Innovation Innovation m miracle iracle – B BMW MW ii8 8 T h e i 8 i s t h e h i g h est s e l l i n g hy b r i d sports car and has truly taken its class by storm. I recently got invited by BMW to drive the 2018 Coupé and it staggers me how great this car is. If you want something that catches the eye, is kind to the e n v i ro n m e n t a n d a l s o t h e p e r f e c t sports car, seriously consider this revolutionary multi-award winning vehicle.
FFresh resh and and d different ifferent to to all all o other ther ccars ars o on n tthe he rroad oad The production BMW i8, launched in 2013, was changed so little from the plug-in hybrid concept car – first s h o w n a t t h e 2 0 1 1 I n te r n a t i o n a l Motor Show in Frankfurt . It makes this BMW even more special as, due to the futuristic design, it hasn’t aged at all. It still looks fresh and different to all other cars on the road. Benoit Jacob, the i8 designer, was influenced by the 1978 BMW M1, drawn by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro (famous for DeLorean, Lotus Esprit, etc.) so the original DNA was there to build on. One of the most striking features of The Local Answer
the BMW i8 Coupé is the doors. They are of a Dihedral design and move forwards and upwards, so add a bit of drama to the car when you open them. The car I drove, by the way, was painted in a sophisticated individual Donington Grey. The interior of the i8 is familiar BMW, but also has that concept feel, like nothing else in the price range. Yes it’s a very low car to get in and out of, so do beware, but that ’s an addition to the special feel. The BMW i8 Coupé is built with an exceptional lightweight concept called LifeDrive architecture. It consists of the Drive module – an a l u m i n i u m c h a s s i s – a n d t h e L i fe module – an ultralight passenger compartment made of high-strength carbon-fibre. BMW say that “Together they create sustainability and a perfect weight balance, delivering unmatched sportiness”; it also means the suspension on the BMW i8 is a little softer and soaks up all the bumps you find on a modern UK B-road. The i8 is, in fact , perfect for the British roads with Dynamic Traction
Control (DTC), which reduces wheel spin, and the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. The powertrain in the BMW i8 is a mid-engine set up with a 231hp TwinPower Turbo threec y l i n d e r i n - l i n e p e t ro l e n g i n e (six-speed transmission) driving the rear and a 143hp two-speed electric motor which drives the front wheels. This means that the i8 can run for 34 miles on pure electric (ideal for t ow n d r i v i n g ) o r h av e a 3 7 4 h p hybrid set up which allows for sporty driving without the miles per gallon issues. The 0 - 62mph figure for the Coupé is 4.4 secs and 4.6 secs for the Roadster (convertible); the mpg is a staggering 148.6 for the i8 Coupé (134.5 for the Roadster).
TTruly ruly rredefining edefining w what hat tthe he modern ssports modern ports car car is is a about bout The BMW i8 truly redefines what the modern sports car is about; Munich has shown that you can still have a hybrid, but enjoy the sharpest of handling and performance. The BMW i8 starts from £112,735 for the Coupé and £124,735 for the Roadster.

The winner of the Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year title in 2016 performed alongside the acclaimed orchestra at The Forest Theatre in Coleford to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Royal Forest of Dean Orchestra. Adam said: “It was a very special evening. I’ve been really lucky to be supported by some of the leading musicians in Gloucestershire, so it was great to play alongside them on what was a real evening of celebration. The concert was conducted by Glyn Oxley who I’ve played alongside for a number of years. Viv Hargreaves, another person who has been influential on my career, was there as well so it was a memorable evening. “I’ve been fortunate to have been g i ve n s o m a n y o p p o r t u n i t i e s to p l ay with some of the best orchestras in

Often this genre tends to be exaggerated by Hollywood directors who are always keen to put their own twist on events. Fortunately, ‘Adrift ’ is directed superbly and features two actors out of the very top drawer. The film tells the story of Tami (Shailene Woodley) and her fiancé Richard (Sam Clafin) who are travelling from Tahiti to San Diego on a yacht . After being caught in a hurricane, Tami wakes to find Richard injured and her yacht in a sorry state. The chances of rescue are extremely slim, they ’re far off course, and a long way from the shipping lanes. The two main characters have a warm, loving chemistry. The film’s e f f e c t s a re s t a g g e r i n g , t h e s h e e r size of the ocean is captured superbly. It was a total thrill and an honour. ‘The Planets’ is one of my favourite pieces of music so to sit down a n d u s e t h e p i a n o t h a t G u s t av H o l s t composed his masterpiece on was a real privilege. Despite travelling abroad and playing some of the most famous musical venues – recent overseas engagements include a concert at the residence of the British Ambassador in Kiev – Adam has a real fondness for playing in his home county. Mike continued: “I was very young when I first joined the band and I’ve got so many wonderful memories of the early days. “Back in the 1960s and 1970s we were one of the best brass bands in the country, in fact we were the first brass band from the Forest of Dean to be invited to play at the Royal Albert Hall. A good friend of mine always used to tell me that until a customer squeals about the price they are paying for something, you’re not charging enough for your product or services. It’s an interesting concept and certainly one that cannot be universally applied, but it does make you wonder whether some businesses are charging enough for their services. It applies especially to small businesses, as regular readers will know what I think of big firm bullies, who behave as they wish to in terms of their dealings with their smaller counterparts and that includes the way they deal with their charges. My marketing training taught me that there are two ways to position your business – offer a cheap product or service and hope that everyone will buy entirely on price or offer a quality product or service that customers will buy based on that quality. But take care not to mix and match the two. If you have a cheap offering, don’t ove rd o t h e b e l l s a n d w h i s t l e s ; i f y o u h av e a q u a l i t y p ro p o s i t i o n , m a k e s u re t h a t yo u r p r i c i n g l e ve l s a re appropriate to what you are offering. And that’s where many small businesses go wrong.
TThe he ‘‘value value ffor or m money’ oney’ p proposition roposition The trick , of course, is to get to the so-called ‘value for money ’ proposition. If you price it cheaply and overdeliver, you will never make a serious amount of money and end up a ‘busy fool’. If you deliver a quality service or product but don’t charge appropriately for it, everyone will love you, but your reward will come in heaven, whereas you could enjoy some of that reward on earth too. The retail and leisure sectors find it a lot easier than the service industry. They conduct market comparisons and, in this electronic age and with the proliferation of comparison websites, it is easy for providers to compare their prices against those of their competitors. Those providing services find it a lot more difficult , but there are still ways and means of establishing what the right price should be, including market research and feedback questionnaires, which are relatively easy to organise and inexpensive to implement. Don’t be afraid to review your sales prices on a regular basis. A small increase in your charges to current customers will generally yield more than a drive for new ones, at least in the short term. And if it feels like you are working for insufficient reward, talk to your customers about it . You’ll need good negotiating skills in most cases, but if the customer feels that he/she is getting ‘value for money’, they will probably agree to it readily. And if you’re just starting up in business, make sure that you structure your pricing strategy from day one. There’s more to starting up in business than just the administration, although it ’s important to get that element right too!

It takes place on Sunday 5 t h A u g u s t a n d i s o p e n to p e o p l e of a l l a g e s a n d abilities. “Anyone can take part ,” said Charlie Griffin of Trimax Events, who are organising the big day. “It’ss ideal for families.” It certainly is because there is a fun run for the kids over 1km as well as a 10K for the more serious runners, along with a half marathon and a marathon. All the races will start and finish at Speech House Hotel in the Forest of Dean with the kids’ fun run starting at 9.10am and the 10K getting under way at 9.30am, which will allow parents enough time to watch one and take part in the other if they want to.
All All sset et ffor or b big ig k kick-off ick-off The highlight of England’s cricketing summer – the five-match Test series against India – will still be very much in its infancy when the new Gloucestershire Northern Senior Football League season gets under way. The league’s big kick-off is on Saturday 4th August with the firstround ties in the Reg Davis Memorial Cup and honorary general secretary J o h n G re e n s a i d w i t h s o m e p r i d e : “We’ve got a full set of fixtures.” That means 16 games – the league i s m a d e u p o f t wo d i v i s i o n s o f 1 6 – and four days later on Wednesday 8th August the second round of the competition, which is named in honour of the league’s former c h a i r m a n a n d p re s i d e n t w h o d i e d some 12 years ago, will be played.

The half marathon and full marathon are scheduled to start at 9am. And while the competitors will obviously be centre stage, Griffin is keen to stress that there is plenty for families to do as well. “There will be an activity day for kids,” she said. “There will be things like tug of war, sack races, archery. It should be a great day.” Trimax Events were set up some five years ago and put on about 12 events a year, mainly in the Forest of
Dean. However, the company is looking to expand its operation in the weeks, months and years ahead and put on more events across the whole of Gloucestershire. So what events do they currently organise? “As well as marathons and half marathons, we organise m u d r u n s, t r i a t h l o n s a n d OCRs,” explained Griffin. For those not in the know, an OCR is an obstacle course race and they are, says Griffin, great fun. “We build our own obstacles,” added Griffin, “it’ss very Ninja Warrior like.” ‘Warrior ’ is the word used to describe Trimax ’s biggest event on their calendar – the Forest Warrior. Work has already started in preparation for next year ’ss Forest Warrior which takes place on Sunday 28th April. Anyone wanting more information should visit www.trimaxevents.com Full story online.

Cinderford TTown Cinderford own cchairman hairman Stuart TTait ait ttargets argets p layy offs Stuart play-offs
Tait is a big supporter of 32-year-old Michael, who has added goalkeeping and defensive coach Ryan Mackerness to his staff, and he said: “We’re probably the most positive we’ve been for a long time. “We’ve kept everybody from last season and we’ve added to the squad, it’s looking very good.” Last season was their first back at t h e l e ve l a f te r re l e g a t i o n f ro m t h e Premier Division the previous year and Tait added: “The biggest part of last season was to get a settling in period. “To a certain extent we’d be happy with the same again but Paul and his assistant Andrew Smith’s recruitment has been so good that it has raised expectations – in a nice way, not in
te r m s o f p re ss u r e. I t w i l l b e h a p py days if we make the play-offs.” And while the football side of things would appear to be most definitely on an upward curve, Tait has certainly had to work hard to make sure that it is a similar story off the field. It’s the role of the chairman to deal with problems as they come along and chief among them over the past couple of months was the FA’s decision to move them sideways into the Southern League’s Division One Central for the forthcoming season. “That spooked us,” admitted Tait. “It would have increased our travelling, we’d have lost our management team and most of our players. “It would have put us back to where we were 18 months ago. It made no sense. Fortunately commonsense prevailed and the decision was rectified. “We were going to appeal but prior to the appeal it got sorted. In all it took about a week , it was a bit of fun and games!” T h e fo o t b a l l g a m e s s t a r t i n m i d August and, as you’d expect, Tait is looking forward to the new campaign. “We’re in a much better position than this time last season and we we re i n a m u c h b e t te r p o s i t i o n l a s t season than the season before so there is improvement,” he said. “The ground alterations aren’t happening quickly enough but we’ll get there.”

“We’re aiming for the play-offs, no ifs or buts about it.” T h o s e a r e t h e w o r d s o f C i n d e r fo rd Town chairman Stuart Tait when he spoke to The Local Answer ahead of the new Southern League Division One South season. And while it wil l take a significant improvement to reach the top six after last season’s 13th-placed finish, Tait was encouraged by the way Paul Michael’s team ended the previous campaign, taking 27 points from their final 14 games.

Those ground alterations include a new 3G pitch which Tait hopes will be in place for the start of the 2019/20 season, a new clubhouse and new changing rooms. “The whole site will be upgraded,” added Tait. The new pitch particularly excites Cinderford’s chairman who also doubles up as the club’s press officer.
“Youth ffootball “Youth ootball iin n tthe he FForest orest is is incredible” incredible” “We are the most senior football club in South Gloucestershire and we want to be the flagship football club for the Forest,” said Tait. “We can be the catalyst for other clubs to improve their facilities. “Youth football in the Forest is incredible. We’ve got 300 youngsters in our youth set-up, Broadwell have got 200 and Lydney have got a good number too. “But there’s a real struggle to find training pitches and a 3G pitch would get plenty of usage, it would be used by the community as a whole.” On and off the pitch Tait is certainly n o t t h e t y p e o f p e r s o n w h o l i k e s to stand still. “We’ve achieved a hell of a lot in a short period of time,” he said. “We need to continue that . I’m never a glass half empty person, I’m always a glass half full man.” Cinderford Town supporters should say ‘cheers’ to that!
