Blackberry Bonanza! September is a great time to go blackberry picking with the family. Take advantage of and explore our wonderful countryside whilst collecting some fresh ingredients to make these delicious recipes!
Blackberry Coulis Ingredients: 250g blackberries; 50g golden caster sugar; 100ml water; ½ teaspoon vanilla extract. Method: 1 Put the blackberries, sugar and water into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes until the fruit is soft. Stir in the vanilla, remove from the heat and cool a little. 2 Tip the mixture into a blender and puree, then strain through a sieve, rubbing it through with a spoon. 3 Serve warm or chilled. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
Blackberry and clotted cream shortcake Ingredients: For the cake: 300g self raising flour; 1tsp baking powder; pinch of salt; 140g butter, chilled and cut into small pieces; 100g golden caster sugar; 75ml buttermilk; 1 egg, beaten. For the filling: 500g blackberries; 3tbsp golden caster sugar; 275g pot clotted cream; icing sugar, to serve. Method: 1 Heat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan/gas mark 5). Tip the flour, baking powder and salt into a mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub everything together with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar. 2 Make a well in the middle of the flour mixture, then tip

in the buttermilk and egg. Gently work the mixture together until it forms a soft, sticky dough. 3 On a lightly floured surface, knead the mixture for a few minutes, then mould it into an 18cm round and put on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden and risen and a skewer comes out clean when inserted into the middle. Leave to cool. 4 Lightly mash the blackberries with the sugar. Slice the shortcake in half and spread the bottom layer with clotted cream. Spoon berries over the cream, then top with the second shortcake layer. Dust with icing sugar and slice.

Hazelnuts Sex on the Beach If you’re thinking of planning a last-minute holiday for September, this popular drink is sure to get you in the mood – and it would be rude not to have a few cheeky cocktails while you plan! The most well-known claim to the invention of Sex on the Beach dates back to the autumn of 1987 in Florida, USA. A new drink – peach schnapps – had just started to be distributed and, with thousands of tourists expected to visit for the spring holiday, the distributor created a contest to popularise the new beverage. The bar that sold the most peach schnapps would receive a bonus of $1000 and the bartender responsible for the highest sales would receive $100. Ted, a young bartender at Confetti’s Bar, mixed peach schnapps with vodka, orange juice and grenadine, and was soon asked what the cocktail was called. He immediately thought of the main reason why people came to Florida for their spring break – the beach and sex! “Sex on the Beach!” he replied. As the drink became more and more popular, thousands of students returned home and requested the cocktail at their local bar. The bartenders didn’t know how to make the drink, as they had never heard of it, so they asked around and this led to the multiple variations of the drink. Ingredients: Ice; 50ml vodka; 25ml peach schnapps; 50ml orange juice; 25ml grenadine. Method: 1 Add ice, vodka and peach schnapps to a highball glass. 2 Top up with orange juice and drizzle grenadine to create a ‘sunset’ appearance.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY Why not have a Mocktail? For a non-alcoholic alternative, mix 50ml cranberry juice, 50ml grapefruit juice and 25ml peach nectar. Garnish with an orange slice. The Local Answer
Bertram the Badger is an annual visitor to my back garden, and for good reason. Reaching over my back fence are the branches of the Hazel tree and it’s about this time of year that it starts to shed its fruit. This makes spending autumn afternoons in the garden a risky affair, as they have been known to leave small bruises if dislodged by a particularly strong gust of wind. Bertram, however, can’t get enough of this nutritional nutty nourishment. When the hazelnuts first start to fall, my wife and I make sure that one of the fence panels sits slightly ajar, allowing Bertram access during the night to get his fill. But since there are so many falling every day, it would be remiss of us not to grab a few for ourselves.
Leaves are oval and have toothy edges Hazel trees are usually found growing next to a water source or round the edges of agricultural fields where water run off might collect in drainage ditches. The tree has multiple stems, which grow tall, unusually straight and are often used to make thumb sticks to aid ramblers in their excursions. The leaves are oval and have toothy edges. Grab a couple of handfuls of hazelnuts from the ground, but check them over for small holes – as the Filbert Weevil also considers these little nuts a tasty morsel – and store them in a container in a cool dark place for a couple of months to allow them to mature.
Great for topping trifles or finely ground and sprinkled over a hot chocolate By the end of the year you should have a nice little natural treat to enjoy. Roughly chopped, they’re great for topping trifles, or finely ground they can add a nutty twist if sprinkled over a frothy hot chocolate. If you’re not 100% sure that the plant you’re picking is safe for human consumption, don’t pick it. If you’re prone to food allergies, or pregnant, always seek medical advice before consuming anything foraged in the wild.

Brain workout As we mostly well know by now, physical exercise in any different shapes and sizes is great for the body – aiding our circulatory, respiratory and other bodily systems in keeping us healthy and fit. However, one of our most important organs often goes unmentioned in relation to exercise and keeping this particular organ healthy – the brain! This being our most complex organ, weighing on average 1.4kg, it is made up of hundreds of billions of neurons, divided up into four lobes that have various functions. The brain creates our every thought and action and develops all our memories, therefore keeping this organ in good working order is vital! With the rise of awful conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, which block and eventually kill nerve cells in the brain leading to memory loss, confusion and problems with spacial awareness, keeping the brain in a healthy functioning state can help prevent and reduce the onset of these horrible conditions. Here are some tips to keep the brain healthy.
The Local Answer
Physical activity Getting active, especially aerobically, helps the brain in many ways. Firstly, exercise improves the heart’s ability to powerfully pump oxygenated blood to the brain, allowing the brain to function at an optimal level. This initiates what is called brain plasticity – or the growth of new neural connections – in vital areas such as the hippocampus, which is the area of the brain we use for learning and memory. This helps in your ability to focus and deal with stressful situations. Performing exercises that involve coordination or planning, such as dancing, is good as this uses the brain in other ways in order to follow a routine or certain move within a game.

I predict yellow will increase in popularity during 2016 My prediction is that yellow will start to feature in the rank of popular colours for 2016. Ford released their new Mustang in a fantastic shade of yellow and some of the Superminis, such as the Fiat 500, really suit a bright sunshine or funky pastel shade. In fact, owners of yellow cars are often seen as upbeat, intelligent and young at heart, which seems to perfectly fit the beliefs of the time we currently live in.

Medical Health with Holly Prince
A weight on our shoulders How are you sitting or standing right now? Is your back rounded and your chin protruding? If so, you may potentially be putting your muscles and bones under unnecessary pressure and strain. The human head is heavy! The head is the third heaviest part of the human body (after the skin and liver), largely due to the weight of the brain. It accounts for 8% of our total body weight, weighing about 10-12lbs, which is as heavy as a bowling ball.
Poor posture increases the load on the neck and spine When we sit in a poor posture, with our head in a forward position, it increases the load on the neck and spine. It causes the muscles on the back of the neck to lengthen whilst they are trying to contract to support your head’s weight, and this in turn puts pressure on the spine. The head gains its own weight for every inch it protrudes forward, which adds a lot of effort to the surrounding muscles to keep it upright. This makes the muscles go into spasm, which can then cause fatigue and dizziness. The more the head leans forward, the more flexed the body becomes. Over time, this can lead to a humpback posture sometimes seen

in elderly persons, which can become permanent and lead to fractures, and even contribute to a shortened lifespan.
Living a sedentary life causes musculoskeletal problems A lot of problems these days are caused by too much sitting – at office desks, in front of the TV, or working on personal computers. Living a largely sedentary life causes shortened, weakened muscles, and sitting for long periods of time can cause many musculoskeletal problems and general pains like headaches, neck pain, and lower back pain, which is becoming more and more common. Similarly, looking down at phones and other hand-held devices can cause headaches and neck ache, which can lead to longer-term problems relating to posture and movement. Ideally, the head and neck should be upright, with the bottom tips of the earlobes directly in line with the middle of the shoulders (front to back), and the hips. Become more aware of your body’s position throughout your everyday life. Remember to get up and stretch several times every 20-30 mins – taking a short walk down the corridor is better than not getting up at all. Having the spine curved forward too much also restricts breathing, as the ribs can’t be lifted as much. This leads to shallower breathing, which in turn decreases the amount of oxygen in the body, leading to lightheadedness and other
symptoms, and it can cause or exacerbate head and neck pains.
Keep moving to prevent your body from stiffening Train yourself to breathe correctly by using your abdomen, so that when you inhale the tummy expands, and when you exhale it moves inwards. Ensure you get daily exercise, whether it is a brisk walk to the shops, a session at the gym, or a dance class. Keep moving to prevent your body from stiffening up, and remember that more activity will actually decrease levels of fatigue – which will keep you going for longer.

When writing this column, I have not long received the sad news that my good friend, Cabinet colleague and fellow Longlevens councillor Jim Porter had passed away. Jim had been bravely fighting cancer in recent times, but never lost his enthusiasm for his council work and for serving his community. He continued to work in his role as Cabinet Member for the Environment and as Longlevens councillor pretty much until his passing – because he really cared about it and genuinely enjoyed what he did.
Serving communities and changing things for the better Politicians often get a bad press. Sometimes they deserve it, but in reality most people go into public office for the right reasons – to serve their communities and to change things for the better. Being a local councillor is a million miles removed from the political game-playing and point-scoring at Westminster, but we often get tarred with the same brush. Often people who hold public office help out in the community in other ways too. Jim was no different – he was a long-standing member of the Rotary Club at Kingsholm, he was an active member at Holy Trinity Church in Longlevens and for ten years was Chairman of Governors at Oxstalls School. I remember telling an astounded opposition councillor, in responding to a mischievous question, that Jim had never received a penny for his work as a councillor during all the time he had served.

Jim will leave a big legacy, but one major part of it will be the new waste and recycling service to be introduced next year. We will be renewing the fleet of recycling vehicles, allowing us to collect cardboard, mixed plastics and textiles from the doorstep. As well as making recycling a good deal easier for a lot of people, we estimate this could add about 5% to our recycling figures. Local councillors frequently get criticism and it’s right that we should be challenged and held to account for our decisions. But I believe most councillors of all parties work hard and do it for the right reasons. Jim was definitely one of them. @cllrpauljames

Listen out for the chirruping cricket brown colouration means it’s not the prettiest of the hopping community, but what it lacks in looks, it makes up for in song!
A genetic mutation makes them quite a spectacle
Be you in fields, woodland or gardens, the irregular ‘chirp chirp’ can be heard right through days and into nights, with the culprit very close by.
What it lacks in looks, it makes up for in song However, if we’re being picky, Walt got Jiminy a bit wrong. Crickets have far longer legs and antennae than grasshoppers. But would a gangly Jiminy have been quite so cute? More often than not, it is the dark bush cricket you can hear here, there and everywhere. Common in Southern England and Wales, its dull

at the Neu Lindsey reserve near Nailsworth.
Its buzz sounds like overhead electricity cables Then there’s the Roesel’s bush cricket – a species that has spread from it’s stronghold in the South-East with our changing climate. Its penetrating buzz sounds like overhead electricity cables. No less impressive than the other bushcrickets, it has a distinctive yellow margin around the saddle (pronotum), behind its eyes. So this September, check out your garden, park, green space or nature reserve and keep an eye (and ear) out for all things that hop and chirp. You may just find something otherworldly.

On the other end of the spectrum, the orthoptera (that’s something in the grasshopper or cricket family) making the news more regularly is a rather more colourful specimen. Along with two other grasshopper species, the field grasshopper – a usually inconspicuous insect – has a tendency to succumb to a genetic mutation, leaving it bright pink in colour. They are quite a spectacle for the finder, so it’s no wonder they’ve made the headlines. Unfortunately, these bright pink lovelies don’t tend to last long. Being so indiscreet, they are easy prey for predators and are usually gobbled up quick-smart. So be sure to take a photo should you spot one! Something a lot less common, but iconic in the county, is the great green bush cricket. This giant of the insect world can reach lengths of 7cm, making it the largest of our bush crickets. And it spends its time in trees and on grassland. In contrast to the dark bush cricket, their song is loud and long, being likened to the noise of a sewing machine. Search out this camouflaged creature © M Foley
I don’t like crickets. I love them. With sightings of bright and colourful alien-esque creatures popping up in the county, I thought I’d shed some light on these much overlooked insects. Throughout summer and heading into autumn, the calls and noises of crickets and grasshoppers are familiar sounds. Echoing the muchloved character of conscience in Disney’s Pinnochio, you may feel that, at this time of year, there is constantly a cricket chirruping on your shoulder. And you’re not far off.

Now repeat as often as possible for the duration of your stay. By the time you fly home you’ll be feeling the most relaxed you have for years. That’s Barbados for you. For a little island in the sun, there sure is lots to eat and do (or not do)! Need a break? Try relaxin’ Barbados!
Luxury, relaxation and seclusion The Sugar Cane Club offers luxury, relaxation and seclusion. It’s also close to local beaches and fascinating historic neighbourhoods. Did we say beaches? The Almond Beach Resorts’ pristine sands are just a short walk – or a shorter minibus ride – away.

A desk for homework The end of summer means back to school for the school age children in our lives, marking the beginning of busy sports schedules, homework and school projects. Finding a place where the kids can study without being disturbed can be a challenge in itself, but a good desk will help homework become a task to look forward to. Here are a few simple ideas to help your young scholar on their way.
great wallpapers currently available.
Chalk-painted Chalk paint applied to an old table or desk will become a fun, functional and attractive piece of furniture. Used for writing notes and messages, this desk will soon become a favourite for any child or teenager.
Space saving solutions
A piece of wood fitted to the wall with hinges that easily flips down to The use of reclaimed wood and vintage become a desk and clips back against crates combine well to make a one-off the wall when not in use is a great desk. Old bins and wooden crates can space saving idea. A bed and desk find new life as functioning storage.
Reclaimed wood
solution is a popular and sensible choice, as the desk can easily be rolled away back under the bed when not in use. If you have an awkward corner to fill, consider having a desktop custom cut to fit the space. A corner can make a cosy spot for a desk.
Storage bin Sturdy metal or plastic storage bins fit neatly under any desk. This choice would work perfectly in a child’s room. Open bins beneath a desk are easier to access than closed drawers – just right for keeping stationery, paper and files close at hand.
Add colour and pattern Give an old desk or breakfast table a new lease of life with a few coats of glossy colour. If your child has the luxury of an entire room to themselves, consider using a larger table, as this will allow plenty of room to spread out and will keep the walls free for storage and seating. Let your young person go crazy with whatever decoration they fancy. Try a bit of decoupage – add pictures from comics, glossy magazines, newspapers or any of the

Bath time a struggle? It needn’t be ...
Wash and relax with peace of mind For some of us the bathroom no longer holds the charm it once did. Gone are the days of soaking in the bath, and practically has become foremost in our minds … “We got in the bath, but how on earth are we getting out?” We specialise in taking baths out and replacing them with low level shower cubicles. All cubicles are designed with safety and comfort so you can wash and relax with peace of mind that getting out will be easy.
Unobtrusive mobility solutions Our goal is to design your bathroom so that you can walk in without even realising it has been altered to meet your mobility needs. We provide unobtrusive mobility solutions from a simple grab rail, high raise comfort WC pan, slip-resistant flooring, easy to use taps and much more, and it’s all fitted by our own inhouse work force – no sub-contractors!
At Severn Vale Bathrooms we never use tiles, but instead opt for easy clean UPVC panels. There are numerous colours and designs to choose from. The benefits of panels are that there is no grout to discolour, they reduce condensation and, above all, they are low maintenance. So, if your bathing needs are changing and your bathroom needs a revamp, visit our extensive showroom and see what we can offer, or alternatively call for a free quotation.

In The Garden with Julia Smith
Autumn is coming September is often a lovely month and has the added appeal that the children are back at school! Sow salad crops for autumn and winter use. Things like Corn Salad, Land Cress and Winter Purslane can all be sown into open ground, although they will crop better if covered by a cloche or fleece as the weather gets colder. You can use the plastic containers that mushrooms come in, and keep them near the back door to snip at.
don’t cut into the old bald wood as it will not regenerate (in cases like this it is better to buy a new plant). Younger plants can do with a harder prune to keep them bushy.
Use a biological control against vine weevil grubs
Now is also a good time to use a biological control (nematodes) against vine weevil grubs – you know the little beasts that, as grubs, lie in wait in pots of cyclamen, primulas, begonias and other species and eat the roots away until the poor plant keels over. The adult weevils make unsightly notches on the leaves of plants such as rhododendrons, which Prune young lavender will not kill them, but look horrid. plants to keep them bushy The biological control is good to September is a good time to give use on potted plants, but is not so established lavender plants a clip – effective in the garden – depending on the type of soil. You can buy them from the garden centre or online, and from what I remember you have to send off for the little ‘critters’, as they don’t have a shelf life, and they get posted to you. Follow the instructions on the packet, mix up the microscopic nematode with water and drench the pots. Don’t let the compost dry out.

Leave a passage for frogs and toads Cover small ponds with netting to keep the falling leaves out as the trees start to turn. I usually leave a passage through for toads, frogs and other creatures so they don’t get all caught up! Don’t forget to buy sweetpea seeds – you can plant them next month and they always do better planted in the autumn, as they get away quicker in the spring. A strange note to leave on, but if you want to avoid being one of the many people who visit the Accident and Emergency Department in the local hospital, do remember to put some sort of top onto bamboo canes. My sister uses empty snail shells, which actually looks rather decorative and perhaps serves as a warning to our slimey friends!

Money Matters with Roger Downes of Andorran
Base Rate Cut The Bank of England has finally cut its base rate from 0.5% to 0.25%. It had been predicted for a while, but finally came to fruition in the wake of disappointing economic statistics following the EU referendum result. It was March 2009 when it was last changed and the consistency of the rate at 0.5% has brought a stability that helped see a lot of people through the recessionary period of the banking crisis and into a fairly prolonged spell of business success since.
What will the impact be for savers and borrowers? So why did it need to change now and what will the impact be for savers and borrowers? The answer to why is fairly straightforward. The Bank’s Governor was very clear in his message that we are in a period of economic uncertainty following the vote to leave the EU and he sees it as his job to help calm those waves of uncertainty. But will it really help? It’s going to do nothing for savers of course. Interest rates on money held in cash savings accounts have been at an all-time low since the previous cut in 2009. A reduction of 0.25% is hardly going to change that, unless the banks decide they need you to pay them for looking after your money! It sounds far-fetched, but I wouldn’t put anything past them.
An immediate reduction in the cost of borrowing at base rate Borrowers should be better off. All of the major banks have followed the lead of the Bank of England and cut their own base rates to 0.25%. If your overdraft or loan is linked to base rate, you should see an immediate reduction in the cost of your borrowing. If you don’t then you shouldn’t be shy in asking why not. Those borrowing at a fixed rate will see no change. You chose, when taking out your loan, to protect yourself from rate increases, which means you gave up the right to benefit from a reduction. Will it work? Personally I think it’s a lot of hot air. Of course it’s the right way for the Governor to behave in the circumstances, but the change is so marginal that I don’t believe it can have any significant effect.
There are much greater worries for the UK than a tiny cut in Bank base rate The continuing decline in the value of the pound, the potential for inflation to rise again, the risk of job cuts if uncertainty remains for too long and the prospect of the UK entering a period of prolonged recession are all greater worries for us than a tiny cut in Bank base rate.
