Being Being human... human... With the pressures of modern life bearing down on us daily and the grind of politics, the economy, dealing with difficult people at work or challenging situations in our lives, it is easy to forget to look after ourselves. Mental health, depression and suicide are issues that people are fighting every day. As a man, I know how hard it is to express emotions and be vulnerable, but through intentional action and behaviour changes, we can all become significantly better human beings. In order to maximise our potential, enrich our lives and the lives of others, we need to take care of the four Fs:
Family F amily
How you manage, nurture, restore and maintain your key relationships with loved ones and close friends plays a huge role in your emotional wellbeing.
Fitness F itness
Taking care of your body (diet and exercise) and emotional health significantly benefits your life and well-being.
Faith F aith
Look after your mental health,
THE LOCAL ANSWER
beliefs, values, spirituality and religion, as these provide you with inner strength.
Finance F inance
Work, business, studies, managing your money and your career all impact your life and the lives of your dependants. While these four areas have distinct and very specific considerations, they all require you to be intentional in your action, behaviour or thoughts. They say it takes 21 days to create new habits or make behavioural changes ‘stick’. What ‘they’ forget to tell you, is that it also takes discipline, inner strength, resilience and a desire or willingness to change in the first instance. I love the saying “be the change you wish to see in the world”. It is both a call to action as much as it is a challenge. In order to change the world or even just our own personal environment, we need to change ourselves first and this can only happen through the development of healthy, positive habits and behaviours. Think about habits you can change or develop which will
empower you to create your best work, be your best self and help others. Here are some wellness habits to empower you: • Regular journaling, meditating or praying enables you to engage with your inner self at a deeper level to reflect, learn and continuously grow. • Adopt healthy lifestyle habits: good nutrition, hydration, sleep, regular exercise, healthy work-life balance. • Prioritise your mental health and emotional well-being. There are some great books and podcasts in this area, so it’s worth doing your homework and finding someone whose style resonates with you. Many of you will already have a powerful wellness ‘routine’ or daily habits, which will have an enormous impact on your life and help you to positively impact the lives of your significant others. Whatever your preferred medium – books, podcasts, oneto-one work with a coach or mentor, your temple, mosque, synagogue, church, sport or social club, local pub, etc. – it is vital that you find a network to support, challenge and inspire you to be your best self, and an inspiration and source of strength to others.

High H igh sstreet treet budget budget b brides rides Latest statistics show the average wedding now costs a whopping £32,000, and the average dress costs £1,200! However, not everyone chooses to spend such a figure on one day, or could even dream of having a wedding budget that large. Our ever-evolving high street has cleverly recognised this and many of our well-known shops now cater for all things bridal for a fraction of the price; wedding dresses, shoes, accessories, as well as suits for the groom and his best men.
The The dress dress
A popular website called everythingfivepounds.com had a long white gown with a shawl at the beginning of the season for, you guessed it, £5! And no, I am not joking. This might not be the site for you, but if you have lots of bridesmaids to cater for, why not check it out? From maxi dresses to mini dresses, in all styles, sizes and colours, there is quite a good selection to be found. Those brides marrying for the second time, who perhaps spent a lot of money the first time round, may wish to have a more laid back wedding and be a little less frivolous with their wedding purchases. There are also couples who would prefer to spend more money on their honeymoon than the wedding day itself. Luckily, brands are aware of this and delivering options for smaller budgets. For example, Dorothy Perkins had a really lovely bridal dress for the reasonable sum of £110, Little Mistress had one for £85, and THE LOCAL ANSWER
Chi Chi London were selling a dress for only £75. The point is not to overlook the high street, as they are all chasing a slice of this lucrative market.
Accessories Accessories
These can make a huge difference to any outfit and again the high street offers some lovely items. Primark has a big range from bags to shoes to head pieces, which will leave you lots of cash to splash elsewhere (or save for a rainy day). Accessorize, found on most high streets, has cute little wedding sparkly bags, as well as a great choice of hair ornaments, many of which can be re-used on other occasions.
Shoes Shoes
Bridal shops very often charge a lot extra for bridal shoes, which is understandable as they can cost more to manufacture. We all know if our feet are comfortable, as it shows on our faces, and generally you will be on your feet for a very long TO ADVERTISE CALL
period of time on your wedding day, so sore feet could potentially ruin what should be a happy day. Depending on the gown you choose, often you just get a peek of the shoes. If you have a pair you like that goes with your chosen outfit, why not buy shoe accessories instead of a brand new pair? They make any shoe stand out and look different. I have an ancient pair of silver shoes and purchased a fabulous pair of pearl clips from Fiftyplus.co.uk. They always get lots of compliments, but more importantly I am comfortable. Check out Rainbowclub.co.uk, Prettypinktoes.co.uk or Dune. Remember, it’s only one day. If you’ve dreamed about and planned your wedding from a young age and you want to splash the cash, go for it. But if you’re working to a tighter budget or can’t justify the top range prices, the high street may just be the answer. Most importantly, enjoy your special day. PAGE

Smile S mile ssmart mart We all want that perfect white smile, yet nearly a third of parents in the UK wait until their children have all their milk teeth before taking them to the dentist for the first time. Shocking statistics about children as young as three needing to have teeth removed due to decay have brought children’s dental health to the public’s attention. It is recommended that a child should be taken to the dentist when their first tooth has cut through or when they are one (whichever comes first). This is because baby (milk) teeth are essential for speech, the structure of the face and holding space for the adult teeth to erupt into. If there is decay it can lead to infection, discomfort and could potentially damage the permanent teeth below. Children who have toothache or who need treatment may have pain, infections and difficulties with eating, sleeping and socialising. They may have to be absent from school and parents may also have to take time off work to take their

Poor, high sugar-based diets in children from weaning age can be a contributing factor to tooth decay at such a young age, along with inappropriate brushing and care. Therefore, encouraging healthy eating habits is also vital. Another big problem is that over half of UK parents stop helping their children brush their teeth too early and do not monitor their brushing habits. A quarter of five-year olds have tooth decay with an average of 3-4 teeth affected, which is unacceptable. In order to stop

Embracing E mbracing vvulnerability ulnerability I was watching Brene Brown on the Netflix special ‘The Call to Courage’ recently, as she was talking about vulnerability and courage, and I was pondering the ways in which we can teach these most valuable qualities to our children. In the seminar, Brene asks ‘’Who here was raised to be brave, courageous?’’ and the whole audience raise their hands; evidently everyone wants their kids to grow up with a willingness to try new things and live a full life. But when she asked “Who here grew up believing that ‘vulnerability’ meant ‘weakness’?” the very same people raised their hands and this was somehow shocking for everyone to realise.
IIn no order rder to to be be b brave, rave, you you need n eed tto o be be v vulnerable ulnerable Brene asserts that vulnerability and courage are bedfellows on the scale of ‘how to be human’ and that we cannot have one without the other. In order to be brave, you need to be vulnerable; in order to turn up with courage you must be willing to fail, and actually welcome failure as a vital part of any process. So as we raise our children, are we able to support them going forward? Can we present them with a willingness to try and fail, to have a go and take part, and actually mean it? I know we say these things; that it’s not the winning that matters but the taking part, but we also send out an THE LOCAL ANSWER
almost subliminal message that we must, at all costs avoid failure, getting hurt, being humiliated, and never allow others to ‘disrespect us’! The thing is, if we are sharing a constant message of ‘don’t put your head above the parapet – it might get shot at’, as we see all too often across social media, young people will struggle to embrace their own vulnerability and honour their potential.
Many Many young young people people llive ive in in fear fear of of humiliation humiliation Thus, so many young people grow up thinking being humiliated is the most painful thing they can possibly experience, and they live in constant fear of it – creating a culture of violence and even death amongst young people at an ever higher level. We must We must be be as as willing willing to to ffail ail a ass we we are are tto o succeed succeed The only way we can break this cycle is to embrace our own vulnerability and be open and honest about managing our own courage in situations where we may face failure or humiliation. When we enter a relationship, reach out or dare to try something new, we must be as willing to fail as we are to succeed. To do this we need to love ourselves unconditionally, not because we are beautiful or strong, or wealthy or accomplished, but simply because we are! By practicing self love, and honouring ourselves no matter how we turn up in life, we will soon see a generation who dare greatly and live with courage, passion and empathy. And that can’t be a bad thing, can it? PAGE

Newly-revitalised Newly-revitalised Northern Ireland Ireland Northern I lived in ‘Norn Iron’ during the 1960s and 1970s. They weren’t happy times, with the Troubles overlaid on the stunningly beautiful province that, almost overnight, went from being among the world’s safest places to, well, you know the rest... After leaving Ulster, I rarely returned for decades. But when we spent a week there recently, what a difference I discovered.

Where the Troubles once played out, there is new vitality and open-top bus tours to sights as diverse as Belfast’s copper-domed City Hall and the iconic murals depicting Ulster’s oh-so-complicated history on each side of the city’s peace line. Motoring M otoring with w ith T Toby oby A Aiken iken
Driving D riving has has never never been been cheaper cheaper Probably… and I think I can prove it using maths (hopefully). My dad, like many people his age, is always going on about the cars he bought in his ‘youth’ costing ten or twelve pounds – twenty quid at most – and how it was so much cheaper to drive back then compared to ‘modern’ times. But I’ve been thinking about this and did some simple calculations, and it simply wasn’t.
You Y ou can’t can’t just just look look att fuel a fuel ccosts osts Let’s look at the facts. Yes, in 1968 petrol was much, much cheaper. In fact, it cost the equivalent of 22p a gallon. A gallon; not a litre. The average price at the pumps today is around £5.40 a gallon. But these aren’t comparable – not in those simple terms. To get a real idea, you can’t just look at fuel costs. A good graduate salary in 1968 might have been around £1,100 a year. Today, a graduate can hope or, if they’re lucky, expect to earn around £23,000 a year.
THE LOCAL ANSWER
So does that mean motoring was cheaper then or now? If a graduate salary today is £23,000 compared to £1,100, then a day’s pay would be roughly £63 compared to £3 in 1968. So a gallon of fuel in 1968 would set you back 7.3% of your daily wage. Today it would cost 8.5%. In this case, my Dad was right – driving today is more expensive.
TO ADVERTISE CALL
Wrong. Plus, I wasn’t going to give in that easily!
The T he difference difference iin n fuel fuel economy economy You also really have to look at the difference in fuel economy between then and now, for a fair and reasonable comparison. A typical medium family car back in my father’s younger years might average 23mpg if you were lucky. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to get double that or even more. Let’s say 45mpg to be on the safe side. So if you spent 10% of your daily earnings on petrol, in 1968 you could travel 31 miles. Today, you could go 52 miles – that’s 67% further. If your daily commute is a 40 mile round trip, in 1968 you would have spent almost 13% of your day’s pay on fuel. Today, you would spend less than 8%. So there you have it – things weren’t always better in the past. I know we like to complain about the cost of fuel but, in truth, it’s never been cheaper. PAGE

Should I be be brushing brushing Should my cat’s cat’s teeth? teeth? my Yo ou may be surprised to know that it is possible to train some cats to allow you to brush their teeth. I can hear you scoffing as I am writing this. But the point is that dental disease is incredibly common, often neglected and the cause of oral pain, periodontal disease and other health issues such as kidney and heart disease. It is thought that 85% of cats over the age of three years will have some form of dental disease. Plaque initially forms where bacteria are allowed to form a film on the surface of the teeth. That plaque will eventually harden to form calculus and tartar – a mineralised deposit stuck to the surface of the tooth. By that stage gingivitis will have already started and the gum will start to recede, exposing the periodontal ligament which anchors the tooth into its socket. As this ligament weakens, the integrity of the tooth starts to suffer and once the tooth root is exposed to bacteria there is little that can be done other than extracting the diseased tooth under a general anaesthetic. Cats have a thin layer of enamel on the surface of their teeth and are particularly prone to tooth decay. We often see flakes of enamel breaking away, exposing the sensitive tooth pulp. Once the enamel is damaged, the tooth inevitably continues to deteriorate, slowly breaking apart until only broken roots are left behind, causing pain and acting as a source of bacterial infection. This results in bacteria entering the blood stream and causing damage to kidney and heart tissue.
Look L ook a after fter y your our ccat’s at’s tteeth eeth To look after your cat’s teeth, start by getting into the habit of examining their gums and teeth, particularly at the back of the mouth. Are the teeth white and clean or discoloured and covered in tartar? Are the gums pink and healthy or sore, inflamed and bleeding? What sort of food do you feed your cat? Some dry food diets are designed to clean the surface of the teeth as your cat bites into them. You can also get cat dental chews and chew toys to mechanically scrape and clean plaque off the teeth. It is possible to train many cats to tolerate teeth cleaning, oral mouth wash gels or actual tooth brushing. Start slowly with gentle teeth wiping and rubbing, and build up to more vigorous brushing over many weeks. Look after your cat’s mouth and they’ll thank you for it in the longterm!

They have produced not only water for drinking and farming, but also a route of transport for trade and businesses to access towns and cities. Running straight through the heart of Gloucestershire is Great Britain’s longest river, the River Severn at 220 miles long. The famous Severn bore pushes its way up the river on various dates throughout the year, which many spectators gather together to see. Our rivers here in the UK are home to a vast variety of species, each playing its own part in the circle of life and its ecosystem. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of pollution finding its way into our river systems, which undoubtedly causes harm to several animals that reside there. What could you spot down by the river?

Olivia Rook is one of those youngsters who is looking forward to the summer more than most, although she won’t be one of those out partying when the exams are over. Keen Keen cyclist cyclist Martin Martin Cain Cain is is one one of the the main main men men at at Cheltenham Cheltenham of If something needs to be done Martin Cain is one of those people who is the first to put up his hand. In terms of his involvement in sport he’s done it all his life and the current beneficiaries of his can-do attitude are Cheltenham and County Cycling Club. He took over as interim chairman when Robin Mainwaring stood down in February – it’s a post he will hold at least until the club’s AGM in November – and he is also the club’s race captain. That means he is a pretty major player at a club that he only got involved with some four or five years ago. His role as race captain is certainly full on, organising as he does a regional category road race involving 60 riders who are all pretty decent. It is a 60-mile race involving category 2, 3 or 4 riders and last year’s race was staged at Bourton-on-the-Water. This year’s race will be at Winchcombe in July and Martin said: “It’s a big regional event and we stop the traffic. There are motorcycle riders at the front of the peloton and there are processional cars with officials at the back, it’s quite spectacular. “It is an Open event for individuals and teams and there are points for places with the competitors aiming to reach national standard.” Martin, who lives in Bishop’s Cleeve with his wife Michelle, has been a keen cyclist for many years. “I’ve done a lot of mountain bike riding,” the 54-year-old said, “but I’ve done more and more road riding recently.” He gets plenty of opportunity to pursue those pastimes at his club, of course, a club which also caters for those who enjoy cyclo-cross, time trials and endurance riding.
Martin Cain loves getting out and about on his bicycle
“We’re one of the biggest clubs in the country,” said Martin with some pride. And with people like Martin, a chartered engineer, involved, the club can only continue getting bigger and better. “I’m passionate about people contributing,” he said. “I have always been happy to volunteer and the more volunteers the better. “I like being involved. When one of my lads was playing rugby in the junior section at Cheltenham Tigers I helped coach his team.” Martin, originally from Bolton – he still has quite a strong Lancashire accent – also managed a football team before he moved to glorious Gloucestershire, and as far as his cycling is concerned he couldn’t have chosen a better place to live. “I love cycling around the Cotswolds, whether I’m on my own or with members of the club,” he enthused. “It is a wonderful part of the country, you see little country lanes and tiny villages that you would never normally see.” Martin isn’t alone in enjoying the freedom that cycling brings, of course, and he reckons more and more people will be getting on their bikes in years to come. “You see more and more
electric bikes and they are making cycling accessible to people who wouldn’t normally ride,” he said. “They still have to pedal but they are having a go because they are getting some assistance.” Martin is also keen to see more women take up the sport. “British Cycling is trying to promote a million new women into cycling regularly,” he said. “We would like to grow our ladies’ membership at Cheltenham, and have a ladies’ captain, Sally Reid, who is an exnational standard mountain bike champion and is passionate about supporting women cycling. “Sally has introduced ladies’ coaching sessions to help grow confidence and riding abilities for ladies and works in conjunction with other cycling clubs in the area.“ Sally Reid is just one of a good number of people who do so much for the club and Martin is happy to continue as chairman after November if no-one else comes forward. He’s also happy to continue in his position as race captain for a while longer. “I’ll train someone up for a year and then they can take over,” he said. Martin Cain is a true club man!

L Local ocal author author returns returns with with latest latest thriller thriller Amanda Reynolds has had a successful few years as an author. Her first novel ‘Close To Me’ was published in 2017 and received rave reviews, reaching the iTunes and Kindle bestsellers lists. Last year’s release ‘Lying To You’ also reached the Kindle Top 100. This summer Amanda returns with her latest psychological thriller ‘The Hidden Wife’. “It’s about a famous author whose wife goes missing,” she explained. “Suspicion falls on him and as a high profile, philanthropic character, the local newspaper cover the story. The strapline is ‘Did she really walk out on their marriage? Or did he make her disappear?’” Amanda, originally from Reading, has lived near Cheltenham for 25 years now, and says the

Cotswold villages and landscapes she loves to explore provide heaps of inspiration. “I love the Cotswolds,” she continued. “It’s a small leap in imagination because the stories are based so close to home. “I like to write about ordinary people in extraordinary situations.”
Film Film Review Review – Joe Joe K Kennett ennett Avengers: A vengers: Endgame Endgame
Quickly becoming the highestgrossing movie of all time, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is a celebration and culmination of the past decade of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Directed by the awardwinning Russo brothers Joe and Anthony, ‘Endgame’ is a send-off for the past 21 films in the Infinity Saga. With a lengthy three-hour run time, this film is a fast-paced action, and if anything, I’m sure fans will agree that it could almost have gone on for longer. There’s a perfect blend of comedy, drama and heartfelt moments throughout the course of the film, all culminating in a whopper of an ending. It’s a cathartic experience as we see characters from all corners of the MCU come together in their final effort to defeat Thanos. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the perfect ending to what has been a truly remarkable era of cinema. Full review online.
‘The Hidden Wife’ will also be based in the Cotswolds, and while Amanda says she doesn’t name specific villages, readers local to the area should be especially familiar with the locations she describes. All three of Amanda’s novels are psychological thrillers – “It’s a genre that lends itself to real life and the kind of books I like to read,” she says. And the research for writing these characters and stories is something Amanda believes is very important. “For this book I actually went into police headquarters and spoke to the murder investigations team. “I also visited newspapers and spoke to journalists who have covered stories of missing people, the research was very thorough.” Full story online.

by Julian Barnes “Would you rather love the more, and suffer the more; or love the less, and suffer the less?” So starts Julian Barnes’ latest novel ‘The Only Story’. The story is one of a love affair between a nineteen year old boy and a forty eight year old woman which starts in the long university summer vacation, defying the social conventions of the Surrey village in which they both live. Barnes writes in the first person, giving a very vivid account of the relationship, which many believe to be autobiographical. Paul never gives up on Susan but the demands on his side of the relationship take their toll and become overwhelming. There is humour and dry wit but Barnes – writing with such great intensity – produces a heart wrenching and thought provoking read. Full review online.

Cheltenham C heltenham Open Open Studios Studios art art trail trail begins begins The Cheltenham Open Studios biennial art event returns this month, with artists from in and around the town exhibiting their work. Beginning at Montpellier Park, the trail will feature venues all around Cheltenham, from The Wilson Art Gallery and Chapel Arts, to the University of Gloucestershire and artists’ homes and studios. “We’ve got a real range of diverse locations,” said Project Manager, Niki Whitfield. “The premise of Open Studios is inclusivity – we have got members who do art for fun, for a living, even as a way to help with mental health.” The Cheltenham Open Studios is a community of artists and art groups in Cheltenham and the surrounding areas.
View from Sacromonte by Alan Williams
“It’s a big community that feeds into the artistic heritage of the town,” said Niki. “We’ve got 125 members, which include local arts associations, colleges and art therapy groups, so in terms of individual artists, that adds up to a lot more.” The Open Studios showcase gives these artists the chance to
show their work to the general public, as well as the opportunity to meet other members, collaborate and nurture their talents. With communities all over the country, the Open Studios are, as Niki puts it, “a national movement”. “Cheltenham and nearby places like Stroud and the Forest of Dean have a great artistic heritage,” continued Niki. “However, Cheltenham does not have many gallery spaces compared to some other towns and cities. “This is why the Open Studios are so important for local artists to get their work out there.” The Cheltenham Open Studios runs from Saturday 8th June to Sunday 16th June. Be Be wary war y of of weed weed killers killers The safety of glyphosate weed killers is being called into question by some scientific studies as being carcinogenic and harmful to bees. I am not usually swayed easily into ‘scare stories’ but I have noticed the reduction in the flying insect population, and when that is confirmed by other studies and then linked to glyphosate it doesn’t seem a risk worth taking.
How d How do oy you ou ttackle ackle pernicious p ernicious w weeds? eeds? However, if weed killers are not used, it leaves one with a problem of how to tackle bindweed and other pernicious weeds. Basically, you’re left with the option of either digging out weeds, or covering the ground with old carpet or some such thing which can be left undisturbed for a year or more. This is only useful if all the other plants are removed first. It could be argued that if all the safety instructions on the product are followed it is fine. Ultimately, it is up to each THE LOCAL ANSWER
individual to reach their own conclusion unless the product gets withdrawn from sale.
Sort S or t o out ut y your our p pots ots June is a good time of year to sort out the long-term pots in your garden. Re-pot into slightly larger ones – don’t put plants directly into huge pots from small ones, as they don’t tend to do as well. Also, don’t use pots that curve inwards at the top for these long-term plantings, as they are next to impossible to remove the rootball without breaking the pot. The very big pots are impractical to empty and re-do so with these you can scrape off 10cm or so of soil and top up with fresh soil – something like John Innes No.3. Use slow release plant food pellets to make sure the plant is being fed. Refer to the packet for quantity and instructions.
The T he ‘‘Chelsea Chelsea cchop’ hop’ As we’ve just had the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, it is the ideal time to do the ‘Chelsea TO ADVERTISE CALL
chop’. This is a way of shortening perennials that can become leggy. It promotes smaller, later but a higher quantity of flowers. All you need to do is chop back the plants by up to half using secateurs. According to the RHS, removing the top shoots allows sideshoots to branch out. Usually, top shoots would inhibit this by producing hormones in a process known as apical dominance. You can read more about this at www.rhs.org.uk You can try the Chelsea chop on lots of plants including Sedums, Asters, Rudbeckias, Echinaceas and Heleniums. You could also cut back half the stems and leave the other half, thus lengthening the flowering display – have a try and see how you get on. It is also a good idea to thin out some of the stems of plants such as delphiniums or phlox at this time of year. Take out about a quarter of the weakest ones at the base, as this will ensure the remaining stems will be stronger. PAGE

Spice S pice u up p yyour our summer summer space space This year we were blessed with sunny Easter weather and you can be sure that over the summer months, come rain or shine, there will be more opportunities to enjoy being outdoors. It’s just as much fun to decorate your outside space as your indoor space – and it really doesn’t have to cost much to refresh your look. Here are some ideas and inspiration to get you started.
Create C reate a an no outdoor utdoor rroom oom Make your garden into a summer haven. Step one – get out your paintbrush. Painting your garden fence a more upto-date colour can make a real difference. A chic dark grey can work well and is smart and stylish. Upcycle your garden furniture by painting it in a fresh contemporary hue – try on-trend shades of coral or mustard for a pop of colour. Don’t forget to spruce up your patio either. You can hire a patio cleaner for a small cost and you’ll be amazed by how much brighter it looks.
sheltered space for relaxing and are an attractive focal point for your garden. A friend built a summer house in the corner of her Cheltenham town garden, transforming her outside space and she uses it all year round! Give your garden furniture a summer spruce up or invest in something new. Rattan and cane are very much on-trend, or if you are looking for a contemporary vibe go for metal or corded seating in bright colours (Ikea has some great cheap options).

Invest in some new cushions to add some sizzle. Look for bright botanical prints in weather resistant fabrics, paired with big green plants in metal planters for an Aussie tropical vibe. Alternatively, go for stripes in soft shades of blue or sand for a beachier look. Finish off with floor cushions in a contemporary geometric print or an outdoor rug (big

this season) made from an ecofriendly material such as recycled plastic bottles.
Dining D ining a alfresco lfresco Nothing says lazy summer days better than alfresco dining. Even if you only have a small backyard or balcony you can invest in a bistro dining set – perfect for early evening drinks or an outdoor brunch. Mix and match your chairs and tables to create a vintage look. You don’t even have to rely on paper plates and plastic cups that are bad for the environment any more. The newest outdoor dining ranges look so good you could use them indoors and no-one would know the difference.
Finishing F inishing touches touches The right lighting creates that all important magical touch. I love lots of tea lights for creating atmosphere – why not use eco-friendly LED lights to highlight a particularly striking aspect of your garden, or festoon twinkly string lights around your patio. All you need to do now is light the barbecue, sit back and look forward to summer! PAGE

Recycling Recycling in in the the garden garden – novel planting novel ideas ideas for for p lanting As soon as Spring started here, as we do every year, we began planting seeds. We tend to plant vegetables, herbs and salad, which really helps us to cut down on the plastic packaging we are usually inundated with from the supermarket. Currently we have lettuce, chives and tomatoes starting, with cucumber and rocket waiting to go in, as the cold snap was a little harsh. Recently, instead of buying new plastic pots, we have been looking at ways we can re-use the things we already have to plant in.
Lots L ots of of plastic plastic ttubs ubs have d have drainage rainage h holes oles Lots of the plastic tubs that food comes in – grapes and tomatoes for example – are perfect, as they already have holes in them for draining. Any plastic containers that don’t are easily converted by using a skewer to carefully poke some holes in the bottom. This is

one for the adults to do if you are planting with kids! You can also cut one panel out of plastic milk bottles and lie them on their sides. Egg boxes are brilliant as you can have individual seedlings in each section and they can be planted directly into the soil – just make sure you are using the paper variety. Another idea is to use the inner core of toilet rolls. Stack them tightly in a tray, fill with compost and plant individual seeds in them. When they are ready to be transferred you can plant them straight into the soil.
Plant P lant into into egg egg shells shells If you have egg boxes, chances are that you also have egg shells. You can plant into these too, just make a small drainage hole in the bottom. A particularly fun one for children is to let them draw a face on the shell in non-toxic pens and then plant cress in them for hair. Once done with, you can crush the shell up to add to the soil for extra drainage. You can easily turn newspaper pages into pots, either using a stapler, or if you want to plant them out, you can secure them using a little flour and water paste glue. TO ADVERTISE CALL
Coffee C offee grounds grounds a act ct as as a brilliant brilliant fertiliser fertiliser For coffee lovers with machines that produce grounds, another brilliant idea is mixing the grounds into the compost, as they are full of nitrates and act as a brilliant fertiliser. And finally, what about all these bags that compost comes in? Well, if you open them carefully and then poke some holes in the bottom when they are empty, you can use them to grow potatoes.
Re-use R e-use tthen hen recycle recycle So not only are you not adding to your waste by not buying new plastic pots or your fruit and vegetables in containers, you are re-using any that you do have, and once they are done with, you can either put them away for next year or recycle them as usual. Money M oney Matters Matters Regularly we talk about ‘going paperless’ as we strive for operating efficiencies and environmental improvements. Rarely does the subject of ‘going cashless’ get the same amount of air time, but it’s happening at a similar pace. Cash has been the way we paid for things for 2,000 years, but quietly its position as the ‘currency of choice’ has been eroded. During 2019 it is almost certain that debit cards will overtake cash as the most-frequently used way to pay our bills. Ask my kids.
Contactless C ontactless payment payment systems systems have have iincreased ncreased the the pace pace of of change change I used to think that the fact they never had any cash on them was simply a way to get Dad to foot the bill, but in fact it was clear evidence of changing times – they had no need for cash as they could simply ‘flash’ their card. Contactless payment systems have increased the pace of change. If someone has too much cash, we’re now supposed to be suspicious of them because they may be ‘laundering’ money, rather than envious of the obvious sign of their success. I was pleasantly surprised last month when a local jeweller took ‘used notes’ from me that I’d won at the races. Should we really be concerned what High Street retailers think of us if we pay by cash?
Non-cash N on-cash a alternatives lternatives a are re hardly h ardly rrisk-free isk-free There is, of course, the suggestion that plastic is safer than cash; not an environmental argument, of course, but one of physical security. But you only have to read stories about online and card fraud to know that non-cash alternatives are hardly risk-free. The banks are encouraging the move away from cash with the development of their online services and Apps for handheld devices, as well as their ongoing closure of branches, which shows no sign of abatement, and the withdrawal of ATM machines. Will we ever become completely cashless? The Treasury doesn’t think so, as it has spent the last couple of years converting old notes to more durable versions. There are still issues with technology, such as broadband speeds in rural areas, that might hinder it becoming extinct. I hope it doesn’t disappear completely.
