from June and peaking in August. Their tiny head and body measure 50 -70mm, and they have a prehensile tail which they use as a fifth limb to wrap around stems to aid nimble climbing. Small, rounded and hairy ears, a blunt nose, pure white underside and russet-orange hair on top is the makeup of these marvellous little mice.

SSummer ummer in in G Gloucester loucester Gloucester ’s summer events programme this year is as strong as ever, despite a couple of notable events taking a year off in 2018. The Food Festival at Gloucester Quays has been cancelled for 2018 to allow the refurbishment of Orchard Square (the former car park area outside the Waterways Museum) to be done. This means that the beach in the same area will also not be happening. There are no concerts at the Kingsholm Stadium, which has previously hosted the likes of Elton John, Tom Jones and Lionel Richie, this year as the hallowed turf is ripped up to be replaced by a new hybrid surface. Both projects should produce long-term benefits – a much-improved public space at the Docks and a better playing surface for Johan Ackermann’s men at Kingsholm. Our public spaces are important . We now have a wonderful new area outside the Cathedral, as a result of Project Pilgrim, which has already been used for the launch of the month-long FestivAll in May.. The enhanced Orchard Square will mean a greater potential for events as well as a more attractive environment all year-round. Next year, I want us to finally be on site and delivering a new Kings Square. I know people have “heard it all before” and will “believe it when it happens”, but I really believe we are closer to delivering it than we ever have been before. The Aethelflaed events in June showed the potential of St Oswalds Priory to host occasional events.

Av very ery sstrong trong e events vents p programme rogramme ffor or tthe he ccity ity tthis his ssummer ummer Despite these high profile absentees, there is still a very strong events programme for the city this summer – ranging from the Aethelflaed celebrations last month to the traditional Carnival and funfair, to the Siege of Gloucester anniversary in September. The Carnival, which has undergone a revival in recent years, will be even better this year thanks to a £37,000 grant from the Arts Council to the Carnival Arts Partnership. Events like the Kings Jam Festival of hip hop and urban culture, the PRO Insurance-backed “Gloucester Goes Retro” and the WSP Solicitors-sponsored “Art in the City” show the potential of Kings Square to stage these activities, as well as livening up the surrounding gate streets. Despite the budget reductions of recent years, the City Council still spends £160,000 a year on staging events. We don’t do it alone by any means – Marketing Gloucester delivers most of the events on behalf of the City Council, but events are also put on by organisations like Gloucester Quays, Gloucester ’s Business Improvement District , Gloucester Culture Trust and others. CCarnival arnival ttime ime ffor or G Gloucester loucester The 2018 Gloucester Carnival takes place later this month, in what promises to be a fantastic day for the city. The carnival procession will meander its way through the city streets on Saturday 21st July when the people of Gloucester take to floats to show off their colourful costumes. Karen Pearson, Events and Operations Manager at Gloucester Carnival, says the 2018 celebrations promise to be a must-see event for the city residents. She said: “Gloucester Carnival continues to go from strength to s t re n g t h , a n d 2 0 1 8 p r o m i s e s to b e another fantastic event. This is going to be the 82nd carnival held in Gloucester. This year we’ve got a wonderful procession, the theme being ‘world in motion’ which reflects Gloucester’s industrial heritage around the making of vehicles. “Another theme we’re reflecting is

the role migration has played in the long history of the city. Carnival is always one of the best days in the calendar, it ’s a day when everyone comes together and has a great time. “The whole carnival is centred around the procession. People will be dressing up in amazing costumes and having a great time. The carnival is a great celebration of colour and fun.

FFilm ilm R Review eview – PPatrick atrick B Baines aines Jurassic Jurassic World: World: Fallen Fallen K Kingdom ingdom Three years ago, director Colin Trevorrow brought Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park franchise back to life. ‘Jurassic World’ was a huge success, The film grossed over a billion dollars worldwide and brought dinosaurs back to the big screen with one almighty bang. The follow-up to that film begins with a volcano erupting on Isla Nublar, the island with all the dinosaurs on that we first saw way back in the 1993 blockbuster ‘Jurassic Park’. Three years have passed since the dinosaur theme park that featured in the previous film was destroyed and now the idea is to round up all the dinosaurs and move them onto a new island, away from the liquid magma that is b e i n g p ro p e l l e d a c ro s s t h e l a n d s c a p e o f t h e i r c u r r e n t h o m e. Rather predictably, the rehousing of the dinosaurs goes horribly wrong, that ’s where the film takes a dark twist. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a l o t o f f u n . O n e m a j o r p ro b l e m , however, is the film’s endless rush to get to the next plot point. Full review online.

The most satisfying part of the job is seeing the smiles on the faces of the participants and everyone who comes to watch the procession. Carnival is all about people coming together a n d h av i n g f u n a n d b r i n g i n g communities together. A lot of t h e o r g a n i s a t i o n s i n vo l ve d i n the carnival arts partnership will b e i n v o l ve d i n d e s i g n i n g costumes for local community groups. “The procession starts on lower Westgate Street and goes through the city centre all the way down to Gloucester Park . It usually takes about an hour or so to complete the route, that’s obviously dependent on the number of participants. We’re really pleased with the number of entries for this year ’s carnival, it promises to be a fantastic day. We’ll be praying for a nice sunny day, although even if it does rain we won’t be put off.”

We can also focus on using eco-friendly and recycled materials, minimising our purchase of synthetic materials and instead choosing cotton or bamboo for our clothing. The phrase ‘growing your own’ is widely used in many walks of life. It isn’t simply the domain of those who run their own allotment , but applies equally to those w h o r u n t h e i r o w n b u s i n e ss . I f yo u a re a n e m p l o ye r hiring trained staff, the market has been tough for some while. This article doesn’t seek to explore why that is, although it might be an interesting enough subject of its own. No, I’m here to explore, and indeed promote, the benefits of ‘growing your own’.

SSmall mall b businesses usinesses receive receive government government backing b acking iin n tthe he fform orm o off ffunding unding I f y o u l i ve l o n g e n o u g h , l i fe c y c l e s t u r n ev e r y f ew decades and the apprenticeships that were available ‘when I was a lad’ have come back into fashion, suitably modernised, in recent years. Small businesses (those w i t h l e ss t h a n 5 0 s t a f f ) , w h o e m p l o y a yo u n g apprentice aged between 16 and 18, receive government backing in the form of full funding for their training costs of the apprentice. Employer National Insurance Contributions are waived for all apprentices under the age of 25. The government has decided (hurrah!) that bigger businesses should help with this funding and last year introduced a levy of 0.5% on any company whose payroll bill exceeds £3 million a year. It was an ambitious plan, and one that wasn’t without its challenges, but without ambition, businesses would not flourish.

With the difficult recruitment market – will it be even more difficult in a year’s time when the UK is divorced from the EU? – the idea of bringing in and developing your own talent could be a fantastic opportunity for small businesses. Not only does it deliver a costeffective option, it can mean you have a loyal and dedicated member of staff for several years to come. Don’t be put off by the mechanics of finding an apprentice. You have to put him or her through appropriate training and the provider of that training will often be able to help you source candidates. Liaison with local schools and colleges can turn out to be highly valuable in giving you an early opportunity to find the best candidate. I don’t speak from a theoretical point of view. We took on an apprentice in 2015 who has developed into a first-class member of the team. Buoyed by our success with that , we’ve done the same again this year and look forward to welcoming our latest apprentice when his exams and summer holidays are out of the way.

That ’s not too surprising because h e o bv i o u s l y d i d p l e n t y o f homework in his younger days as well. You don’t play well over 450 games for Gloucester without knowing something about the players you are coming up against week in, week out. The interview had been arranged through his son Dave – a well-known figure in local rugby circles in Gloucester – and Booth senior, one of the greats of Gloucester rugby back in the day, was certainly prepared for the questions that were put to him. And while the 79 -year-old was more than happy to talk about his many achievements over the years, he was also keen to talk about the great game of rugby in more general terms. You see, Booth is something of a rugby connoisseur. A one-time scrum-half, hanging up his boots at

the age of 32 didn’t mean that he was turning his back on a game that had played such a big part in his life. Far from it. He was encouraged to join Gloucester ’s committee almost as soon as he had untied his laces for the last time and he went on to coach England’s Under-21s some 25odd years ago. These days he is a life member at Gloucester and is a regular at Kingsholm alongside his good friend

Peter Ford – another Gloucester great . And they go to some away games too, including the recent European Challenge Cup final against Cardiff Blues in Bilbao. Booth’ss love of all things Gloucester kicked in at a very early age. “I was born only 50 to 70 yards away from Kingsholm,” he said. And the future scrum-half was soon playing the game that is so i m p o r t a n t to s o m a n y i n h i s h o m e city. “As a boy we used to go to a recreation field just up the road,” recalled Booth. “We’d roll up a sack cloth, tie a piece of string round it and use it as a ball. And we’d put coats down for the posts. “I remember coming home one day and I’d lost my best coat – I had to stay in for a long time after that!” And while a coat-less Booth was clearly feeling the cold more than his mates, he was soon to discover that playing rugby for real was enough to warm anyone’s heart. Driving D riving G Gloucester loucester fforward orward Keith Wood grew up playing golf at Gloucester Golf Club. So when he was told that his beloved club was going to close he was determined it wouldn’t happen. And his determination certainly paid off. Not only did he succeed in saving the course that had been his second home for so many years, he is now also the club’s general manager. A n d t h a t s a m e d e te r m i n a t i o n t h a t kept the club open is now the driving force behind pushing the club forward – a d e te r m i n a t i o n t h a t h a s s e e n m e m b e r s h i p r i s e f ro m 3 0 0 to m o re than 370 in the past nine months. It was only nine months ago that the golf club, which has been a fixture on R o b i n swo o d H i l l f o r m o re t h a n 4 0 years, looked to have run its course. And it surely would have closed but for the efforts of Keith Wood, who was the club’s head professional at the time. “We got told by the previous owners on 6th October that they were going to close the club on 31st October,” said Wood. “They said the golf club wasn’t v i a b l e a n d t h a t t h e y we re m a k i n g a six-figure loss every year.” So what did Wood do? “ I a p p r o a c h e d t h e m a n d to l d t h e m they couldn’t close the golf club, I said it was 40 years old,” he explained. Wood knew how much the club meant to so many people and he b a c k e d u p h i s wo r d s w i t h d e e d s , s o m u c h s o t h a t by 1 1 t h N ov e m b e r h e was in a position to sign a lease for 20 years.

“I’ve done a deal to lease it on behalf of the members,” said Wood. “The members have backed me to become general secretary, they ’ve been brilliant 100 per cent.” So how did it feel when Wood, who was born and bred in Gloucester, got the deal over the line? “It was quite special,” he admitted. “I’d grown up here, there was no way I was going to let it close if I could help it. It’s a massive part of my life, that’s why I did everything I could to keep it open.” Wood said that the previous owners Coleman and Basinghall Ltd, who still own the franchise, were very supportive in helping to conclude a deal. However, what many people didn’t know was that while there was all this drama going on in Wood’s professional life around this time, there was a fair bit of drama in his private life as well.

There There rremains emains p plenty lenty o off hard hard w work ork a ahead head “I’d just bought a new house,” said 38-year-old Wood, who lives with his p a r t n e r a n d t h re e c h i l d r e n . “ I completed on the house in Curlew Road in Gloucester on the Friday and then on the Monday I was told the golf club was closing! “The house needed renovating and needed a new roof. It wasn’t an easy time, it was very stressful.” Fortunately it has all turned out well but Wood knows there remains plenty of hard work ahead at the 18-hole par 72 course.

A relatively new two-tier driving range built by the previous owners is a big attraction and Wood has invested heavily in machinery to ensure that the course is in tip-top condition. The aim is to have 500 members and Wood also wants to strengthen the ladies’ section as well as the juniors – “That’s where I started,” he added. That process has already begun with the appointment of Nicky Lawrenson as the club’s new pro with part of her remit to look after the academy side of things. Wood himself was a seriously good golfer back in the day. “I started playing when I was 12,” he said. “My gramp got me into it . I s t a r te d p l a y i n g i n a f i e l d a n d t h e n I joined Painswick Golf Club before joining Gloucester when I was 16. I progressed from there.” That ’s a bit of an under-statement because by the time he was 20 he was turning pro. “I’d got to a handicap of one,” he explained. His talent has enabled him to play on an awful lot of courses over the years which makes him very well qualified to talk about his ‘home’ course. “Every hole at Gloucester is different ,” he said. “The front nine is re l a t i v e l y f l a t a n d t h e n o n t h e b a c k nine you’re on top of the hill. “There are great views at the top. You can see the cathedral and on Saturday afternoons you can hear the roar from Kingsholm. “It ’s a really challenging, good standard golf course.”
