B Blueberry lueberry aand nd P Plum lum CCrumble rumble P Pie ie Ingredients Ingredients For the pastry: 175g plain flour; 1 tbsp granulated sugar; 100g cold unsalted butter; 30ml plain yogurt; ½ tsp salt. For the crumble topping: 75g unsalted butter; pinch salt; 50g granulated sugar; ¾ tsp ground cinnamon; ¼ tsp ground nutmeg; 100g plain flour; 25g walnuts, chopped. For the filling: 150g blueberries; 7 plums, stones removed and roughly chopped; 75g granulated sugar. Method: M ethod: 1 To make the pastry: Stir together the flour, sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl. Cube the butter and add to the bowl, then rub it into the dry ingredients. Add the yogurt and 1 tbsp cold water and mix until it comes together. Use your hands to press it all together in the bowl. Wrap in cling film and chill for at least half an hour. 2 Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C , gas mark 4). On a lightly floured surface, roll the chilled pastry out into a circle, until roughly 30cm in diameter, then use to line a greased 20cm pie dish.
3 Prick the pastry all over with a fork . Line with baking paper and fill with baking beans. Transfer to a baking tray and blind-bake the pastry for 10 -15 minutes. Lift out the paper and beans, return the case to the oven for a further five minutes, remove and set aside but leave the oven on. 4 To make the crumble topping: In a medium-size saucepan, melt the butter and continue to heat it over a medium heat until it foams up and smells nutty. Remove from the heat and stir in the salt , sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and flour. Mix in the chopped walnuts, then put to one side. 5 To make the filling: In a large bowl, stir together the blueberries and chopped plums with the sugar and 3 tbsp of the crumble. Spoon into the pre-baked pastry case. Bake for 20 minutes, remove from the oven and cover with the rest of the crumble. Put back into the oven for a further 20 minutes. Serve with your choice of cream, custard or ice-cream.

K Keep eep uupp ttoo ddate ate media! oonn ssocial ocial m edia! Espresso Espresso M Martini artini The Espresso Martini has a fairly short history as far as cocktails go, with the drink rumoured to have been created in the 1980s by a London-based bartender, Dick Bradsell. Bradsell was asked by a young woman for a drink that would “wake me up”, so the story goes. There was a coffee machine next to where Dick served drinks and he said it was a nightmare, as “there were coffee grounds everywhere”. With vodka all the rage and coffee constantly on his mind, Bradsell decided to combine the two, naming it the Vodka Espresso. The original recipe consisted of vodka, sugar syrup, two types of coffee liqueur and freshly made espresso.

Studio 19 was the first clinic to offffer this outstanding treatment in Cheltenham and has gone from strength to strength with many amazing results and very happy clients.
What is Cryotherapy and what does it treat?
Cryopen is an advanced Cryotherapy innovation that is a fast, effective, safe and new solution for removal of skin imperfections. Procedures typically last from 5 to 30 seconds, so you can be in and out of the salon quickly, but with the assurance of the utmost client care. Cryopen emits a fine jet of Nitrous Oxide under high pressure, which allows the work to be performed at millimetre precision. This destroys the tissue by freezing the fluid, which ruptures the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. This means there will be no collateral damage to healthy tissue around the area, as it is so incredibly precise and accurate. Cosmetic procedures such as skin tags, milia and cherry anginomas are no longer being treated by Doctors on the NHS, but with Cryopen you can now have them removed in the salon!

This month, although I have been avoiding make up as much as possible, I’m going to explore the ‘wash and go’ look , which is brilliant in the summer months, and how those bright pink eyeshadows are back in – something that excites me greatly. Wash and go – is that lazy-talk for “don’t bother dressing up or making

So, give that hair a wash and leave it to naturally dry – not even using a hairdryer. No matter what the outcome is, you’ll look trendy. They are a wellloved garden visitor and one that we have perhaps taken for granted considering the crucial role they play in pollination. Species such as the bumblebee are more common and can be seen b u z z i n g a b o u t o u r g a r d e n s, w h i l s t rarer varieties, such as the Great Yellow Bumblebee, are only found on the North coast and some Scottish islands.

The insects need bee-friendly plants and by having these in your garden, be it in a border or a pot , you can help. Choose plants marked as bee friendly when visiting the garden centre and if you have a gravel or tarmac front garden/driveway, consider adding a couple of pots out front – the loss of our front gardens to car parking has taken its toll on pollinators. Another thing you can do is allow a part of your lawn to grow wild. If grass is left un-mown it ’s likely plants such as clover will grow, which are great for bees. A wild area
will also benefit many other insects as well. Leaving a patch of lawn can be a challenge, as we often prefer neatly trimmed grass, but if you can give up even a small patch you may well be surprised at what appears! If you have children, a summer holiday activity could be to mark out a s q u a re a n d g e t t h e m t o i d e n t i f y what plants and creatures appear as it grows wild.

Most people don’t want to appear like a rock star with an ego, but keeping sunglasses on while outside, even on a cloudy day, will help stop the pollen reaching your eyes. • Put Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen before it reaches the nose lining. • Purchase an electric fan. The future future ooff tthe he The former Argos Argos building building former I h a ve j u s t b e e n f o r a t o u r a ro u n d t h e f o r m e r A r g o s building in Eastgate Street , on the corner of Brunswick Road. Argos closed here in mid-May, relocating to a click and collect service at Sainsburys at Gloucester Quays, following a takeover of Argos’ parent company by the supermarket giant. They still have the store at St Oswald’s Park on the former Cattle Market. Those of us who have been in Gloucester for a long time will remember the Argos building as the Co-op department store. I recall Thursday morning shopping trips with my late grandparents including the treat of a drink and a cake at the Co-op’s café, before going to their food hall (where New Look is now), buying circular plastic milk tokens and getting Co-op stamps to go in a collector’s book (before the days of store loyalty cards).

After the Co-op closed, the building went through a short period of time as “Inshops” – a collection of shops within a shop. This was before my time as a councillor, but I remember it coming into conflict with the City Council’s ancient markets charter, which effectively gives the Council control of any markets within a certain distance of The Cross. A fire hit the building and Inshops never re-opened. Having had a good walk around the building, it’s clear that Argos were only ever using a fraction of the huge amount of space it offers. While it’s sad to see Argos go, perhaps this gives us an opportunity to make better use of it, particularly the upper floors. The building is in private ownership, so it’s up to the landlord (subject to planning) what he does with it, but I’d be interested in your thoughts. Should it be flats, student accommodation, a hotel or something else? The face of Joseph Clay, the founder of the Gloucester Cooperative Society, still adorns the building on the B r u n s w i c k R o a d s i d e. I w o n d e r w h a t h e m a k e s o f i t . I t would be good to see this building back to its former glory. Perhaps we could even get the clock fixed! @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

Make sure it’s healthy and isn’t rotting or splitting. 2 Cut the bamboo into six lengths, creating tubes by making sure each length is composed of two 6 On the base tube, you will need of the plant’s ‘sections’, with one to measure in 5cm from the end above the partition-like edge. CConsider onsider eeating ating vvegan egan For August , I’m going to encourage you to consider eating vegan. Now, before you run away in horror, let me reassure you. First, you probably already eat some vegan meals or snacks without realising it . And second, I’m not trying to convert you to becoming vegan, just to becoming more “flexitarian” and including some vegan meals in your diet – the bonus being that this will very likely open your eyes to ways of eating you’d never thought of, plus a healthier lifestyle. S o w h y a m I a d vo c a t i n g c u t t i n g down on animal products? Well, bluntly put , meat and dairy p ro d u c t i o n a r e ve r y b a d fo r t h e planet . Eating plants ourselves is a far more efficient use of resources. Then there’s processing, slaughter, refrigerated transport – all these come with a high carbon price tag. diet . I’m a big believer in i n c re m e n t a l c h a n g e t h a t c a n b e sustained, so aim for a reduction not a sudden conversion. After 10 years as an almost-vegan, I can report that there has never been an easier time to be vegan! Of course, vegetables and pulses have always been there, but there’s now chefs, recipe books and bloggers creating exciting vegan dishes, restaurants offering vegan options, and so many meat substitutes and gorgeous treats freely available to us that we used t o h a ve to m a k e a t h o m e o r h u n t d ow n i n s p e c i a l i s t s h o p s . H e r e a r e some ideas: • Try simple swaps, like dairy free m a r g a r i n e o r m i l k – t h e r e a re s o many milks available, most of which a re fo r t i f i e d s o t h e y h av e t h e vitamins and minerals found in dairy. • Don’t try to replace meat. Instead, cook vegan dishes where fruit and vegetables star. August is a great time to try it – focus on beautiful veg like salads, beans, roasted vegetables, cold soups, fruit puddings, etc. • You don’t have to be an amazing cook or have a huge spice
cupboard. Find easy vegan cookbooks, websites or blogs for ideas for simple meals. The Vegan Society website is a great place to start, and I swear by Julie Montagu’s ‘Superfoods Superfast’, where all the re c i p e s t a k e l e s s t h a n 2 0 m i n u te s . Unless you’re really confident, avoid American cookbooks with strange ingredients and measures! • Find vegan groups on social media for great ideas. • Be realistic and happy with your l i m i t s . T h o u g h I b u y ve g a n s h o e s when I can and would never buy a leather bag or belt, I have a couple of pairs of good quality leather shoes that I need because I walk a lot, and I don’t beat myself up for that. • Seek out vegan treats like coconut yoghurt or choc ices, or make s o m e o n e a s t u n n i n g ve g a n chocolate cake and then enjoy their expression when you tell them what’s not in it! • Look for the Vegan Society and Vegetarian Society label on products. • Check out the Cheltenham Vegan Fair at Cheltenham Town Hall on Saturday 26th August for ideas, information, treats and gifts. See you there!

Protecting Protecting yyourself ourself When we meet people starting up their own businesses, particularly for the first time, we are always asked about the matters that they should be considering. Many of them are surprised, I’m not sure why, when we mention insurance, as it’s a business protection that none of us can do without . It would be easy to get carried away and insure against every eventuality, but there are some risks against which adequate insurance is an absolute must. Some of them are actually a legal requirement.
A lifeline lifeline a against gainst ffinancial inancial w wipe-out ipe-out Taake employer’s and public liability for example. Unless there is only you in the business, employer ’s liability insurance is a mandatory requirement. Very few claims under these policies are made by small businesses, but for those few who do suffer a claim, it ’s an absolute lifeline against financial wipe-out . Public liability is in the same category if you have business premises or go to work at someone else’s property. There are small business policies readily available to cover these risks as well as office contents, etc. But what about slightly more specialist cover that might be needed for your particular business? Product liability if you’re selling goods; professional indemnity if you are providing services. Without adequate cover, you are again in wipe-out territory if a claim is successfully made. Although limited liability protection is available to those trading through a company, more and more cases are being taken against individuals rather than corporate entities. Insurance can often be demanded by those providing funding to the business. The most common requirement is for there to be cover in the event of something happening to the person that makes the business tick – keyman cover as it is popularly known. And what happens if there are two of you involved in the business and something happens to one party? Does the survivor really want the estate of his or her former partner involved with the ongoing business? Almost certainly not , so should there be some form of insurance to provide a payment in these circumstances so that you can retain control of the business?
D Determine etermine w which hich o off tthese hese rrisks isks rreally eally a affect ffect yyour our ssituation ituation Most of us will take out travel insurance for our holidays, but does that cover business trips? Are our employees covered on their car insurance for using their vehicles for business? The list and questions go on and on. The key is to determine which of these risks really affect your situation and then make sure you have adequate protection in place for you and your loved ones.

Gloucester Gloucester CCity ity e enjoying njoying feelgood feelgood factor factor New division, new ground and new levels of optimism at Gloucester City ahead of the new season. Okay, so the new division is a sideways move from National League North to South and their new ‘home’ is at Evesham United, but there is a real sense that the feelgood factor is back at the club. An excellent top 10 finish in the last campaign was just the start and the sun has continued to shine on the club over the summer. The addition of two new directors on the board – established business people Rod Jenner and Wendy Edwards – was followed by the sight of the bulldozers moving in on the club’s Meadow Park ground. “Yes, it is exciting that local businesses want to be part of Gloucester City Football Club,” said manager Tim Harris. “The calibre of the people who have come on board and want to create a legacy is music to my ears.”

And Harris was just as happy to see the workmen at the club’s ground in Horton Road – the ground which is just a long goalkick from the fashionable Docks area in the city, but which the club have not been able to use since the devastating floods of 2007. Harris remains optimistic that the club could move back home early in the 2018/19 season and he said of the activity at Meadow Park : “In the captain at Tewkesbury Park Golf Club at the start of the year.
