Tiger's E ye H ot Rock Rock G rill and and Tiger's Eye Hot Grill Cocktail Cocktail Bar Bar iin n G Gloucester loucester iiss something of of a hidden hidden gem. g em. something Situated over two floors above Costa Coffee on Southgate Street in the 17th century Old Bell Inn, the restaurant specialises in hot stone cooking, and is famous for their Asian influenced menu and sublime cocktails. W i t h t h e op t i o n t o e a t e i t h e r i n t h e atmospheric surroundings of the pub, or in the sleek, modern dining area just across the hall, The Local Answer was lucky enough to be invited along to enjoy a delicious meal. We were shown to our table by a friendly waitress, who was attentive and on hand throughout the evening. Looking at the menu, to say we were spoilt for choice would be an understatement. To start we went for three dishes from the Izakaya Ta Tapas menu the Popcorn Shrimp, Belly Cubes and and Coriander Gy Dumplings. The Popco Shrimp was crisp a fried to perfection accompanied with squeeze of lemon w complimented it wit burst of freshness. The Gyoza Dum you had a choice of pork and prawn or beef and coriander, were amazing. They were clearly freshly made, and when dipped in the accompanying sauces brought a real taste of Asia to the table. However, both my friend and I agreed that the star of starters was the Cola Pork Belly Cubes. Sweet and sticky, the cubes melt in your
mouth and were unlike any pork dish I’ve ever tasted. For our mains, I went for one of the chef’s specials – the Five-Spice Duck Breast. My friend ensured we had the full Tiger's Eye experience, d for the Hot rill, going for of the more tic meats on er in Zebra d L l a ma . The Hot Rock a l l o w s yo u t o e from a f different cuts Angus sirloin and Lamb, as well as seafood, vegetables, Halloumi, and exotic meats. My friend was presented with a super-heated (+450°C) lava rock, a pair of tongs and his selection of freshly prepared cuts of meat. W i t h n o o i l n e e d e d , h e w a s a bl e t o cook his food on the rock with just a dash of salt. The freshly cooked meat was
absolutely delicious straight off the rock, with just a dash of salt the flavours were sealed in immediately. My duck was presented alongside a serving of Kimchi and wasabi mash and was drenched in a delicious plum sauce. The duck was amazingly juicy, with a crispy skin covered in Asian spices, and the wasabi mash, which I expected to be spicy, was surprisingly refreshing. We were tempted by the desserts – there is no set dessert menu but instead a special menu decided by the chef on the day. I went for the lemon posset, which accompanied with blackcurrant sauce was the perfect mix of sweet and sharpness. Situated on the second floor is a bar for private hire, a pool room with big screen and table football, along with an outside smoking terrace. With a huge selection of dishes, drinks and the unique Hot Rock Grill, Tiger ’s Eye is truly a restaurant experience like no other.

The The River River Severn Severn aand nd iits ts w wildlife ildlife Since the dawn of time, rivers have been essential for human and animal survival. They have produced not only water for drinking and farming, but also a route of transport for trade and businesses to access towns and cities. Running straight through the heart of Gloucestershire is Great Britain’s longest river, the River Severn at 220 miles long. The famous Severn bore pushes its way up the river on various dates throughout the year, which many spectators gather together to see. Our rivers here in the UK are home to a vast variety of species, each playing its own part in the circle of life and its ecosystem. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of pollution finding its way into our river systems, which undoubtedly causes harm to several animals that reside there. What could you spot down by the river?
Fish F ish Many different fish live in the rivers such as carp, roach, minnow, eels and brown trout.
Mammals M ammals Some furry friends that can be found are otters, dormice, badgers, polecats, water voles, stoats and mink.
IInsects nsects & amphibians amphibians Will you be quick enough to spot butterflies, newts, frogs, damselflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, frogs or toads?
Flowers F lowers Foxgloves, kingcups, yellow iris, bluebells and waterlilies will make for beautiful photographs.
Birds B irds Birdwatchers will love looking out for mallard ducks, swans, Canada geese, kingfishers, grey herons and osprey.

The T he majestic majestic willow willow Weeping willow trees are often found down by the riverside as they prefer an environment with heavy soil and near standing water. Willows can be an e x c e l l e n t s a n ct u a r y f o r r e st i n g birds and other wildlife, with their long swaying branches offering shade in hot summers. The riverside is a charming place to spend a summer’s day with a picnic and spotting wildlife. You can also take a boat trip to visit local villages by water as a new experience for all the family. While you are down by the water’s edge, if it is safe to do so, then you can do your bit for wildlife and the environment by clearing away any rubbish that may cause further harm to our natural world. Smile S mile ssmart mart We all want that perfect white smile, yet nearly a third of parents in the UK wait until their children have all their milk teeth before taking them to the dentist for the first time. Shocking statistics about children as young as three needing to have teeth removed due to decay have brought children’s dental health to the public’s attention. It is recommended that a child should be taken to the dentist when their first tooth has cut through or when they are one (whichever comes first). This is because baby (milk) teeth are essential for speech, the structure of the face and holding space for the adult teeth to erupt into. If there is decay it can lead to infection, discomfort and could potentially damage the permanent teeth below. Children who have toothache or who need treatment may have pain, infections and difficulties with eating, sleeping and socialising. They may have to be absent from school and parents may also have to take time off work to take their

Poor, high sugar-based diets in children from weaning age can be a contributing factor to tooth decay at such a young age, along with inappropriate brushing and care. Therefore, encouraging healthy eating habits is also vital. Another big problem is that over half of UK parents stop helping their children brush their teeth too early and do not monitor their brushing habits. Newly-revitalised Newly-revitalised Northern Ireland Ireland Northern I lived in ‘Norn Iron’ during the 1960s and 1970s. They weren’t happy times, with the Troubles overlaid on the stunningly beautiful province that, almost overnight, went from being among the world’s safest places to, well, you know the rest... Where the Troubles once played out, there is new vitality and open-top bus tours to sights as diverse as Belfast’s copper-domed City Hall and the iconic murals depicting Ulster’s oh-so-complicated history on each side of the city’s peace line. Gloucester G loucester Wotton Wotton are are a club club full full of of aces aces Gloucester Wotton Lawn Tennis Club is one of the oldest tennis clubs in the country. Formed in 1881, it’s still going strong today, boasting some 60 to 70 members and competing as it does at a very decent level. Ladies’ captain Dale Williams has been a big part of the club since the late 1980s. “I must have been with the club for nigh on 30 years,” she sa id . “ I’ m i n m y s ec on d s pe l l Gloucester Wotton Lawn Tennis Club ladies’ A as ladies’ captain.” team, from left, Karlee Jarvis, Patricia Burdett, And she’s not just been Bernadette Padfield and Dale Williams captain for the odd year or so I t’s a remarkable achievement – either because her first spell lasted for some 10 or 11 years Dale says it is “astonishing” – and she’s been captain for a because she is in her early 60s similar period this time around. and she’s not the youngest in And she’s been successful too their regular four-strong team! “Bernadette Padfield is the because the ladies’ A team were promoted to the Premier Division same age and Patricia Burdett is of the Gloucestershire Summer a bit older,” said Dale. “My League at the end of last season, partner Karlee Jarvis is younger, their second promotion in three she’s the baby of the team!” years. Bernadette’s husband David is
the club’s chairman and Patricia is the club’s welfare officer, key roles that need to be filled if players are to be allowed to enjoy the game they’ve played for so long. And Dale and Karlee certainly enjoy playing with each other. Teams are made up of two doubles pairings and Dale said: “It’s great fun and it’s a great way of getting exercise without having to run too far because a court is fairly small. “It’s so sociable, we’re laughing even when we’re playing competitively.” So what are Dale’s strengths as a tennis player? “I’m not as quick as I used to be but I like to think I’m okay,” she said, “I must be doing something right! “I like playing at the net but like to think I’m okay at the back of the court too.” Full story online.

way to go before they can start looking ahead to the summer holidays and trips abroad. Olivia Rook is one of those youngsters, although she won’t be one of those out partying when her GCSEs are over. You see, 15-year-old Olivia, who is a pupil at Denmark Road High School in Gloucester, also happens to be a good tennis player. So much so th a t a s s o o n h er exams are finished, she will be out and about playing the sport she loves as she chases her dream of becoming a Olivia Rook full-time player.
Gloucestershire batsman Ian Cockbain may be deep into his well-deserved testimonial year but he remains fiercely ambitious. For a start he’d like to play more four-day cricket, he’d also like to reach T20 finals day after three times being a losing quarter-finalist, and he’d also like to have another go at captaining the county after enjoying a brief spell in charge in 2015. Cockbain, who was born in Liverpool, joined Gloucestershire in 2011 and the 32-year-old middle-order batsman has played well over 200 games for his adopted county and has scored centuries in all three formats of the game.

The club will be enjoying their 50th anniversary and it promises to be a great year for the 150 or so members who, quite literally, run for fun. Except that there’s a little bit more to orienteering than just running because competitors are armed with a map and a compass and have to navigate their way round a course, which involves checking in at control points along the way.

Sandra S andra E Ennis nnis is is an an u unsung nsung h hero ero Every sport needs a Sandra Ennis. Fortunately for those who like to run and jump, athletics is her big passion and she’s been a major player on the admin side at club and county level for more than three decades now. Sandra, who will be 76 in September, is chairman of the Gloucestershire Amateur Athletics Association and is one of those unsung heroes who does so much work behind the scenes, which allows others to prosper in their chosen activity. And as is often the case, Sandra only got involved in the sport through her children. Actually, it was through her oldest son Philip, who had shown he’d got some athletics talent in his days as a pupil at Calton Road Junior School in Gloucester. “He was always good at sports day,” recalled his proud mum, “and one of his teachers, Terry Haines, said he should join Gloucester Athletic Club and it all went from there.” Haines was chairman of Gloucester AC at the time so he knew what he was doing. “The only thing he wasn’t good at was the pole vault,” continued Sandra. “His main event was the high hurdles but he also did the long jump and triple jump.” Philip was 11 when he joined Gloucester AC – he’s 43 now and plays golf – and at that stage was training two nights a week at the club. Pretty soon he was competing in the Young Athletes League and that’s when Sandra’s role went from being supportive mum to full-on supporter of Gloucester AC. “I got roped in as team manager,” she laughed. “Myself and timekeeper Arthur Birt – he’s 94 now – used to take up to 50 kids on a coach to compete. “We’d have under-13, under-15 and under-17 age groups and we’d go weekend after weekend after weekend, we’d go all over the country.”
There are top races all over Gloucestershire throughout the year.
Philip was one of the better athletes – “He competed at Birmingham and got his medals,” said Sandra – before he left Sandra Ennis Gloucester at the age of 16 to join the marines. Sandra was hooked by then, of course, and the more opportunities she got to be involved the better as far as she was concerned. “I became a qualified track judge and timekeeper,” she said with justifiable pride. “I was also team manager of the senior team and I was club secretary from 1988 until 2013.” When she gave up the job of Gloucester AC secretary she’d already been chairman of Gloucestershire AAA for a couple of years. “I tried to juggle the two jobs,” said Sandra, “but it was too difficult. I’d originally been put forward to be chairman of Gloucestershire because I was Gloucester AC’s rep at county level.” Philip, meanwhile, suffered a bad knee injury while in the marines which meant he returned to Gloucester. “I remember persuading him to come and watch one of our matches,” said Sandra. “I told him to bring a vest – he came to watch and he ended up doing six events!”
Eventually he got into football – he played in goal for Hardwicke before managing them – but Sandra, who lives in Gloucester, remained very much involved in athletics. “The people you are with, they are like an extended family,” she said. “My life would have been a lot different but for athletics. I’ve never regretted it, I’ve got so many friends and the family extends well beyond Gloucester.” What makes her love of the sport all the more remarkable is that it’s not something she has competed in herself for close on 60 years. “I used to run when I was at East Dean Grammar School in Cinderford,” she said. “I used to play netball, hockey and tennis as well but I’ve not done any athletics since I left school. “It doesn’t bother me that I wasn’t an athlete.” Fortunately she found a way to become involved in a sport that is certainly flourishing in this county and beyond. You only have to see the number of events and the number of races that are organised around Gloucestershire to realise how popular the sport is. “Yes, it is very popular,” said Sandra, “We’ve got 17 affiliated clubs to the Gloucestershire AAA. People just love to run.” And thanks to people like Sandra Ennis, they can!

The T he Fleece Fleece Hotel Hotel Many of us have fond memories of times we spent in Gloucester’s Fleece Hotel. But a whole generation now probably have no memory of it at all. It traded as an inn for almost 500 years until 2002 when the bill for electrical repairs became too much for its then owners. It was purchased by the South West Regional Development Agency (part of the Government) who held it for a decade and shamefully did nothing with it, aside from letting it rot. By the time it passed to the City Council when the agency was disbanded, it had every problem imaginable – wet rot, dry rot, cracked timbers, water ingress and more besides.
The T he ccouncil ouncil spent spent over over £300,000 £300,000 on o n sstabilisation tabilisation works works The Council immediately spent over £300,000 on stabilisation works to secure the buildings and has carried out further site investigations including archaeology so any developer taking it on knows exactly what they are getting into. Up until this point it has been difficult to find a solution for the site – which is far bigger than you would first think. The narrow entrance from Westgate Street and the black and white timbered façade are the parts that you see, but the site runs back to Cross Keys Lane and across to Bull Lane – a huge area in total. It is made up of a collection of buildings of different ages, the most important of which is the former Monks Retreat with its 12th century vaulted ceiling – reputed to be one of the finest in Europe. A fire in the Edwardian block in 2017 added to the challenges the site faces.

The Council is part way through a procurement exercise to find a developer partner and I am optimistic about The Fleece’s future. There are a number of interested parties, all of whom are known to us, and they have presented their ideas for the site. We will make a decision later this year. The heritage element of the Government’s Future High Street Fund may help to fund the scheme, but it is likely to need ongoing council support. I’m very keen to see this site brought back into use and believe it could make a big difference to Westgate Street and the city centre as a whole. @ @cllrpauljames cllrpauljames

Wearable Wearable Art Art exhibit exhibit at at the the Cathedral Cathedral Gloucester Cathedral will play host to an art exhibition like no other this month. A ‘Wearable Art’ competition will see creatives from all around the country taking to a catwalk to display their creations. “Wearable Art is any art that can be worn on the body,” explained Julia Davies, one of the Art Couture Painswick team, who have been running the competition for over a decade. “We encourage people to design and make their costumes from all age groups – from children up to professional makers and designers. They design into a theme, and the themes this year are Robotics and Biomimicry. We also have a bodypainting category.” After ten years of holding the Wearable Art in the village of Painswick, this year will see the

FFilm ilm Review Review – Joe Joe K Kennett ennett Avengers: A vengers: Endgame Endgame
Quickly becoming the highestgrossing movie of all time, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is a celebration and culmination of the past decade of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Directed by the awardwinning Russo brothers Joe and Anthony, ‘Endgame’ is a send-off for the past 21 films in the Infinity Saga. With a lengthy three-hour run time, this film is a fast-paced action, and if anything, I’m sure fans will agree that it could almost have gone on for longer. There’s a perfect blend of comedy, drama and heartfelt moments throughout the course of the film, all culminating in a whopper of an ending. It’s a cathartic experience as we see characters from all corners of the MCU come together in their final effort to defeat Thanos. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the perfect ending to what has been a truly remarkable era of cinema. and competition to a new audience this year. “The Cathedral often have world class art exhibitions, so we are pleased to be in this list. “We always attract a wide range of entrants – we encourage as many local people to get involved in entering or coming along to watch and support. “We do however attract a high standard of makers from all over the country, and the competition has a reputation for hosting amazing body painters.” The competition will be judged by a team of experts, including tailor Emma Willis, MBE, world famous Makeup Artist Alex Box and Susannah Buxton, Emmy Award Winning Costume Designer. The Wearable Art showcase will be at Gloucester Cathedral on Friday 14th June. Full story online.
Book B ook Review Review – Aloÿse Aloÿse of of Daylesford Daylesford Book Book Club Club The T he Only Only Story Story
by Julian Barnes “Would you rather love the more, and suffer the more; or love the less, and suffer the less?” So starts Julian Barnes’ latest novel ‘The Only Story’. The story is one of a love affair between a nineteen year old boy and a forty eight year old woman which starts in the long university summer vacation, defying the social conventions of the Surrey village in which they both live. Barnes writes in the first person, giving a very vivid account of the relationship, which many believe to be autobiographical. Paul never gives up on Susan but the demands on his side of the relationship take their toll and become overwhelming. There is humour and dry wit but Barnes – writing with such great intensity – produces a heart wrenching and thought provoking read. Full review online.

Hardwicke Hardwicke Players’ Players’ twist twist o on n cclassic lassic sstory tor y In 2004, five friends got together and formed their own theatre company. Fifteen years down the line, The Hardwicke Players have raised thousands of pounds for various charities across the county with their annual productions. Founding member and director Claire Chapman said: “We performed for the first time at Quedgeley Village Hall in January 2006 when we staged an original pantomime called ‘The Merchants of Gloucester’. “Since then we have gone on to perform two shows most years and are now based at the Kings Theatre in Gloucester.” The Players now have a cast and crew of around 15, and Claire says the friendly atmosphere of the group shows in their performances. “We have a range of members

raise money for charities in and around Gloucester. Claire continued: “Over the years, we’ve donated to many local charities including the Alzheimer’s Society, the Gloucestershire Lymphoedma charity and Sue Ryder. “For the second year running, we are supporting the Cheltenham and Gloucester hospitals charity. Our next production is an adaptation of the Jules Vernes classic ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. “Our version tells the story of Phileas Fogg’s great-great-greatgreat-granddaughter who finds his journal and decides to recreate her ancestor’s journey around the globe.” ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ is at The Kings Theatre in Gloucester on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th June. G Gloucester loucester Vinyl Vinyl F Fest est rreturns eturns to to C Café afé R René ené A celebration of all things vinyl will be coming to Gloucester this month as Café René host their third annual Gloucester Vinyl Fest. The festival is being organised by the Café with the Stroud and Gloucester Vinyl Connection (SGVC), a local group founded by Darren Norris and Neil Wilson. “Me and Neil set up the Stroud and Gloucester Vinyl Connection seven years ago, just for the fun of it,” said Darren. “It developed into a proper social club and we now do regular events, one month in Gloucester and the next month in Stroud.” The SGVC events revolve

around a set of decks, and an open invitation for anyone to bring along their records and play whatever music they like. Darren continued: “We have open decks, you’ve just got to put your name on the board and anyone can have a chance to play their music.
“We have all sorts of genres playing, whether you’ve got a bag of rock ‘n’ roll or a bag of house, it’s fine by us. It’s a really good vibe.” The SGVC will be running their open decks at the Vinyl Festival on the outdoor stage, as well as organising swap and trade shops for record collectors to come and add to their collection. There will also be an outdoor bar and barbeque, followed by DJ sets throughout the night in the Cellar Bar. “You get a warmth and a real feel to vinyl as opposed to other forms of music,” added Darren. Be Be wary war y of of weed weed killers killers The safety of glyphosate weed killers is being called into question by some scientific studies as being carcinogenic and harmful to bees. I am not usually swayed easily into ‘scare stories’ but I have noticed the reduction in the flying insect population, and when that is confirmed by other studies and then linked to glyphosate it doesn’t seem a risk worth taking.
How d How do oy you ou ttackle ackle pernicious p ernicious w weeds? eeds? However, if weed killers are not used, it leaves one with a problem of how to tackle bindweed and other pernicious weeds. Basically, you’re left with the option of either digging out weeds, or covering the ground with old carpet or some such thing which can be left undisturbed for a year or more. This is only useful if all the other plants are removed first. It could be argued that if all the safety instructions on the product are followed it is fine. Ultimately, it is up to each THE LOCAL ANSWER
individual to reach their own conclusion unless the product gets withdrawn from sale.
Sort S or t o out ut y your our p pots ots June is a good time of year to sort out the long-term pots in your garden. Re-pot into slightly larger ones – don’t put plants directly into huge pots from small ones, as they don’t tend to do as well. Also, don’t use pots that curve inwards at the top for these long-term plantings, as they are next to impossible to remove the rootball without breaking the pot. The very big pots are impractical to empty and re-do so with these you can scrape off 10cm or so of soil and top up with fresh soil – something like John Innes No.3. Use slow release plant food pellets to make sure the plant is being fed. Refer to the packet for quantity and instructions.
The T he ‘‘Chelsea Chelsea cchop’ hop’ As we’ve just had the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, it is the ideal time to do the ‘Chelsea TO ADVERTISE CALL
chop’. This is a way of shortening perennials that can become leggy. It promotes smaller, later but a higher quantity of flowers. All you need to do is chop back the plants by up to half using secateurs. According to the RHS, removing the top shoots allows sideshoots to branch out. Usually, top shoots would inhibit this by producing hormones in a process known as apical dominance. You can read more about this at www.rhs.org.uk You can try the Chelsea chop on lots of plants including Sedums, Asters, Rudbeckias, Echinaceas and Heleniums. You could also cut back half the stems and leave the other half, thus lengthening the flowering display – have a try and see how you get on. It is also a good idea to thin out some of the stems of plants such as delphiniums or phlox at this time of year. Take out about a quarter of the weakest ones at the base, as this will ensure the remaining stems will be stronger. PAGE

Spice S pice u up p yyour our summer summer space space This year we were blessed with sunny Easter weather and you can be sure that over the summer months, come rain or shine, there will be more opportunities to enjoy being outdoors. It’s just as much fun to decorate your outside space as your indoor space – and it really doesn’t have to cost much to refresh your look. Here are some ideas and inspiration to get you started.
Create C reate a an no outdoor utdoor rroom oom Make your garden into a summer haven. Step one – get out your paintbrush. Painting your garden fence a more upto-date colour can make a real difference. A chic dark grey can work well and is smart and stylish. Upcycle your garden furniture by painting it in a fresh contemporary hue – try on-trend shades of coral or mustard for a pop of colour. Don’t forget to spruce up your patio either. You can hire a patio cleaner for a small cost and you’ll be amazed by how much brighter it looks.
sheltered space for relaxing and are an attractive focal point for your garden. A friend built a summer house in the corner of her Cheltenham town garden, transforming her outside space and she uses it all year round! Give your garden furniture a summer spruce up or invest in something new. Rattan and cane are very much on-trend, or if you are looking for a contemporary vibe go for metal or corded seating in bright colours (Ikea has some great cheap options).

Invest in some new cushions to add some sizzle. Look for bright botanical prints in weather resistant fabrics, paired with big green plants in metal planters for an Aussie tropical vibe. Alternatively, go for stripes in soft shades of blue or sand for a beachier look. Finish off with floor cushions in a contemporary geometric print or an outdoor rug (big

Dining D ining a alfresco lfresco Nothing says lazy summer days better than alfresco dining. Even if you only have a small backyard or balcony you can invest in a bistro dining set – perfect for early evening drinks or an outdoor brunch. Mix and match your chairs and tables to create a vintage look. You don’t even have to rely on paper plates and plastic cups that are bad for the environment any more. The newest outdoor dining ranges look so good you could use them indoors and no-one would know the difference.
Finishing F inishing touches touches The right lighting creates that all important magical touch. I love lots of tea lights for creating atmosphere – why not use eco-friendly LED lights to highlight a particularly striking aspect of your garden, or festoon twinkly string lights around your patio. All you need to do now is light the barbecue, sit back and look forward to summer! PAGE

Recycling Recycling in in the the garden garden – novel planting novel ideas ideas for for p lanting As soon as Spring started here, as we do every year, we began planting seeds. We tend to plant vegetables, herbs and salad, which really helps us to cut down on the plastic packaging we are usually inundated with from the supermarket. Currently we have lettuce, chives and tomatoes starting, with cucumber and rocket waiting to go in, as the cold snap was a little harsh. Recently, instead of buying new plastic pots, we have been looking at ways we can re-use the things we already have to plant in.
Lots L ots of of plastic plastic ttubs ubs have d have drainage rainage h holes oles Lots of the plastic tubs that food comes in – grapes and tomatoes for example – are perfect, as they already have holes in them for draining. Any plastic containers that don’t are easily converted by using a skewer to carefully poke some holes in the bottom. This is

one for the adults to do if you are planting with kids! You can also cut one panel out of plastic milk bottles and lie them on their sides. Egg boxes are brilliant as you can have individual seedlings in each section and they can be planted directly into the soil – just make sure you are using the paper variety. Another idea is to use the inner core of toilet rolls. Stack them tightly in a tray, fill with compost and plant individual seeds in them. When they are ready to be transferred you can plant them straight into the soil.
Plant P lant into into egg egg shells shells If you have egg boxes, chances are that you also have egg shells. You can plant into these too, just make a small drainage hole in the bottom. A particularly fun one for children is to let them draw a face on the shell in non-toxic pens and then plant cress in them for hair. Once done with, you can crush the shell up to add to the soil for extra drainage. You can easily turn newspaper pages into pots, either using a stapler, or if you want to plant them out, you can secure them using a little flour and water paste glue. TO ADVERTISE CALL
Coffee C offee grounds grounds a act ct as as a brilliant brilliant fertiliser fertiliser For coffee lovers with machines that produce grounds, another brilliant idea is mixing the grounds into the compost, as they are full of nitrates and act as a brilliant fertiliser. And finally, what about all these bags that compost comes in? Well, if you open them carefully and then poke some holes in the bottom when they are empty, you can use them to grow potatoes.
Re-use R e-use tthen hen recycle recycle So not only are you not adding to your waste by not buying new plastic pots or your fruit and vegetables in containers, you are re-using any that you do have, and once they are done with, you can either put them away for next year or recycle them as usual. A ccashless ashless ssociety ociety Regularly we talk about ‘going paperless’ as we strive for operating efficiencies and environmental improvements. Rarely does the subject of ‘going cashless’ get the same amount of air time, but it’s happening at a similar pace. Cash has been the way we paid for things for 2,000 years, but quietly its position as the ‘currency of choice’ has been eroded. During 2019 it is almost certain that debit cards will overtake cash as the most-frequently used way to pay our bills. Ask my kids.
Contactless C ontactless payment payment systems systems have have iincreased ncreased the the pace pace of of change change I used to think that the fact they never had any cash on them was simply a way to get Dad to foot the bill, but in fact it was clear evidence of changing times – they had no need for cash as they could simply ‘flash’ their card. Contactless payment systems have increased the pace of change. If someone has too much cash, we’re now supposed to be suspicious of them because they may be ‘laundering’ money, rather than envious of the obvious sign of their success. I was pleasantly surprised last month when a local jeweller took ‘used notes’ from me that I’d won at the races. Should we really be concerned what High Street retailers think of us if we pay by cash?

There is, of course, the suggestion that plastic is safer than cash; not an environmental argument, of course, but one of physical security. But you only have to read stories about online and card fraud to know that non-cash alternatives are hardly risk-free. The banks are encouraging the move away from cash with the development of their online services and Apps for handheld devices, as well as their ongoing closure of branches, which shows no sign of abatement, and the withdrawal of ATM machines. Will we ever become completely cashless? The Treasury doesn’t think so, as it has spent the last couple of years converting old notes to more durable versions. There are still issues with technology, such as broadband speeds in rural areas, that might hinder it becoming extinct. I hope it doesn’t disappear completely.
