Welcome Welcome ttoo June June ... ... We’ve got not one, but three recipes for you this month as we prepare for Father’s Day. Treat your dad and have a go at making our fantastic fudge – milk chocolate, dark chocolate and a very tasty white chocolate and cranberry. You could even experiment with other flavours, too! Young readers please recruit the help of an adult for the cooking process. ‘Pick Your Own’ season returns to Primrose Vale and it’s a fantastic way to entertain the children and encourage them to eat healthily. Take advantage of the two vouchers inside for discounts on fruit and vegetables. Patesians Sports & Social Club have once again donated a fantastic Hospitality Package for two people to attend the Cheltenham Cricket Festival in July. For more details including how to enter our competition, see page 39. After the popularity of our Rugby World Cup 2015 and UEFA Euro 2016 fixtures lists, we’ve put together a feature for The British & Irish Lions Tour 2017. See inside for a brief write-up and match dates.

Mai Mai TTai ai If you’re looking for a cocktail to whisk you away to a tropical paradise, the Mai Tai is the drink for you. This cocktail was supposedly invented in 1944 at Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, California. He created the drink one afternoon for friends who were visiting from Tahiti. Carrie Guild – one of Vic’s guests – tasted the cocktail and exclaimed “Maita’i roa ae”, which is translated literally as “very good” or figuratively as “out of this world! The best!” Don the Beachcomber – Trader Vic’s rival – claimed creation of the cocktail in 1933 at his then-new bar named after himself (later a famous restaurant) in Hollywood. His recipe is more complicated than that of Vic’s and has a very different taste. Ingredients: 50ml dark rum; 15ml orange curacao; Ingredients: 10ml fresh lime juice; 60ml almond syrup; ice; wedge of lime and a chunk of pineapple to garnish. Method: Method: 1 Put the ice in a cocktail shaker and add rum, orange curacao, lime juice and almond syrup. 2 Shake well and strain the drink into a tall glass with fresh ice. 3 Garnish with a wedge of lime and a chunk of pineapple.

Thyme Thyme tto oe explore xplore The whole point of foraging, at least in my opinion, isn’t simply to cut down on the cost of your monthly food bill. The time and effort required to get a full and varied diet from foraging is extensive and wouldn’t leave a lot of room in your life for other pursuits. I feel that the point of foraging is to teach yourself to notice more while out in the country. So often in this fast paced, instant gratification lifestyle w e h a ve b u i l t fo r o u r s e l ve s , we ove r l o o k a n d t a k e fo r granted certain things that were once viewed as an important lifeline for our ancestors. When walking off your Sunday lunch, how often do you look up and notice the seasons’ effects on hedgerows and undergrowth? Perhaps you prefer to gaze downward noticing nothing more than the same well trodden path that you saw last weekend?

rights, ffor Summer Summer b brights, or ssummer ummer n ights… nights… It ’s time to up your game for summer ’17. Whether you’re a fan or not , there’s no denying the eye catching impact a splash of colour has on your appearance. A statement colour is the easiest way to go from fresh faced to fierce. Welcome to the season of colour confidence! If you’re not confident with it just yet , it ’s time to get acquainted with colour. In a world that can be bleak at the best of times, embrace the chance to p l ay w i t h a n ew fo u n d s e n s e o f freedom using this season’s trends. So what are we working with here? Let ’s overview the top trends we’ll all be experimenting with this summer…
the summer, this is an essential look . Dolce & Gabbana have brought back t h e f l ow e r c r ow n s – t o p m a r k s fo r timing – and have paired them with a coral lip to give serious festival beauty goals. Holographic glitter along the eyebrows, creating a highlined brow, will also be big at festivals this year. Disco eyes, framed by holographic brows and topped off with a coral lip and floral crown will guarantee you the ultimate flowerpower royalty status!

Choosing a new hobby is hard. There are probably a hundred different things on the edge of your radar that you keep telling yourself you’ll look into at some point. Maybe you’ll buy a book , or join a local class. Or maybe you will buy a book from Amazon and when it finally arrives you’ll proudly add it to a book shelf, never finding the time to pick it up again. Or you’ll carefully fold up that leaflet about evening classes you picked up and put it in your handbag, next to reappear (and destined for the bin) when you’re chucking out all those old receipts. ‘How TTo… o… Thursdays’ Thursdays’ Luckily there is another way! ‘How are a series of free informal talks on the subjects you’ve always wondered about. Introductory and accessible to absolutely anyone, we’ll present you with all the information you need and then leave you to take it wherever you want. The series runs all the way through to September, and this month you can learn ‘How ‘How To… To… Receive Receive Spiritual Spiritual Guidance’ (and how you don’t have to be gifted or Guidance’ connected to some higher power to get it!) on 8th 8th JJune une and ‘How ‘How To… To… D o TThe he Shimmy’ Shimmy’ (one of the most fun Do belly dance moves) on 22nd 22nd June June.

SSummer ummer h has as aarrived! rrived! Winter is well behind us and thoughts c a n n ow t u r n to a l l t h e w o n d e r f u l events we might be lucky enough to attend this summer. The main concern is, of course, what to wear.
W Weddings eddings Weddings are often planned months, if not years, in advance, and the average cost for the event is said to be upwards of £20,000 – certainly a very expensive day where you want everything to be fabulous and, of course, memorable. T h e b r i d a l g ow n i s t h e m a i n fo c u s and the choice can be overwhelming – s p e c i a l i s t d e s i g n e r s, b o u t i q u e s, a n d n ow m a n y h i g h s t r e e t s h o p s a r e getting in on this lucrative market. The high street has really come up trumps fo r t h o s e o n a m o r e r e s t r i c te d budget – the choice is very impressive and reasonably priced. Many dresses can easily be used again after the big day, and there is usually something for everyone, including good bridesmaid selections. High end dresses are tailored to your s p e c i f i c re q u i re m e n t s a n d v e r y personal. you think you want , but in twenty years time when you fondly look back at the pictures from your special day, wo u l d yo u s t i l l c h o o s e t h i s l o o k ? I think we can all agree on one thing – K a te M i d d l e to n g o t i t j u s t r i g h t w i t h h e r c l a s s i c g ow n , a n d i t w i l l n e v e r really date. Our present Queen’s gown made all those years ago is also still a classic. Grooms must not in any way be overlooked – it is their big day as well. They must be confident in their choice and not be forced to wear an outfit that doesn’t suit them. Of course, this is not to say anything goes, but again when dressed well, people feel good. Bridal shoes must be comfortable, as you will be wearing them for several hours. Try wearing them for an hour or so around the house a few times before the wedding to break them in. This goes for the groom also – pinched feet mean a pinched face!
Races Races A day at the races has now become a fashion statement, often eclipsing the real stars of the show – the horses! Fashionable race goers get lots of press coverage and the ladies really do go all out . Royal Ascot have certainly tightened their dress rules over the last two years, as this highlight of the social season was beginning to resemble a hen night or stag do! So be aware – if you are lucky enough to go to the Royal Enclosure, the dress code must be adhered to. Ladies must wear formal daywear with dresses of ‘modest’ length (just a b o ve t h e k n e e o r l o n g e r ) , a n d dresses and tops must have straps of one inch or wider. Trouser suits are welcome but should be of matching material and colour. Midriffs must be covered – no six packs on show here! Fascinators are no longer permitted but this is a hard rule to ‘police’. I have certainly seen versions of fascinators that cover the crown and are more like hats.
Hats can make or break our lovely outfits, and on ladies day they can be quite outrageous. Those of us who are i n v e s t i n g i n t h i s i m p o r t a n t i te m c a n s p e n d a fo r t u n e o n a d e s i g n e r h a t , and milliners are becoming more popular, as clients want a bespoke hat. A t o n e t i m e Lo n d o n h a d t h e m o n o p o l y – n ow b e s p o k e m i l l i n e r s such as Willow and Lace in our corner of the world can certainly compete, and very often they out-do our well known designers. Better still, they ’re sold at a fraction of the price! For the men attending the Royal Enclosure, black or grey morning dress is required, including a waistcoat and tie, black or grey top hat , and plain black shoes. Bow ties and cravats are not permitted. All in all, it ’s quite a minefield to enter the Royal Enclosure. These rules are more relaxed in other areas of the Royal Ascot meeting, and other racing venues.
Garden Garden p parties arties Garden parties are generally not as formal as Royal Ascot, depending on w h i c h o n e yo u a re l u c k y e n o u g h to attend. It is always worth checking the dress code in advance, as that way you can relax and enjoy the party! Have a great summer season and, importantly, have fun with whatever clothes you choose.

Every year as the weather warms up, dog owners start to nervously worry that they might come across an adder on a walk . The adder (vipera berus) is the only native, ve n o m o u s s n a k e i n Britain and is responsible for many rushed trips to t h e ve t w h e n c u r i o u s dogs get a bit too close to this otherwise timid and non-aggressive snake. Most adder bites occur between April and July, and more often in the afternoon of warm, sunny days when the snakes are most active. This year we have had a spate of dogs coming in with adder bites, and other vet clinics have reported an increase in cases this year.
M Most ost b bites ites ttend end tto ob be eo on n tthe he m muzzle uzzle or or end end o off a llimb imb Nearly all dogs bitten by snakes will develop local signs at the site of an adder bite and most bites tend to be on the muzzle or end of a limb. Swelling and oedema usually occurs within minutes to two hours after the bite. The poison from an adder bite can also cause internal/systemic signs such as fever, lethargy, drooling, nausea and weakness. In rare circumstances the internal reaction can be serious enough to cause shock , organ damage, heart rhythm disorders, seizures and very occasionally death. Fortunately, the majority of the time the symptoms, while serious, are usually not life-threatening and respond quickly to treatment . In those rare occasions where an animal is critically unwell, an anti-venom can be administered.

If your dog is bitten by a snake, keep calm, try to keep your dog quiet, get to your local vet as quickly as possible and be reassured that the vast majority of dogs that get bitten by adders recover completely with prompt veterinary attention. Despite the fact that we have seen four cases in the last m o n t h ( s o m e t i m e s t h a t i s a l l w e s e e f o r t h e e n t i re season), all affected dogs have survived and are doing well. Early season bites sometimes produce the worse symptoms, as adders have their biggest supply of venom stored up after a period of hibernation and not feeding. Hopefully the number of bites will now decrease, but be vigilant when walking over the local hills. I’m always grateful that the adder bite symptoms are relatively mild compared to the Tiger and Brown snake bites I used to see regularly in Australia!

H o w a re yo u s u p p o s e d t o keep all those balls in the air? Family life can sometimes be a real juggling act , so what makes family life easier and happier for all? ‘Structure’ and ‘discipline’ are the unlikely magic words of success. Whether you are renovating the house, studying for exams or raising a baby, these two words will guide you towards peace of mind and achieving your ambitions. Sound scary? Do you much prefer the words ‘freedom’ or maybe ‘self-guided’? Well, here’s the low down. In the formative years (1-7) a mixture of structure and discipline creates self reliance and self worth, an understanding of tasks and rewards are seeded, and the child learns that they can create their own outcome, which is priceless.
LLead ead b by ye example xample In the teen years, a mixture of structure (planning) and self discipline (homework and revision) creates exam success and builds confidence. We all know the chaos resulting from lack of preparation and missing the deadline, and it never feels good. As a parent , you can help instil these two vital aspects of life into your children. Start by leading by example, then offer opportunities for them to create their own – maybe they want to learn a new skill? It takes structure (practice) and discipline (turning up to practice even when you don’t feel like it) to succeed. The Local Answer
For those caring for elderly parents and dealing with the extra pressures of d e m e n t i a – s u c h a we i g h t o f responsibility upon family life – using carefully created structures allows for time spent lovingly with our elders, as well as ensuring basic needs are met. “We are not worthy to live in a Society taking everything and giving nothing.” Lilian M Faithfull, 1907
What does ‘Lilian Faithfull Care’ mean? It means taking pride in looking after those who have already given so much. We never forget that the senior members of our society worked so hard to create our modern life and ways. It means dignity. Showing respect and adopting a person centred approach to every single resident that lives with us. It means having plenty of fully trained staff on duty. Providing support and putting up the wages of those carrying out one of the most important jobs in society.
It means providing food that is not only nutritional, but also of excellent quality and food that we would want to eat ourselves. It means putting care before profit. As a charity we own our homes and are able to run them differently to commercial operators. It means being governed by Trustees not shareholders. It means providing a safe, stable and secure home, a home for life.
Lilian Faithfull – in care for the right reasons, not for profit.

W Watchet atchet w weekend eekend We’ve previously advocated the joys of escaping down the M5 for a quick break . But you needn’t go all the way to Devon or Cornwall to enjoy a refreshing break , as we discovered recently with a spontaneous night away in Watchet’s Exmoor hinterland.
EEnjoy njoy a n nostalgic ostalgic ssteam team ttrain rain rride ide A f te r o u r S a t u r d a y m o r n i n g s t a r t from Cheltenham, it was just over an hour to Bridgwater where we headed cross-country across the gently rising Quantocks to Watchet . Parking in the Mineral Yard car park , we admired the impressive mural before walking out of town along the Washford trail. The route follows the well-surfaced course of the disused mineral railway that once brought iron ore to Watchet harbour. As you walk (or cycle), you’re never far from the restored West Somerset Railway and its whistling steam engines pulling coffee and cream carriages. We picnicked on the trail, but if you fancy pub food, you’ll reach the wellreviewed Washford Inn and White The Local Answer
H o r s e I n n a f te r a b o u t 5 0 m i n u t e s . From Washford, you can either walk back to Watchet or catch the steam train for a short , nostalgic reminder of rail travel’s bygone age.
IIdyllic dyllic W Wood ood A Advent dvent FFarm arm From Watchet station, it ’s a short stroll to the esplanade to say ‘Hi’ to Yankee Jack , admire the yachts and c h e c k o u t t h e g i f t s h o p s b e fo re heading to your accommodation. Of TripAdvisor ’s to p t h re e recommendations, we chose Wood Advent Farm (57 reviews, all fivestar) – a five-mile drive into Exmoor National Park . John and Diane’s working farm, a warm welcome, and delicious tea and cake on arrival is idyllically located down some long, very narrow lanes. We could have eaten there, but opted for the 20 minute walk to enjoy a good dinner at The Valiant Soldier in nearby Roadwater (if it’s dark , take torches). Next morning, after a great night’s sleep and Diane’s excellent breakfast, we could have (with prior arrangement) done some clay
shooting. As it was, we meandered through the lanes to Watchet and over the Quantocks. If time allows, a stop beside East Quantoxhead’s duck pond and a walk to the fossil-rich beach is rewarding. Alternatively, you could spend the day exploring Exmoor before heading back to Gloucestershire.
A gorgeous gorgeous ccorner orner o off SSouth outh W West est EEngland ngland Either way, you’ll enjoy a weekend in a gorgeous corner of South West England. We loved it so much that we’ve already booked to return!

v THE BRITISH & IRISH LIONS TOUR 2017 LIONS LOOKING TO BECOME LEGENDS If there’s one thing more exciting than a British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand then it’s a British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand that we can actually win. Not since 1971 and the heady days of Willie John McBride, JPR Williams and Barry John have the Lions won in New Zealand. T h o s e t h re e p l a y e r s , a n d m a n y o t h e r s b e s i d e s , h a ve g o n e d ow n i n L i o n s h i s t o r y a n d n ow S a m Warburton and his merry men have a very real opportunity over the next month or so to become legends of the game in their own right. Merry men they will be if they win, but there won’t be much time for frivolity for the staff and players on this trip. In an age when cash is king, this tour is almost a welcome throwback to yesteryear with high intensity back-to-back matches against the provincial teams, as well as the three-Test series. It ’s a proper full-blown trip with 10 mouth-watering matches starting with a tour game against New Zealand Provincial Barbarians on Saturday 3rd June and ending with the Third Test against the All Blacks on Saturday 8th July.
If the Lions are to claim a series win, head coach Warren Gatland will need every one of his 41-strong squad – including Gloucester favourites Ross Moriarty and Clermont-bound Greig Laidlaw – to perform to the peak of their powers. Even then it is by no means certain they will succeed. Since 1971 the Lions have toured four times and managed only two wins in 14 games. It ’s hardly a record to set the pulses racing, so what’s different this time? After all, New Zealand have home advantage and are the World Cup holders. It may be clutching at straws but there is a suspicion, and it is only a suspicion, that the All Blacks are not as strong as they were two years ago. There is also a belief among some Lions supporters that this could be the tour that England stars, such as second-row trio Maro Itoje, George Kruis and Courtney Lawes, make the final step from being very good players to becoming great players. If that is the case – and from England’s viewpoint let’s hope so – nearly 50 years of heartache could be about to end for the Lions. Enjoy the ride!

On On your your bbike! ike! When was the last time you got out on two wheels? If it was a while ago, June is the perfect month to get back in the saddle – the weather is a bit drier,, and National bike week 2017 (10th to 18th June) has events around the country. Cycling is a brilliant way to get a ro u n d f o r s h o r t j o u r n e y s a n d commuting to work . A report by Sustrans (sustrans.org.uk) shows that i n t h e U K , t h re e o u t o f f i v e s h o r t journeys (under 5 miles) are made by car. If this was reduced to one in five, carbon emissions would be reduced by 7 . 7 m i l l i o n to n n e s . A n d m a k i n g those short journeys by bike really adds up to measurable improvements in health, and finances – every driver would save around £280 a year if they reduced that three in five to one in five short journeys by car.

TThe he h hard ard w work ork sstarts tarts h here ere Hardly a conversation around the dinner table takes place at the moment without mention of ‘Brexit ’, the horriblyentitled name given to Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union. Will it be soft or hard? What impact will the snap General Election in a few days have on the outcome? The Prime Minister has told us that ‘Brexit means Brexit’, earning the congratulations of many for seeing through the country’s wishes as expressed in the referendum nearly a year ago, but striking fear into the hearts of many others that this is an exit at all costs. We’ve seen some strange results at the ballot box over the last twelve months, but unless the opinion polls have it horribly wrong, Mrs May will be returned to power in early June with what she sees as a proper mandate from the country for us to leave the EU. For the PM and her team, the hard work starts here. There will be many elements to the negotiations, but it will be immigration and trade that occupy the majority of the headlines and presumably most of the government ’s negotiating time. So what is there that we can do to help w h i l s t n e g o t i a t i o n s a re i n p ro g r e s s ? A n s we r – a b s o l u t e l y nothing. We had our say at the ballot box a year ago and now we are powerless to affect what the government does for the pound in our pocket. At least it will be a pound not a euro!

Money Money M Matters atters
We all work hard, whether within our business or at home to balance the books. We don’t like times of uncertainty because it doesn’t enable us to plan. In fact, we don’t like anything outside our control, but we have to accept that it is for others to determine, for example, the rates at which w e p ay o u r t a x e s , t h e i n t e re s t t h a t i s c h a r g e d o n o u r mortgages and how much our British pound is worth when we try to spend it abroad. That’s ok , because all of these things are a function of the government ’s economic and fiscal strategy. It ’s all done according to a plan. We might not like that plan, but at least we have a clear picture of what it is. For the next two years that plan is on hold while the PM and her team try to persuade 27 other EU countries to dance to our tune over the terms of Brexit. I don’t think they will be terribly keen to tango and we all know it takes two to do that. Small businesses and many of our larger ones too all over the country are urging the PM to make it a ‘business-led Brexit’, with as good a free trade agreement as we can get, which will enable exporters and importers alike to continue to operate as similarly as they do now with our European neighbours. If the PM didn’t have a hard enough job running the country, she will need to bring her ‘A game’ to the negotiating table if our pockets are not going to regret the triggering of Article 50.
