We’re very excited to announce our new Photography Competition, where we’re giving you the chance to become a cover star! Check out the competition on the centre pages to find out how your photo could be on one of our 2018 covers! Julia Smith shares her tips for prolonging flowering displays and keeping your garden colourful, as the early flowering shrubs finish and we start to prepare for the autumn months. Read more in her ‘In the Garden’ article. And, while you’re out in the garden, you may like to introduce some bee-friendly plants. Caroline Shelley explains the struggle bees are currently facing and how you can make small changes to help these garden friends fight back in ‘Wildlife Matters’. This month’s ‘Delicious Dish’ combines two dessert favourites – the humble crumble and the ever-popular pie – to create a tasty blueberry and plum crumble pie, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. Try it out and let us know how you get on! As always, Roger Jackson brings you a variety of sports stories, from Tewkesbury Park Golf Club to Winchcombe Town Football Club. And remember, you can read full articles and many more stories online – just head to www.thelocalanswer.co.uk .

3 Prick the pastry all over with a fork . Line with baking paper and fill with baking beans. Transfer to a baking tray and blind-bake the pastry for 10 -15 minutes. Lift out the paper and beans, return the case to the oven for a further five minutes, remove and set aside but leave the oven on. 4 To make the crumble topping: In a medium-size saucepan, melt the butter and continue to heat it over a medium heat until it foams up and smells nutty. Remove from the heat and stir in the salt , sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and flour. Mix in the chopped walnuts, then put to one side. 5 To make the filling: In a large bowl, stir together the blueberries and chopped plums with the sugar and 3 tbsp of the crumble. Spoon into the pre-baked pastry case. Bake for 20 minutes, remove from the oven and cover with the rest of the crumble. Put back into the oven for a further 20 minutes. Serve with your choice of cream, custard or ice-cream.

They are a wellloved garden visitor and one that we have perhaps taken for granted considering the crucial role they play in pollination. Bees are a type of flying insect and w e h a ve 2 5 s p e c i e s i n t h e U K . Species such as the bumblebee are more common and can be seen b u z z i n g a b o u t o u r g a r d e n s, w h i l s t rarer varieties, such as the Great Yellow Bumblebee, are only found on the North coast and some Scottish islands.
Our Our landscape landscape w would ould llook ook very very d different ifferent w without ithout tthem hem Bees are of great importance for the pollination of many of the foods and crops we rely on. A l l i s n ot l o st t h o u g h , a s s m a l l c h a n g es at h o m e c a n h e l p t h es e garden friends fight back . The insects need bee-friendly plants and by having these in your garden, be it in a border or a pot , you can help. Choose plants marked as bee friendly when visiting the garden centre and if you have a gravel or tarmac front garden/driveway, consider adding a couple of pots out front – the loss of our front gardens to car parking has taken its toll on pollinators. Another thing you can do is allow a part of your lawn to grow wild. If grass is left un-mown it ’s likely plants such as clover will grow, which are great for bees. A wild area
will also benefit many other insects as well. Leaving a patch of lawn can be a challenge, as we often prefer neatly trimmed grass, but if you can give up even a small patch you may well be surprised at what appears! If you have children, a summer holiday activity could be to mark out a s q u a re a n d g e t t h e m t o i d e n t i f y what plants and creatures appear as it grows wild.

The Great British Bee Count takes place every year and offers valuable information about the state of our bee populations. This summer ‘Polli:nation’ are encouraging schools and families to get involved counting pollinators in their local area. Just visit their website at www.pollination.co.uk . There is no doubt that our bees are in grave danger and need our help. Any little change you can make can contribute to ensuring that familiar summer buzzing sound remains part of our gardens for years to come.

When we meet people starting up their own businesses, particularly for the first time, we are always asked about the matters that they should be considering. Many of them are surprised, I’m not sure why, when we mention insurance, as it’s a business protection that none of us can do without . It would be easy to get carried away and insure against every eventuality, but there are some risks against which adequate insurance is an absolute must. Some of them are actually a legal requirement.
A lifeline lifeline a against gainst ffinancial inancial w wipe-out ipe-out Taake employer’s and public liability for example. Unless there is only you in the business, employer ’s liability insurance is a mandatory requirement. Very few claims under these policies are made by small businesses, but for those few who do suffer a claim, it ’s an absolute lifeline against financial wipe-out . Public liability is in the same category if you have business premises or go to work at someone else’s property. There are small business policies readily available to cover these risks as well as office contents, etc. But what about slightly more specialist cover that might be needed for your particular business? Product liability if you’re selling goods; professional indemnity if you are providing services. Without adequate cover, you are again in wipe-out territory if a claim is successfully made. Although limited liability protection is available to those trading through a company, more and more cases are being taken against individuals rather than corporate entities. Insurance can often be demanded by those providing funding to the business. The most common requirement is for there to be cover in the event of something happening to the person that makes the business tick – keyman cover as it is popularly known. And what happens if there are two of you involved in the business and something happens to one party? Does the survivor really want the estate of his or her former partner involved with the ongoing business? Almost certainly not , so should there be some form of insurance to provide a payment in these circumstances so that you can retain control of the business?
D Determine etermine w which hich o off tthese hese rrisks isks rreally eally a affect ffect yyour our ssituation ituation Most of us will take out travel insurance for our holidays, but does that cover business trips? Are our employees covered on their car insurance for using their vehicles for business? The list and questions go on and on. The key is to determine which of these risks really affect your situation and then make sure you have adequate protection in place for you and your loved ones.

M Mrr a and nd M Mrs rs G Gegg egg a and nd ttheir heir m magnificent agnificent sseven even Richard Gegg’s magnificent seven have been calling the shots on cricket fields all over Gloucestershire for many years. And there won’t be any place for opposition teams to hide any time soon as the youngest of Gegg’s children, Ewan, is only 15. It’s a remarkable cricketing family, beginning with Gegg senior, who started out with Bisley before moving to Stroud, Cheltenham and back to Bisley before joining Frocester. Now 60, the one-time prolific batsman still plays for Gloucestershire over- 60s, as well as turning out for Frocester 4ths when they need someone to make up the numbers. With the exception of his oldest son Daniel – “He only played when a team was short,” said Gegg – all the boys are passionate about cricket. If seven-a-side cricket ever caught on the Gegg gang would take some beating because Daniel, now 34, is followed by Jack , 31, Louis, 28, William, 26, Callum, 21, Angus, 19, and Ewan.
“All of them play for Frocester except Daniel,” said their proud dad. “We’re a massive cricket family. I stopped playing every week five years ago but I played with all of them when I was at Bisley. He was to spend 19 seasons with the club in his first spell there, captaining the side in the Stroud Cricket League. He was a good middle order batsman who made over 50 centuries. A desire to play at a higher level took him to Stroud in the then Western League where he captained them and where he enjoyed a bestplaced finish of fourth one year. “I loved it at Stroud and Bisley,” he said. “It was a good standard at Stroud and I also became chairman of the club.” He played with some very good players at the Western League club including Jack Russell, Mark Alleyne, former New Zealand seamer Chris Pringle and ex-Gloucester fly-half Martyn Kimber, who is now director of sport at Wycliffe College. Forest Green Rovers manager Mark Cooper
FForest orest G Green reen rready eady for for big big adventure adventure The waiting is almost over for Forest Green Rovers fans and the dream becomes reality when they play their first ever match in the Football League on Saturday 5th August. Supporters have been counting down the days since they booked their place in League Two with that never-to-beforgotten 3-1 play-off final win over Tranmere Rovers at Wembley in midMay. The celebrations continued long into the night – and in some cases the days that followed! – and boss Mark Cooper wants everyone to continue enjoying the experience now that they ’ve reached the Promised Land. “It’s really exciting for the club,” said Cooper. “Who’d have thought we’d get this far? When you consider the size of the club it’s fantastic. “Now that we’re there everybody should enjoy it – the fans, players and everyone connected with the club.” It will be a lot easier to retain the feelgood factor, of course, if Forest G re e n m a k e a g o o d s h o w i n g a t t h e h i g h e r l ev e l – s t a r t i n g w i t h B a r n e t a t home. We want to be competitive.”

His dad Terry was a top player for Leeds b a c k i n t h e 7 0 s w h e n t h e y w e re t h e best team in the land. He also played 20 times for England so Cooper junior, a decent midfielder himself in the 90s and early noughties, is a football man through and through. He played for Birmingham City, Fulham and Exeter City among many ot h e r c l u b s a n d h a s a l s o m a n a g e d i n the Football League at Peterborough, Swindon Town and Notts County. When asked how well Forest Green can do, he said: “We can have a really good season. If we could have an assault on the top seven and the playoffs that would be great. Why not?” That won’t be easy, of course. There are some big, big clubs in League Two this season, including newly relegated
Coventry City and Swindon Town. T h row i n t h e d e r by g a m e s a g a i n s t Cheltenham Town and Yeovil Town and it ’s not difficult to see why the club’s supporters are so excited by the upcoming campaign. That was a great occasion that will live long in the memory. “I want the players to remember that success so that it can give them inspiration this season.”
