Sex on the Beach If you’re thinking of planning a last-minute holiday for September, this popular drink is sure to get you in the mood – and it would be rude not to have a few cheeky cocktails while you plan! The most well-known claim to the invention of Sex on the Beach dates back to the autumn of 1987 in Florida, USA. A new drink – peach schnapps – had just started to be distributed and, with thousands of tourists expected to visit for the spring holiday, the distributor created a contest to popularise the new beverage. The bar that sold the most peach schnapps would receive a bonus of $1000 and the bartender responsible for the highest sales would receive $100. Ted, a young bartender at Confetti’s Bar, mixed peach schnapps with vodka, orange juice and grenadine, and was soon asked what the cocktail was called. He immediately thought of the main reason why people came to Florida for their spring break – the beach and sex! “Sex on the Beach!” he replied. As the drink became more and more popular, thousands of students returned home and requested the cocktail at their local bar. The bartenders didn’t know how to make the drink, as they had never heard of it, so they asked around and this led to the multiple variations of the drink. Ingredients: Ice; 50ml vodka; 25ml peach schnapps; 50ml orange juice; 25ml grenadine. Method: 1 Add ice, vodka and peach schnapps to a highball glass. 2 Top up with orange juice and drizzle grenadine to create a ‘sunset’ appearance.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY Why not have a Mocktail? For a non-alcoholic alternative, mix 50ml cranberry juice, 50ml grapefruit juice and 25ml peach nectar. Garnish with an orange slice. Page 4

Blackberry Bonanza! September is a great time to go blackberry picking with the family. Take advantage of and explore our wonderful countryside whilst collecting some fresh ingredients to make these delicious recipes!
Blackberry Coulis Ingredients: 250g blackberries; 50g golden caster sugar; 100ml water; ½ teaspoon vanilla extract. Method: 1 Put the blackberries, sugar and water into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes until the
fruit is soft. Stir in the vanilla, remove from the heat and cool a little. 2 Tip the mixture into a blender and puree, then strain through a sieve, rubbing it through with a spoon. 3 Serve warm or chilled. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
Blackberry and clotted cream shortcake Ingredients: For the cake: 300g self raising flour; 1tsp baking powder; pinch of salt; 140g butter, chilled and cut into small pieces; 100g golden caster sugar; 75ml buttermilk; 1 egg, beaten. For the filling: 500g blackberries; 3tbsp golden caster sugar; 275g pot clotted cream; icing sugar, to serve.
Method: 1 Heat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan/gas mark 5). 2 Tip the flour, baking powder and salt into a mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub everything together with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar. 3 Make a well in the middle of the flour mixture, then tip in the buttermilk and egg. Gently work the mixture together until it forms a soft, sticky dough. 4 On a lightly floured surface, knead the mixture for a few minutes, then mould it into an 18cm round and put on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden and risen and a skewer comes out clean when inserted into the middle. Leave to cool. 5 Lightly mash the blackberries with the sugar. Slice the shortcake in half and spread the bottom layer with clotted cream. Spoon the berries over the cream, then top with the second shortcake layer. Dust with icing sugar and serve in slices.
Fine food for every occasion!

Hazelnuts Bertram the Badger is an annual visitor to my back garden, and for good reason. Reaching over my back fence are the branches of the Hazel tree and it’s about this time of year that it starts to shed its fruit. This makes spending autumn afternoons in the garden a risky affair, as they have been known to leave small bruises if dislodged by a particularly strong gust of wind. Bertram, however, can’t get enough of this nutritional nutty nourishment. When the hazelnuts first start to fall, my wife and I make sure that one of the fence panels sits slightly ajar, allowing Bertram access during the night to get his fill. But since there are so many falling every day, it would be remiss of us not to grab a few for ourselves.
Leaves are oval and have toothy edges Hazel trees are usually found growing next to a water source or round the edges of agricultural fields where water run off might collect in drainage ditches. The tree has multiple stems, which grow tall, unusually straight and are often used to make thumb sticks to aid ramblers in their excursions. The leaves are oval and have toothy edges. Grab a couple of handfuls of hazelnuts from the ground, but check them over for small holes – as the Filbert Weevil also considers these little nuts a tasty morsel – and store them in a container in a cool dark place for a couple of months to allow them to mature.

Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome One positive is that it is extremely rare for these behavioural changes to progress to the severe forms of dementia that humans suffer from. While dogs and cats can certainly exhibit some marked changes in old age, they are very unlikely to become severely debilitated by senility. In dogs and cats, dementia is referred to as ‘Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome’. Pet owners often quietly accept the declining interaction and strange behaviour as ‘just part of getting old’, but there are treatments and medications that can improve dementia symptoms. Typtophan supplements have become popular in recent years, as they increase natural serotonin levels – a neuro-chemical produced in our brains, associated with feelings of happiness and well-being. This has helped with anxiety and fearfulness, and is a gentle non-medicative option. Likewise, melatonin supplements have been used with dogs suffering from Sundowner Syndrome, as the hormone can help encourage normal sleeping patterns.

It’s not too surprising that our four legged friends suffer the same old age problems we do – aches and pains, fading sight and hearing, and sadly also the decline of mental acuity. Sometimes the symptoms are relatively subtle – becoming quieter, withdrawn, mild confusion and disorientation. However, more significant symptoms can occur, such as toileting indoors or outside litter trays, meowing or barking for no reason, anxiety or fearfulness at things that never used to bother them, and restlessness at night. This is sometimes referred to as ‘Sundowner Syndrome’, where a dog might bark incessantly at night and seem unable to settle, but conversely sleeps throughout the day!
Various medications are licensed for use in dogs with senility. Propentofyllin (VivitoninTM) increases the oxygenation of neurological and cardiac tissue, and has been shown to help with mental function and general demeanour. Selegeline (SelgianTM) – used in humans primarily to treat depression and Parkinsons – can have a dramatic effect on some of the more severe symptoms of senility in dogs. While these drugs aren’t licensed for cats, there are options available. As a pet owner you can do other things to help as well – feed a good quality diet rich in omega fatty acids and antioxidants, and keep taking dogs out for gentle daily exercise. Ensure any other health problems, such as arthritis or dental disease, are being treated adequately – pain associated with these issues can contribute to anxiety and depression. Keep the home environment as comfortable and stable as possible – moving furniture or pet beds can add to confusion and anxiety, as senile pets are less likely to cope well with change. Make sure you talk to your vet if you have any worries about an older pet.

Looking Good, Feeling Great with Matt Wagstaff
Brain workout As we mostly well know by now, physical exercise in any different shapes and sizes is great for the body – aiding our circulatory, respiratory and other bodily systems in keeping us healthy and fit. However, one of our most important organs often goes unmentioned in relation to exercise and keeping this particular organ healthy – the brain! This being our most complex organ, weighing on average 1.4kg, it is made up of hundreds of billions of neurons, divided up into four lobes that have various functions. The brain creates our every thought and action and develops all our memories, therefore keeping this organ in good working order is vital! With the rise of awful conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, which block and eventually kill nerve cells in the brain leading to memory loss, confusion and problems with spacial awareness, keeping the brain in a healthy functioning state can help prevent and reduce the onset of these horrible conditions. Here are some tips to keep the brain healthy.
The Local Answer
Physical activity Getting active, especially aerobically, helps the brain in many ways. Firstly, exercise improves the heart’s ability to powerfully pump oxygenated blood to the brain, allowing the brain to function at an optimal level. This initiates what is called brain plasticity – or the growth of new neural connections – in vital areas such as the hippocampus, which is the area of the brain we use for learning and memory. This helps in your ability to focus and deal with stressful situations. Performing exercises that involve coordination or planning, such as dancing, is good as this uses the brain in other ways in order to follow a routine or certain move within a game.

Style & Fashion with Carolyn Nicholls
Let’s hear it for the guys! I thought it was about time I devoted my article to you guys out there – after all, men want to look good too don’t they? That said, I am well aware that you want to do so effortlessly. I have some great news – the capsule wardrobe for men can be just as easy to achieve as the one for women and, not surprisingly, can have fewer basic types of clothing. As many men hate to shop, I am hoping you are all waiting with bated breath for the ‘how?’
a ‘fully corporate’ environment, I suspect you have a uniform – suit, tie, blazer etc. However, many employers are happy for their staff to dress less corporately these days.
Make sure your wardrobe has a few classic staples If you want to make a good impression, make sure your wardrobe has a few classic staples. A white oxford shirt, smart jeans and smart trainers or loafers will see you through – just make sure they are all clean and tidy! They will not only make you look good at work, but will see you transition perfectly to after work drinks. On warmer days, plain coloured tees and polo shirts are great casual looks and when it’s chilly, add a cashmere sweater for work and a light bomber in the colour of your choice for evenings. By the way, those jeans – avoid bootcut! They are not so good for men. Stick to slim, straight or tapered legs – try them all on and see which works best for you. The mirror won’t lie.
Swap jeans for chinos and trainers for brogues
guys, it is simply a massive turn-off. However, on those sunny days where shorts really are the best wear, try smart chino shorts (there are loads of colours to choose from) with a well-fitting short-sleeved shirt. You will be amazed how much better you look. And finally – I know we shouldn’t mention the unmentionables, – if you must have your underwear on display, please make sure they aren’t threadbare.
For those occasions when you

Medical Health with Holly Prince
A weight on our shoulders How are you sitting or standing right now? Is your back rounded and your chin protruding? If so, you may potentially be putting your muscles and bones under unnecessary pressure and strain. The human head is heavy! The head is the third heaviest part of the human body (after the skin and liver), largely due to the weight of the brain. It accounts for 8% of our total body weight, weighing about 10-12lbs, which is as heavy as a bowling ball.
Poor posture increases the load on the neck and spine When we sit in a poor posture, with our head in a forward position, it increases the load on the neck and spine. It causes the muscles on the back of the neck to lengthen whilst they are trying to contract to support your head’s weight, and this in turn puts pressure on the spine. The head gains its own weight for every inch it protrudes forward, which adds a lot of effort to the surrounding muscles to keep it upright. This makes the muscles go into spasm, which can then cause fatigue and dizziness. The more the head leans forward, the more flexed the body becomes. Over time, this can lead to a humpback posture sometimes seen

in elderly persons, which can become permanent and lead to fractures, and even contribute to a shortened lifespan.
Living a sedentary life causes musculoskeletal problems A lot of problems these days are caused by too much sitting – at office desks, in front of the TV, or working on personal computers. Living a largely sedentary life causes shortened, weakened muscles, and sitting for long periods of time can cause many musculoskeletal problems and general pains like headaches, neck pain, and lower back pain, which is becoming more and more common. Similarly, looking down at phones and other hand-held devices can cause headaches and neck ache, which can lead to longer-term problems relating to posture and movement. Ideally, the head and neck should be upright, with the bottom tips of the earlobes directly in line with the middle of the shoulders (front to back), and the hips. Become more aware of your body’s position throughout your everyday life. Remember to get up and stretch several times every 20-30 mins – taking a short walk down the corridor is better than not getting up at all. Having the spine curved forward too much also restricts breathing, as the ribs can’t be lifted as much. This leads to shallower breathing, which in turn decreases the amount of oxygen in the body, leading to lightheadedness and other
symptoms, and it can cause or exacerbate head and neck pains.
Keep moving to prevent your body from stiffening Train yourself to breathe correctly by using your abdomen, so that when you inhale the tummy expands, and when you exhale it moves inwards. Ensure you get daily exercise, whether it is a brisk walk to the shops, a session at the gym, or a dance class. Keep moving to prevent your body from stiffening up, and remember that more activity will actually decrease levels of fatigue – which will keep you going for longer.

New owners give local Nursing Home a face-lift
It has been one year since Fidelia Healthcare acquired Lypiatt Lodge (formerly Astley House) – a 31 bedroom Care Home in Montpellier, providing nursing care and dementia care to the elderly. Fidelia is a small, privatelyowned business run by two friends, whose ambition it is to create the best care homes in Gloucestershire. “Lypiatt Lodge is a unique home and fits exactly with our philosophy – to provide best-in-class care in beautiful surroundings, and you don’t get more beautiful than Montpellier!”, said owner Ashley.
a wonderful view of Montpellier. There is also a secure walled garden that some rooms can access directly. With dementia care in mind, Fidelia consulted leading dementia design specialists such as Stirling University to create something that doesn’t just look good, but is fit for purpose, ensuring stimulating and positive spaces. Fidelia’s owners take a hands-on approach in managing the 40 dedicated local people who work at the Home. “We have a wonderful staff group at Lypiatt. We strongly believe in taking care of our staff, paying above the national living wage and ensuring they are well trained and happy.”
Building a strong community network and raising awareness of Alzheimer’s
The new owners have wasted no time in renovating the home inside and out. Ashley continued: “We now have two lovely sitting rooms and have upgraded almost half the bedrooms to a very high standard. With the help of local Interior Designer Beltaine, the home now offers comfortable, modern and stylish living. When people talk about care homes, many images spring to mind – care staff in uniform, everyone sitting around a room in armchairs. We wanted to change the perception of care homes.”
Fidelia is building a strong network within the local community and raising awareness of Alzheimer’s is a key part of this. “This is really important to us, as we want to open up our home and link into local groups, clubs and schools” said Ashley. The Home will be holding a number of events at Lypiatt Lodge, as well as other local venues, and will be involved in the Memory Walk in September to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s.
Ensuring stimulating and positive spaces
All bedrooms are ensuite and larger than the average care home rooms, ensuring residents enjoy their space, and

Parenting & Guardianship with Roberta Smart
Peaceful parenting in 7 words I keep hearing from many ‘primary parents’ that they are dreading the teen years, and I always soothe them by reminding them that they will pretty much get whatever they expect, so expect the best and you just might be pleasantly surprised! But I also share these wisdoms that you might find enlightening. A simple, straightforward guide to parenting your teens, using my go-to coaching technique – The 7 Magic Words.
No Agree boundaries that you will all stick to – respect for all, telling the truth and listening to each other, how to act when we feel bad (mums and dads – and why not take this one for yourself forgiveness and belief in their potential. My kids are 15 and 18 now and a joy to be around – except when they’re not – in which case I simply leave them alone until they are, which seems to suit us all really well. By setting and following my own 7 Words Rules, my kids have grown to be sensitive to others, able to monitor and control their own behaviours and fully able to not only say sorry, but accept my sorry into the bargain – for which I am truly grateful. And I must admit, reaching that ‘yes’ is sheer joy – I hope I’ll see you there!

Luxury retirement living in the heart of Cheltenham
At Honeybourne Gate you can enjoy your independent luxury living lifestyle apartment with flexible care packages and numerous facilities for your relaxation and enjoyment, such as our fully licenced restaurant, fitness pool and hair salon to name but a few. Our beautiful complex is a haven of peace and quiet in the very heart of bustling Cheltenham, with bonus views of the surrounding countryside from our roof top terrace; here 360 degree panoramic views take your breath away. Where else in Cheltenham can you see The Malvern Hills, Tewkesbury, Cleeve Hill, the Racecourse, Pitville, Leckhampton, Coopers Hill, Chosen Hill, Robinswood Hill and May Hill?
Don’t just take our word for it, here is one of our great reviews from an owner’s son…
“The staff are lovely and thoughtful, nothing is too much trouble for them. The apartments are very well laid out and well equipped. My mother moved from her house where she had lived for 60 years – a really big move and a big decision. The staff have been fantastic in helping her settle in and, with the increasing occupation, plus the weekly activities (afternoon tea and matinee film showings in the great Movie Room) she is really enjoying her new surroundings. I would recommend anyone to seriously consider Honeybourne Gate as it really is retirement living at its best.”

The British green is seeing a comeback, while brown is on a huge downward move (23.3%) – it is a very 1970s colour, which was due an airing again, but seems to have failed. I predict yellow will increase in popularity during 2016 My prediction is that yellow will start to feature in the rank of popular colours for 2016. Ford released their new Mustang in a fantastic shade of yellow and some of the Superminis, such as the Fiat 500, really suit a bright sunshine or funky pastel shade. In fact, owners of yellow cars are often seen as upbeat, intelligent and young at heart, which seems to perfectly fit the beliefs of the time we currently live in.

Parish Plan The Parish Council will soon be starting an exciting new project leading to the creation of a Parish Plan for Charlton Kings, which will help shape a vision for our community and its development over the next 5-10 years. We want to involve as many people as we can in this process and we will be asking for views from everyone who lives, works and plays in Charlton Kings on a wide range of issues. We would particularly like to know what it is about our community that is important to you and how you think it can be improved. This will help us more closely reflect your priorities and aspirations in our decision making going forward. As a first step, we will be asking you to respond to a questionnaire on a range of topics relating to the Charlton Kings community. The questionnaire will be included as an insert in the October edition of The Local Answer in Charlton Kings and most of Battledown and Charlton Park. You will also be able to access a more comprehensive set of questions online and hard copies will be available to complete at various locations around the village. This will be followed by an Open Parish Meeting in October, at which you will have the opportunity to put forward your views and get involved. More details of this meeting will be in the next edition of The Local Answer. Our proposed timetable for completing the project is: • October 2016: Questionnaire available. • 24th October 2016: Open Parish Meeting, which all residents will be welcome to attend. • November 2016: Analysis of responses. • December 2016 – January 2017: Preparation of Parish Plan. • 16th January 2017: Open Parish Meeting for feedback on emerging issues. • 27th March 2017: Completed Parish Plan approved at Parish Meeting. Your opinions and support for this project are very important to us – this is a real opportunity for you to get involved in your local community. We look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you at our open meeting in October.

Introducing TLA Travel
The Local Answer Magazine works as a great reference tool for services and products, helping to answer those questions that occupy our minds on a daily basis – from “who can fit my kitchen?” to “who provides elderly care in the local area?” It also encourages us to think about how we use our free time and what activities are available for us to enjoy with friends and family. Travel has become very important – not just the once a year family holiday in the summer, but short breaks all year round ranging from theatre trips in London to cruises along the Rhine. But in a world of information overload, how do we ensure we get exactly what we want quickly and reliably? Relaxin’ Barbados Did you blink and miss summer? Worry not! If you’re up for some lateyear sun, try Cyprus or Sicily – who knows, you might meet a gorgeous local called Alessandro, Antonio or Anastasia too … Alternatively, for serious sun and relaxin’, there’s Barbados.
Other excursions include Oistins’ famous fish fries or fine dining at The Cliff Restaurant south of Speightstown. If a food and relaxation theme is emerging, it’s because both are unavoidable. Island life is so chilled and the food, at all price levels, is wonderful. Try self-catering too, with
Marvel at North Point’s cliffs In the morning, take a chauffeurdriven tour and be amazed how reasonably priced (and relaxing) a few hours in an air-conditioned Mercedes is. Head north through Friendship, pass sugarcane fields, then marvel at North Point’s cliffs where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean. After following the coast through Walkers Beach and intriguingly-named Cattlewash, lunch at The Bay Tavern, St Martin’s Bay. Snapper is their thing, with the island’s best macaroni pie and local Banks Beer. It’s authentic food served simply – and it’s delicious.
Repeat often Travel independently or bag a deal from specialists such as Blue Bay Travel or your local travel consultant. Then look forward to chillin’ at the Sugar Cane Club and Spa – your stylish ‘adults only’ resort on the west coast near Speightstown. Within hours of landing, you’re relaxing on the balcony of your luxury apartment or enjoying a massage in the spa. Next, sip rum and coconut, or a Mauby, by the pool and contemplate supper in La Salsa restaurant or the authentic Barbadian rum shop.
flying fish, cou cou and salt bread from Jordan’s Supermarket, a Speightstown landmark – and local soca star Rupee on the radio. Or meet locals at The Fisherman’s Pub (‘Get Hooked on Us!’) while enjoying the caress of a Carribbean breeze.
Now repeat as often as possible for the duration of your stay. By the time you fly home you’ll be feeling the most relaxed you have for years. That’s Barbados for you. For a little island in the sun, there sure is lots to eat and do (or not do)! Need a break? Try relaxin’ Barbados!
Luxury, relaxation and seclusion The Sugar Cane Club offers luxury, relaxation and seclusion. It’s also close to local beaches and fascinating historic neighbourhoods. Did we say beaches? The Almond Beach Resorts’ pristine sands are just a short walk – or a shorter minibus ride – away.
Sadly you can’t book an ‘Al Hidden Holiday’ with The Local Answer, but hopefully you’ll be inspired to travel!

Wildlife Matters
with Jenny Stevens of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust
Listen out for the chirruping cricket brown colouration means it’s not the prettiest of the hopping community, but what it lacks in looks, it makes up for in song!
A genetic mutation makes them quite a spectacle
Be you in fields, woodland or gardens, the irregular ‘chirp chirp’ can be heard right through days and into nights, with the culprit very close by.
What it lacks in looks, it makes up for in song However, if we’re being picky, Walt got Jiminy a bit wrong. Crickets have far longer legs and antennae than grasshoppers. But would a gangly Jiminy have been quite so cute? More often than not, it is the dark bush cricket you can hear here, there and everywhere. Common in Southern England and Wales, its dull

at the Neu Lindsey reserve near Nailsworth.
Its buzz sounds like overhead electricity cables Then there’s the Roesel’s bush cricket – a species that has spread from it’s stronghold in the South-East with our changing climate. Its penetrating buzz sounds like overhead electricity cables. No less impressive than the other bushcrickets, it has a distinctive yellow margin around the saddle (pronotum), behind its eyes. So this September, check out your garden, park, green space or nature reserve and keep an eye (and ear) out for all things that hop and chirp. You may just find something otherworldly.

On the other end of the spectrum, the orthoptera (that’s something in the grasshopper or cricket family) making the news more regularly is a rather more colourful specimen. Along with two other grasshopper species, the field grasshopper – a usually inconspicuous insect – has a tendency to succumb to a genetic mutation, leaving it bright pink in colour. They are quite a spectacle for the finder, so it’s no wonder they’ve made the headlines. Unfortunately, these bright pink lovelies don’t tend to last long. Being so indiscreet, they are easy prey for predators and are usually gobbled up quick-smart. So be sure to take a photo should you spot one! Something a lot less common, but iconic in the county, is the great green bush cricket. This giant of the insect world can reach lengths of 7cm, making it the largest of our bush crickets. And it spends its time in trees and on grassland. In contrast to the dark bush cricket, their song is loud and long, being likened to the noise of a sewing machine. Search out this camouflaged creature © M Foley
I don’t like crickets. I love them. With sightings of bright and colourful alien-esque creatures popping up in the county, I thought I’d shed some light on these much overlooked insects. Throughout summer and heading into autumn, the calls and noises of crickets and grasshoppers are familiar sounds. Echoing the muchloved character of conscience in Disney’s Pinnochio, you may feel that, at this time of year, there is constantly a cricket chirruping on your shoulder. And you’re not far off.

In The Garden with Julia Smith
Autumn is coming September is often a lovely month and has the added appeal that the children are back at school! Sow salad crops for autumn and winter use. Things like Corn Salad, Land Cress and Winter Purslane can all be sown into open ground, although they will crop better if covered by a cloche or fleece as the weather gets colder. You can use the plastic containers that mushrooms come in, and keep them near the back door to snip at.
don’t cut into the old bald wood as it will not regenerate (in cases like this it is better to buy a new plant). Younger plants can do with a harder prune to keep them bushy.
Use a biological control against vine weevil grubs
Now is also a good time to use a biological control (nematodes) against vine weevil grubs – you know the little beasts that, as grubs, lie in wait in pots of cyclamen, primulas, begonias and other species and eat the roots away until the poor plant keels over. The adult weevils make unsightly notches on the leaves of plants such as rhododendrons, which Prune young lavender will not kill them, but look horrid. plants to keep them bushy The biological control is good to September is a good time to give use on potted plants, but is not so established lavender plants a clip – effective in the garden – depending on the type of soil. You can buy them from the garden centre or online, and from what I remember you have to send off for the little ‘critters’, as they don’t have a shelf life, and they get posted to you. Follow the instructions on the packet, mix up the microscopic nematode with water and drench the pots. Don’t let the compost dry out.
The Local Answer
Leave a passage for frogs and toads Cover small ponds with netting to keep the falling leaves out as the trees start to turn. I usually leave a passage through for toads, frogs and other creatures so they don’t get all caught up! Don’t forget to buy sweetpea seeds – you can plant them next month and they always do better planted in the autumn, as they get away quicker in the spring. A strange note to leave on, but if you want to avoid being one of the many people who visit the Accident and Emergency Department in the local hospital, do remember to put some sort of top onto bamboo canes. My sister uses empty snail shells, which actually looks rather decorative and perhaps serves as a warning to our slimey friends!

A desk for homework The end of summer means back to school for the school age children in our lives, marking the beginning of busy sports schedules, homework and school projects. Finding a place where the kids can study without being disturbed can be a challenge in itself, but a good desk will help homework become a task to look forward to. Here are a few simple ideas to help your young scholar on their way.
great wallpapers currently available.
Chalk-painted Chalk paint applied to an old table or desk will become a fun, functional and attractive piece of furniture. Used for writing notes and messages, this desk will soon become a favourite for any child or teenager.
Space saving solutions
A piece of wood fitted to the wall with hinges that easily flips down to The use of reclaimed wood and vintage become a desk and clips back against crates combine well to make a one-off the wall when not in use is a great desk. Old bins and wooden crates can space saving idea. A bed and desk find new life as functioning storage.
Reclaimed wood
solution is a popular and sensible choice, as the desk can easily be rolled away back under the bed when not in use. If you have an awkward corner to fill, consider having a desktop custom cut to fit the space. A corner can make a cosy spot for a desk.
Storage bin Sturdy metal or plastic storage bins fit neatly under any desk. This choice would work perfectly in a child’s room. Open bins beneath a desk are easier to access than closed drawers – just right for keeping stationery, paper and files close at hand.
Add colour and pattern Give an old desk or breakfast table a new lease of life with a few coats of glossy colour. If your child has the luxury of an entire room to themselves, consider using a larger table, as this will allow plenty of room to spread out and will keep the walls free for storage and seating. Bath time a struggle? It needn’t be ...
Wash and relax with peace of mind For some of us the bathroom no longer holds the charm it once did. Gone are the days of soaking in the bath, and practically has become foremost in our minds … “We got in the bath, but how on earth are we getting out?” We specialise in taking baths out and replacing them with low level shower cubicles. All cubicles are designed with safety and comfort so you can wash and relax with peace of mind that getting out will be easy.
Unobtrusive mobility solutions Our goal is to design your bathroom so that you can walk in without even realising it has been altered to meet your mobility needs. We provide unobtrusive mobility solutions from a simple grab rail, high raise comfort WC pan, slip-resistant flooring, easy to use taps and much more, and it’s all fitted by our own inhouse work force – no sub-contractors!
At Severn Vale Bathrooms we never use tiles, but instead opt for easy clean UPVC panels. There are numerous colours and designs to choose from. The benefits of panels are that there is no grout to discolour, they reduce condensation and, above all, they are low maintenance. So, if your bathing needs are changing and your bathroom needs a revamp, visit our extensive showroom and see what we can offer, or alternatively call for a free quotation.

A shower at one end gives you the best of both worlds. There are various designs and shapes available to fit most bathrooms. Base Rate Cut The Bank of England has finally cut its base rate from 0.5% to 0.25%. It had been predicted for a while, but finally came to fruition in the wake of disappointing economic statistics following the EU referendum result. It was March 2009 when it was last changed and the consistency of the rate at 0.5% has brought a stability that helped see a lot of people through the recessionary period of the banking crisis and into a fairly prolonged spell of business success since.
What will the impact be for savers and borrowers?
HARDWOOD
So why did it need to change now and what will the impact be for savers and borrowers? The answer to why is fairly straightforward. The Bank’s Governor was very clear in his message that we are in a period of economic uncertainty following the vote to leave the EU and he sees it as his job to help calm those waves of uncertainty. But will it really help? It’s going to do nothing for savers of course. Interest rates on money held in cash savings accounts have been at an all-time low since the previous cut in 2009. A reduction of 0.25% is hardly going to change that, unless the banks decide they need you to pay them for looking after your money! It sounds far-fetched, but I wouldn’t put anything past them.

The Local Answer
Borrowers should be better off. All of the major banks have followed the lead of the Bank of England and cut their own base rates to 0.25%. If your overdraft or loan is linked to base rate, you should see an immediate reduction in the cost of your borrowing. If you don’t then you shouldn’t be shy in asking why not. Those borrowing at a fixed rate will see no change. You chose, when taking out your loan, to protect yourself from rate increases, which means you gave up the right to benefit from a reduction. Will it work? Personally I think it’s a lot of hot air. Of course it’s the right way for the Governor to behave in the circumstances, but the change is so marginal that I don’t believe it can have any significant effect.
There are much greater worries for the UK than a tiny cut in Bank base rate The continuing decline in the value of the pound, the potential for inflation to rise again, the risk of job cuts if uncertainty remains for too long and the prospect of the UK entering a period of prolonged recession are all greater worries for us than a tiny cut in Bank base rate.

Keeping the community safe The summer has seen an increase in Anti Social Behaviour and associated issues in Sandford Park, particularly near the High Street side of the park. My colleagues and I have been working closely with local residents to try to reduce and tackle long-term issues in the area. While many of the issues are expected over the summer months – including street drinkers and rough sleepers – they still cause problems for local residents and users of the park, and we cannot resolve them by simply arresting everybody. The underlying issues that cause people to be on the street are complex and need to be looked at – we are undertaking this work and will hopefully see an improvement over the coming months.

Please my I hand you over to my colleague Sergeant Jo Fletcher, who will be contributing to these pages over the coming months. I work on the Local Investigation Team here at Cheltenham alongside Simon. I have 19 years’ service and live in Charlton Kings with my partner and two young children. I currently have the responsibility for overseeing the dwelling burglary investigations in Cheltenham and emerging crime hot spots and series. Dealing with burglary – both the victims and offenders – has been a major part of my work during my career, and it is a crime that I feel very passionately about. I have witnessed the devastation it can cause, especially amongst the elderly.
The reduction of dwelling burglaries is a strategic priority Historically, the number of burglaries committed within Gloucestershire, and in particular Cheltenham, has been disproportionately higher than the rest of the country, so the Force has made the reduction of dwelling burglaries a strategic priority. Our current burglary rate in Cheltenham averages out at about one per day. We have had some really successful results this year and, as a result, our numbers are down greatly on last year – but we know we cannot be complacent. I will be using The Local Answer to keep you up to date with what is going on, including burglary prevention advice and things that I think you should be aware of, so we can all play our part within the community to keep us all safe. On another note, we are still experiencing a high volume of thefts from motor vehicles – mostly from unlocked vehicles. So please take care to remove valuables and lock your car.
