Dark Dark ‘n’ ‘n’ SStormy tormy This classic drink is a highball cocktail made with black rum and ginger beer, served over ice and garnished with a slice of lime. Classic, easy to make and tasty, the Dark ‘n’ Stormy is the national drink of Bermuda. Many people believe there’s only one specific type of dark rum this cocktail can be made with – Gosling’s Black Seal. They say: “If it ain’t Gosling’s, it ain’t a Dark ‘n’ Stormy.” With regards to its origin – as with the majority of rum history – the story of the cocktail comes from sailors. In the 17th century it was standard practice for the British Royal Navy to allot rum rations to sailors, and the rum was sourced from various bases on Caribbean rum-producing islands such as Bermuda. A ro u n d t h e l a te 1 8 6 0 s, t h e G o s l i n g B ro t h e r s ’ r u m distillery, located in Bermuda, began marketing a heavy blend of dark rums, which eventually became the Gosling’s Black Seal that is marketed today. The Royal Navy added a ginger beer plant to their dockyard on Ireland Island (Bermuda). Ginger is a wellknown tonic for seasickness so may have been used in an attempt to wean sailors off heavy rum-drinking. The name itself is said to have originated when a sailor held the drink up to the sky and observed the drink was “the colour of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under”. IIngredients: ngredients: Ice; 50ml Gosling’s Black Seal Rum (or other black rum); 150ml ginger beer; lime wedge (optional). EElderberries lderberries It’s my job to make sure that anything I write in this article won’t end up getting someone killed. Since there is such a huge potential for accidental poisoning when foraging, and I have a finite amount of room to talk about such risks, I include a general health warning at the bottom of each article. But in the case of the elderberry, I think a little more attention to detail is required.

The fruit of the Elder tree (Sambucus Nigra) could be poisonous if not prepared properly. When digested in their raw form, elderberries can produce a cyanide-inducing glycoside. Note the word cyanide. In sufficient quantities this could build up in the body and have as much effect on you as it might on an expendable Hollywood henchman. There is a fix, however. Cooking the berries will eliminate the aforementioned risk – I would love to explain why but I didn’t pay that much attention in chemistry at school. But I’m confident that the method works, as I made a couple of gallons of elderberry wine a few years back (thoroughly cooking the berries before fermentation) which didn’t last very long, and I’m still here to tell you about it. Haven’t got the gear for wine making? Try a cordial. Simmer a batch of elderberries for twenty minutes or more (depending on your paranoia) in just enough water to stop them burning. Give them a good mash before straining in a muslin bag and for every pint of juice you get, add 1lb of sugar. Simmer the mixture again for a further 10 minutes, then cool and store in sterilised bottles. If stored in a cool dark place the cordial should keep for up to a year, if not longer. The ‘otic canal’ (the outer ear tube) is designed to funnel noise down to and through the ear drum (tympanic membrane), which provides a physical barrier to bacteria and foreign material. Behind your ear drum is the middle ear,, an air-filled space called the tympanic cavity, and the inner ear, which contains the delicate hearing apparatus, as well as the vestibular system, which regulates your balance. Problems in any of these areas cause common ear complaints in dogs, cats, rabbits and rodents.

One of the most common complaints is the ear infection (‘otitis externa’), which dogs are particularly prone to – some breeds more than others. Hairy ear flaps that flop down over the ear canal can predispose to moist , humid conditions in the ear canal, which bacteria and fungus particularly like. Dogs that like swimming can pick up infections and dogs with skin allergies are particularly prone to the skin of the ear canal getting itchy and infected. There are many drops and solutions that can soothe and fight ear infections, although the greatest challenge is convincing Fido or Felix to sit still long enough to correctly administer the medications! Sometimes we use long lasting preparations or ear wicks (sponges impregnated with antibiotics) to avoid daily treatment of difficult patients! In young puppies, kittens and rabbits we sometimes see ear mites – tiny parasites that live in the ear canal causing an intense itching of the ears. Fortunately, they are easy to treat and much less rarely bother adult animals. Not uncommonly, foreign materials can get trapped in the ear canal. Grass seeds are particularly problematic, as their barbed ends get caught in the hair around the ear, meaning they quickly work their way down the tube until resting painfully against the ear drum. Tumours or cancers can also occur in the ear canal. Cats are particularly prone to ear polyps, which grow low down in the ear canal and are often prone to getting infected – these can be quite challenging to remove. If an ear drum ruptures or an infection damages the ear drum (tympanic membrane), an infection will spread to the tympanic cavity and cause a middle ear infection (otitis media). These can be much more difficult to cure and more aggressive treatment, such as repeated ear flushes, may be required.
A great great sselection election o off m medications edications available available These days we can use special cameras to inspect the ear drum and middle ear. Special scans or X-rays can highlight disease or growths in the lower ear canal or behind the ear drum. We have a great selection of medications and washes to control and treat infections, and clever surgical techniques allow us to treat even the most troublesome ear problem. Common symptoms include holding an ear on one side, a foul smell or discharge coming from the ear canal, or excessive scratching or head shaking. If your pet is bothered by its ears, consult your vet for the most appropriate and, hopefully, easiest treatment to administer.

No two courses, even with the same name, will have the same content, and there are lots of different descriptions for similar courses, so doing your research is essential before you even head off to a university open day.. Waste Waste n not ot a m moment oment This month’s column was inspired by Emilie Head (pictured) aged two years old. She discovered a fallen branch on the ground of our local park and felt so sad that it was b ro k e n , s h e j u s t h a d t o g e t d o w n and give it a hug. After talking to mum – a reception teacher – we agreed that pre-school children do not need ‘stuff’ as much as they need ‘life’. For little Emilie, this was simply the space and time to simply ‘be’ in the park and to explore the fallen leaves on the ground – so brown and crunchy, and smelling of dirt... brilliant!

Emilie then tried to lift it and discovered it was heavy, so she had to work really hard to try and move it at all. She discovered that the branches were covered in mosses, broken bark – which was rough to the touch – and yet more of those crunchy, autumn leaves. This was the first autumn Emilie was old enough to explore and discover.

Farewell to a charismatic ‘Cheltonian’ ANDREAS Neophitou Savvides – simply known as ‘Andy’ to his family and friends – passed away just before midnight on 14th October 2016 as he finally succumbed to long-standing heart troubles. Originally from Yaalusa (Gialousa) in Northern Cyprus, Andy was extremely proud to be a Greek Cypriot but in 1955, aged just 18, he decided to broaden his horizons and take an opportunity to live with his aunt in London and study law at university.. However, Andy couldn’t resist his vocational passion to be a barber, and started working in Bayswater at Westbourne Grove. Soon he was displaying his talent at Pinewood Studios where he spent t wo yea r s e n h a n c i n g t h e appearance of many stage and screen stars including Cliff Richard, John Robinson, Michael Holliday and Dirk Bogarde who became a personal friend. He also worked in the West End in Old Crompton Street, Soho. Answering a call from an uncle for help at his Cambray Place b a r b e r s h o p, A n d y c a m e to Cheltenham in his early 20s and brought with him the new concept of ‘blow drying’ hair from the West End. During the 60s Cheltenham’s Odeon Cinema was a venue for many live artists – indeed, The Beatles topped the bill when performing in 1963. During this period Andy was able to renew some old acquaintances including Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. But it wasn’t nightlife and business activity that determined Cheltenham would become Andy’s long-term home. Outside a coffee shop in the town’s High Street he met Heather Ann Ross – soon to be the love of his life. Originally from Dovercourt, Essex, Ann moved to the area when her father took employment at Smiths Industries. The couple married at Toddington in 1960 and enjoyed 56 great years together. They were blessed with three children – Tina, Helen and Andy ( t h e yo u n g e r ) – a n d d ote d o n t h e i r fo u r g ra n d c h i l d re n , Z a k , Harrison, Jamie & Alexis. Eager to do his own thing, Andy opened his first salon at 6 Clarence Parade in 1966 where he had ‘half shares’ of a shop with a clock maker. Three generations – Andy Savvides In 1969 he moved to 24 C l a r e n ce S t r e e t a n d with son Andy and grandson Zak. The Local Answer
ventured into ladies hairdressing, splitting the hop into two – ladies at the front and gents t the rear. However, in 1973 the popularity f the ‘gents’ side of the business dictated more space was required and the unisex airdressers reverted to a traditional barber hop. It was in 1981 that Andy bought the Bath Road premises and the business was anded over to son Andy in 1986. A number of refurbishments and developing skills have kept Andy’s & Co modern and in tune with current styles and practices – almost like starting to blow dry hair in the 60s! Having freed themselves from the shackles of business, Andy and Ann decided to move to Cyprus and settled at Frenaros on the Greek side of the Famagusta District in the south east of the island. After a few years the pair were lured back to Cheltenham – the catalyst being the arrival of their first grandchild, Jamie – and here they stayed. Andy Savvides senior was an incredibly proud man – proud of his Greek-Cypriot heritage, proud to be British and he took great pride in his work. Most of all he was proud of his beloved Ann and the family they created. He may not have been born here, but Cheltenham has lost one of its great people – a real character of the community. Andy was supportive to all around him and, when appropriate, shared the knowledge – and sometimes gossip – gleaned from his numerous regular clients as they sat in the chair. What most people will remember is Andy‘s charm and humour, his ‘cheeky’ persona and grin, and his ability to light up your day with a single smile – full of Cypriot sunshine! The final farewell to this honorary Cheltonian will take place on Monday 7th November 2016. A horse-drawn carriage will leave The Norwood just after 11.30am to take Andy down the Bath Road on his way to Cheltenham Crematorium for a 12 noon service.

As we discovered, this South Devon town makes an enjoyable, romantic weekend getaway before Christmas… Jump in the car and head down the M 5 ( n o Fr i d ay a f t e r n o o n d e l ay s a t B r i s to l ) . Past Exeterr,, ro a d improvements at Kingsteignton make getting to south Devon even easier. Take romantic, bracing walks around Berry Head, visit the acclaimed Brixham Heritage Museum or stroll hand-in-hand along Breakwater Beach – or onto the breakwater itself. There’s interesting shopping too and a plethora of well-

And when you are tired, what better than a hot chocolate, glass of wine or more delicious seafood and views over Tor Bay as you relax at family-run Breakwater Coffee Shop & Bistro. Even out of season, Brixham has enough to fill a weekend. But if you fancy exploring further afield, Dartmoor and Torquay are close. Then there’s the happy bohemian gentility of nearby Totnes – imagine Stroud with Devonian dialects. And of course, Kingswear and Dartmouth are only a short drive away over the interestingly named ‘Slappers Hill’.

Daytime ticket price includes a visit to meet Santa, a gift, craft marquee and entry to the park. Evening ticket price includes a visit to meet Santa, a gift, the Christmas Fairy, illuminations, face painting, craft marquee and entry to the park. The Bird & Deer Park has been hosting Christmas since 2008 and has been cited by the Huffington Post in 2014 for the “beautiful lights”, and in the Sunday Telegraph in 2011 for being “amongst the top 10 attractions to visit in Rural England”. The Park’s new Visitor Centre is lovely at any time, but with the wonderful views of the illuminations from the balconies it has become a must of the Cotswolds as a Christmas treat. As you walk around the Park the sounds of birds, rushing water and glistening lights are really enchanting. The famous Wendy House can also be found illuminated by the main lake. And now onto the exciting bit... Santa!

H How ow tto o rrecycle ecycle yyour our b bras ras Working in the textile recycling industry and seeing the amount of great clothing going to waste, I take a ‘never buy new ’ stance when it comes to outerwear. With underwear, I’m not quite ready for second hand. I have around eight bras, but probably only wear three of them, and am a fan of the basic t-shirt bra in a practical colour. Usually I bolster my collection after Christmas, using up a high street gift voucher on some new lingerie. What better way to start the New Year than with new knickers?
All A ll ttextiles extiles ccan an b be e rreused eused or or recycled recycled Good bras don’t come cheap! Worldwide we spend billions on bras every year, hence why I wear my bras down to the wire. Old, broken bras used to get chucked in the bin when t h ey n o l o n g e r o f fe re d t h e s u p p o r t I n e e d e d . At t h e t i m e I t h o u g h t , w hy would someone want a worn out bra? It has seen better days and surely can’t be reused or recycled… or can it? Whatever you do, please don’t do what I did and put unwanted textiles in the bin. All our textiles can be either r e u s e d o r r e c yc l e d – e v e n o u r o l d underwear. Here are a few options: Upcycle: The internet is a great place The Local Answer
to find upcycling inspiration, and with a quick search plenty pops up on what to do with old bras! Make a ‘brall’ (bra ball) for your pet to play with simply by s t i t c h i n g t h e c u p s to g e t h e r ; transform your bra into a bandeau, sw i m to p o r b u s t i e r a n d m a k e underwear into outerwear; or even get inspired by the WI and use your old bra as a plant holder and make a ‘brasket’. Recycle: Check with your local council if you are able to recycle textiles in your kerbside recycling box . If so, bras can go in there too! Make sure to place all textiles in a plastic bag so garments don’t get wet , in case it rains on recycling day. Donate: Most charity shops accept used bras that are in good enough condition to be worn again. Even if bras don’t resell on the shop floor,, a textile recycler will purchase them along with a n y o t h e r u n s e l l a b l e d o n a t i o n s f ro m the shop. This means even an old bra can help fundraise for the charity ’s beneficiaries. From the 5000 tonnes of textiles Bristol Textile Recyclers (BTR) diverts from landfill in the UK each year,, around 0.5% are bras – this equates to a staggering 320,000 bras per year that have been collected from charity shops and textile banks. BTR weighs the bras
and other textiles and pays the charity by the kilogram. At the factory, each bra’s reusability is checked by hand and they are then exported to developing nations in central Africa, along with other reusable textiles.
Minimising Minimising p potential otential cclimate limate cchange hange iimpact mpact Purchased by local traders, the second hand bras give people access to good quality, affordable underwear w h e re n e w g a r m e n t s m ay n o t b e easily accessible. Non-reusable bras are recycled into energy from waste, which h a s a l o we r g r e e n h o u s e g a s i m p a c t t h a n l a n d f i l l , m a k i n g i t t h e p re fe r re d option for managing waste to minimise potential climate change impact. We’ve come a long way since ancient Greece when it is thought women started wearing bras. Corsets came into fashion for wealthy women from the 16th century, with mass production of the modern bra starting in the 20th century. If you’re looking for a new bra, there are many brands out there that use sustainable, ethically sourced m a te r i a l s t h ro u g h o u t t h e d e s i g n a n d manufacturing process. No harsh chemicals or solvents are ever used – just a pH neutral oriental rug shampoo. With time you may find your bathroom becomes more difficult to use safely. It is possible to change your bath for a shower quite easily, as there are products available designed to fit the space taken up by a bath. Alternatively, you may decide you would like a wet room with a completely flat surface. Here are some photographs of a recent project where the customer replaced their old bath and shower with a tiled wet room, suitable for a wheelchair user with a young family.

Making Making TTax ax D Digital igital We went on a seminar last month, presented by our software suppliers. Sure, they were trying to sell us their products, but the underlying message that they carried was positively frightening. We’ve known for a while that ‘Big Brother’ is quietly taking over our daily lives, but HMRC’s initiative of Making Tax Digital is going to be a major i n t r u s i o n i n to o u r b u s i n e ss, a n d ev e n p e r s o n a l , f i n a n c i a l affairs. They are selling it under the banner of removing the need for tax returns and giving us all greater and easier access to our tax affairs. What they really mean is that they are going to access digitally all of our business records. We haven’t seen the detailed legislation yet and the devil is always in the detail. But let me share with you a few of the headline plans.
G Gone one a are re tthe he d days ays o off g good ood o oldldffashioned ashioned p pen en a and nd p paper aper Every business that is assessed to tax on its profits will have to keep its records in an electronic format that can report its transactions to HMRC . Gone are the days of spreadsheets and good old-fashioned pen and paper. Even your Sage accounting systems won’t be good enough unless you obtain the digital version. You will be obliged to report your transactions to HMRC every quarter. No longer will you be given months after your year-end to prepare your figures. Now they are going to be reported in what HMRC describes as ‘real-time’. For a lot of people, the change of timing will be most uncomfortable. Many of our clients write up their records at their own pace, with a lot of them thinking about accounts and tax just once a year, perhaps a few months before their returns are due for submission. This will require a complete change of mindset and introduce undue pressure to submit without having the chance to think or plan.

Quarterly reporting also means quarterly payment of your tax . They are saying it’s voluntary at the moment, but it’s only one step away from mandatory payment. And they will have details of your bank account so it would be easy for them to extract it direct . Great cash flow for the Treasury, but not for the businesses that are the life blood of the economy that feeds the Treasury. It doesn’t affect just businesses. Anyone with rental properties will be subject to the same rules. Frightened yet? You should be. Home Home safety safety advice advice The recent shift from British Summer Time back to Greenwich Mean Time usually brings with it a spike in the number of burglaries reported to Gloucestershire Constabulary. This is a pattern that we have seen over the last four years. We take reports of burglary very seriously in Cheltenham and have appointed a dedicated team to analyse patterns, review evidence collected and prosecute offenders. I would like to take this opportunity to provide some home safety advice to the community to deter burglars during the darker months of the year.

Throughout October police have been distributing leaflets in ‘hotspot ’ areas to advise people about basic safety measures that they can take. My team will also carry out high-visibility patrols at key times to try and deter burglars. There are some simple steps we can all take to keep our homes and most valuable possessions safe: • Firstly, keep doors and windows locked at night and any time you are away from home. • Don’t leave keys in locks and don’t store them near to doors where they could be easily reached through a letter box . • Make your house look like it is occupied using timer switches for lights and radios when you are out. • Invest in suitable lighting for the exterior of your house and lock your side gate. I would also like to encourage people to look out for the elderly and vulnerable neighbours in their area who may be less aware of home security and therefore may be more likely to be a victim of burglary.

Police in Cheltenham have recently had some encouraging results with catching burglars. One suspect was recently locked up for a string of burglaries, with almost 100 stolen items seized from his home address and returned to the rightful owners. Unfortunately, on a daily basis my officers encounter burglaries where stolen items have included treasured family photographs stored on an iPad, jewellery given to the victim by a loved one who has since passed away, and expensive bicycles that have been lovingly personalised by the victim. Please take this opportunity to review your home security. We have a small shop at Cheltenham Police Station that sells security items at low prices, a website that contains plenty of practical security advice and staff who are always willing to help, so please get in touch with us if you would like to know more.
