I’ve really enjoyed the volunteering I’ve done on my gap year so far and w o u l d d e f i n i t e l y l i k e to d o m o r e . I currently volunteer for Beavers in Leckhampton and it’s so rewarding; it feels great to know I’ve helped them out . It also makes me feel really positive because all the beavers find everything so fun and exciting; their sense of fun rubs off on me. A collection I did for Marie Curie was also extremely worthwhile. I had to stand outside in the cold for two hours, but it was so worth the freezing hands. I was collecting money for a great cause, and it felt g o o d to g i ve s o m e t h i n g b a c k . How How ttoo ssurvive urvive eexam xam sseason eason It’s that time of year again. Whether you are suffering SATs, grimacing through GCSEs or alleviating A Level stress, being a parent in June is a role not to be underestimated. It takes tact, timing and tenacity in order to keep the household sane and on track during these troubling times. I have dug deep into my parenting archives to find the best advice for parents of teens at exam time, so I hope this hits the mark .
Declare Declare yyour our b bedroom edroom a ‘No ‘No Child Child Zone’! Zone’! Firstly, be prepared. I am not talking about revision timetables, stationery supplies or deadlines – those are your child’s responsibility. No, I am talking about doubling down on patience, committing to tongue-biting and d e c l a r i n g yo u r b e d r o o m a ‘ N o C h i l d Zone’ – let’s face it, everyone needs a safe space in the house during exam time and you are no different! Accept that life will take on a strange Twilight Zone appearance in which your teens will appear to sleep all day and stay up all night , eat sporadically and crave Ben ‘n’ Jerry’s Funky Monkey Ice Cream by the bucket load.

Remember, Remember, tthere here iiss llife ife a fter e xam sseason eason after exam Finally, there are the colouring books; again for you, not them. This is all about you, dear reader! Treat yourself to a grown-up colouring book and some coloured pencils, pour a glass of Zinfandel and pop a meditation track on your iPod. Put your earphones in and they won’t dare disturb your Zen state, leaving you so blissed-out you will ‘forget’ to check on them and never discover that , rather than doing any revision whatsoever, your teenager is mainlining ‘Riverdale’ or ‘Pretty Little Liars’ again! This, my dear reader,, is how we survive exam stress! As for the kids, they have had years to prepare, and if they don’t know it now they never will. So give them a break and a hug, and remember,, there is life after exam season.

If you need something, look for recycled items, as this also does not require raw materials. Water bottles, notepads and carrier bags can all be bought recycled. The object is not to not buy anything, but to buy sensibly, and not to just buy for the sake of it. This is the “reduce” part of the frequently repeated “reduce, reuse, recycle” mantra, and it comes first for good reason. Reducing what you buy in the first place ensures that there isn’t as much that needs to be recycled or worse, put in landfill. Aside from saving money, this makes s u re t h a t yo u a r e n o t u s i n g u p unnecessary amounts of raw resources, which are being depleted everyday.

To many people, ticks seem to embody all that is nasty and unpleasant about external parasites; creepy little bugs that attach themselves aggressively to the skin and potentially spread other nasty diseases for good measure. Removing them generates even more excitement and anxiety. There are many suggested techniques for trying to detach the little blighters; I’ve heard of people trying to burn them off (please don’t try that) or smothering them in alcohol or Vaseline to suffocate them. Removing them with a tick remover is actually very easy but the thought of leaving the ‘mouth parts’ embedded in the skin leaves some people too scared to attempt removing them at home. Even identifying a tick causes some people problems. I had one pet owner bring their dog in after attempting to remove a tick from its tummy, complaining that every time they tried to pick it off the dog yelped. I had to explain to them that they had been trying to pick off their dog’s nipple!
H How ow m much uch o off a an na actual ctual p problem roblem a are re tticks? icks? So the question remains how much of an actual problem are ticks? Well, the question varies depending on where you live. In Australia we have Ixodes holocyclus – the paralysis tick , a genuinely lethal tick that causes a progressive and eventual complete paralysis of its host. If the tick isn’t found in time and removed it will certainly kill a dog or cat. Thankfully, we don’t have that particular nasty tick in Europe. However, tick-borne diseases can be an issue particularly on the continent . These are microscopic parasites, bacteria or viruses that the tick carries and infect a n i m a l s w i t h w h e n i t b i t e s a n d fe e d s . I n E u r o p e we g e t particularly worried about the bacterial infections of Ehrlichia and Borrelia (Lyme’s disease) and the blood parasite Babesia. We do however occasionally see cases in dogs that have returned from France and Spain. This leaves us with Borrelia, or as it is more commonly known, Lyme’s disease. This bacteria does exist in the UK and infection can cause fever, joint swelling, lameness and even kidney and brain damage. It is thankfully quite rare and mostly confined to specific areas of the country including the New Forest , Dartmoor, Exmoor and East Anglia. Avoiding infection is achieved by good tick prevention treatments, and removing a tick promptly prevents infections being transmitted. Using a topical tick treatment or monthly tablet will kill off ticks after they have attached, although they may still need to be physically removed. A cheap tick re m ove r to o l a n d a p p r o p r i a te t i c k p r eve n t a t i ve s c a n b e obtained from your local vet clinic, along with advice on which is most appropriate for your pet. Mind you, if ticks still really worry you, have a think about another parasite that spread the bubonic plague and killed up to 200 million people worldwide – the flea.

What is not quite so well-known is that one-time jockey Pete Jones named his house after the first ever winner he rode in National Hunt Racing , while his ex-jockey father Davy lived at a house in Cheltenham called Ridgeway, which was also named after his first ever winner. Pete Jones, now 77, lives at Rising Bell just outside Winchcombe with his wife Pam – the second house that he has lived in with that name. He is part of a very impressive racing family – one that is still very much involved with the sport today because his son Steve is a racing writer for The Sun newspaper – and you won’t be surprised to learn that Pete can remember Rising Bell’s win as if it were yesterday.. “It was at Fontwell Park on 9th

It was an age when there was no IPL , no Big Bash and no T20 Blast – in fact , the only scheduled 20 overs games in those days were organised by club cricketers looking for an excuse to have a midweek beer or two! But what made the first class era t h a t H i n k s p l a ye d i n i n t h e 8 0 s a n d early 90s such a standout period was the high quality of players that could be found in pretty much every county cricket team across the land. career which ended in the mid-70s. A life in racing, while by no means a dead cert, was always likely for Pete and his younger brother Thomas – known in the sport as Buck – because their dad Davy, who was widely referred to as DL Jones, was something of a trailblazer back in the day. Born in 1907, Davy ’ss interest in horses was sparked at an early age through the shire horses that were kept by his father, who was a haulier. It was an interest that never left him and he became a very good jockey both over jumps and on the Flat. He rode his first winner in the mid1920s – the aforementioned Ridgeway – won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1945, was one of the few jockeys to ride in both the Grand National and the Derby, and was still riding winners well into his 60s, including the Kenya Derby in 1970 when he was 63. Pete was pretty good, too, riding Fortina’ss Palace to victory in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham in March 1970. Full story online.

It was taken by The Local Answer in mid-April and shows him leaving a r u g b y f i e l d w i t h h i s s o n B e n a f te r t h e two of them had played 80 minutes of rugby together. “I’ve been hanging on for dear life to have a couple games with him,” laughed the one-time Gloucester second row who is now 43. “I’ve watched him play a lot and I’ve coached him a bit as well but I always wanted to play with him. This was the first time.” The opportunity came in an end-ofseason Cheltenham Combination Minor Cup – a game that Old Patesians 4ths won against Gloucestershire Police to book their place in the final. Young Ben, a pupil at Balcarras Sixth Form, turned 17 in February which meant he was eligible for senior rugby. And like his dad he plays in the second row. He can also play at six – he plays for Old Pats Colts – so how good is he? “He’s getting there,” said his dad. “It was a nice little day against the Police, it was good fun.” S o h ow d i d F i d l e r a n d F i d l e r w o r k together on the pitch? “He was running and I was walking,” laughed Fidler senior. “I don’t jump at the lineout either, so we just lifted him. I was shouting the orders and he was carrying them out!” That’s just as it should be, of course, and Ben couldn’t have had a better teacher than his dad who played toplevel club rugby for well over 10 years and also won two caps for England. There was always a good chance that Rob Fidler was going to be a mighty fine rugby player of course because his dad John was a colossus in Gloucester ’s second row from the early 70s through to the mid-80s, a period when he also played four times for England. “Nothing is ever guaranteed but obviously rugby is in the family,” said Fidler. “But if the path wasn’t paved, the old chap would have paved it for me!” A product of Cheltenham College, Fidler was clearly a very good schoolboy rugby player – he represented England

The beauty of the Wychwood Festival is the opportunities offered to lesser-known musicians who perform on the outer stages. Several students from the University of Gloucestershire have been booked to perform at the 2018 festival, including Indigo Haze who will be returning for a second year. The four-piece band are based in Cheltenham and will be playing tracks they’ve written themselves. The indie quartet say the opportunity to perform at a prestigious festival like Wychwood is great for their profile. “We played Wychwood last year and

A Avengers: vengers: IInfinity nfinity W War ar
Revolutionary R evolutionary Ride Ride by Lois Pryce
There’s been a lot of hype surrounding the new Avengers film. Since its premiere it has topped the UK box office, with glowing reviews from film critics and cinema goers. Featuring more superheroes than you can fit on a poster – Spider Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther, the Incredible Hulk and stars from Guardians of the Galaxy – all feature in this CGI epic. Over the course of its nearly threehour running time the film races along and builds towards a monumental battle between good and evil. The villain of the film is Josh Brolin’s Thanos, a kind of giant purple brute who is intent on acquiring the full set of infinity stones, with which he’d have the power to destroy the universe. ‘I have seen your motorbike and I think you have travelled to many countries. But I wonder have you been to my country? That is Iran... Please come to my city, Shiraz ’. This tantalising invitation left on her motorbike in London convinces Lois Pryce, t h e a u t h o r o f ‘ R evo l u t i o n a r y Ride’, that she must make this journey. She sets off alone on a 3,000 mile ride from the Turkish border to Shiraz . Her adventures are fascinating and give a real sense of Iran today. Imagine riding a motorbike in the compulsory hijab and a helmet! She meets people from all walks of life and her ride is peppered with incidents, some amusing and others terrifying. Kindness, hospitality and traditions combine with the stories we hear so much of in the UK; corruption, intimidation and the all-seeing eyes of the Revolutionary Guard. Full review online.

By the arrival of the 17th century, wild boar had been hunted to extinction. The population was given another chance between the 1990s and 2004, as some farm reared boar had escaped, and others had been illegally released near the Wye Valley. The two groups of boar mated, and today the population of the feral wild boar is now thriving at an estimated 1200 in the Forest of Dean alone.

A natural natural ‘‘June June d drop’ rop’ In June there is a natural ‘June drop’ when lots of little fruits will fall, but if there are still lots on the tree you can remove them yourself. You need to leave about 10cm between dessert apples and pears, leaving one or two fruits per cluster. Cooking apples will need one fruit every 20cm or so, and plums about every 7cm. Use it as a chance to remove fruit that is already badly shaped, or damaged. The Local Answer

I would also like to thank the Dwyer Group, who have also been such a huge support and provided me with the guidance and infrastructure to keep the business in a good healthy state.”
Drain Doctor Gloucestershire franchise manager, Ruth Ryder, was honoured with the President’s award by the Dwyer Group EU at their ceremony in Berlin in recognition of h e r o u t st a n d i n g d e d i c at i o n a n d resolve over the past year. She was praised for the exceptional resilience and determination to keep the business running effectively following some challenges both professionally and personally.

We have all had a difficult and sad time in recent months, with both my husband and our franchise owner, Nick Cousins, having passed away. This has made me all the more determined to hold both my family and the franchise together,

Pierre Jeannes, Vice-President of Operations for Drain Doctor, congratulated Ruth on her award, saying: “Ruth has been remarkable over the past few months to keep the franchise up and running despite all the encounters that she has come up against. No-one else I know could have coped as well as Ruth and we are proud that she is part of our Dwyer Group family. Not only is she a fantastic representation of Drain Doctor ’s values, but she still manages to keep the business operating so steadfastly. A big congratulations!”

B Big ig ffirm irm b bullies ullies Nobody likes a bully. These days they come in all shapes and sizes, not just the big guy in the playground or the teenage gang. There’s cyber and verbal bullying to cope with too, but Money Matters is most concerned with the subject of financial bullying. It’s not a new topic, but it shows no signs of letting up. It’s the big, bad company that doesn’t care whether or not you leave them; they’ll always find someone else to take your place and there’s nothing you can do about it.

My friend was recently told by one company that the terms were being extended from 60 to 90 days. He says he would be happy if they honoured 90 days because they haven’t ever done so thus far! This column has often documented the lack of p e r s o n a l c a re a n d a t t e n t i o n a f fo rd e d t o s m a l l businesses by the High Street banks. They would rather bow and scrape to the US tax authorities and their FATCA forms, that are completely unintelligible, than they would call up a small business proprietor to see if he or she needed any help with their business.

Have you seen these FATCA forms? They are allegedly to establish whether you have any ‘American blood’ in you in terms of business ownership. One simple q u e s t i o n o n a n e m a i l wo u l d s a ve h o u r s o f p a i n a n d stress, but do the banks consider the effect on small businesses of simply rolling these forms out ‘left, right and centre’? No, of course they don’t. It was interesting to read this month of the reasons behind the merger talks between Sainsbury’s and Asda. They are concerned that our shopping habits are changing away from the weekly ‘big shop’, partly due to online ordering, but also as a result of a return to more local shopping. Go on the British public – take a stance and let’s see if we can make the point to even more of these Big Firm bullies.
