John D John Daly aly or or A Arnold rnold P Palmer almer A John Daly is an alcoholic cocktail made with lemonade, iced tea and vodka, which is based on the non-alcoholic Arnold Palmer consisting of iced tea and lemonade. Both drinks are named after professional golfers – the John Daly name is a tongue-in-cheek comment referring to Daly ’s problems with alcoholism. According to the American golfer, Arnold Palmer regularly enjoyed drinking iced tea with lemonade at home. At the 1960 US Open at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colorado, he ordered this drink at the bar. A woman sitting nearby overheard him and ordered “that Palmer drink”, hence its name. The drink is also referred to as a ‘Half and Half’ in many parts of the US, especially the South. Ingredients Ingredients (John ((JJohn Daly): Daly): 50ml vodka; 100ml lemonade; 100ml iced tea; ice; slice of lemon to garnish. Method: Method: 1 Fill a collins glass with ice. 2 Add vodka, then top up with equal parts iced tea and lemonade. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

Double Double EEspresso spresso Maserati is a magical name in Italian car culture. Founded by the Maserati Brothers on the 1st December 1914, at N° 1 Via de’ Pepoli in Bologna, the Italian marque has always produced cars that have style, class and a sporting pedigree. The Levante, named after the Mediterranean wind, has a mix that is new for Maserati; luxurious, but also a d ve n t u r o u s . Luxury Luxury lleather eather ffits its iin nw with ith tthe he Italian Italian b bespoke espoke ffeel eel The model Maserati loaned me was sporting a very striking Blu Emozione paint colour, which suited the lines of the Levante so well. Inside it had the luxury leather you expect from an
Italian sports car, in the colour of Cuoio. It ’s the sort of tobacco colour that suits Italian car interiors so well. The trim had been finished with High Gloss Ebano Wood that had a beautiful grain – just think of the wo o d f i n i s h yo u m i g h t s e e o n a vintage Riva Boat and you are in that territory. It felt so luxurious and fitted in with the Italian bespoke feel. It was reassuring to see the traditional Maserati clock in place, the iconic oval, proudly sporting the Maserati Trident logo. The Silver Trident also features at the heart of the perfectly shaped steering wheel and displays on the Touch Control 8.4” media screen. The driving position in
the Levante feels like you are in a Maserati sports car and not a Sports Utility Vehicle. The 3.0 litre V6 Turbo D i e s e l p o we r p l a n t ( w i t h 2 7 5 b h p ) started with a press of the stop/start button, and the automatic box can be driven normally or, when you are after a more sporty experience, you can use the shift paddles. The handling of the Maserati was sublime due to a low centre of gravity and perfect 50 -50 weight distribution.
Advanced A dvanced ssafety afety ffeatures eatures The Levante also has advanced safety features – reassuring for the family driver – including six dual-stage airbags, active headrests and a tyre pressure monitoring system, as well as optional ‘active’ safety technology designed to help prevent collisions. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Alert , Rear Cross Path d e te c t i o n , a n d L a n e D e p a r t u r e a n d Forward Collision warning systems. For someone who wants Italian elegance, a bespoke feel and a capable vehicle for many situations, the new Maserati Levante is a perfect choice. Like all good love stories, it was a slow burner with Simon Overthrow’s passion for golf only really taking hold this century once he’d hung up his football boots. Now the captain of Painswick Golf Club, the 50 -year-old spends much of his time at a course which has become his second home since he stopped playing football 14 years ago. He can remember how he first became interested in golf like it was yesterday. “We went to this auction in Leicester when I was 12, 13 or 14,” he said. “I remember seeing this set o f g o l f c l u b s a n d te l l i n g m y d a d I wanted them and fair play to him, he got them for me.” Up until then Overthrow, who was born in Leicester but moved to Gloucester at the age of two or three, was like many typical sports mad youngsters of that time, playing

football and rugby in the winter and cricket in the summer. “I was aware of golf,” said Overthrow. “I remember watching the Open on television and watching Tom Watson winning the Open at Royal Troon in 1982 and again in 1983 at Royal Birkdale. He was my first favourite player, along with Nick Faldo and his three Masters wins. “These captured my imagination and interest as well and I became a bit of a statistical anorak on golf literature from then on.” He’s pleased that he did because
his son Kenny, 23, caught the golfing bug at the age of six . “He always had good hand-eye coordination,” said Overthrow senior, who plays off 11. “When he started, he was having lessons at Gloucester Golf Club on Sunday mornings. “It wasn’t until he was 12 that he joined Painswick . He won his first tournament at Gloucester when he was 14 and won the club championship at Painswick at 16.” Kenny, who now lives in the US and plays off scratch, was soon m a k i n g a n a m e fo r h i m s e l f o n t h e Gloucestershire golf circuit and played for the county under-14s, 16s and 18s. We play cricket so that everyone gets to bat or bowl, although we do try to win.” Typically, Withey is equally dismissive of his ability as a player. “I used to play for Woodchester in m y 2 0 s, ” h e s a i d . “ T h e n I s t o p p e d

H How ow to to cconserve onserve w water ater About one third of the water each p e r s o n u s es o n a d a i l y b a s i s i s wasted – it goes straight down the plug hole. That ’s a lot of water – about 50 litres each, per day. But is there any point in saving water? After all, we’re never going to run out of it. Well, yes actually. Every drop of water leaving your tap has been treated at a water treatment plant – a complicated process that turns “grey water” into the useable, drinkable, clean, safe water we all take for granted. Hot water is doubly energy-intensive, as you’ve produced carbon in heating it.
N Nearly early a all ll tthe he w world’s orld’s w water ater is is u undrinkable ndrinkable These processes use a lot of energy – for the water used by the average family in a year, it’s about the same as a return flight to New York , according to research by Waterwise. A n d t h e re m i g h t n o t b e a s m u c h water around as you think . Nearly all the world’s water is undrinkable, without only about 1% suitable and available for our use, and there is increasing pressure on that 1% supply. So, what’s the best way to conserve water? In no particular order, here are some tips. • In your garden, water in the early morning and evening to reduce

water flushed away – or you can buy one, the Hippo Water Saver. • Fit a water butt – or better still, several – to make the most of those downpours by collecting water from your house or shed roof. • Think about saving water in the kitchen – steaming veg instead of boiling it, for instance, and not filling up the washing up bowl for just a few glasses. • Turn the tap off when you brush your teeth. If everyone in the UK who leaves the tap running turned it off, we’d save enough to supply 2.9 million people for one day. • Only run a dishwasher or washing machine when full. When replacing your dishwasher, washing machine or loo, look for water efficient models. Check out Waterwise’s website for award-winning white goods. • Get a water meter. You’ll have a financial incentive to follow all these other tips!

Money Money M Matters atters with with Roger Roger D Downes ownes o of fA Andorran ndorr ran
W Working orking iin n tthe he g gig ig economy economy For many years, entrepreneurs who wanted to run their own business started up a self-employment and began the risky business of not knowing where their next pay cheque was going to come from. In exchange for taking those risks, entrepreneurs enjoyed tax breaks not available to those in employment . Whilst on the one hand you may not make enough to live off, there is often no real ceiling to how much you can earn. People joined the self-employed ranks in an effort to earn more money. Since then, entrepreneurs have become more sophisticated, often trading through limited companies and widening the tax planning opportunities that such a structure brings. It hasn’t been all plain sailing though, with the amount of red tape introduced, particularly since we have been part of the EU, often strangling the entrepreneurial spirit. More recently, the tax benefits have become the driver for ‘ e n t re p re n e u r s ’ s t a r t i n g u p i n b u s i n e ss a n d i t h a s s e e n a proliferation of people registering as self-employed or forming their own companies. Those decisions were made by the individuals themselves, who have enjoyed the tax savings they sought for a generation or more. The government has begun a fight back against what it sees as a loss of tax revenue amongst the community of the selfemployed and those running personal service companies.
Ag group roup o off p people eople d doing oing llow-paid ow-paid w work ork o on nap piecemeal iecemeal b basis asis Recent legislation restricting the tax benefits of ‘off payroll workers’ and those drawing dividends from their companies has made these structures less attractive, some would argue for the better. I take issue with that, as these entrepreneurs employ millions of people nationwide, which would not be the case if there were no incentives for them taking the risk of obtaining the business levels that they need. T h e l a t e s t g ro u p o f p e o p l e i n v o l v e d i n t h i s d e b a t e a re those working in what has become known as the ‘gig economy’. There is no dictionary definition, but the term is generally applied to the group of people who are doing lowpaid work on a piecemeal basis, often through a website or app. Uber and Deliveroo are just two of the household names using workers in this way. The gig economy has grown rapidly in recent years and estimates suggest that there are over 1.5 million already in this community. There is a key difference here, however. The workers haven’t generally made the decision to operate in this way; Uber and Deliveroo insist that it’s the only way in which they will do business. There have been high profile challenges to these arrangements and it’s a subject that we will hear more of over the next couple of years whilst the government and the courts try to determine what’s right and wrong.
