S Staying taying ssafe afe in in the the summer summer sun sun Summer is here and most of us enjoy being outdoors, basking in the warmer weather. Sadly, the sun with its UVA and UVB rays is not always our friend. Skin cancer in its various forms is on the rise and the time it takes to get an appointment with a dermatologist can often be far too long. Good sun protection is vital all year, but especially in the summer months when so much more of our bodies are exposed to damaging rays.
Sun S un p protection rotection
I cannot praise highly enough the sun care range Ultrasun, which is made in Switzerland. It has sunscreen that caters to every need, from sports to swimming, or just going about your everyday routine. It is a once a day application, which very few other products are, and it also protects from over 95% of UVA rays, which are t h e o n e s t h a t c a u s e t he most damage. Children who have particularly vulnerable skin should have sunscreen applied first thing before leaving the house, giving peace of mind that they are protected all day until it is washed off. For men who often neglect sun protection, there is a very light sports spray version that is easily absorbed, especially if you have areas of skin with lots of hair (i.e. arms and legs). Do not forget bald spots, tops of ears and tips of noses – they all need protection. THE LOCAL ANSWER
Ultrasun might cost a little more but you don’t have to keep reapplying so it is cost efficient in the long-term. I always have their little lip protection stick in my bag, which is Factor 30 and brilliant on the lips as it protects and moisturises. It can also be gently patted around the eye area or any other unexpected exposed areas. Boots also has a good range, Soltan, which is a little less expensive and also a UVA five star. I tend to use their face Factor 30 in the winter as I find it nice and light. You will still get a tan wearing sunscreen, it just might take a little longer.
V Vitamin itamin D
People are often concerned that if they use sunscreen it will reduce their levels of essential vitamin D. Various new studies published in the British Journal TO ADVERTISE CALL
of Dermatology say this fear is unfounded. It is now claimed you do not need that much sun exposure to synthesise vitamin D, so forget this as an excuse!
Sun S un u umbrella mbrella
I recently heard about a sun umbrella from Solbari.co.uk, which costs just £30. It comes in two sizes and blocks out the sun’s harmful rays. It is made of a thicker fabric than a normal umbrella so is able to block out light.
Sunglasses S unglasses
Eye protection is imperative, but if like me you find sunscreen on your eyelids can sometimes cause irritation then good quality sunglasses are essential. There are so many fabulous sunglasses out there, which look amazing and give both UVA and UVB protection. If you find a wrap around design it gives confidence in knowing the sides and ‘crow’s feet’ area are being protected. Enjoy the lovely sunshine but don’t pay a price for it with sun damage. PAGE

Not N ot just just a pain pain in in the the neck neck I was recently involved in a car accident; luckily everyone involved walked away fine and all I suffered was whiplash and a slight concussion. But it doesn’t have to be as drastic as a car accident – a simple bump to the head can cause concussion, which is a mild traumatic brain injury that usually happens after a blow to the head. It can also occur with violent shaking and movement of the head or body. A concussion can show symptoms within minutes, but sometimes is only recognised in the days after the incident.

It usually only lasts up to a few days or weeks, though it sometimes needs emergency treatment and some people can have long-lasting problems. If you are diagnosed with concussion in hospital, you’ll be able to go home when any serious brain injury has been ruled out and you’re starting to feel better. Most people feel back to normal within a few days or weeks, and there are plenty of ways to help your recovery such as getting plenty of rest and taking paracetamol or ibuprofen if you have a headache. Avoid alcohol and contact sports for at least three weeks. Sometimes, such as in my personal experience, there can THE LOCAL ANSWER
be complications after a concussion. I started suffering from vertigo, which is something I have never experienced before. Scarily, my first experience of it happened whilst I was driving on a busy main road. My vision became blurry and the road in front of me was moving from side to side. I had a ringing in my ears and became flustered and pulled over to vomit. I remained at the side of the road for 20 minutes before feeling able to drive home.

Others believe the symptoms are related to psychological factors. In many cases, both physiological effects of brain trauma and emotional reactions to these effects play a role in the development of symptoms. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, diving into the dramatic arts can offer you a place to voice, explore character, movement and expression. You work in a group and observe the rules of ‘Have Fun’, ‘Fail Happy’ and ‘Be Encouraging’. And in play you find strengths and talents you never knew you had! Maybe you want to try something new, a new career or hobby, but perhaps you don’t feel ready to take the plunge. How many times have you looked back at your childhood; your likes and dislikes, hobbies and passions, to help you decide your next move? How many careers are based on a childhood ambition or dream? And how many of us are only now daring to bring those dreams to life? And that’s not including the junior section.” Those adult members certainly have lots of opportunity to improve their PBs come competition time because there are training sessions aplenty put on by the club throughout the week.
“We have a number of training locations,” continued Peter. “We have a group bike ride that meets every Saturday at Tesco on St Oswalds Road in Gloucester.” The ride caters for cyclists of all abilities because it is split into three groups, with the first group doing up to 80 miles, the second group around 60 miles, and the third group covering 40 to 50 miles. “We have a coached swim at the school in Brockworth on
Sunday,” added Peter. “It’s an hour long session where everyone is a competent swimmer, although some are county standard. “We also have open water sessions on a Tuesday evening at a variety of locations across the county, as well as another coached swimming session at GL1 on Wednesdays. “During the winter we have a coached running session from Escourt Road in Gloucester on Tuesdays. “On Thursdays we host a coached indoor bike session on static bikes at the junior school in Brockworth. “We also run less frequent events such as transition training and maintenance classes. And we also operate a buddying system so that novice or less experienced members can team up with more seasoned triathletes to get coaching and racing tips.” Full story online.

Diamond by name, Diamond by nature. Jamie Diamond is a cricket coach, a cricket player for Dumbeton in the West of England Premier League and a cricket fan, but even at the age of 22 it’s fair to say that he sees himself primarily as a coach, happy to help others improve rather than concentrate only on his own game. And he has a pretty impressive coaching portfolio too because he’s Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s head women’s and under-17s’ performance coach, full-time head cricket coach and sports graduate at the King’s School Gloucester as well as fielding coach (men's 1st XI) and head coach for women's cricket at Dumbleton.

Chris Dent may be Gloucestershire’s captain and a top opening batsman, but in many ways he’s just like everyone else because he loves the Cheltenham Cricket Festival. This year the Festival runs from Monday 15th July to Sunday 28th July and the 28-year-old Dent said: “It’s the most enjoyable 10 days of the season, it’s a real highlight, everyone loves it. “It’s hard work but there is a different feel to the Festival – there is always good crowds, a great atmosphere and the cricket is always good.” Chris Dent Dent is right on all three counts of course.
One of Hucclecote Harriers’ proud boasts is that they make running fun and they certainly live up to that claim. The club were formed only four years ago – their first run was on 31st March 2015 – but since then they have given lots of people the opportunity to pull on their trainers and go for a run. The club are very different from a lot of other clubs in as much as although they have officers such as a chairman and treasurer, they don’t have an official membership. “We meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm on Green Lane in Hucclecote,” said Adam Coates, one of the club’s handful of run leaders. Gloucester G loucester G Golf olf C Club lub ccaptain aptain Sean S ean D Dunne unne lloving oving his his new new role role Sean Dunne is three months into his year as captain of Gloucester Golf Club and he’s loving every minute of it. Not that he’s been a golfer all his life, far from it, because he took up the sport only 10 years ago. The recently turned 56-yearold was a very keen squash player before that, after playing a lot of rugby when he was at St Peter’s School. He took up squash in his-mid 20s because it was a sport that his wife Adele played, and the Gloucester born and bred Dunne, who lives in Tuffley, became a pretty good player, playing for both Gloucester Leisure Centre and Gloucester Civil Service. “I got involved and I got the bug,” he said. “I wanted to be the best I could be.” It was a sport he really enjoyed, so why did he give it up? “I injured my back and I needed to find something a little less explosive,” said the contracts manager. “My wife bought me a set of
Sean Dunne
golf clubs and some lessons and it’s all gone from there. Golf filled the gap.” Ask him which sport he prefers, golf or squash, and he hesitates before saying: “I’ve got to say golf now, although I like them both, they are both difficult to play. “Both require a lot of patience but I wish I’d taken up golf 20, 30, 40 years ago, I think it’s a fantastic game.” Dunne’s son Ryan is now having golf lessons and Dunne
senior said of the game he has been playing competitively for only eight years: “It’s an inner battle with yourself. Yes, you are playing someone else but you are trying to beat the course. It takes a lot of time and patience.” Dunne currently plays off 12 and continued: “I’ve gone from a 23 handicap. My goal is to be single figure handicapper but it’s very hard.” He’s got every chance of realising his ambition though because he plans to keep on playing for a good few years yet. The next few months will be busy, busy, busy for him both on and off the course, however, especially as he has set up a Captain’s Fund to mark his year in charge. “Rather than raise money for a charity, I wanted to do something for the club,” explained Dunne. “I want to freshen up the clubhouse, give it a new look. The support I am getting is fantastic. We are a members’ club and we are really on the up. I want to keep that vibe going.”

A sspecial pecial month month July is a special month for me, not only because it’s when I celebrate my birthday and those of my two daughters, but because it is when some of my favourite events take place. As someone who was born and brought up in Gloucester, the Carnival has always been part of my life. I remember when it started from The Lannett and crowds several people deep lined the streets along Parkend Road. Numerous floats took part, with Debenhams and the Co-op department stores battling it out year after year. After reaching its peak, the procession seemed to decline year on year as businesses concentrated on the day job rather than taking part. Finding a route that both takes in the city centre and allows large lorries to manoeuvre safely has been difficult. But in recent years, the event has started to flourish again with involvement from arts groups through the Carnival Arts Partnership and funding from the Arts Council. Floats still take part, but the growth has been in walking entries, bringing colour and music to the proceedings.

This year the carnival takes place slightly earlier on Saturday 13th July in the hope of encouraging more schools to take part before they break for the summer holidays. This also means the Bob Wilson’s Funfair will arrive sooner and the firework finale to the festival will take place on 27th July. The procession leaves the Westgate Car Park at 3.30pm. This year’s theme is ’Myths and Legends’. To take part contact info@marketinggloucester.co.uk or phone 01452 207020. I’m also pleased that the Gloucester Quays Food Festival makes a return this year. In 2018, works were taking place to Orchard Square (outside the Waterways Museum), taking out a huge chunk of the festival site. It makes its return this year from 26th-28th July and will include the visit of celebrity chefs such as ‘the other Phil Vickery’ (not the former rugby player!). It’s also Gloucester’s turn to host the historic Three Choirs Festival, which opens at the end of the month, so there’s plenty going on. Have a great summer and do support as many events in Gloucester as you can. @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

R Rhythm hythm and and Blues Blues Festival Festival rreturns eturns Café Rene will once again be hosting their Rhythm and Blues Festival this month. “We very much look forward to the Blues Festival,” said Jojo Roche who works at the Café. “It makes for an amazing atmosphere across the city and we are so proud to host such outstanding artists with such a high calibre of music.” The festival runs from Monday 29th July to Sunday 4th August, and, alongside the music, features a host of food and drink on offer. Jojo continued: “We get a fantastic response from visitors to the Blues Festival and always receive compliments on the hog roast, BBQ, range of beers and ciders, the line up and the friendly nature of all those attending and working the event.
Last year’s festival attracted huge crowds
“We see blues fans return year on year to enjoy the music, bringing family and friends to relax on the green for the duration of the festival!” This year’s line up includes artists and bands from all over the country. Returning as headliners will be Willie and the Bandits, as well as the Stevie Nimmo Trio and Irish singer Grainne Duffy.
FFilm ilm Review Review – Joe Joe K Kennett ennett Rocketman R ocketman
It’s easy to assume when going to see ‘Rocketman’ that it would be very similar to last year’s smash hit ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, but what director Dexter Fletcher brings to this Elton John biopic makes the film entirely different watching. The film follows John through a support group meeting, as he comes to terms with his addictions and recounts how he got to that stage. In this film, Taron Egerton again demonstrates his versatility as an actor, and he’s even got the singing voice to accompany it – his covers of John’s massive hits could convince you it was Elton singing them himself. John has said himself that the film caused him to sob, something I doubt that’s uncommon with all audiences watching this film. The emotion is raw, unforgiving, and at times, testing to watch. Full review online.
Jojo said: “We have artists spanning the rhythm and blues genre on the line up, be that modern and contemporary, traditional blues to rockin’ blues, jug band blues and Americana with strong soulful vocals, there really is something for everyone and possibly something new to experience.” The festival is free to enter, with the Café raising funds for Gloucestershire children’s charity the James Hopkins Trust. Jojo added: “We have been raising funds for our chosen charity, the James Hopkins Trust, for over five years. “It really is an honour to support them and their amazing work with severely disabled children, and the fantastic vital support given to their families.” Full story online.

by Rose Tremain This short book traces Rose Tremain’s childhood and youth. She was born in 1943 to a mother who seemed unable to love either of her daughters. Denied the chance to go to Oxford University, she is instead packed off to a finishing school in Switzerland. Her relationship with her mother is difficult and cold, but she has Nan, Vera Sturt, who teaches her about love and being loved. This is not a sad book, although there are heart wrenching moments. These are indeed ‘Scenes from a Vanished Life’ of the 50s and 60s, but there are fascinating insights into Tremain’s writing life, her meeting with the Poet Laureate and references to scenes in her novels taken from her early life. But Rain or Shine Theatre Company – as their name suggests – perform in any and all weather conditions. Founded 21 years ago by husband and wife Ken and Jayne Meekings, the Gloucester-based company tours all over the country each summer, to indoor and outdoor venues. “We love to perform at community venues such as pub gardens, schools and village hall gardens in order to help raise funds for local charities. This year we’re even performing on two cricket pitches,” said Ken. “We also visit historic loca-

tions across the country such as Witley Court, Llanthony Priory and Hailes Abbey. We enjoy the variety.” Rain or Shine’s 2019 summer tour sees a cast of seven professional actors performing the Shakespeare classic comedy ‘As You Like It’. The tour began in early June,
and over the course of the summer months will see the company perform nearly 60 shows, including 17 in Gloucestershire alone. When first starting out, the company’s aim was to “bring classical professional theatre into the heart of local communities at an affordable price”, and this is something Ken and Jayne still stand by. He said: “We want our shows to be for the whole family and be really accessible. “I think youngsters get a lot out of being able to come and see a performance, I’d say we’re perfect for ages six or seven and above including parents and grandparents.” For more information on Rain or Shine and the full list of dates for ‘As You Like It’, visit www.rainorshine.co.uk Full story online.
N New ew festival festival ffor or m music usic llovers overs For music lovers, a festival is something to be experienced and enjoyed for a weekend or a few days. But one Gloucester resident has taken her love to the next level, and organised her very own festival, aptly called ‘For the Love of Music Festival’. “I’ve always had an inkling in the back of my mind that I want to do something like this,” said Bonnie Eastmond, the woman behind it all. “It just seemed like the perfect time in my life to get it going.” Bonnie, who was born in Cheltenham, has spent years experiencing the music scene in Gloucester and Bristol. Her passion for music is the driving force behind the festival, with many of the crew helping to organise and bands perfor-

ming being friends she has made over the years. “I’m just the girl whose dream it is to hold a festival,” she continued. “I’ve got a really amazing, helpful team around me doing the technical bits. “In August of last year my friend Ralph, who’s bar manager of All Blues Rugby Club, offered
their site as a venue. The council have been really kind and helpful too.” The festival’s line up features artists of all different genres from all over the country. “We’ve got a stage for bands, an acoustic open mic stage, and an electronic and dance stage,” said Bonnie. “My music taste is really eclectic and we had around 500 applications to perform, so getting to listen to all these different bands was amazing.” The festival takes place from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July and is not-for-profit, with funds raised going to a range of causes inc lud ing h ome less cha riti es i n Bristol and Gloucester, and Refugee Community Kitchen. Gardening G ardening tips tips tto oh help elp yyou ou in in your your new new home home This time of year many people are thinking of moving house, buying their first home, or moving into their first rented property. If you are moving house and you have plants in the garden that have sentimental value – gifts from friends or relatives – either take cuttings, or move them into pots before you show people around so that they can see what you will be taking with you. If you are organised you can do this months before!
Differing D iffering h heights eights w will ill add a dd iinterest nterest Buying a new house? You may well have a garden which is basically grass surrounded by fences. It is likely that the soil will be shallow – a bit of top soil covering builders’ rubble – so you must improve it before deciding to plant. Creating raised beds to plant in is one way of getting around this poor soil, and the differing heights will also add interest to the garden.

Think carefully before covering fences with climbers, as this makes fence maintenance difficult. Sometimes it is better to plant taller shrubs in front of the fence so you can still get behind to paint. Perhaps try Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ or Ceanothus ‘Puget Blue’, which are both evergreen and add interest. The Ceanothus is smothered with blue flowers from April to June if it is planted in a sheltered position in full sun, and the Photinia has lovely new red leaves in spring. If you are renting a property you will find it more cost effective to keep your planting to containers so that you can take them with you when you move on. You can find all sorts of weird and wonderful pots, TO ADVERTISE CALL

Shrubs, grasses and even trees can be planted into pots but ensure you keep them watered and fed, as they will rely totally on you for their well-being. Now for your tasks to do this month. If you have grown early potatoes they should be ready to lift. Keep sowing ‘cut and come again’ varieties of lettuce in small batches in old mushroom boxes or similar. They need to be placed out of the hot sun and kept moist but not soaking. PAGE

B Beautiful eautiful butterflies butterflies It is that beautiful time of year again where you will see many different species of butterflies when you step outside. Butterflies are cold-blooded, so you will often see them resting in a sunny spot with their wings open. They do this to soak up the sun, as the warmer the butterfly is the more efficient their metabolism will be. Butterflies don’t have any chewing mouthparts; they eat by using their proboscis. This is a straw-like structure which they use to drink up nectar. They also drink from puddles and ponds to get nutrients from the salt. When the proboscis is not in use, it is coiled up like a garden hose. The small tortoiseshell butterfly is widespread throughout Britain and Ireland, and they have a lifespan of about one year. Males and females look the same, but the females can be a few millimetres bigger than the males.

with the females laying their eggs on tender stinging nettles in batches of 60 to 100. Caterpillars will hatch around 10 days later and will eat the stinging nettles. It takes about 21 days for the caterpillar to become fully grown. The chrysalis stage lasts approximately 12 days, and then an adult butterfly emerges.
Hibernation H ibernation Sometimes batches of eggs are laid later in the year, so these butterflies will hibernate during the winter. Hibernation starts in late September, and dark spots are often favoured, like a garden shed or dark and unused rooms in buildings. It is a good idea to check unused rooms in your home or business during the winter to look for any hibernating butterflies. How H ow y you ou can can h help elp You can attract butterflies to your garden by planting flowers they will love. Some examples are English lavender, marjoram, verbena, hebe and coneflower (Echinacea). These can be grown in the ground or in pots, which is especially helpful if you don’t have a garden, as you can use a window flower box. Fruit is also a favourite for butterflies. Why not involve the children and make a butterfly feeder? All you will need is a paper plate or anything you can hang with string. You can put down kiwi, oranges, peaches, strawberries and watermelon, to name a few. Another helpful idea is to put a banana in the freezer and leave it out to thaw on the plate, as they enjoy overripe and mushy fruits. How many butterflies will you spot this summer? PAGE

Say Say it it with with flowers flowers I am always inspired by my visits to the Chelsea Flower Show and this year was no exception. It made me reflect on how flowers always bring colour, life and a beautiful scent to a room and really make a house feel alive. It is so important to remain connected to the natural world and to be reminded of the pleasures the simple things in life bring. With sunnier days and warmer weather upon us why not bring a bit of summer inside?
A ssummer ummer g garden arden ffeel eel At this time of the year there is an abundance of English flowers available, and they are not expensive. If you are lucky enough to have your own garden, just gather a bunch of whatever is in bloom. You can always pick up a bunch with your weekly supermarket shop or even better, drop by your local florists. If you’re really organised, you can arrange to have them delivered to your door. There are local and national businesses
that can deliver ad hoc or as a regular subscription to suit your requirements.
Flowers F lowers with with style style For real impact I prefer single bloom bunches in one colour, or try toning colours for a contemporary country look. Aim to reflect your personal style and match the col ours of th e other accessories in your room. And do make sure your vase reflects the style of your arrangement. There are lots of interesting shapes and sizes around at the moment. If you want to keep it simple, I love masses of white hydrangeas bunched together in a glass bowl or cube, or planted in willow baskets – they make a real style statement.
The T he rrules ules o off a arranging rranging Column shaped vases or those with narrow necks work best for holding stems together. Cut flowers to a similar height, fill the vase with your chosen foliage then, taking the longer stemmed varieties, such as delphiniums, add the flowers to
the vase by variety. Turn the vase as you go until you create an even shaped arrangement. For other vase shapes it’s best to make a hand tied bunch or bouquet before filling the vase. I recommend attending a class to learn how to do this properly.
Go G o vintage vintage An easier approach is to go for a more relaxed look. Just take a simple no-fuss bunch of seasonal flowers and some foliage and loosely arrange them in a jug. Single stems or little bunches of mixed flowers can also look really effective arranged individually in jam jars or old milk bottles. I often find little vintage pots and vases in charity shops, perfect for side tables or arranged along a dinner table.
Be B eb bold old Terence Conran once described flowers as “the quintessential finishing touch” to a home. Tune in with the current maximalist trend and create something really amazing. For maximum impact go for abundance. Why not channel your inner florist and be adventurous and creative. What could be more relaxing and enjoyable! THE LOCAL ANSWER

Most of us would say that we work to live, but there are a sad few of us, he says trying to avoid the mirror, who are accused of the opposite. Is work a means to an end or is it the end itself? It isn’t as straightforward an answer as you might want it to be. There is a growing feeling in the service industry that standards need to be set very high and 24/7 availability through modern communication devices does nothing to lower that bar. It depends a lot on your status, of course. Those of us who are self-employed live or fall in financial terms by the profits we make from the hours we work. So how do we avoid the long working hours that are all too commonplace amongst the country’s entrepreneurs? Understanding the effect has to be the place to start. There are no medals given out simply because you work incredibly long hours. Train your clients/customers to understand that you need some time to yourself and that, whilst they can send you an email at a weekend, they should not expect a response until the new working week. It’s unlikely they will take their business somewhere else just because you didn’t respond to them on a Sunday morning.

One charity with whom we have worked recently have an automated response if you send an email out of office hours, explaining that it is unhealthy for their staff to be reading it at that time and therefore you won’t get an immediate reply. It then suggests that the sender should review his/her working practices to avoid having to send emails at that time of day. Maybe there is something to be learned from this approach? Over 50% of working days lost to illness last year were a result of work-related stress. Perhaps that says it all? Maybe we all need to find a way of slowing the world down before it’s too late?
