Magical Magical M Matsumoto atsumoto and and Takayama Takayama It ’s been a while since we journeyed to Japan. I’m getting restless for proper sushi, anime and bowing train attendants. So while I plan, here’s a taster for a November visit to Honshu’s heart . It ’s the perfect time to see autumn’s colours. Let’s go… From Tokyo, we head west with JR R a i l to M a t s u m o to i n N a g a n o prefecture. At Shinjuku Station buy B e n to b o xe s fo r b r u n c h , t h e n s i t b a c k a n d e n j oy t h e t h r e e - h o u r journey. More delights, scenic and cultural, await you in Matsumoto, as well as a good choice of accommodation. We enjoyed traditional hospitality at family-run Ryokan Seifuso; Ryokans are great, but if you prefer larger, Europeanstyle hotels, there are plenty. Whatever you choose, book early!

(the latter, outside town) are top attractions. If you only visit one, make it the Hirashiro (‘flatland’) s t y l e c a s t l e w i t h i t s s o p h i s t i c a te d defensive moats, gates, walls and ‘nightingale’ floors – early intruder alarms. The architecture, calming surrounding park and exhibits engaged us for hours – I challenge you not to picture Rowan Atkinson’s ‘Snickers’ Ninja! Eating out can be as adventurous as you wish, ranging from Kobayashi-Soba to European-style dining and bakeries such as SWEET Co.Nawate. Still hungry? The ubiquitous 7-Eleven stores are always good for late night Onigiri rice balls and other snacks.

Kuwataniya, which is ideal for exploring Takayama’s old town, Shiroyama Park and Hida-Takayama Miyagawa morning market . In November, the riverbank walkway is a riot of autumn colours, while 15 minutes away by train, Hida Furukawa’s lanes, koi streams and Ichi No Machi Coffee shop is a great excursion. So is a day-trip to the UNESCO World Heritage villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama. However, two are better, especially if you also want to visit Kyoto’s temples and feed Nara’s famous deer. When planning your trip, just remember that Honshu is deceptively large – don’t attempt too much! You can always visit again; the Land of the Rising Sun has that effect! The Local Answer

M Monitoring onitoring yyour our health h ealth aand nd ffitness itness Using goals when exercising and getting fitter is a great way of increasing adherence, keeping motivation high, as well as logging vital improvements in performance and condition. Within the realms of various goals, certain measures are re g u l a r l y used in a ss e s s i n g improvement over time, such as weight lost or lifted for example. However, it’s worth exploring different ways of monitoring your improvements over time, which can often lead to more appropriate strategies to get towards your goal and to new more guidance driven goals.

Innovation Innovation m miracle iracle – B BMW MW ii8 8 T h e i 8 i s t h e h i g h est s e l l i n g hy b r i d sports car and has truly taken its class by storm. I recently got invited by BMW to drive the 2018 Coupé and it staggers me how great this car is. If you want something that catches the eye, is kind to the e n v i ro n m e n t a n d a l s o t h e p e r f e c t sports car, seriously consider this revolutionary multi-award winning vehicle.

FFresh resh and and d different ifferent to to all all o other ther ccars ars o on n tthe he rroad oad The production BMW i8, launched in 2013, was changed so little from the plug-in hybrid concept car – first s h o w n a t t h e 2 0 1 1 I n te r n a t i o n a l Motor Show in Frankfurt . It makes this BMW even more special as, due to the futuristic design, it hasn’t aged at all. It still looks fresh and different to all other cars on the road. Benoit Jacob, the i8 designer, was influenced by the 1978 BMW M1, drawn by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro (famous for DeLorean, Lotus Esprit, etc.) so the original DNA was there to build on. One of the most striking features of The Local Answer

the BMW i8 Coupé is the doors. They are of a Dihedral design and move forwards and upwards, so add a bit of drama to the car when you open them. The car I drove, by the way, was painted in a sophisticated individual Donington Grey. The interior of the i8 is familiar BMW, but also has that concept feel, like nothing else in the price range. Yes it’s a very low car to get in and out of, so do beware, but that ’s an addition to the special feel. The BMW i8 Coupé is built with an exceptional lightweight concept called LifeDrive architecture. It consists of the Drive module – an a l u m i n i u m c h a s s i s – a n d t h e L i fe module – an ultralight passenger compartment made of high-strength carbon-fibre. BMW say that “Together they create sustainability and a perfect weight balance, delivering unmatched sportiness”; it also means the suspension on the BMW i8 is a little softer and soaks up all the bumps you find on a modern UK B-road. The i8 is, in fact , perfect for the British roads with Dynamic Traction

Control (DTC), which reduces wheel spin, and the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. The powertrain in the BMW i8 is a mid-engine set up with a 231hp TwinPower Turbo threec y l i n d e r i n - l i n e p e t ro l e n g i n e (six-speed transmission) driving the rear and a 143hp two-speed electric motor which drives the front wheels. This means that the i8 can run for 34 miles on pure electric (ideal for t ow n d r i v i n g ) o r h av e a 3 7 4 h p hybrid set up which allows for sporty driving without the miles per gallon issues. The 0 - 62mph figure for the Coupé is 4.4 secs and 4.6 secs for the Roadster (convertible); the mpg is a staggering 148.6 for the i8 Coupé (134.5 for the Roadster).

TTruly ruly rredefining edefining w what hat tthe he modern ssports modern ports car car is is a about bout The BMW i8 truly redefines what the modern sports car is about; Munich has shown that you can still have a hybrid, but enjoy the sharpest of handling and performance. The BMW i8 starts from £112,735 for the Coupé and £124,735 for the Roadster.

That ’s the theory anyway. But , in my experience, something always happens to throw my good intentions off course. When I first became Leader in 2007, the terrible flooding hit us at the end of July that year, with the subsequent loss of water supply. That, quite rightly,, was the focus of mine and many others’ attention for that period. In August 2011, riots hit cities across the country and Gloucester had its own relatively minor skirmish. Minor it may have been, but it ’s not something we’re proud of or want to see happen again, so a certain amount of community reassurance was necessary. In 2014, the Council got hit by a cyber attack and recovering from that took some time. I n 2 0 1 6 , we ve r y s a d l y l o s t m y g o o d f r i e n d , Longlevens councillor and Cabinet colleague Jim Porter. Although Jim hadn’t been well for a little while, it still came as a blow and we still miss Jim’s wit, wisdom, frankness and boundless energy today. On a much happier note, both of my two young daughters were born in July – Eirys in 2015 and Tydwen last year – so August in each of those years was very much dominated by a new baby..

Bringing B ringing tthe he g gate ate sstreets treets tto o llife ife There are plenty of events taking place in the city during August . A particular favourite of mine is the Gloucester Goes Retro Festival run by Councillor Colin Organ, which takes place on 25th August. It brings the gate streets to life like no other event in my view. The Kings Jam urban festival taking place in Kings Square is another worth checking out. I’ve already been making a list of all the things I want to get done in August. How many I manage to tick off that list remains to be seen. I wish you all an enjoyable August . I’m hoping, for once, that it’s a quiet month! @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

FFilm ilm R Review eview – PPatrick atrick B Baines aines Adrift Adrift It ’s impossible not to feel somewhat weary about films inspired by real life stories when they hit the cinema with such frequency. Often this genre tends to be exaggerated by Hollywood directors who are always keen to put their own twist on events. Fortunately, ‘Adrift ’ is directed superbly and features two actors out of the very top drawer. The film tells the story of Tami (Shailene Woodley) and her fiancé Richard (Sam Clafin) who are travelling from Tahiti to San Diego on a yacht . After being caught in a hurricane, Tami wakes to find Richard injured and her yacht in a sorry state. The chances of rescue are extremely slim, they ’re far off course, and a long way from the shipping lanes. The two main characters have a warm, loving chemistry. The film’s e f f e c t s a re s t a g g e r i n g , t h e s h e e r size of the ocean is captured superbly. There are some incredible shots of sunsets and marine life that are to be treasured. ‘Adrift’ is a really enjoyable watch. Full review online.

with the Gloucester History Festival and we really want to help build that into a festival that’s recognised all over the country. “What’s really exciting is we get to harness the skills and advice from several partners to implement a longterm strategy for success. Our board i n c l u d e s re p re s e n t a t i v e s f ro m t h e U n i ve r s i t y of Gloucestershire, Gloucester Cathedral, the Town Council, and various local enterprise partnerships. We’ve got three board members under the age of 30, which really reinforces our desire to focus on creating events for Gloucestershire’s children and young adults to enjoy. “We’re very ambitious, we have an aspiration to help in Gloucester’s bid for the European City of Culture in 2025 which, if successful, would be incredible for the city. Our work is funded through a variety of sources. We work alongside Gloucester City Council, Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.”

With over 150 members, the choir get to rehearse and perform at one of Gloucestershire’s most stunning buildings and work alongside one of the most acclaimed musical directors in England. With their summer break nearing its end the members of the choral group are looking ahead to what promises to be a busy schedule. “We’ll be getting together for our first practise session on the first week in September”, said Allen Prior, Chairman of the Gloucester Choral Society. He continued: “We practice in the Cathedral, we rehearse right through until late spring with only a brief break at Christmas. The standard we’re measured against is very high, so rehearsals are very important . We’re busy throughout the whole of winter and spring seasons, with several concerts booked in already.

“Our first major concert comes in early October – The Dream of Gerontius – which is a major work that takes a lot of practise. It’s one of the most popular choral works around, it’s performed a lot by choral societies. We’ve got three top class international soloists that will be joining us for the concert, everyone involved is looking ahead with real excitement for what will be a great evening.” One of Allen’s first tasks when he became Chairman five years ago was

to introduce an idea to increase the society ’s income. FFun un bbeside eside tthe he seaside seaside The sunshine and hot weather are finally here; the sea temperature has risen to approximately 15-20°C and the beaches are filled with families and friends enjoying all the coast has to offer. We have a great variety of beaches in the UK ranging from dunes, pebbles and cliffs to name a few.

FFossil ossil h hunting unting Thousands of years ago, dinosaur a n d a n i m a l b o n es s et t l e d o n t h e seabed and were buried by s e d i m e n t ; fo r m i n g fo ss i l s . A s t i m e has moved on, the fossils have risen to the surface and can be found today washed up on our beaches. A f u n a c t i v i t y to d o a t a n y a g e while down by the sea is fossil hunting. You can pack up a little activity kit consisting of a magnifying glass, an old toothbrush for dusting away sand, a camera and a fossil identification sheet. The best time of d a y to d o t h i s i s w h e n t h e t i d e i s dropping back out to sea. This is not only the safest time to do it, but also the waves will have washed up a fresh batch of wild finds.

The Local Answer

R Rock ock p pools ools Another excellent way t o s p e n d y o u r d ay by the coast is looking into rock pools. On a low tide at a rocky beach there will be a whole host of ro c k p o o l s h o u s i n g a variety of critters. The e n v i ro n m e n t within them is continually changing , so the plants and animals that live in t h e m h a ve t o b e p a r t i c u l a r l y h a rd y t o survive such conditions. The sea levels regularly fluctuate, as does the temperature with exposure to sunlight and rough tides. In these underwater habitats, you are likely to discover a variety of crabs, shrimps, mussels, whelk and starfish clinging to rocks, along with many plants. It isn’t recommended t o u s e n e t s to c a t c h t h e a n i m a l s living there, as they are delicate and this can do them harm. Instead, you c a n f l o at a s m a l l b u c k et i n s i d e t h e rock pool and see what swims into it for further identification. You don’t

want to get caught out by the tide either, so make sure it is pushing back out to sea before you start up your investigations.

K Keep eep iitt clean clean No beach visit is complete without a family picnic; however, it is best to r e m o ve a s m u c h p a c k a g i n g a s possible at home to reduce the likelihood of litter getting left behind or blowing away in the wind. This, of course, does great harm to our environment and wildlife survival due to animals getting tangled up or ingesting rubbish. You can also ‘take 3 for the sea’. This is an idea whereby you pick up three pieces of litter found on the beach and dispose of them appropriately. Doing so will help towards reducing the alarming amount of plastics and debris found on our beaches and in our oceans. We can all do our bit to help reduce the amount of debris already scattered around our beaches, and the most encouraging way to do this is not only to educate but to model it to younger generations to restore the natural beauty of our coast.

EEire ire iiss ttargeting argeting ssuccess uccess iin n SSouth outh A Africa frica Teenager Eire Rowland-Evans says she finds it “quite hard” to juggle all her activities. That ’s hardly surprising because she’s a very good swimmer, a very good pole vaulter and very good at tug of war. She’ss good at other sports too but ask her which she’s best at and she’ll say, after some hesitation, “tug of war”. It’ss not what many would consider a mainstream sport but it’s one the 16 year-old former Ribston Hall High School pupil in Gloucester has been involved in for the best part of four years now. And very good at it she is too because she has represented England Under-18s and despite only just having turned 16 she is set to captain the team in the world championships in South Africa in September. “I started when I was 12 when I joined the Army cadets,” said Eire, who is a member of Eastern Avenue Platoon. I joined the cadets because I

Pride that they completed the 26.2mile challenge presented by the most iconic distance race in the world and pride also that they raised more than £12,000 for their two chosen charities – The Spring Centre in Quedgeley and Maggie’s Cancer Support in Cheltenham. And the story doesn’t end there b e c a u s e t h e fo u r r u n n e r s – S i m o n Trippett , Victoria Anderson, Wendy Worger and Steve Jones – who were all competing in their first ever marathon, have discovered a love of all things running. So much so that the quartet, who all work at The Property Centre’s head office just outside Gloucester, have all

thought it was really exciting and would give me lots of opportunities to do sport.” She wasn’t wrong either and as well as athletics, swimming and tug of war, it has given her the opportunity to play hockey, football, do cross country and much more. And just in case you think Eire is a sports fanatic who thinks about nothing else you’d be very wrong. “The cadets have given me a good put in for the ballot for next year ’s London spectacular.

All All sset et ffor or b big ig k kick-off ick-off The highlight of England’s cricketing summer – the five-match Test series against India – will still be very much in its infancy when the new Gloucestershire Northern Senior Football League season gets under way. The league’s big kick-off is on Saturday 4th August with the firstround ties in the Reg Davis Memorial Cup and honorary general secretary J o h n G re e n s a i d w i t h s o m e p r i d e : “We’ve got a full set of fixtures.” That means 16 games – the league i s m a d e u p o f t wo d i v i s i o n s o f 1 6 – and four days later on Wednesday 8th August the second round of the competition, which is named in honour of the league’s former c h a i r m a n a n d p re s i d e n t w h o d i e d some 12 years ago, will be played. chance to learn new skills and gain new qualifications,” she said. Those include first aid, working with radios, teaching and learning about weapons. But it is the tug of war that has the biggest pull on young Eire, who lives in Elmbridge with her family. It’s a sport that has enabled her to travel all over the country and further afield – she competed in Belgium with the Army cadets last year – and she is of course looking forward to going to Cape Town in a few weeks’ time. Eight pullers make up a tug of war team, so what makes a good puller? “You need really strong legs,” said t h e s o o n to b e C h e l te n h a m L a d i e s ’ College pupil. “A lot of people think you need powerful arms but you need a really strong core because you need to get your core really close to the ground. You also need lots of stamina.” Full story online. Saturday 11th August and Green said they try to get the cup competition completed by late September or early October at the latest.

SStars tars o off tthe he ffuture uture Gloucestershire are leading the way when it comes to developing the cricket stars of tomorrow – and that’s official. The increasingly popular All Stars Cricket programme – launched last summer – is a huge campaign to bring five to eight year olds into the game of cricket and no county is doing that better than Gloucestershire. Some 50,000 young people around the country have now taken up the ECB-driven course but Gloucestershire – through the Gloucestershire Cricket Board – are the first county to have beaten their target this summer with around 2,500 youngsters now playing at clubs in the area. G Gloucester loucester CCity ity llook ook tto ob build uild on on last last sseason’s eason’s p progress rogress The new football season is just around the corner and Gloucester City boss Marc Richards couldn’t be happier. The 36 -year-old is preparing for his first full season as manager of the National League South club having taken charge in the final days of last year. And even though the off-season is getting shorter and shorter – the new c a m p a i g n k i c ks o f f o n S a t u rd ay 4 t h August – Richards says he is excited by the prospect of what lies ahead over the next nine or 10 months or so. R i c h a rd s, w h o h a d j u s t re t u r n e d from a short family break in Devon when he spoke to The Local Answer, has every reason to be excited of course after steering the club into mid-table security last time out . They finished 14th in the 22-strong division and Richards said: “We had a really good February and March which we needed when you consider what our run-in was.

““The The p players layers w worked orked rreally eally h hard” ard” “The players worked really hard and it was really pleasing because we d r o p p e d i n to t h e b o t t o m t h r e e i n December when we didn’t play a couple of games.” R i c h a rd s i s h o p i n g t h a t t h ey c a n carry that encouraging second half of the season form into the new campaign but the one-time Gloucester player – he was a central midfielder or central defender – knows it will be tougher than ever in 2018/19. “There are some real big-hitters in the division,” he s aid. “Chippenham Town and Bath City are close by and then further afield there’s Woking , Torquay, Billericay, Dulwich and Slough. “I think we’ll be looking to consolidate our place in the division again this season.” A n d w h at m a k es t h at t a s k a l l t h e tougher of course is that Gloucester

Richards remains optimistic that the club will be back at their Meadow Park ground in Gloucester for the start of the 2019/20 season even though they haven’t played there since the devastating floods of 2007.

““I’m I’m a glass glass half half full f ul l m man” an” “I’m a glass half full man,” he said. “To be honest , I’m not sure I could do this job if I didn’t think it was going to happen.” Richards’ predecessor as Gloucester b o s s, T i m H a r r i s , a d v i s e d h i m t o concentrate only on football matters when he took on the job and not to involve himself in off-the-field concerns but Richards admits it is sometimes difficult to separate the two.
