Make the filling by beating together the lemon zest, butter and caster sugar until light and creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, along with a spoonful of the ground almonds with each egg. Mix in the remaining ground almonds and the flour. Spread one tablespoon of lemon curd over the base of each tart. Spoon over the filling and smooth with a palette knife. Sprinkle the flaked almonds on the top and place on a baking tray. Innovation Innovation m miracle iracle – B BMW MW ii8 8 T h e i 8 i s t h e h i g h est s e l l i n g hy b r i d sports car and has truly taken its class by storm. I recently got invited by BMW to drive the 2018 Coupé and it staggers me how great this car is. If you want something that catches the eye, is kind to the e n v i ro n m e n t a n d a l s o t h e p e r f e c t sports car, seriously consider this revolutionary multi-award winning vehicle.

FFresh resh and and d different ifferent to to all all o other ther ccars ars o on n tthe he rroad oad The production BMW i8, launched in 2013, was changed so little from the plug-in hybrid concept car – first s h o w n a t t h e 2 0 1 1 I n te r n a t i o n a l Motor Show in Frankfurt . It makes this BMW even more special as, due to the futuristic design, it hasn’t aged at all. It still looks fresh and different to all other cars on the road. Benoit Jacob, the i8 designer, was influenced by the 1978 BMW M1, drawn by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro (famous for DeLorean, Lotus Esprit, etc.) so the original DNA was there to build on. One of the most striking features of The Local Answer

the BMW i8 Coupé is the doors. They are of a Dihedral design and move forwards and upwards, so add a bit of drama to the car when you open them. The car I drove, by the way, was painted in a sophisticated individual Donington Grey. The interior of the i8 is familiar BMW, but also has that concept feel, like nothing else in the price range. Yes it’s a very low car to get in and out of, so do beware, but that ’s an addition to the special feel. The BMW i8 Coupé is built with an exceptional lightweight concept called LifeDrive architecture. It consists of the Drive module – an a l u m i n i u m c h a s s i s – a n d t h e L i fe module – an ultralight passenger compartment made of high-strength carbon-fibre. BMW say that “Together they create sustainability and a perfect weight balance, delivering unmatched sportiness”; it also means the suspension on the BMW i8 is a little softer and soaks up all the bumps you find on a modern UK B-road. The i8 is, in fact , perfect for the British roads with Dynamic Traction

Control (DTC), which reduces wheel spin, and the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. The powertrain in the BMW i8 is a mid-engine set up with a 231hp TwinPower Turbo threec y l i n d e r i n - l i n e p e t ro l e n g i n e (six-speed transmission) driving the rear and a 143hp two-speed electric motor which drives the front wheels. This means that the i8 can run for 34 miles on pure electric (ideal for t ow n d r i v i n g ) o r h av e a 3 7 4 h p hybrid set up which allows for sporty driving without the miles per gallon issues. The 0 - 62mph figure for the Coupé is 4.4 secs and 4.6 secs for the Roadster (convertible); the mpg is a staggering 148.6 for the i8 Coupé (134.5 for the Roadster).

TTruly ruly rredefining edefining w what hat tthe he modern ssports modern ports car car is is a about bout The BMW i8 truly redefines what the modern sports car is about; Munich has shown that you can still have a hybrid, but enjoy the sharpest of handling and performance. The BMW i8 starts from £112,735 for the Coupé and £124,735 for the Roadster.

Rob R ob SSharp’s harp’s lleading eading rrole ole iin nU Uruguay ruguay cricket cricket Gloucestershire has a very proud sporting history. The county has produced champions galore over the years whether it be in cricket, rugby, swimming, athletics or many, many other sports. The county has also produced its share of top sport administrators but it’s probably fair to say that no-one from this part of the world has ever held the position currently occupied by club cricketer Rob Sharp. You see, Sharp, a player of many years’ standing at Gotherington, is vice-president of the Uruguayan Cricket Association (UCA). And while that is obviously quite a prestigious title, Sharp is also one of t h o s e p e o p l e w h o m a kes t h i n g s happen. Once he gets an idea he is determined to see it through to fruition. And that is certainly the case now that he is vice-president of the UCA . S o m u c h s o t h at at a t i m e w h e n most of us will be looking forward to the Christmas festivities, he will be heavily involved in two T20 matches

he has organised between Uruguay and Argentina, which will take place in Buenos Aires on 16th December. “It’s the 150th anniversary of the first game between the two countries,” said Sharp, a selfemployed Cheltenham businessman who lives in Gotherington. “It predates the Ashes.” These days cricket is more established in Argentina than Uruguay – Argentina are associate members of the ICC and Uruguay are

not , although Sharp is hopeful that might change in years to come. Two days after the double-header, Sharp has organised another fixture – this time in Montevideo,, the capital of Uruguay – when a Uruguay President ’s XI will play a Uruguay Invitation XI. So how did Sharp come to be vicepresident of the UCA? “My wife Alison was born in Montevideo,” the dad of four boys explained. “Her mum was Uruguayan and her dad was English and she came to this country when she was five. “I used to joke with the boys that the only way they would ever get to play international cricket was through their Uruguayan connection.” All four boys – Harry, Joe, James and Alistair – are, like their dad, decent cricketers and they will now realise their dream because all of them will play in at least one of the games in South America. After the delights of another thrilling W i m b l e d o n , i t m a y b e te m p t i n g to think that that is pretty much it for the sport of tennis in this country for another year. But if you think that you’d be very wrong. In fact, the reality is quite the opposite because these days tennis in Gloucestershire really is an all-theyear-round sport. So says Mike Angell, the chairman of the Gloucestershire Lawn Tennis A s s o c i a t i o n , w h o k n ow s a t h i n g o r two about a sport that has been taken t o a n o t h e r l ev e l by t h e l i k e s o f Federer, Nadal and Serena Williams in the 21st century. “The jewel in Gloucestershire’s crown is the county leagues,” said Angell. “We run a summer league and a winter league and they provide p e o p l e w i t h t h e o p p o r t u n i t y to p l a y competitive tennis all year.”

Gloucestershire are leading the way when it comes to developing the cricket stars of tomorrow – and that’s official. The increasingly popular All Stars Cricket programme – launched last summer – is a huge campaign to bring five to eight year olds into the game of cricket and no county is doing that better than Gloucestershire. Some 50,000 young people around the country have now taken up the ECB-driven course but Gloucestershire – through the Gloucestershire Cricket Board – are the first county to have beaten their target this summer with around 2,500 youngsters now playing at clubs in the area. The GCB’s Chris Munden is the driving force behind the campaign in t h i s p a r t o f t h e wo r l d a n d h e i s u n d e r s t a n d a b l y d e l i g h te d w i t h t h e progress being made.

The highlight of England’s cricketing summer – the five-match Test series against India – will still be very much in its infancy when the new Gloucestershire Northern Senior Football League gets under way in a few days’ time. The league’s big kick-off is on Saturday 4th August with the firstround ties in the Reg Davis Memorial Cup and honorary general secretary J o h n G re e n s a i d w i t h s o m e p r i d e : “We’ve got a full set of fixtures.” That means 16 games – the league i s m a d e u p o f t wo d i v i s i o n s o f 1 6 – and four days later on Wednesday 8th August the second round of the competition, which is named in honour of the league’s former c h a i r m a n a n d p re s i d e n t w h o d i e d some 12 years ago, will be played. Cheltenham Town chairman Andy Wilcox

N New ew CCheltenham heltenham TTown own cchairman hairman A Andy ndy W Wilcox ilcox targets targets ppromotion romotion Andy Wilcox will be flying back early from a family holiday so that he can watch Cheltenham Town’s opening game of the new season. The new chairman wants to see for himself how Gary Johnson’s new-look team get on when they host Crawley Town on Saturday 4th August . It ’s been less than three months since Wilcox , who runs Gloucestershire-based construction company LCI Rail, took over as chairman from Paul Baker who did the job for more than 20 years. And Wilcox certainly hasn’t been standing still since taking over the re i n s a s a w h o l e h o s t o f s u m m e r signings testify.

““The The start start of of a n new ew e era” ra” “Yes, it is the start of a new era,” Wilcox told The Local Answer. “Paul did a fantastic job to get the club to where they are in the Football League. When he took over as chairman no one really thought it could happen, no one dreamt it could happen. It was fantastic.” But now the club are back in League Two – they’ve only been outside the Football League for one season since

winning promotion to the big-time for the first time in 1998/99 – Wilcox is keen for the club to kick on. “I’m ambitious,” he said. “I want to take Cheltenham Town higher. It’s the same in business, I want to do as well as I can.” And Wilcox has certainly backed up those words with actions ahead of the new campaign. J o h n s o n h a s b e e n g i ve n t h e g o ahead to get the players he wants and there’s a definite feelgood factor around the club at the moment . “We’ve bought early and brought some experienced players in,” said Wilcox . “It ’s an exciting time. We needed a stronger core to the squad.” Wilcox and everyone connected with the club are confident things will b e v e r y d i f f e re n t to l a s t t i m e o u t when they ended the season in 17th spot. “We will require a big step up from last season, of course, but if and when t h a t i s a c h i ev e d w e a t C h e l t e n h a m Town Football Club see no reason why we can’t push for promotion to League One,” Wilcox said. “ T h e s e a re a m b i t i o u s t h o u g h t s o f mine but without those dreams we

We have a good manager and he’s very keen to do well.” J o h n s o n h a s b e e n a m a n a g e r fo r well over 25 years and has been in charge at Bristol City, Peterborough and Yeovil to name just three clubs.

““We We speak speak a llot ot o on n tthe he phone” phone” Wilcox added: “We’ve been working very closely and it’s going very well. FFilm ilm R Review eview – PPatrick atrick B Baines aines Adrift Adrift It ’s impossible not to feel somewhat weary about films inspired by real life stories when they hit the cinema with such frequency. Often this genre tends to be exaggerated by Hollywood directors who are always keen to put their own twist on events. Fortunately, ‘Adrift ’ is directed superbly and features two actors out of the very top drawer. The film tells the story of Tami (Shailene Woodley) and her fiancé Richard (Sam Clafin) who are travelling from Tahiti to San Diego on a yacht . After being caught in a hurricane, Tami wakes to find Richard injured and her yacht in a sorry state. The chances of rescue are extremely slim, they ’re far off course, and a long way from the shipping lanes. The two main characters have a warm, loving chemistry. W Winchcombe inchcombe Community Community CChoir hoir o open pen tto o aallll Every Wednesday morning members of the Winchcombe Community Choir gather at the Abbey Fields Centre to enjoy their weekly practice. The songs they sing are anything but traditional choir songs though, with a repertoire of world music the order of the day for the 50 members of the choir. I n c l u s i v i t y i s t h e k ey wo rd fo r t h e community choir, who welcome even the most novice singers into their team, something Choir Leader Liz Hooper says sums up the ethos of the vocal group. She said: “We’re a choir that prides i t s e l f o n o f fe r i n g o p p o r t u n i t i e s to everyone. We don’t care if you’ve never sung before, as long as you’re enthusiastic and want to learn you’ll be made very welcome.

Our whole ethos i s a b o u t b e i n g a s i n c l u s i ve a s possible – we don’t hold auditions and we’re not concerned if people wanting to join us have never been in a choir before. We want to offer opportunities to everyone.”

Choir members at a recent performance

“I belong to The Natural Voice Network and their main belief is that everyone has the right to sing without the fear of being judged or criticised, that’s what we’re all about. We get an awful lot of people who come and tell us they haven’t sung since their school days so it ’s really great to welcome them and give them opportunities to join our choir. People even turn up and tell us they can’t sing. Usually after a few practice sessions their confidence

The harmonies are very easy to pick up. We do occasionally sing pop songs but it ’s mostly world music which we focus on. It’s fantastic to be involved in a choir that’s unique, we’re not singing songs that any other choirs sing, we like to be original. “Anyone who wants to get involved should come to our Wednesday morning practice sessions. We usually have 45 members turn up every week . It’s not just about the singing – it’s nice from a social point of view for people to get together regularly. We often perform at fetes and festivals, it’s lovely to get out and play new venues.” Full story online.
