, so can range from pink to brown to grey. Female toads reach 90mm in size so are much larger than the males, which only reach about 60mm.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames – has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service: “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. “Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.”
Cloudy2Clear service Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. “The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount

of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Money Matters with Roger Downes of Andorran
Putting a value on money I've just returned from a week’s break in the sunshine – well deserved some might say. I think so anyway! I booked through an agent, whose service was poor, although they actually made all the bookings safely so it worked in the end. But they made me answer so many questions about what I wanted to spend that it set me thinking about the value of money and more particularly how it is perceived by different people. The only week available to me was half term, so it was already nearly twice as expensive to fly and stay anywhere. I knew that by flying with a so-called low cost carrier I would be charged for everything from a tissue to blow my nose to the bags I wanted to take on the plane. But even that turned into a fascinating conversation at the airport and on the plane. Perfectly happy to pay half term prices (do they have a choice with the new rules of missing school time?), parents were refusing their children a drink because it was too expensive. Hello! You’ve just booked a family holiday, got the kids up at an ungodly hour to get the 6.15am flight and ordered 200 cigarettes from duty free. Yet when the poor child is thirsty, it’s no go.

We seem to pay out on the bigger items in our budget without spending more than what seems to be cursory time on decision making, whereas when it comes to spending a few pennies, it’s as if the bank has called in the overdraft. I think we may have our priorities all wrong. I might concede that people take their time over house buying, which is obviously the number one expense. But then again I don’t think that applies universally. But what about the car, which for most is the number two cost? How many did you test drive or have mechanically checked before you bought it? And then you have the cheek to complain when it breaks down within the first few months. And how much do you spend on looking after it once you’ve bought it? The same applies to holidays. They cost a fortune, even in weeks other than half term, but we still don’t do it properly because we think it’s too expensive to make sure that little Johnny or Josephine has the best time and therefore you get value for money. Value isn’t just for you; it’s for all those around you too. Look after the pennies I hear some of you quote. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly would be my robust response. Enjoy your time when you manage to get away this year and make sure you do the holiday justice.

Local Policing with Simon Ellson
Cheltenham Neighbourhood Policing Team
A large and challenging operation Cheltenham Race Week in March not only gives the economy of Gloucestershire – and particularly Cheltenham – a boost (an estimated £50 million), but also requires a large policing operation. During festival week it is estimated that approximately 60-70 thousand paying customers arrive daily in Cheltenham. When you add on the staff at the Racecourse, journalists, broadcasters, jockeys and grooms, covering the event is equivalent to Cheltenham holding a Six Nations Rugby International for four consecutive days! When you look at it in that context it’s quite a week. It’s certainly the biggest sporting event held in the County. Not only does the Racecourse and surrounding roads require policing, but possibly the biggest challenge is policing the town centre. Tens of thousands of people arrive in the town centre each evening – some to celebrate and some to drown their sorrows! Given the large amount of alcohol consumed it can be challenging at times. Most racegoers are good natured, but given the numbers involved you occasionally get a small number who don’t behave. Extra police officers are drafted in from around the county to assist with policing the night time economy.
A Hub to provide support and assistance to the public This year Cheltenham Neighbourhood Policing Team will be using NEV (Mobile Police Station) alongside colleagues from Ambulance Service in the High Street to create a Hub. Police officers and health care professionals will be working alongside each other to provide support and assistance to the public in the High Street. This will be staffed by police from mid-morning to the early hours. Hopefully this will ease the pressure on Accident and Emergency Services as well as calls to the police control room. Your local policing team also work closely with colleagues from Cheltenham Borough Council who deal with any licensing issues that might arise in the town. If you are out and about in town during the week you might see two police horses patrolling. These are colleagues from Avon and Somerset Constabulary who will be supporting the policing response to the Night Time Economy. British Transport police also mount a large operation at Cheltenham Train Station aimed at keeping everyone safe and sound. If you are out and about please come and say hello at the Hub. I know local officers PC Mark Love and Fran Oliffe would love to have a chat! Please enjoy the week and don’t hesitate to report anything to us.
