Nibley N ibley FFestival estival aattracts ttracts superstar superstar musicians musicians ‘From small acorns do mighty oaks grow ’ – that’s a saying that sums up the Nibley Festival quite nicely. It ’s been 12 years since the inaugural Nibley Festival took place, and a lot has changed since that weekend back in 2006. This year a host of hugely successful musicians will be gracing the main stage at Nibley, which is quite a difference to the first festival that took place in a solitary tent in a field. “We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved,” said Tom de Pass, one of t h e vo l u n te e r s w h o wo r ks i n t h e communications team at the Nibley Festival. “When we look back at the first couple of years and look where we’re at now, there’s a huge difference. “Nowadays, thanks to all the hard work of the organising committee and the support of everyone who attends, we’ve managed to grow the festival and attendances are fantastic. A lot of the people involved in the first festival

Looking for headline acts can be quite tricky, you need them to appeal to everyone. We were delighted when Example confirmed his attendance, he’s got a big fan base and is sure to put on a great show. The Pigeon Detectives and Space are two bands that have sold millions of records and played at some of the biggest festivals in the country so to welcome them to Nibley is great.” It ’s not just about the big names though, the organising committee at the Nibley Festival work hard to book a number of acts who haven’t yet made the big time. We can also focus on using eco-friendly and recycled materials, minimising our purchase of synthetic materials and instead choosing cotton or bamboo for our clothing. A Apprentices pprentices The phrase ‘growing your own’ is widely used in many walks of life. It isn’t simply the domain of those who run their own allotment , but applies equally to those w h o r u n t h e i r o w n b u s i n e ss . I f yo u a re a n e m p l o ye r hiring trained staff, the market has been tough for some while. This article doesn’t seek to explore why that is, although it might be an interesting enough subject of its own. No, I’m here to explore, and indeed promote, the benefits of ‘growing your own’.

I f y o u l i ve l o n g e n o u g h , l i fe c y c l e s t u r n ev e r y f ew decades and the apprenticeships that were available ‘when I was a lad’ have come back into fashion, suitably modernised, in recent years. Small businesses (those w i t h l e ss t h a n 5 0 s t a f f ) , w h o e m p l o y a yo u n g apprentice aged between 16 and 18, receive government backing in the form of full funding for their training costs of the apprentice. Employer National Insurance Contributions are waived for all apprentices under the age of 25. The government has decided (hurrah!) that bigger businesses should help with this funding and last year introduced a levy of 0.5% on any company whose payroll bill exceeds £3 million a year. It was an ambitious plan, and one that wasn’t without its challenges, but without ambition, businesses would not flourish.
A ffantastic, antastic, ccost-effective ost-effective o opportunity pportunity With the difficult recruitment market – will it be even more difficult in a year’s time when the UK is divorced from the EU? – the idea of bringing in and developing your own talent could be a fantastic opportunity for small businesses. Not only does it deliver a costeffective option, it can mean you have a loyal and dedicated member of staff for several years to come. Don’t be put off by the mechanics of finding an apprentice. You have to put him or her through appropriate training and the provider of that training will often be able to help you source candidates. Liaison with local schools and colleges can turn out to be highly valuable in giving you an early opportunity to find the best candidate. I don’t speak from a theoretical point of view. We took on an apprentice in 2015 who has developed into a first-class member of the team. Buoyed by our success with that , we’ve done the same again this year and look forward to welcoming our latest apprentice when his exams and summer holidays are out of the way.

New N ew llook ook ffor or ccup up ccompetitions ompetitions iin n SStroud troud The Stroud Football League is to have a bit of a makeover this season. Not one of those makeovers that you have when things go wrong , you understand, far from it because the Stroud League is in extremely rude health. S o m u c h s o t h at t h e n u m b e r of teams competing in 2018/19 – 90 – is actually an increase of two on last season, and it’s fair to say that last season’s tally was pretty good. The league structure will remain unchanged – teams will compete across seven divisions – but there will be a change in how the cup competitions are run this season. The big change is that the Stroud League will now run the ever popular charities cup competitions. In the past they have operated under the Stroud League’s umbrella – raising plenty of money for good c a u s e s – w i t h o u t b e i n g r u n by t h e league, but that will change in the new campaign with the league’s
committee running the various competitions. T h e c h a r i t i e s c u p s – fo r m e r l y known as the hospital cups – have been running since the 1920s so they are a big part of football in and around the Stroud area. That will still be very much the case this season, although there will be a few tweaks to how the competitions will be run. “Last season there were six cup
competitions, but this year there will be five cup competitions and three plate competitions,” said Jeff Willerton, the league’s general secretary and fixtures secretary. He added that there would be no group stages this time around and the first-round losers of the various cup competitions would then compete in one of the three plate competitions, dependent on their playing level.

A n y o n e w h o h a s p l ay e d c r i c k e t against Oakridge over the past 25 or 30 years will know who Mark Robbins is. Now 42, he is the big-hitting lefthanded batsman who can clear the boundary pretty much all round the g ro u n d . B u t w h i l e t h e re i s p owe r aplenty, it ’s the sweetness of his timing that sets him apart from most other players who play at the same level as him. That level is in Division One of the Cotswold District League and Robbins admits that he could have played at a higher level, certainly back in the day. He played Gloucestershire age group cricket from under-11 all the way through to under-18 and also played for a Gloucestershire Schools Association side that also took in Avon w h i c h s aw h i m l i n e u p a l o n g s i d e f u t u re England st a r M a rc u s Trescothick .
Gloucestershire’s one-time top rugby referee Chris White officiated all over the world back in the day. Now 54, these days White is passing on that experience to the next generation of rugby referees through his job as the RFU’s national referee academy manager. One of the great things about this time of the year is that the highlight of Gloucestershire’s cricketing summer is just around the corner. The Cheltenham Cricket Festival has been a major part of the county ’s summer for years – it ’s been going since the 1870s – and what makes it so fascinating is that it keeps finding new ways to reinvent itself. Stroud AC chairman Jim Adams, centre, is a big supporter of the Frampton 10K which this year takes place on Monday 2nd July
TThe he Frampton Frampton 110K 0K h hits its tthe he h high igh n notes otes ffor or JJim im A Adams dams It’s probably fair to say that singer Ed Sheeran is unlikely to ever take part in the Frampton 10K . And yet the award-winning megastar has got more in common with one of the leading races on Gloucestershire’s calendar than you may think . That ’s because just like one of Sheeran’s concerts, the ever-popular Frampton 10K ‘sells out’ within hours of places going up for grabs. “ T h e re a re o n l y 5 0 0 e n t r i e s a n d they were all taken within two hours of them becoming available in January,” said Stroud and District At h l et i c C l u b c h a i r m a n J i m A d a m s. “ Pe o p l e a re s i t t i n g by t h e i r computers to make sure they can get one of the race spots.” Okay, the numbers involved are s l i g h t l y d i f fe r e n t t o t h o s e g o i n g to see Sheeran but the feelgood factor is just the same – people want to be i n vo l ve d i n s o m e t h i n g t h a t i s ve r y good.
“It’s tthe “It’s he o one ne e everyone veryone wants wants tto o ttake ake p part art iin” n” The Frampton 10K is one of a good number of races organised by Stroud AC over the course of year – this year ’s takes place on Monday 2nd July at 7.30pm – and Adams added: “It’s probably the most popular race on our calendar, it’s the one everyone
wants to take part in.” And that’s not really surprising when you hear what Adams has to say about it. “It’s a lovely friendly race,” he said. “It ’s based on the green in front of The Bell and a barbecue is provided by t h e l o c a l m e m b e r s o f t h e ‘ 4 1 Club’ – a branch of the Rotary Club for members over 40. It ’s a really nice race to participate in, spectate or marshal.” The race also finishes on the green but it ’s not just the start and finish that makes it such a popular event. “The runners head down to the village of Fretherne and then down to the River Severn,” continued Adams, “before coming back in a loop to Frampton. There are lovely scenic views.
“It’s “It’s a ccompetitive ompetitive rrace” ace” “We get competitors from all over the county taking part – from Dursley Running Club, Almost Athletes, Gloucester City, Cheltenham Harriers. It ’s a very, very well represented event and it ’s great to see all the runners from the other clubs. “It’s a nice competitive race but it’s also a social race.” And once the Frampton 10K is done and dusted, don’t think for one minute that it will mean Adams and his organising team will be putting t h e i r f e e t u p fo r t h e re s t o f t h e summer.
It ’s only a few short weeks since the club ran the ever popular Stroud Beer Race – that took place around Minchinhampton on 4th June – and it won’t be long until all eyes will be on the Cherington 10K . That takes place on Thursday 12th July (7pm) and is different from the Frampton 10K because it is open only to Stroud AC members.
