Delicious Dish with Helen Kingscott

Butternut squash and red lentil soup We usually cook this soup with pumpkin, but as we make the recipes in advance, it was a little too early for pumpkin season. Butternut squash is a great alternative. If the kids want to make carvings this Halloween, why not use the leftover flesh to create this hearty, warming soup?

Method: 1 Heat the tablespoon of oil in a large pan. Fry the onions until they soften and start to turn golden. Stir in the garlic, butternut squash, lentils and thyme, then pour in the stock. Season, cover and simmer for 2025 mins until the lentils and vegetables are tender. 2 Meanwhile, wash the butternut squash seeds. Remove any flesh and dry them with kitchen paper. Heat the teaspoon of oil in a non-stick pan and fry the seeds until they start to jump and pop. Stir often, but cover the pan in between to keep them from jumping out. When the seeds look nutty and toasted, add a pinch of salt and sugar, and stir well. 3 Blend the cooked butternut squash mixture in a food processor until smooth, then add the crème fraîche and blitz again. Taste for seasoning and adjust accordingly. 4 Serve with a spoonful of crème fraîche, a few thyme leaves and the toasted seeds scattered on top.

Ingredients: 1tbsp and 1tsp olive oil; 2 onions, diced; 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped; approximately 800g chopped butternut squash flesh, plus the seeds; 100g split red lentils; ½ small pack thyme, leaves picked, plus extra to serve; 1 litre hot vegetable stock; pinch of salt and sugar; 50g crème fraîche, plus extra to serve.

Fine food for every occasion!

Singapore Sling This iconic cocktail was created at Raffles Hotel at the turn-of-the-century by Hainanese-Chinese bartender, Mr Ngiam Tong Boon. In the Hotel’s museum, visitors are able to view the safe in which Mr Ngiam locked away his precious recipe books, as well as the Singapore Sling recipe, which was hastily jotted down on a bar-chit in 1936 by a visitor to the Hotel who asked the waiter for it. Originally, the Singapore Sling was meant as a woman’s drink – hence the attractive pink colour. Today it is very definitely a drink enjoyed by all, without which any visit to Raffles Hotel is incomplete. Ingredients: Ice; 30ml gin; 15ml cherry brandy; 120ml pineapple juice; 15ml lime juice; 7.5ml cointreau; 7.5ml Dom Benedictine; 10ml grenadine; a dash of Angostura Bitters; slice of lime or pineapple and a maraschino cherry. Method: 1 Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. 2 Strain into an ice filled collins glass. 3 Garnish with a slice of lime or pineapple and a maraschino cherry.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY Why not have a Mocktail? For a non-alcoholic alternative, mix 120ml cherry soda, 60ml ginger ale, splash of freshly squeezed lemon juice, ice cubes and 1tsp grenadine. Garnish with a wedge of lemon and a maraschino cherry. Page 6

Pet Care

with Oliver Wilkinson of Charlton Kings Vet Centre

Depressed dogs and miserable moggies Can pets get depression? The simple answer is ‘maybe’, but not like humans. Depression in humans is a complex mix of emotions including hopelessness, anguish, worthlessness, shame and even feelings of suicide – these are largely beyond what canines and felines appear capable of. It would, however, be a disservice to our four-legged friends to completely absolve them of any complex emotions. Any owner will recognize the joy as Fido rushes to greet them when they return home, or the unbridled pleasure of a purring Felix being fussed whilst sitting on one’s lap. They will also see signs of fear or anxiety towards negative stimuli – loud noises, raised voices or random inanimate objects! Often owners claim their pets are capable of remorse or guilt having been caught in a scene of destruction or caught short inside and many cat owners receive the ‘evil eye’ of disgust when they let down their feline house guests.

Defining depression in dogs and cats However, we risk humanising animal behaviour when the explanation may be more simple. A dog’s ability to feel guilt or shame has largely been discredited in scientific studies. When it looks guilty, it is likely to be simply reacting to the owner’s anger or unhappiness. We must also be careful when defining depression in dogs and cats. Significant events can upset pets, such as a house move, loss of a family member or another pet, or someone being upset or unwell. They may show signs of depression, such as reduced interaction, sleeping more, being more withdrawn, and reluctance to go for walks or play. In many cases there will be an obvious trigger and after a while, they will return to normal levels of interaction and activity.

There may be underlying health issues Crucially, we must not miss underlying health issues that might be contributing to these apparent symptoms. Is Fido reluctant to go for walks or get off his bed because he is becoming arthritic? Cats are particularly good at hiding illnesses by becoming withdrawn and sleeping more. Diabetes or an under-active thyroid are common hormonal problems that may present with similar symptoms of lethargy and fatigue. Has your dog stopped playing with his toys because he has dental disease and it is too painful to chew on them? Is he reluctant to go for walks because his vision is failing? Genuine depressive disorders are rare in pets. It is more likely if a pet is exhibiting long-standing symptoms of depression, that other health problems may be contributing to the behaviour. If you believe your pet is depressed, talk to your vet about what tests or treatment is appropriate. Mild cases may simply require patience, increased fussing and interacting, stimulus in the form of walks, and the maintenance of consistent, active daily routines. Page 8

Wildlife Matters

with Jenny Stevens of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust

River-loving creatures with good manners and a tidy home © Mike Taylor

Like a number of other native species, many of us may first have been introduced to the water vole through literature. The popular children’s story ‘Wind in the Willows’ featured Ratty – a river-loving fellow with good manners, a tidy home and a fondness for his friends. Despite his name, Ratty was in fact a water vole.

Meticulous and tidy As the character’s name would suggest, the water vole is similar in appearance to the brown rat. But they’re smaller (14-22cm in length), their noses are rounder, their ears are smaller (usually hidden behind their chestnut brown fur) and their furry tails are shorter. Much like Ratty, they are meticulous and tidy – their burrows in steep river banks are usually neat holes, around 4-8cm in diameter, with carefully gnawed ‘lawns’ in the surrounding area. Their water repellent fur and plump figure make them buoyant and allow them to glide easily along rivers and streams. Their herbivorous diet includes grasses, reeds and rushes, which they’ll often chew away at and leave small neat piles of nibbled stalks along banks. When Kenneth Graham wrote the book in 1908, water voles were enjoying a prosperous time with over eight million inhabiting our waterways. With plenty of watercourses rich in vegetation and banks perfect for burrows, they were widespread throughout the UK.

Intensive farming methods are destroying habitats Sadly, their time of prosperity was not to last. Due to the increase in intensive farming methods, their precious habitat began to disappear.

The Local Answer

This was accompanied by the introduction of the American mink in the 1920s. Originally brought to the UK to satisfy the growing fur trade, mink were frequently released into the wild and preyed upon the water vole. Surveys carried out in the late 1990s by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust indicated that county populations had declined by 83% over a 25 year period, leaving just a few fragmented populations – a statistic that reflected the decline across the UK. In response, a number of conservation projects were set up to help this beloved creature. In Gloucestershire the Cotswold Rivers Project aims to stop the decline and recreate appropriate habitats so that the water vole can thrive once more. Advice and information is given to landowners, while habitats are managed to allow wildlife to travel between sites more easily. As a result, water vole numbers have increased in the county, with isolated populations spreading to new areas. Greystones Farm Nature Reserve in Bourton-on-the-Water

remains a stronghold for the precious species. So there is hope for the water vole yet – as long as careful conservation work continues.

Look out for water voles near watercourses It is always worth looking out for water voles when near watercourses. We’d be grateful for sightings. Look for the burrows along steep sided banks, the mounds of chewed vegetation and grazed ‘lawns’. Their droppings look like dark green/brown Tic Tacs, oval in shape, 8-12mm in length and odourless. Of course, the most obvious sign that there is a population nearby is spotting the furry creatures on banks and in water. However, like Ratty, they are only really fond of their friends and quite shy with strangers so spotting them can be tricky. If you think there might be one nearby, stay quiet and listen out carefully for a gentle ‘plop’. Ratty may just have dropped into the water, heading downstream to see Mole, Toad and Badger.

Style & Fashion with Carolyn Nicholls

Drifting into autumn As October arrives, the season starts to change and autumn is upon us. The mornings have that damp feel and there is a chill in the air. It can be a difficult month where clothes are concerned because the days often have that cool start, but by lunchtime there is brilliant sunshine and we are sweltering in what now seems an ill-chosen outfit. The children are now settled into their new school, and mums and dads are getting to know some of the other parents at the school gate. I remember well how important it was for me to try to look my best first thing in the morning – and how difficult!

Dressing casual is not as effortless as it sounds Now I know that moments before you leave the house you are going to be scooting around the floor on hands and knees, helping to clean teeth and all manner of tasks that mean you cannot be wearing anything too precious. I also know that even dressing casual is not as effortless as it sounds. So let’s put some effort into achieving effortless! The first thing to consider is actually that being casual is also being stylish. Don’t simply use the clothes that have past their best as casual wear – they are still past their best and not necessarily appropriate for the school gate. Why not treat yourself to a few pieces that are just for casual wear. As you may spend most of your time wearing casual clothes, it’s worth the effort.

fab wellies or winter boots later in the year. You will need a couple of coats too: the practical wind and rainy one, long enough to cover your bottom and in a flattering colour; and then the woolly one for cold days, which is worth splashing out on for good quality. Just add some lovely scarves (silk, jersey or wool as appropriate) to accessorise and you will look amazing! If you’re not confident about the styles and colours that work for you, why not invest in a personal style coach to help you get started.

Good news if you are dental phobic or just hate visiting the dentist! Arnica Dental Care, Cheltenham’s Dental Sedation Centre specialising in treating phobic, anxious patients, has expanded to meet demand for gentle dentistry and dental sedation. With two brand new surgeries overlooking a beautiful well-tended garden, two relaxation and recovery rooms, a bright comfortable waiting room and the option of seating in the garden when it’s warm, Arnica is all about putting the patients’ individual needs first.

A qualified and experienced team The expansion includes the arrival of Dr Guy Bailey, a fully qualified doctor and dental surgeon who joins Drs Leah Adams, Ellie Ledger and Gill Kemp to complete what they believe is arguably the most qualified, experienced dental sedation team in the region. Treating phobic patients requires skill, experience, patience, technique and a truly relaxing, comfortable environment. Leah, who joined Arnica in 2007, until recently lectured at Cardiff Dental School, teaching sedation to undergraduate dental students. Established in 2001, Arnica Dental Care is a family owned private practice that has built up an enviable reputation for high quality treatment and care, including general/family dental care, cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry such as dental implants, and the revolutionary All-on-4 and Zygomatic dental implant techniques.

Over 80 regional dentists refer patients to Arnica for treatment Arnica’s owner and principal dentist Dr Ellie Ledger is very proud of the fact that over 80 regional dentists refer patients to Arnica for treatment requiring sedation and for more complex procedures such as dental implants. ‘’Our reputation for quality care and value for money – including only recommending treatment when it’s absolutely necessary – means that most new patients join us as a result of word of mouth.’’ Although a number of open days are planned, why not drop in and have a chat with a member of staff, or call us on 01242 655554 and we’ll send you our info pack.

Looking Good, Feeling Great with Matt Wagstaff

Foam rolling and selfMyofascial release What is foam rolling?

What are the benefits?

Foam rolling is a form of selfMyofascial release (SMR) or self massage, commonly used in athletes and with those who have soft tissue injuries. However, recently foam rolling has been more widely used within gyms and sports facilities due to its many benefits when performed properly. SMR is routinely used with a long cylindrical shaped foam roll, though newer products have used harder materials, usually with nodules, in order to replicate a therapist’s hands, making it more efficient at getting deeper into tight areas. Other objects can be used to perform SMR, including different sized balls, such as tennis or golf balls. With their smaller surface area they can really help seek out tight and dysfunctional spots within the muscle and surrounding fascia.

There are many benefits of SMR for the injured and healthy alike. SMR attempts to break down knots or adhesion trigger points, which come about when small tears occur in muscle fibres due to poor position or repetitive actions. Our bodies lay down scar tissue in order to avoid the muscle becoming anymore torn. This scar tissue is the knot we feel, as it is not laid down in as linear fashion, disrupting the muscle’s ability to work to its full effect. SMR also increases the length of muscle tissues and surrounding fascia due to an increased blood flow and the release of adhesions within the tissues. This also aids in recovery due to the ability to push out substances such as lactic acid that can linger in muscles following exercise.

How should SMR be done? SMR should be done slowly and with care – people often perform SMR too quickly, which isn’t as effective. A rough time of 1-2 minutes could be spent on each area. Begin by slowly rolling the whole area, finding any tight or uncomfortable points which could be trigger points. Focus on these areas, slowly rolling over them or holding the compression on that area for 20-30 seconds whilst breathing deeply and attempting to relax the area (easier said than done). It is wise to contact a sport or physiotherapist before starting SMR in order to assess where you should be focussing on and appropriate techniques and equipment. You shouldn’t roll directly onto bones or joints.

When should you do it? SMR can be performed at anytime, however it is especially effective when done before physical activity, as it can improve circulation to the muscles and increase range of motion without acutely affecting the muscle’s power and ability to fully contract. SMR can be performed daily, along with stretching. Initially muscle soreness in the days/hours following SMR can be felt – this is a normal reaction and will go soon after.

BRINGING ‘YOU’ BACK

Mirror Mirror on the Wall... with Katie Pollard

Growing old gracefully neck! Like our hands, necks give away a person’s true age, so be sure to apply generously down onto the neck, smoothing away any fine lines.

Ageing gracefully is the ultimate goal of hopeful, optimistic people everywhere, isn’t it? Today, turning back the clock is the quest for most women and men who simply refuse to age gracefully. With all that’s available aesthetically – the various forms of surgery with Botox being the frontrunner in time trickery – visible signs of aging can be erased altogether. But what is it they say about beauty being on the inside? Well, when it comes to how we feel and look on the outside it’s often psychological. If we feel good on the inside, this is reflected on the outside.

A cocktail of organic essential oils and natural extracts

The key to a beautiful complexion is daily care and smart prevention Our body’s largest organ – our skin – shows signs of aging more than any other body part. We’re constantly told that the key to a beautiful complexion is daily care and smart prevention. I know wrinkle-free is never an option, but who doesn’t want to look healthy and youthful as the decades go by? Apparently skin-repair replacement mechanisms begin to slow by age 20 (yes, really!) and I bet if more people knew this, they’d be doing things differently when it comes to their skincare. What we do right now will determine how our skin looks later on in life. Now is the time for us to build up the proper discipline and habits that will help us age gracefully! Don’t treat your skin like it’s the enemy. Even if you suffer with acne,

blemishes or redness, trying to tackle the problem with harsh cleansers will only strip the skin, not treat it. Washing your face twice daily and for women, removing make up before going to bed, are essentials before starting your routine. We must stimulate our skin in order for it to repair itself. Therefore, dermatologists advise we exfoliate three times a week and the best time to do this is at night, so the skin has time to recover. The ideal exfoliator will be something relatively gentle with not too much grit – you don’t want to rub your face raw. A recommended product for this is Dermalogica’s Skin Prep Scrub.

Don’t neglect your neck

One moisturising cream that is perfect for applying to skin before you catch those all important zzz’s is the Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Night Cream, but there are similar creams for different skin types available in many health and beauty stores. This rich and nourishing cream is a cocktail of organic essential oils and natural extracts that hydrate the skin. As we are all aware by now, and as I’ve previously written, coconut oil balances the skin’s natural moisture levels, helping it to stay healthy, and improves the firmness and tone of the skin. This is why this particular cream is ideal for deep overnight hydration. If you want to grow old gracefully, avoiding the surgeon’s chair and the dreaded Botox needle, invest in products like these so the only question you’ll be asked about your appearance is “How old did you say you are?”

Once exfoliated, you need a moisturiser to lock in moisture. Personally, I use Olay Essentials Beauty Fluid and have done for as long as I can remember. Your skin is left feeling amazingly soft and it is absorbed really quickly into the skin, unlike others on the market, which leave you feeling greasy and shiny. It’s the ideal base for make up with it’s light and silky feel. Beauty tip – mix a little of the moisturiser with your liquid foundation base, as this will help you to create the coverage you want. Don’t neglect your

Vision Board Workshop

Living Well The Isbourne Wellbeing Fringe is a new two-day event alongside the Cheltenham Literature Festival celebrating our holistic authors – some local and some visiting the town. Over 7th and 8th October, invited authors will be giving workshops, including one entitled ‘Great Britain? The Secret and Destiny of the British and their Isles’. Richard Abbot correctly predicted the outcome of the EU referendum by using numerological keys. Hear him use further insights to examine the monarchy, London, the ‘numbers’ of places all over Britain and what is needed for the four nations of the Union to stay together! Deep Awake – when we only pay attention to the surface of life, we’re only superficially awake. But when we look deeper we can become ‘deep awake’. Spiritual pioneer Tim Freke has touched thousands of lives with his books, events and retreats. According to Tim, you don’t need to be spiritual to get there – this incredible feeling is natural and available to all of us! Do you find it difficult to switch off, get sleep, focus when you need to, relax, or let go? Judy Hall, three times on the Watkins Spiritual 100 List of most spiritually influential living people of the 21st century, is also one of the world’s leading crystal experts. Her ‘Crystal Bible’ book sales have topped 1 million and her Crystal Mindfulness workshop will offer ways to find tranquility and enjoy a more creative and joyful life. Heard about Laughter Yoga? Don’t worry, there are no difficult yoga positions to attain! It involves laughing as a physical exercise, and expert Joe Hoare has been developing and fine-tuning his own style of it over the years. In this fantastic animated session you will move your body, free your voice and laugh your soul! Local author Penelope Quest is internationally known for her award-winning books about Reiki. In her event called ‘Reiki for Stress Relief’ she’ll explain how stress puts you at risk of ill-health. Find out how to promote relaxation and harmony in your life! These are just a selection of the events – there will also be the brilliant Samba band for you to drum with, delicious food in the café and the whole Centre to explore! Tickets are available through the Isbourne – see the special one-day and two-day tickets!

Sugar and spice – all things nice? Our physical bodies require a good nutritional input in order to work productively. If we eat too much sugary or fatty food, our bodies will become lethargic and unhealthy – both on the inside and out. So many foods these days contain added salt or sugar – including white bread, cereals and ready meals. An excess of sugar can cause blood glucose levels to fluctuate dramatically, and this constant rise and fall can lead to low energy overall and also low mood, restlessness and poor concentration. Refined sugars and fatty foods also have a negative effect on our hair and skin, making it oily and more prone to spots, and sugars also increase the risk of developing tooth decay.

This is a life-long disease, which over time damages blood vessels and organs, leading to other complications. Too much salt in your diet can lead to high blood pressure, which can cause heart disease or stroke. High amounts of salt can be found in foods such as processed meats and full-fat dairy products. Similarly, fatty foods can cause Too many treats increases high cholesterol levels, which can the risk of type 2 diabetes cause blockages in the blood vessels A more serious concern is that and put strain on the heart. calories. If you intake more calories than you burn off, (through exercise, for example), this leads to the body storing excess energy as fat, which leads to an increase in weight. Eating too much cheap, processed food and not being active enough can cause obesity, which in turn can lead to diabetes. But forget ‘fad diets’, the best way to lose weight and stay healthy is to eat a balanced diet and keep active. Remember to eat good amounts of each food type: protein (lean meat, fish, eggs, nuts), starchy foods (potato, pasta, rice), dairy or alternatives (skimmed milk, low-fat yoghurt), and most importantly, fruit and vegetables. Cakes and biscuits might taste nice, but sugar is addictive, making us want to eat more of these unhealthy snacks. Instead, try naturally sweettasting foods like pears, berries and nectarines, or adding honey or peanut better to plain foods. Or for savoury meals, spice up your food with different flavours, such as cinnamon, turmeric or oregano. Also, try to get out of the habit of adding extra salt or sugar to your meals.

Everything in moderation Of course, it’s ok to have the occasional sweet treat, but everything in moderation. Plus, the best way of not eating naughty foods at home is to not have them in the house in the first place!

Parenting & Guardianship with Roberta Smart

The art of letting go For many of you, autumn marks a radical change as your 18 year olds set off to university for the first time, or older students begin looking for work. As much as this can fill us with worry, it is vital we remember the excitement of starting something new, and prepare to offer our older kids all the support they need, as well as allowing them the freedom to fly the nest without too much guilt.

Familiarise yourself with their new world So how best can we navigate this tricky time? Begin with familiarising yourself with the new world they are entering – get familiar with the geography of the place and ensure they are armed with railcards, bus passes or driving licences as appropriate.

Shopping for student life essentials is a rite of passage and will get everyone on the same page for the changes ahead. From kettles to toasters, new duvets and linen, to laptops and printers, the modern students wish-list does not come cheap. Encouraging them to get a summer job to buy some of their own supplies is a great way to bridge the gap. Most students will look for part-time work once they are at university, as well as enjoying a frantic social life, especially in the first year, so remember to be encouraging of their explorations when you talk on the phone or text. Keeping in touch is so valuable – please don’t feel like you are ‘interfering’! All kids, no matter how old, thrive on feeling loved and valued, and your regular calls and the occasional ‘care package’ of their

favourite snacks, beauty products or other meaningful supplies will keep the bonds strong and ensure you don’t feel too left out.

Don’t immediately repurpose their room One word of advice – don’t immediately repurpose your son or daughter’s room the minute they leave – they will be back, and technically they still live at home. The same goes for older kids moving into shared houses or with boy/girlfriends. Please don’t rush to move into their space – that can be very hurtful and send the message that they are no longer welcome at home, which in turn puts a lot of pressure on their new arrangements to work out.

Keep an ‘open door policy’ The most wonderful thing you can ever do for your adult children as they move on in life is retain an ‘open door policy’ and ensure they know that home is always available to them – until the time comes for them to completely cut the apron strings. Even if you are short of room or have a change in circumstances, the message – there’s always a bed here for you (even if it’s just the sofa) – can mean the world to a young adult who is navigating jobs, relationships and the art of being a grown up. After all, the one thing that never changes is the love you share. So keep those arms open and your heart high, and take a moment to feel proud of all you’ve accomplished. Mum, dad – you did great!

This month sees the start of the Parish Plan process, which will lead to the creation of a Parish Plan for Charlton Kings, helping shape a vision for our community and its development for the next 5-10 years. We are asking for input from everyone who lives, works and plays in Charlton Kings on a wide range of issues, and would particularly like to know what is important to you about our community and how you think it can be improved. This will help us reflect your priorities and aspirations in our decision making going forward. For readers who live in Charlton Kings or Battledown, included with this edition is a simple questionnaire on topics relating to the Charlton Kings community. We would like you to fill this in and return it to us via ballot boxes, which will be situated around the village. The questionnaire and a more comprehensive set of questions will also be available online via our website www.charltonkingsparishcouncil.gov.uk and hard copies will be available at locations around the village with ballot boxes from 1st October to 1st November: • Badham Pharmacy, London Road, Charlton Kings • Smith & Mann, Lyfield Road West, Charlton Kings • Charlton Kings Library, Church Piece, Charlton Kings Additional ballot boxes will also be placed in the Charlton Kings Club and at other sites around the village. We are keen to obtain views from as many of you as possible, and would encourage you to complete the questionnaire(s) online as this simplifies the administration. Please do not photocopy the questionnaires. We will be holding an Open Parish Meeting at 7pm on Monday 10th October at the Stanton Room at which you are all welcome. Here we will explain more about the process and give you the opportunity to join the debate and get involved. Our proposed timetable for completing the project is: • November 2016: analyse responses • December 2016 – January 2017: preparation of Parish Plan • 16th January 2017: Open Parish Meeting – feedback on emerging themes • 27th March 2017: completed Parish Plan approved at Parish Meeting Your opinions and support for this project are very important to us. This is a real opportunity for you to get involved in your local community and we look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at our open meeting on 10th October.

Dates of October public meetings Mondays in the Stanton Hall Planning: 3rd and 17th at 6.30pm Allotments: 10th at 6pm Parish Meeting: 24th at 7pm Full Council: 31st at 7pm Clerk – Liz Dowie (01242 250087) Clerk@charltonkingsparishcouncil.gov.uk www.charltonkingsparishcouncil.gov.uk

Share a wonderful experience! On your own, with your partner, with friends or your whole family – a theatre trip to the capital is a fabulous, affordable treat and, maybe, a Christmas experience to remember!

Choose from four excellent value breaks each offering a selection of the hottest shows in town!

If you don’t wish to drive, there are a couple of 2-day Coach Holidays available from October to May/June with local pick-up points, return hotel-to-show transfers, a transfer to Central London for sight-seeing and shopping and the services of a hotel-based representative. The ‘Four Star Best of the West End’ includes a night in a four-star hotel from only £99 per person, while the ‘Dine and Dance’ includes Saturday night dinner and disco at your hotel from only £153pp. Both prices include a Standard ticket to ‘Wicked’ or ‘Woman in Black’ which can be upgraded to seats for the show of your choice. Our ‘Make-Your-Own-Way breaks are for 2 or 3 days (1 or 2 nights) from £119pp and £189pp respectively from October to December. They include four-star accommodation (with breakfast) and a top-price ticket for your chosen show. For those of you looking for ‘me time’ and personal escapism, single rooms are available for a supplement. Full details and booking information for all theatre breaks, including specific promotions for ‘Beautiful – The Carole King Musical’, ‘Charlie & the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘The Go-Between’, are available at www.newmarket.travel/laa or by calling 0330 160 7938 (Quote LAA).

Taiwan: more than just bikes and electronics Think Taiwan and you may imagine bicycles and electronic components. Actually, as a few lucky western travellers discover, this little island off China also offers fantastic value, sights, weather (outside typhoon season!) and a warm welcome. Taipei, the capital, is readily accessible from Birmingham, via Dubai. On arrival, catch the bus to Taipei’s main station, then it’s a short walk to the comfy, convenient City Inn Hotel 1 on Huaining street.

markets (e.g. Shilin), intricately decorated temples, riverside walks (don’t miss Tamsui) or go up Taipai 101’s 588 metre-high ‘bamboo-stalk’ for stunning views. Hungry? Enjoy cheap, delicious food in modern food courts or myriad local noodle shops. Not sure what to order? Ni hao (‘hello’) and XièXie (‘thank you’) are your friends, as helpful locals order for you and wish you a happy meal. Taipei can entertain for weeks, but for a less frenetic Taiwan, catch a train to east coast Hualein and collect a car from Avis. Enjoy a night in the nearby Charming City hotel, then drive north to Taroko National Park. You can’t miss the intriguingly named Crossing the Rainbow Bridge B&B at the Taroko Gorge’s entrance, where aboriginal Teyra and his family will look after you while you explore the area’s wonders.

services, must-see Xuanguang and Xuanzang temples, and the Ci En Pagoda built by late President Chiang Kai-sheck in memory of his mother. It’s worth climbing to the top for stunning views – and exercise after another culinary indulgence! When it’s time to leave, it’s a straightforward motorway drive to Wuli bullet train station at Taichung to return your car and catch the train back to Taipei.

The island constantly reveals new delights Like a bijou gemstone, this island constantly reveals new delights. Taiwan may be small, but from busy Taipei to laid-back Kenting County at its southern tip, it will reward anyone seeking a change from the usual Far East itineraries.

Next, head west to Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan. It’s a concentrationdemanding day’s drive but always rewarding as you cross the 3275m Wuling Pass (Taiwan’s highest) and descend through cloud to Nantou’s lakeside Crystal Resort hotel, just minutes from Ita Thao Pier. The lake is a joy, with regular boat

Lois and Tiffany present the cheque to Jackie with a little help from Newt!

Congratulations! A great big high five to all of you who entered our ‘TLA Charity’ competition back in August. We had a fantastic response, which shows how much the Gloucestershire community supports its great local causes. The lucky winner of the £1,000 prize was New Start Cat Rescue, nominated by one of their supporters, Tiffany Caucutt. Both Tiffany and Jackie, who runs the charity, were over the moon and couldn’t thank us and Albany Windows enough. New Start Cat Rescue helps unwanted cats and kittens of any age to get a new start in life – whether that’s neutering and returning ferral cats to their normal colonies, or finding loving family homes for abandoned kittens. They encourage responsible cat ownership, offer advice to owners, promote regular vaccination and worming programs, and encourage neutering and microchipping when the cats are old enough. This money will go towards helping rescue and rehome the 60 cats and kittens the charity helps every single month. So from Jackie, Tiffany, the volunteers and, of course, the gorgeous cats and kittens – thank you! To find out more about New Start Cat Rescue and how you can support them, please call Jackie on 07510 134805 or visit www.newstartcatrescue.org.uk. Photos from top left to top right: Marie giving a big high five, Tom guarding the cheque, Lois cuddling Topsey and Turvey, curious Marie, Tiffany with Topsey and Turvey, Helen and Eddie, Oreo, Tom looking pretty in pink, Amy can’t wait to tuck into the Champagne!

In The Garden with Julia Smith

A good time for fruit trees This month sow some of the sweetpeas I suggested you bought last month in pots made of the inside of toilet rolls, lined with a bit of newspaper to stop the compost falling out the bottom. Soak seeds overnight and plant two per roll, using seed compost that you can buy at garden centres. Water in and leave to germinate inside at 18-22°C. Once germinated, pinch out the smaller plants and move them outside to a sunny cold frame. They will be ready to plant into their position in the spring.

Enough fruit to fill the freezer all year round Fruit trees are really becoming popular, as they take little looking after (unlike vegetables) and can provide enough fruit to fill the freezer to use all year round. October is a good time to prepare the ground for new fruit trees and bushes. If

planting on heavy soil, add plenty of grit to ensure drainage is adequate. Work in plenty of well-rotted manure into each planting position and add a handful of slow release fertiliser when you plant the new trees.

Get on with tidying up October is also a good time to get on with the tidying up process in the borders. The soil will still be warm and moist, ideal for planting. Continue lifting and dividing clumps of perennials that have grown too big. Swap amongst your friends to increase your diversity of plants – everyone loves something for nothing! One word of warning – it may be prudent to take all the soil from the roots of a plant from a friend’s garden, and washing them off will ensure you get rid of any perennial weeds like bindweed, so do be careful.

harm even in a very hard winter and will romp away in the spring. Why not plant some Cyclamen hederifolium, which should be in flower now. Plant somewhere with shelter from the sun and wind, digging in some leaf-mould if you have some – under the shelter of trees is ideal. By planting now, when they are living plants you can see what you are buying and they will establish quickly. The dainty wired stems with lovely pink flowers really brighten up a shady spot, and the leaves form a silver and green carpet later on.

Dainty wired stems with lovely pink flowers Sow ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ broad beans now for an early crop next year. Plant seeds 20cm apart and 5cm deep. This variety comes to no

‘Autumn Clean’ is the new ‘Spring Clean’ Spring is traditionally the time we associate with giving our homes a deep clean, but health experts suggest we should really be tackling a deep and thorough clean of our homes twice a year. Autumn is the perfect time for cleaning. The school holidays are over, temperatures begin to drop (not too fast we hope), the nights begin to draw in and we think about closing our doors, switching on the central heating and settling in for the winter. Unfortunately, reduced ventilation and an increasingly moist environment creates the perfect conditions for bacteria and dust mites.

Have a big clean before closing up windows and doors for winter Imogen Fawcett, owner of MOLLY MAID Cheltenham says: “It’s so important from a health perspective to carry out a deep clean of your home more than once a year. Lots of dust and dirt is bought into our homes during the spring and summer months, so it’s a good idea

to have a big clean before closing our windows and doors for the winter.”

Fully insured and trained staff to give peace of mind Of course, we haven’t all got the time to dedicate to deep cleaning our homes, so MOLLY MAID Cheltenham would be delighted to help. All their staff are directly employed, fully insured, fully trained, reference checked and bring all tools and supplies with them. Speaking about the importance of reference checked and insured staff, Imogen said: “Having fully trained and insured Maids gives our customers peace of mind when we’re in their homes. They can be completely reassured that their home and treasured possessions are in safe hands!” To discuss your individual requirements for a professional cleaning service, or to arrange a free inhome estimate, please contact Imogen today on 01242 234115 or email imogen-fawcett@mollymaid.co.uk.

Interior Design with Caron Burrows

Choose your interiors style Most of us gravitate to our own likes and dislikes when it comes to choosing a style for the place we call home. Interiors are portrayed in various styles – contemporary, coastal, country, eclectic, industrial, Scandinavian and shabby chic, to mention just a few. Join me over the following months to assist you choosing or identifying a design style for your home. This month we are talking about Contemporary Design.

towards minimalism by keeping clutter to a minimum. Kitchen surfaces should be mostly clear and shelves not muddled with knick knacks and books. Clean line storage is the key and the first step to completing a contemporary style.

What is it?

Colour choices should be exciting and used in an original, eye-catching way. Black and white is a classic colour scheme that never grows old and works well in a bold contemporary home. Don’t be afraid to try these colour choices in a child’s room. Pastels and sugary shades will easily lift your scheme, whilst adding a modern edge to your home. Do not be tempted to use too many colours – limit your choice to just two or three.

Contemporary style is about now – a contemporary home expresses this through its finish and fabric, as well as its furniture, latest building techniques and architectural ideas. The contemporary look provides the excitement of new and modern – perhaps being the first to have the latest sofa or latest gadget. The client decided she would like a wet room with level access, and white tiling on the walls to give a brighter more spacious feel.

Local Policing with Simon Ellson

Cheltenham Neighbourhood Policing Team

Preventing violence With the recent retirement of Inspector Waterhouse, I’m currently in the hot seat on a temporary basis as the Police Inspector for Cheltenham. You might have seen the coverage in the local press regarding several drug busts we made recently. We have been made aware over several months of drug activity in certain parts of the town. Drug dealing is often a driving factor in violent crime and weapon related offences, with many recent murders and knife crime incidents in our county having a drugs element. Taking these people off your streets helps to prevent the violence that inevitably follows. The work for us does not stop here and will be ongoing for many more months as we take the case through court and work with partner agencies to prevent other drug dealers from moving into our town.

The community is an excellent source of information for investigations Throughout the summer months, police officers have been investigating drug dealing and identifying individuals involved in drug supply. This has resulted in a series of warrants being carried out throughout September in order to arrest individuals and search for evidence. At the time of writing, more than a dozen people from Cheltenham, Gloucester and London have been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences, controlled drugs have been seized and a sawn-off shotgun was taken off the streets of Cheltenham. Police in Cheltenham rely on members of the public to be our ‘eyes and ears’ and the community has been an excellent source of information for this investigation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their assistance so far and to encourage people to tell us any information they have about drug dealing in their neighbourhood. This information can be reported to the police on 101, or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Do you know where your children are after dark? Where’s the summer gone? With a change of season brings slightly different issues and demands to deal with. Kids are back at school, the clocks will be changing soon – before we know it will be Halloween and bonfire night. Do you know where your children are if they are out and about after dark? We receive an increase in calls regarding ASB and troublesome teenagers this time of year. I’m sure you wouldn’t want a knock on the door from us if your child has been up to no good!
