The summer holidays are fast approaching and parents will be racking their brains for activities to do with their children. As always, we have a great selection of events in our What’s On section, but Roberta Smart thinks mum and dad should also embrace their inner child and get arty with the kids. Read her creative suggestions in ‘Parenting & Guardianship’. Café René will once again be flying the R&B flag for the 2017 Gloucester Rhythm & Blues Festival, which starts on Monday 24th July. With toe-tapping music, a hog roast and BBQ, and a great selection of Real Ales, Ciders and Perrys, this is an event you won’t want to miss! We’re once again on the look out for writers to cover a variety of topics within the magazine. Have a look inside and get in touch if you’re interested in any of the features.

John John D Daly aly or or Arnold A rnold Palmer Palmer A John Daly is an alcoholic cocktail made with lemonade, iced tea and vodka, which is based on the non-alcoholic Arnold Palmer consisting of iced tea and lemonade. Both drinks are named after professional golfers – the John Daly name is a tongue-in-cheek comment referring to Daly ’s problems with alcoholism. According to the American golfer, Arnold Palmer regularly enjoyed drinking iced tea with lemonade at home. At the 1960 US Open at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colorado, he ordered this drink at the bar. A woman sitting nearby overheard him and ordered “that Palmer drink”, hence its name. The drink is also referred to as a ‘Half and Half’ in many parts of the US, especially the South. Ingredients Ingredients (John ((JJohn Daly): Daly): 50ml vodka; 100ml lemonade; 100ml iced tea; ice; slice of lemon to garnish. Method: Method: 1 Fill a collins glass with ice. 2 Add vodka, then top up with equal parts iced tea and lemonade. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

FFiord iord ffocus ocus Last time The Local Answer took you to Norway on a round trip with Hurtigruten’s coastal steamer. This time, we focus on a two-centre flydrive to Ålesund and Geiranger. We flew Norwegian, collected the car at Ålesund airport and drove, after navigating spiralling underwater tunnels to the mainland, straight to our self-catering base at at Geiranger on the UNESCO Geirangerfiord. It ’s a gentle, well-signed, two-and-a-half hour drive via Stordal and the Eidsdal ferry. The stunning scenery just gets more impressive by the minute.
Hytteutleige og Camping. It ’s a beautifully located complex of simple, but comfortable chalets and camping places. It’s a perfect base for exploring – or just relaxing, fishing for supper in t h e f i o rd , o r h i r i n g a m o to r b o a t o r Geiranger G eiranger iiss p perfect erfect kayak for excursions under the ffor or exploring exploring majestic waterfalls that tumble into Journey ’s end is Geiranger, at the the blue-green water. fo o t o f t h e p re c i p i to u s Ø r n ev e g e n Drive D rive o over ver the the (Eagle Road) with its iconic views of sswitchback witchback TTrollstigen rollstigen anchored cruise ships in the narrow fiord end. We spent a week at the We’d recommend trips to nearby Grande Geiranger (best avoided when cruise well-rated, family-run
ships are in!), Flydalsjuvet viewpoint or Storseterfossen waterfall. Make s u r e to d r i v e ov e r t h e s w i t c h b a c k Trollstigen (Troll’s stairs) to Åndalsnes too. And if you think you recognise locations from the movie Ex Machina, you’re correct . The film’s high-tech house is Valldalen’s Juvet Landscape Hotel – also visited by The Hairy Bikers on their trip to Norway – on the southern approach to the Trollstigen. Other excursions include Stryn and Briksdals, under the Briksdal glacier, or to Bakeriet I Lom (arguably Norway’s b e s t a n d a l s o v i s i t e d by t h e H a i r y Bikers) in Fossbergom, for delicious Skillingsboller. Don’t miss the village’s magnificent stave church either.
A Art rt N Nouveau ouveau Å Ålesund lesund As mentioned earlier,, pretty Ålesund is worth visiting at the start or finish of your trip. Highlights include its Art Nouveau architecture and m u s e u m , a q u a r i u m a n d v i ew s f ro m Mount Aksla. D Determination etermination a and nd ccommunity ommunity sspirit pirit It was a tough and traumatic time for many people, p a r t i c u l a r l y t h o s e w h o s e h o m e s we r e f l o o d e d a n d their possessions ruined. A silver lining was the great determination and community spirit that saw us through it – and the huge number of volunteers and organisations that, often literally, waded in to help. It’s right that we mark this anniversary, but that we do so in a sensitive way, given that the memories will still be painful for many people. A Cathedral Service has been organised for 5.30pm on Tuesday 25th July. Gloucester ’s Carnival, which had to be postponed because of the floods in 2007, takes place on 22nd July and will feature some key figures from the events of a decade ago, as well as some fire service appliances that were used at the time.

TThere here h have ave b been een h huge uge iinvestments nvestments iin n fflood lood a alleviation lleviation m measures easures And we will be publishing a report outlining what has been done since 2007 to guard against a recurrence. The City Council, County Council, Severn Trent and the Environment Agency have all invested huge sums of money in flood alleviation measures, from small schemes on brooks and streams to the £1.5 million flood storage area for the Horsbere Brook and multi-million pound investment in new sewers. That investment is still ongoing. Some people might claim that a complacency about the risk of flooding existed before 2007, and there may be some truth to that, but it certainly doesn’t exist now. So let’s mark , in a respectful way, the anniversary of that terrible event and resolve to continue doing all we can to stop it happening again. @cllrpauljames @cllrpauljames

Founded by the Maserati Brothers on the 1st December 1914, at N° 1 Via de’ Pepoli in Bologna, the Italian marque has always produced cars that have style, class and a sporting pedigree. It costs very little to stock u p o n p a p e r a n d p a i n t , a n d I h av e searched for some unique and inspiring art play to share with kids of all ages. These days the 50 -year-old is putting plenty back into the sport he loves by coaching the senior women’ss team at Gloucester Rowing Club and is enjoying every minute of it. Woods first got involved in rowing in the mid-1980s when he was a pupil at Monmouth School and it has been part of his life ever since. It helped that he was pretty good at it – national titles in 2008 in the coxless fours at the Metropolitan Regatta at Dorney Lake and at Marlow a few weeks later being obvious highlights. “Yes, I won a few things nationally,” he said modestly. “It ’s been great for me. One O ne of of G Gloucester’s loucester’s greatest greatest Mike Burton was a colossus b field and he h has on the rugby been a colossus off it since retiring from playing almost 40 years ago. The one-time Gloucester, England and British Lions prop is a hugely successful businessman and continues to b e a b i g n o i s e i n r u g b y where he is heavily involved with the Barbarians. The Maidenhead-born Burton’s rugby journey began when he left Berkshire at the a g e o f 1 2 to m ov e to Gloucester and so began a love affair that endures to this day. “I just enjoyed playing sport s o w h e n I m ov e d t o Gloucester, rugby seemed like a natural thing to get involved in,” he said. And he was certainly in the ideal location, living in Longlevens little more than a long Micky Booth pass from Kingsholm. M i n d y o u , h e h a d a few teething problems at the start of his rugby life at Longlevens Secondary Modern, which is 400 yards from L o n g l e v e n s R u g by C l u b i n L o n g f o r d L a n e a n d a m i l e a s t h e c r ow f l i e s from Kingsholm. “ I re m e m b e r l o o k i n g a t i t a n d thinking , ‘I want to be a number 1 0 ’ , ” B u r to n s a i d . “ S o I to l d m y schoolteacher Dennis Williams and h e s a i d , ‘ B u r t o n , yo u ’ l l b e a p r o p when you start and you’ll be a prop when you finish’ and he chucked me the number 3 shirt .” It was a decision Burton has never r e g re t te d a n d h e a d d e d : “ I j u s t wanted to be in a team. It was the social aspect that appealed to me, being part of something.” While the young Burton was soon enjoying himself off the field, he was making great strides on the field as well. By the age of 15 he was playing for Longlevens 4ths and within months he had been catapulted into the 1st XV, still a few weeks short of his 16th birthday. “ T h e m a t c h e s we re h a r d , ” s a i d Burton. “I was still very young and

I was playing in the front row.” It may have been a hard school but Burton was a quick learner and he was soon picking up his first winner’s medal in a Longlevens shirt . “It was the North Gloucestershire Combination 2nd XV Cup,” he said proudly. “I can’t remember the score but we beat Tredworth in the final at Kingsholm. I’ve still got the medal to this day.”
Gloucester Gloucester w were ere renowned renowned for for their their sstrong trong p pack ack Such was Burton’s progress that he was never going to remain at Longlevens for long, and by the age of 18 he was in the Gloucester team and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kingsholm greats Jack Fowke and Peter Ford. Those were the days when Gloucester were renowned all over the country for having a formidable pack and it was something that Burton was only too pleased to buy into. “The underlying principle was that any team that played us always had respect for our forwards,” he
said. “We had our own style, although it was never defined as such. “We had a powerful pack , two centres who could tackle – I played my whole career w i t h J o h n B ay l i s s a t i n s i d e centre – and a goalkicker.” Burton, of course, played in an era before leagues were introduced but he was a key member of the teams that wo n cu p finals at Twickenham in 1972 and 1978. “We worked very hard at our game,” said Burton, who c a p t a i n e d t h e c l u b fo r o n e season in 1975. “We used to play every Wednesday and Saturday. On a Wednesday we’d be in Pontypool playing the British Lions front row, and then on a Saturday we’d play Harlequins who all spoke as if they ’d got plums in their mouths! “ A n d i n b e t we e n t h e s e games we’d all go to work too. I’m very proud of everything that we achieved.” It was around this time that Burton first came to the notice of the England selectors and he would go on to play 28 times for his country, including 17 Tests. He was also a member of Willie John McBride’s British Lions Invincibles squad that toured South Africa in 1974. Burton describes the t o u r a s a n “ u n fo rg e t t a b l e l i f e changing ex-perience”. “To be an original selection on a Lions tour meant everything to me,” h e s a i d . “ I n 7 4 we o n l y t o o k 3 0 players so it meant you had to be one of the best four props in Great Britain. “It was a real 30 -man effort to win the series. H How ow to to cconserve onserve w water ater About one third of the water each p e r s o n u s es o n a d a i l y b a s i s i s wasted – it goes straight down the plug hole. That ’s a lot of water – about 50 litres each, per day. But is there any point in saving water? After all, we’re never going to run out of it. Well, yes actually. Every drop of water leaving your tap has been treated at a water treatment plant – a complicated process that turns “grey water” into the useable, drinkable, clean, safe water we all take for granted. Hot water is doubly energy-intensive, as you’ve produced carbon in heating it.
N Nearly early a all ll tthe he w world’s orld’s w water ater is is u undrinkable ndrinkable These processes use a lot of energy – for the water used by the average family in a year, it’s about the same as a return flight to New York , according to research by Waterwise. A n d t h e re m i g h t n o t b e a s m u c h water around as you think . Nearly all the world’s water is undrinkable, without only about 1% suitable and available for our use, and there is increasing pressure on that 1% supply. So, what’s the best way to conserve water? In no particular order, here are some tips. • In your garden, water in the early morning and evening to reduce

evaporation, use a can, not a hose, and direct it at the base of the plant. When buying new plants, think about what will work in the conditions you h a v e . I f y o u h a ve a d r y s u n - b a k e d g a rd e n , g e t p l a n t s t h a t t h r i ve i n those conditions, not ones needing constant watering. • 63% of our water use at home is i n t h e b a t h ro o m . G e t d r i p p i n g t a p s fixed pronto, and save the long showers for an occasional treat. • I f t h e h ot t a p i n yo u r s i n k , b a t h o r s h owe r t a k e s a while to heat up, have a jug or bucket to h a n d to f i l l u p while you’re waiting, and use the water on the garden. • Contact your water company for an inflatable device to put in your toilet cistern to reduce the
water flushed away – or you can buy one, the Hippo Water Saver. • Fit a water butt – or better still, several – to make the most of those downpours by collecting water from your house or shed roof. • Think about saving water in the kitchen – steaming veg instead of boiling it, for instance, and not filling up the washing up bowl for just a few glasses. • Turn the tap off when you brush your teeth. If everyone in the UK who leaves the tap running turned it off, we’d save enough to supply 2.9 million people for one day. • Only run a dishwasher or washing machine when full. When replacing your dishwasher, washing machine or loo, look for water efficient models. Check out Waterwise’s website for award-winning white goods. • Get a water meter. You’ll have a financial incentive to follow all these other tips!

W Working orking iin n tthe he g gig ig economy economy For many years, entrepreneurs who wanted to run their own business started up a self-employment and began the risky business of not knowing where their next pay cheque was going to come from. In exchange for taking those risks, entrepreneurs enjoyed tax breaks not available to those in employment . Whilst on the one hand you may not make enough to live off, there is often no real ceiling to how much you can earn. People joined the self-employed ranks in an effort to earn more money. Since then, entrepreneurs have become more sophisticated, often trading through limited companies and widening the tax planning opportunities that such a structure brings. It hasn’t been all plain sailing though, with the amount of red tape introduced, particularly since we have been part of the EU, often strangling the entrepreneurial spirit. More recently, the tax benefits have become the driver for ‘ e n t re p re n e u r s ’ s t a r t i n g u p i n b u s i n e ss a n d i t h a s s e e n a proliferation of people registering as self-employed or forming their own companies. Those decisions were made by the individuals themselves, who have enjoyed the tax savings they sought for a generation or more. The government has begun a fight back against what it sees as a loss of tax revenue amongst the community of the selfemployed and those running personal service companies.
Ag group roup o off p people eople d doing oing llow-paid ow-paid w work ork o on nap piecemeal iecemeal b basis asis Recent legislation restricting the tax benefits of ‘off payroll workers’ and those drawing dividends from their companies has made these structures less attractive, some would argue for the better. I take issue with that, as these entrepreneurs employ millions of people nationwide, which would not be the case if there were no incentives for them taking the risk of obtaining the business levels that they need. T h e l a t e s t g ro u p o f p e o p l e i n v o l v e d i n t h i s d e b a t e a re those working in what has become known as the ‘gig economy’. There is no dictionary definition, but the term is generally applied to the group of people who are doing lowpaid work on a piecemeal basis, often through a website or app. Uber and Deliveroo are just two of the household names using workers in this way. The gig economy has grown rapidly in recent years and estimates suggest that there are over 1.5 million already in this community. There is a key difference here, however. The workers haven’t generally made the decision to operate in this way; Uber and Deliveroo insist that it’s the only way in which they will do business. There have been high profile challenges to these arrangements and it’s a subject that we will hear more of over the next couple of years whilst the government and the courts try to determine what’s right and wrong.
